A description of the vital role in the Civil War played by Mobile, AL, a Gulf Coast city that was the back door into the Confederacy. Mobile was a major port, railroad center, & Confederate stronghold, & its defense was of utmost importance to the Confederate gov t. The author examines the many aspects of the war in Confederate Mobile from secession in 1861 until the surrender in 1865. In explaining how Southern forces attempted to defend the city, he discusses the roles of commanding generals, the creation of a Confederate navy, blockade running, the erection of fortifications, & military campaigns. Extensive bibliography.
In all honesty the book probably rates a four, rather than a five. However I was born on the Alabama Gulf Coast and the history around The Port City runs in my blood. You will find a fascinating look at the city from both a military and civilian viewpoint throughout the war, rather than just a concentration on the epic naval battle.
The book itself is very good, showing the importance of the city to the Confederacy and covering the military operations and engagements very well. However, the maps could have been far better; every one was a reprint from the Official Records atlas and grouped together towards the center of the book.
