An Embarrassment of Pandas is a poetry collection inspired by strange animal names. Sheep come in flocks, of course, but did you know that crows come in murders? That herons come in hedges? And who could pass up an opportunity to see a business of ferrets? These poems are designed to entertain readers of all ages.
Am I biased because my wife wrote this book? Yes. Was it still a fantastic read? Definitely.
I actually hadn't read all of Rachel's animal poems before she had ordered a proof copy, so when we got ours, I had the opportunity to put a completely fresh pair of eyes on the book. I read it all in one sitting, and I plan to re-read the book. The poems are well-written and light-hearted. I found myself smiling, chuckling, and laughing out loud a few times. Holly Black's illustrations also do a marvelous job of adding to the overall presentation. Obviously done by someone who loves to look at animals, you'll find them very impressive.
The poems are great and the illustrations are perfect. The first poem is everything you hope for, short, fun and whimsical. In an age where poetry is forgotten and even sustained this book reminds us that is can be fun.
This book of poems and verse based on collective nouns for animals is by turns clever, funny, sad, and insightful about words and imagery. More for adults and teens who like wordplay than for children, although they could enjoy it with some explanation and it could be a fun introduction to poetry. I like the way the author's mind works! And the illustrations are great.
I won a free copy of this book from a Goodreads giveaway. This little gem is absolutely charming. It was very interesting, informative and also quite humorous. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a short pleasant cheerful read. I loved it!
