Katie Calumet was finishing up her morning run when she heard a baby crying coming from inside of a parked van. Katie isn't sure what is going on but knows she can't just walk away from a baby if it's been left all alone so she sends a quick test to her husband to let him know what is going on then proceeds to check inside the van. But as Katie climbs inside the van she finds things are not quite right but before she knows it she is attacked and kidnapped.

Detective Justin Cross gets the call that a woman is possibly the victim of a kidnapping and heads out to the scene. Katie's husband explains the message he received from his wife and a toy is found on the side of the road but no sign of Katie. Justin immediately begins the search to find out just who took Katie and why as Katie herself is fighting for her life to survive.

Gone Missing by T.J. Brearton is a completely gripping thriller that has the unique twist of not only following the police as they investigate the case but also the victim as she goes through the ordeal. With alternating points of view readers are kept up to date on both sides of the story as it unfolds keeping the pages turning to see just what would happen.

Katie was a great main character for this story, she was just the perfect mix of strong willed and a fighter but also realistic in the fact that not every choice she makes while on her frantic grasp at survival was always the best move. Meanwhile the police found themselves digging in deep and finding quite the elaborate scheme behind the missing woman as they rush to save her life. Definitely a great, engaging read that I'd recommend checking out.

This book pulled me in from the beginning. The storyline is gripping, pacy, tense, action packed with plenty of twists. I liked everything about this book, the cover, the characters, (even the baddies) and the authors style of writing. I will be adding this author to my favourites list.

It was a normal day. Then they took her.

Katie Calumet is on her usual morning run when she hears a baby crying. Fearing a child may be in danger, she stops to investigate – but to her horror the cries are a trap, and a sudden strike to the head knocks her unconscious. When Katie wakes up, blindfolded and with her hands and feet bound, she has no idea where she is…

Investigator Justin Cross takes on the case, but with the trail leading into six million acres of dense forest, and a failing marriage weighing on his mind, finding Katie is his most challenging case yet – not least because the Calumet family are keeping secrets of their own.

Justin and Katie face a race against time that will push them both to their very limits. As Justin works day and night to discover who took her and why, Katie fights desperately to escape from her kidnappers and the forest that surrounds her…

Can they find her before it’s too late?

-------------------------------------------------------------------

This is an excellent and suspense filled thriller that I thoroughly enjoyed. The point of view alternates between the police and the victim which gives us two sides to the story. The character development is great too - Katie is shown to be a determined and strong-willed lead character. Investigator Justin Cross is focused and resourceful but is dealing with lots of personal issues that he doesn't have the time to resolve. Other characters that are mentioned are done so fleetingly and don't feature too much in the plot. Another part of the story that features strongly is the Adirondack mountains and the surrounding terrain that is described in so much detail you can imagine yourself there in amongst the stunning scenery.

Faced-paced, captivating and full of detail, this thriller kept me on the edge of my seat and guessing until the very end. I found the plot twist at the end satisfying and felt it tied the loose ends together well. I would definitely read another book by TJ Brearton.

Extremely compelling - Brearton is one to watch! Highly recommended.

I would like to thank TJ Brearton, Bookouture and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

I absolutely LOVED this spectacular, heart-racing, explosive roller-coaster of a book, packed with secrets and twists galore. Love this author's action packed, pacy writing that hooks you from the first thrilling page and does not let go, the characters and story staying with you long after the book is finished. I am still thinking of the characters now, and I will be for a while yet, musing on what I would have done differently in the circumstances - the mark of an amazing, thought-provoking book. This book and author go right to the top of my list of best crime fiction and I absolutely cannot wait for this author's next masterpiece.

Will Cross be able to find Katie before it's too late?

The chapters alternate between Investigator Justin Cross`s increasingly futile attempts to locate Katie as well as his investigation into who was behind Katie`s kidnapping and Katie`s desperate battle for survival.Katie`s chapters where my favourite parts of the story but I can't go into too much detail without giving away spoilers.I really liked Justin,Katie and Katie`s husband David Brennan,I liked the support that Jason got from his superior officers, the characters where a mixed bag of well developed, believable personalities. The descriptions of the scenery, the mountains and the forests where stunning and breath taking.

I was drawn to this book by the eye catching, spooky cover and the blurb, the story was definitely gripping and intense at times but to be honest it felt to me like there was something missing.I never felt a connection to any of the characters and the ending could have been a bit less predictable.I did enjoy the story enough to finish the book and would happily read more books by this author especially if they featured Justin Cross.

Many thanks to Bookouture for a arc of this book via Netgalley in exchange for a honest review.

"Despite Recent Crimes Assholes Have Committed, Women Are Still 99.9% Safe Going for a Run."

Not Katie Calumet. She's kidnapped while on a morning run and taken high up in the vast Adirondacks. State Police Investigator Justin Cross catches the case. Katie's husband, David, and her wealthy parents soon receive a ransom demand. With no response to the proof of life request, no idea who has taken her or where she may be held, the FBI is soon involved in the situation. Everyone is searching, but the area can be treacherous and the off trail forest is dense. The truth is, Katie could be anywhere up there -- or already dead.

This is a suspenseful and tense read that alternates between the point of view of Katie and Cross. She's very determined and resourceful -- and she has a secret that propels her to fight for survival. Cross is focused but is dealing with personal issues he can't take the time to examine or repair. The Adirondack mountains and parks are also so detailed and described, almost making that terrain another character in the book. The supporting police and secondary characters don't figure too much into the narrative, but the interactions between all do propel the plot forward.

Fast-paced and descriptive, this thriller kept me involved and turning the pages as the story evolved and came to a satisfying conclusion. I enjoyed it and will read more by this author.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the e-book ARC to read and review.

3.5* --> 4

One morning, out on a jog, Katie Calumet thinks she can hear a baby crying. She sets out to investigate but things go horribly wrong when she finds herself trapped in a van with two men who obviously don’t have the best intentions.

When Katie’s husband reports her missing, Detective Cross takes up the case. Initially, there are few clues to help the investigation along but they do all point to premeditation. Was Katie taken because she comes from a wealthy family? Will there be a ransom demand? Will Katie be found alive?

The chapters in this story alternate between Detective Cross and Katie. Personally, I found Katie’s chapters the more gripping as she struggled to survive her ordeal. Surrounded by dense forests with a limited supply of food and water and the threat of coyotes at every turn, I found that whole experience quite frightening and thought-provoking. I kept asking myself what I would do. Try to make a run for it or stay put?

That doesn’t mean the investigation into her disappearance left me cold. There’s plenty here to keep you reading as Detective Cross hits multiple dead ends and is pushed to his limits, all the while trying to deal with his failed marriage. But for me, it was Katie’s experience that made me flip the pages just that little bit faster.

T.J. Brearton delivers another well-paced story with an interesting plot and a few twists and turns and even managed to make me like one of the bad guys. With a healthy dose of tension and suspense, this crime thriller will most surely keep you hooked.

*SPOILER ALERT!*

First of all, a huge thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for introducing me to this awesome book!

The thing that made me request this book was it's absolutely awesome cover, fused with an interesting and catchy title. I read half of the blurb before clicking on the request button.

I had high hopes for this book and it did not let me down.

My favorite thing about this book was that half of the book focused on Katie's struggles. Usually, similar books focus on the investigator and the victim's family and even the kidnapper but rarely on the victim.

Gone Missing shows Katie not as the victim but the hero. The way she survived more than 2 weeks in the woods, and also managed to keep her baby safe, was awe-inspiring!

Gone Missing showcased some awesome characters, like Justin Cross who wouldn't give up and David Brennan who had enough faith on Katie to know she'd survive.

And as David said, I too was there just to give them company through this journey of their and every step was full of suspense and intrigue.

uh? I genuinely do not understand how this is rated >4 stars.

The first chapter of the book was interesting but after that it turned into a boring, repetitive slog. 👎👎 Would not recommend, unless you're looking for something to dull you to sleep.

jfbiebkejngkeng!!!!! Where the hell do I begin? Not only did the storyline pull me in straight away, I had no time to regulate my heart-rate due to the fast paced, jam-packed storyline! I have no idea how I am going to do this book justice with my review, but I shall give it my best go.

Once again, ‘Gone Missing’ is yet another book which makes me want to grab everybody and go ‘did you read the part where….? or ‘OMG what about when Katie….’. But I can’t! If any book clubs are needing a new book to discuss, I really do recommend this one. I’m half tempted to make my own book club just so that I can talk about this ‘Gone Missing’ until I’m blue in the face. Seriously!!

Katie heard a baby crying on her early morning run and she did what anyone with a heart would have done – went to check it out. Unfortunately, Katie’s decision wasn’t the best one, but she couldn’t have foreseen what was going to happen. Would I have done the same as Katie? Possibly.

Naturally, Katie’s husband is beside himself that his wife has gone missing, yet he didn’t seem to want to tell Detective Cross everything. I couldn’t put my finger on the vibe I was getting from the husband, but I know for sure that it wasn’t a good one. Well, the same goes for Katie’s family actually. There really was a lot more to them that meets the eye. But what WERE they hiding? Or was I just pointing my finger in their direction just because? Something wasn’t right, well, aside from the fact that Katie was missing obviously.

The storyline switches between the investigate led by Justin Cross and Katie’s time away from her loved ones. Reading Katie’s story was very gritty, intense, and very descriptive when it came to her injuries and other circumstances. Put it this way, I really was glad that I chose not to eat whilst reading ‘Gone Missing’. I’m really not convinced that I would have kept my food down. Of course I’m not complaining as the storyline required that level of description to make Katie’s story come to light in the way that it did. Without it, I don’t think that it would have packed as much punch as it did.

Comparing the two viewpoints, weirdly enough I actually preferred reading about Katie’s situation than reading the investigation side of things. I think that was because I felt that the situation with Katie’s family was just going round and round in circles. That said, I was completely engrossed when Detective Cross and his team involved maps and other forms of transport. Ahem – vague much? I really don’t want to give anything away but, that change in direction with the investigation had me on the edge of my seat as all I could hear subconsciously was the tick tocking of a clock. Would they get to Katie in time? Would Katie survive everything she endured?

I did feel that the story concluded rather abruptly though. One minute everything was fast paced and my heart was in my mouth, and the next minute everything just stopped and that was that. I’m not saying that the book should have dragged on – of course not, I just felt that the conclusion didn’t really match with the rest of the storyline.

However, I really did enjoy ‘Gone Missing’. It kept me on the edge of my seat most of the time, and I loved reading a storyline which had a completely different setting from the usual thrillers. It made a change to exercise my brain in different circumstances and I cannot wait to read another of T.J. Brearton’s books.

Thanks Bookouture.

Thanks to Netgalley for my copy.

Katie is kidnapped whilst out for an early morning run. She is kidnapped by two men who demand a ransom from her rich father. Katie's husband David is distraught and works closely with investigator Justin Cross but the area they are searching is harsh, millions of acres of forest land which contains just a few hunters cottages.

The kidnappers underestimated Katie's will to survive and her sheer bloody mindedness and tenacity.

This novels hooks you in from the beginning, it is fraught with tension and twists. This is the second book I have read by this author and he is a talented writer.

The title and the cover grabbed my attention as soon as I saw them and I expected a fast paced adventure once had read the blurb about the book.......,and this is what the author delivered, from the very exciting first few pages right through to the ending the action and suspense was pretty full on.
The characters although at times complex are fascinating and grow with the story.
The writing is easy to follow and the descriptive element builds a good constant picture of the story in your mind which is always important, this book was playing along in my imagination as I was reading it.
I guess my only small criticism would be the many place, lake and mountain names which at times were a touch confusing.
I would definetly read more from this author and would recommend this book.

This is the first book I have read by this author but will certainly be looking to read more. On her usual morning run Katie hears a baby crying. When she goes t9 investigate she is attacked and kidnapped. She wakes to find that is blindfolded and tied up. The drama then starts to unfold. Detective Justin Cross has a race against time to find out why she was targeted and to find her. This is a gripping read told from the point of view of Katie and Detective Cross and the police investigation. I thought the first half of the book was tense and had me wanting to read more but the book seemed to lose it’s momentum as it went on. Still an enjoyable read and one to recommend.

Are you a jogger? I have heard running help you calm your mind, escape your thoughts, and for Katie Calumet, escape your life, whether you want it or not! Whenever I see a woman jogging, I feel a ping of guilt. This time, I was glad I am too lazy to get out and move my buttocks!

Katie Calumet and her husband live a normal life, in a nice suburb, nothing to report! Well, until Katie wakes up early for her dose of adrenaline and hears a baby crying in a van near a park… This is why we should not be too curious! Minutes later, Katie is away from her dream life and the world as she knows it will be changed forever!

Gone missing follows the couple and the main detective in charge of the case… as well as an interesting take at how things can take a totally different direction from what you expected!

Katie’s abduction triggered anxiety on my side, I knew something was going to happen, of course, and I was eagerly expecting it, but the writing made sure the tension was here and the surprise, while expected, was indeed big!

From there, the beginning of the case raised a couple of red flags. I was surprised the police would get on the case so fast! A couple of hours are enough for a husband to worry, but officers getting interested so fast? Maybe it was due to the fact they lived in a small place and nothing much happened, but still, I would have felt it more realistic had it waited a little longer to get moving, especially with the press!
Then comes the husband. You know how much I love to suspect them, but here, we have a case of a caring man hoping and wishing, doing his best to get his wife back. Keeping him so close to the case, bringing him along, bothered me a little. I’m a sucker for rules and for keeping families away. Weirdly, cops taking liberties with procedures when needed is okay, but civilians… Too risky!

There was something subtle that happened in a marriage, he thought.

I really enjoyed the different narratives that allows the reader to grab snippets of the lives of everyone involved. Justin is a police officer I really found interesting, his personal story was a nice breather between difficult times brought by the main plot! I really felt for him and the consequences life choices can have on a family. His relationship with his wife was subtle and spot-on, and I was rooting for some happiness, or at least relief, in this horrendous “adventure.”

What I thought would be a simple case of kidnapping turned into a survival race and the perfect setting to test someone’s limits. Add a dose of family issues, things untold, and dangerous people, and you have a steady story with the exploration of different sides of everything. A kidnapping turning wrong, tension and money rising, the fight for survival, everything was settled to make me believe the story would follow a set of rules… Then I was surprised! There are layers to Gone Missing and the descriptive writing takes you to the limits of the mind and body, life and reality. Action, blood, twists, you get it all!

Three and a half stars!

On the other hand, maybe it was in such circumstances that true character was revealed.

There is a lot of potential in the book and the pleasure to be taken on a trip you’re not expecting is a great point! My hope for more realism was not fulfilled but it might just be me unable to let go of this fatal element!

Gone Missing is a different and addictive kind of abduction story, muddy, tackling the slow and fast sides of kidnapping cases (the waiting of families VS the fight from the kidnapped part!!!) in a great balance, dangerous and scary, a real good-time book! Well, at least for the reader!!!

I was offered to take part in the blog blitz, this unbiased review is my thanks to the publisher!

I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Gone Missing, a stand alone novel set in upstate New York.

Katie Calumet is out jogging when she hears a baby crying and before she can blink she is kidnapped. Investigator Justin Cross of the State Troopers takes the case and immediately has a bad feeling about Katie's disappearance but no proof.

What a read. The novel grabbed me from the start and didn't let go until the final page with plenty of tension, action and twists. It has two third person alternating narratives, Katie's and Justin's which work very well as the reader gets to contrast Justin's theories, gut instinct and investigation with Katie's reality. It also gives the reader more perspective than Katie has on what she's dealing with. It is an extremely well thought out novel.

Initially I found the host of police characters, except Justin, quite confusing but as I read on their roles become quite well defined, if not their characters but as peripheral players in the drama they don't need to be. I like the discipline in the investigation and hunt which seems very realistic to me although I was a bit puzzled by the responsibility given to Justin, like he was the only one doing any thinking. I think the build up of small clues leading to the suspects is also realistic and I chortled at the portrayal of the FBI who swagger in to "assist".

The characterisation is not particularly nuanced and doesn't have to be in a thriller. Katie is smart, resourceful and tenacious with a grit which is quite unexpected in a woman from a privileged background. Justin is also smart, resourceful and tenacious. Both are likeable characters and good protagonists. I found the Calumet family background very interesting and would have liked to see the dynamic explained in more detail but in reality I think the author struck the right balance as more detail would have been a distraction from the main narrative.

Gone Missing is a great read which I have no hesitation in recommending.

As soon as I saw this cover I knew that this would be a book I wanted to read – I am a massive fan of crime fiction so this one practically screamed to me – read me!!

The plot was great and I was gripped from the first few chapters.  I loved the pace and the characters were really good.  There were quite a few twists and turns and I loved the overall suspense from the writing style which was up there with the same high standard I have now come to expect from this author.  It was a well written story and I have given the book a four star rating and look forward to reading the next release!

Katie is out one morning for a run and hears a baby crying. She goes to investigate and then they’ve got her....
She sent her husband a text just before so the Police know she is missing but why her?
Justin Cross starts the investigation and it’s a race against time to find Katie.
Her Dad, stepmum and sister arrive to offer her husband support but day by day his hope dwindles.
I really enjoyed this book and liked the alternating chapters between Katie and Justin Cross.
I had to read the last few chapters in one sitting as I was desperate to know what happened.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for sending me a copy to read and review.

This book is a whirlwind of energy and surprise. It starts with Katie, the daughter of a wealthy entrepreneur, on her morning jog being attracted by the sound of a baby crying. On going to investigate she makes a big mistake and finds herself captured by two menacing men, who seem to know her and waste no time in tying her up and loading her into a minivan. Then nightmare begins. The fast-paced action is full of suspense and unexpected twists all the way through. The chapters alternate between the viewpoint of the captive, the captor and the searchers/investigators, and keep the reader invested in the story, and despite their length they kept me reading well into the night. The characters themselves are complex but well drawn and very believable, the villains are truly evil. Once the ransom demand has been made, the family’s financial secrets start to be revealed, and it seems that they are likely to put Katie’s life in real danger. However, Katie is a strong character and her determination to find her way out of the predicament that she finds herself in is commendable. The narrative itself is amazingly well constructed, and I found myself being enveloped in the action, feeling lost in the wilderness and wondering what I would be doing if I found myself in Katie’s situation. I also found the character of Justin Cross an interesting diversion as he struggles to find the right balance between his work and family life. It is clear that he is a man dedicated to his work and never gives up on finding this woman, something that her husband is also very focused on, and they never give up on her. The ending was interesting and most certainly satisfying.

Omg this took forever to read it was so dragged out. I almost didn’t finish it. This could have been a way better story

Wow!! Fantastic read! Paced really well. Not overcooked with useless words and scenes to fill the space. Every character remembered. Movie material. T.J. Brearton, wow!

fantastic story.

I didn’t know what to expect when I first started to read this story.
From the start I could not put it down.
It was brilliant.
I have read hundreds of books and articles this is the only time I felt moved to leave a review.
Thank you.
