Getting His Man

A love story worthy of an old movie… with a new twist.

Artie needs a hero, a man like those he’s always revered in Golden Age films. His drug-dealing jerk of a roommate got him arrested, and since his savior isn’t likely to sweep in and save the day, Artie calls a bail bondsman.

August has always imagined himself a hero from a black-and-white movie, but he’s never found a man willing to let him play that role—at least not until he gets the call from Artie.
Both of their dreams might come true, but not before August must use his skills as a bounty hunter as well as a bondsman. Artie is on the run for his life, and August must protect him and help him clear his name. Only then can they both finally get their man.

He has written all his life, it is where he finds his joy. In the 90’s, he wrote for gay magazines, but stopped because they wanted him to cut out story and romance, and write only sex.

Then through a few friends, he discovered the growing market of M/M Romance and was thrilled beyond words. FINALLY, a way to write the stories he always wanted to write. Adventure, romantic comedy, science fiction, and more, but with gay characters. And he wouldn't have to fade to black! People wanted to read the erotic as well. Plot and sex! HURRAY!

B.G. Thomas very much believes in The Law of Attraction and that "thoughts become things." A lot of things all started happening at once. He heard the words, "Leap, and the net will appear," and something re-kindled inside. He sent out a story and was thrilled when it was almost immediately accepted.

He believes that we are divine expressions of the Universe, each and everyone. "It is never too late!,” he states. “Pursue your dreams! They will come true!"

Criminey

This really was all sorts of charming and cute and fun.

Artie has the terrible misfortune of being caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. He’s quite the sheltered guy and a hopeless romantic, and truly just wants to find someone he can just be his goofy self with. Artie’s an adorable MC with a heart of gold, and one just wants him to get his HEA.

It’s just that shine that draws bondsman/bounty hunter August, to do things he knows he shouldn’t - and that’s to get messed up in the the troubles of someone he just bailed out. However, August can’t resist, nor let go of his protective instincts in helping Artie out, for he believes deep down that Artie is innocent and doesn’t deserve what may be coming.

What ensues is a bit of comedy of errors as Artie can’t seem to not stay out of trouble through really no fault of his own. He falls quickly for August, and when his situation seems dire, Artie only wants to save the tough handsome man of his dreams from the harm that inevitably seems to be ahead. August in turn, just wants to do what’s right and to make sure Artie gets out of this ridiculous and unfair predicament unscathed.

Rest assured, these two MC’s are very very likeable. When you throw in some sweet sexy, a bit of suspense, and Artie and August being absolutely perfect for the other, you have quite the nice read!

Narrated by Kenneth Obi, he set the tone just right and brought Artie and August to life. This was definitely easy listening, and it had me laughing out loud, shaking my head at the various shenanigans, and going “awwww” a few times. If you want a no fuss romance with good dashes of humor, action, and tons of sugary goodness, then this is for you. Enjoy!

Thank you to the author/publisher for the audio in exchange for a honest review

Oh my goodness, I loved this.

This book is full of old Hollywood movie goodness and read exactly like the movies I used to watch over and over again with my dad. If you love old movies where the rough and tough guy falls for the slip of a girl, you are going to love August and Artie.

Like something out of the old black-and-white romantic movies he liked to watch with his mother. It was romantic is what it was. Marvelously, wonderfully romantic.

When Arthur Bailey innocently eats a medicinal brownie from his pothead dealing roommate Willie, things go bad. Artie gets arrested and charged with something he didn’t do and needs to get bailed out of jail. The bail money will wipe him out of every penny he’s saved to move into his own place to escape the speed metal and cloud of marijuana floating in his shared apartment but what’s a guy to do?

When August is sent to bail Artie out, he gets more than just a case file. From the first look at Artie, August is lost in those big doe like eyes and feels the pull to protect this young man. When August realizes how stoned Artie still is from the brownies, he takes it upon himself to be the one to get Artie through this, no matter what.

Quick note: Now I say young but really August and Artie have less than 10yr age span between them, so young is used really in regards to how Artie looks because while he’s 24, he looks barely legal.

Anyway.

Told from the Dual POV of our leading men, we get to know them through their actions and inner dialogue. Both men have a strong love for classic romantic movies and leading men who are exactly their type. On first site, Artie fits August physically and emotionally. All August wants is a man to love and to take care of. To be that light and strength his man can depend on and protect his lover even if that means taking a bullet for him. August wants to be someone’s hero in every way. Artie wants the strong leading man to swing him around the dance floor while dancing his way into his heart. He wants the most romantic scenario to happen in his life.

I watched those old movies with my mom and my sister while I was growing up, and they shaped what I want in love. I want the stars. I want a happy ending.

August Sterling… I mean. That name alone is swoon worthy and August has that classic old school Golden Age of Hollywood Leading man vibe to him. Regardless of the character he could be playing, August has being a gentleman down to finest detail and the way he feels about Artie from the first look made me grin and I never stopped smiling. This book follows the formula of the classic romance movies so perfectly that I could see this translated to film. It helps to have all the movies the men like mentioned in the story along with the leading men they admired. If you haven’t seen any of the ones highlighted in the book, do yourself a favor and check a few out. You won’t be disappointed.

Now Artie, and surely he was an Artie. Never an Arthur, is downright adorable. Gosh, I love that he is doing everything he can to be an independent man but being so trusting, he trusted the wrong person and now has been arrested and has to go to court. When August comes to his rescue, it’s like all of Artie’s romantic movie wants have come true because August is Sam Spade, James Bond and Fred Astaire all rolled into one charming package from is dark hair to his sexy feet.

The way Artie sees August is the quintessential romantic hero with all the suave and debonair moves that come naturally to August and sweep Artie off his feet. I can say my feet felt a bit floaty as well while reading because August is swoony.

I love the old school Hollywood vibe of this book! I keep saying that because the story bleeds the essence of those movies. The big strong man of the "law" rescuing the innocent but gorgeous girl, *ahem* boy, in need and falling for them. Yup totally up my ginger alley.

Where was I with this? Goodness I got lost in my own head.

So, August wants to take care of Artie and Artie wants August to take care of him but they play this slow burn slow dance and try to keep things professional between them. But when the bad guys with the drugs and Artie’s roommate start tossing around threats, Artie takes it upon himself to be the martyr of his happiness and do what he thinks is right. He just forgot one small thing, August isn’t just a bail bondsman, he’s a bounty hunter and he knows how to track and find what he wants.

[...]Bailing people out? That’s just a few hours of my week. Getting my man is what I live for.

Oh boy. This got all up in your face hero/rescue/sexy times that had me blushing at my desk while I read. What August does to Artie, what August teaches Artie and what he asks of Artie was so sensual I think I almost melted right off my chair. I loved how every time Artie questioned himself or tried to do what he thought was right, August had to get his man and show him… everything.

Wow. Rambling Red needs to wrap this up, ya think?

This was another winner in the Dreamspun Desires series. Artie and August stole my heart as they formed a bond over their shared interests, over protecting each other and as they fell in love and got everything the movies they watched promised. Their own Happily Ever After.

I’ve only read a few stories by B.G. Thomas so far, but most have a main character offering a sense of innocence and naïveté in a sometimes harsh world. Artie is that character here, fresh-faced, young, getting out on his own at last, and into trouble caused by his shady roommate. August is his perfect counterpart, older and worldly, drawn to Artie’s ingenuous nature, a shared interest in old movies and a sudden desire to be his protector. When Artie’s case becomes more serious than either imagined, the protective instincts they both harbor put them at odds.

The author made deliberate, but subtle, effort to give a suspenseful plot the romanticized atmosphere of classic films, which was fun. Artie did strike me as a grownup Opie Taylor, using “gosh” as his favorite expression, but he never sounded too hokey or outdated. August was a nice mix of gentleman and tough-guy, a Sam Spade type, adding a sharper edge to balance Artie’s unsophisticated qualities. There are a few villains and other secondary characters, including Artie’s best friend, his mom, and a visit with some figures I recognized from “Trust Me”. It isn’t necessary to read that though.

The plot moved right along, with a touch of danger, some decent action scenes and avoided being over-dramatic. The dialogue was smooth, the scenes and premise realistic and reasonable. Honestly, I found the story refreshing and August and Artie adorable, even pretty hot at one point. I’m more than happy to be able to recommend this one.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.25 stars

Artie is 23 years old, but everyone thinks he’s a teenager due to his slight build and baby face. He really wants a steady man, but the men he meets all want him as a side-piece or bit of fun; none of them want to be serious with a guy who gets carded, hard, at every bar. Right now, Artie lives with Willie, a guy he knew from school. Willie’s mostly a pothead, who does a little light dealing to make his own rent. Artie and Willie aren’t friends, and Artie can’t wait to get his own place; he’s been saving his money for deposits. One night, when Artie comes home from a concert, Willie and his pals are blaring music and toking up. Artie’s upset about the volume and the unexpectedly large mounds of pot in the apartment. He accepts a brownie Willie gives him as a peace offering, not realizing the brownies are laced with pot. Woozy from the drugs, Artie passes out nearly immediately, only to be woken by the police.

Written in a playful way, this is a fun read for me. I was skeptical at first, but Artie is so damn cute and clueless, and I loved August's tendencies to 'protect' him, right from the first time they had met.
This actually not my typical book I craved, but I surprisingly enjoyed it a lot. I read it in one sitting, because, curious about what will happen to Artie and August after August bailed him that day.

There's no/less angst, just some 'scenes' happened along the way, and I knew it will happened eventually.
But August is a strong willed man, and he wanted Artie. Artie on the other side, with all 'I don't want anything happen to August', is a little annoying...but again, August didn't mind at all.
This is a fun story to enjoy, better on weekend if you're not into a 'heavy' book on your leisure time.

When I saw this book, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Although I love a good crime story with a bit of romance included, I’d never read anything about a bail bondsman/bounty hunter. But I have to say I was pleasantly surprised, because this book was a really sweet and enjoyable story, and I couldn’t help the smile I found myself with when I finished.

Artie Bailey is twenty-four years old but looks a lot younger. He’s always been attracted to men who are a few years older than him, especially when they’re tall, masculine and sophisticated. But Artie can’t seem to find anyone who wants anything more than sex from him. Everyone he meets that he thinks he would like to go further with all tell him the same story, that they want a manlier man as a boyfriend or husband material. Not that Artie looks feminine in any way, he’s just smaller in stature and looks young, so most people don’t really take him seriously. His best friend Ross is exactly what Artie wants in a man, and although Artie has a little bit of a crush on him, he’s happy for things not to go any further, because he’d rather have Ross as a friend than nothing at all. And he knows that he can trust and rely on Ross to be there for him no matter what. Artie shares an apartment with Willie who’s a small-time dealer, and he absolutely hates it because Willie’s always partying and smoking pot with his friends, and has no consideration for Artie at all. When the cops wake Artie up in the middle of the night and arrest him for drug dealing, he has a mini meltdown. Artie is as straight-laced as you can get. He doesn’t swear, he barely drinks alcohol never mind do drugs, but he’s also quite naïve and always wants to see the good in people and situations. So when he’s taken to jail at the police station, he automatically jumps to the worst case scenario and thinks his life is over.

August Sterling may be a bail bondsman and bounty hunter, but he’s not the rough and tough guy people expect him to be. August is a complete gentleman with impeccable manners to match. He loves eating at fancy restaurants, going to the theatre to take in a show, and relaxing at home with a nice glass of wine and some jazz music. He wants a man who he can take care of, but who can also be independent and know his own mind. August doesn’t want someone to control, but someone he can look after and share his interests with. When August’s office gets a call about Artie needing to be bailed out of jail, he goes down there not expecting anything more than another young guy getting caught for committing a crime he’s clearly guilty of. But when August sees Artie, he knows straight away that this is not one of his normal cases. Artie is a nervous, emotional wreck, and seeing him looking like he does, and clearly in need of help, gets August all worked up. Because Artie is exactly the type of guy August would go for in any other situation, and the fact that they’re standing in jail does nothing to stop the lust and attraction August’s feeling.

August can’t help but feel a kind of protectiveness towards Artie when he hears what happened to him, so he promises to try and help Artie clear his name. As the two men spend more time together, they become closer, even though August knows it would be unprofessional to go any further, but there’s something about Artie that makes him want to throw all the caution aside and just go with his heart. August and Artie discover that they have a lot of things in common, except for musical tastes, and the more they learn about each other, the harder it is not to cross the line that’s been set. When Artie’s life is threatened by some gang members, August starts calling in some favours he’s owed, because he’ll never let any harm come to the man he’s started to fall for in a big way.

This book was honestly just a fabulous little read. Yes, it was sometimes sickly-sweet, but I really didn’t mind at all. It was quite a slow-burn romance, but again it worked well for the story. August was a brilliant character, he was the classic dream man, and I seriously had butterflies in my tummy every time he did something nice for Artie. Another thing I liked, was that for once the cover model actually resembled the picture of August I had in my head, so well done to the author and cover designer for getting it right. I think it really does make a difference, especially when its such an important character.

I know not everyone enjoys extra-sweet romance, but for me, this was a winner, and I loved that I got the chance to read it.

Artie needed a hero...

Artie was the person I always wanted to be, but could never because this lioness don't take no mess, LOL. Too innocent, #brownies. Too accepting, the roommate. And too romantic, oh how romantic this dreamer was.

"...August has always imagined himself a hero."

August was truly a hero, despite getting stabbed on the job, his "evening started off as sweet as could be and ended in $h!t." After all, he had rescued Artie when his " evening started in heaven and ended in hell." As a bondsman, August learned to use his knowledge to help those who neded help. As a bounty hunter, he always got his man. This time, Artie checked all his boxes, and August could not help but fall for his client.

Laughter, family and a bit of suspense helped kept this story from becoming more predictable. With mention of both main characters loving old black and white movies and itching to live the dream, there was no way these two would not end up together.

I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this book without bias or persuasion from Dreamspinner Press.

I have to admit that I was a little worried that this book was going to be too sweet as I started it. It IS sweet, but with just the right amount .

The characters of Artie and August really couldn’t be better suited for each other, they’re both looking for an old fashioned romantic love. Their meeting shouldn’t be romantic at all and yet, it is. Along the way to happily ever after, these two come across some trouble and some bad guys. Artie is in danger and finds in August why he’s always wanted....a hero.

This book is sweet as I’ve said, but it’s also quite sexy. Artie and August are very compatible in all ways and it was fun watching them fall in love. I really am a fan of finding something just a little different in a book and B.G. Thomas gives me that with this one.

A delightful, fluffy tale of being in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong friends and being rescued by a knight in shining armor... er, I mean a bail bondsman/bounty hunter.

Artie, one of our MCs, is 23, but everyone thinks he's much younger due to his small build and baby face. He's not had much luck finding a guy who wants more than a quick trick in a bar, where Artie is regularly carded, because baby face. Artie yearns for someone to call his, but the cards aren't in his favor.

He lives with Willie, a sort of but not really friend, who smokes a lot of pot and dabbles a bit with dealing on the side. Artie isn't happy with the weed that's in the apartment, and he's been saving up his meager earnings to get a place of his own.

Upon his return from a concert he attends with his real friend Ross, he finds Willie and cohort and a large amount of pot and the music blaring. Scared because of the drugs and pissed off with the ungodly noise, Artie does take one of the offered brownies, not realizing that they are baked. And I mean, BAKED. Which Artie is also, shortly after. Falling into bed stoned is one thing, being woken up by the police is quite another, especially when Artie is being charged with possession and dealing of an illegal substance and find himself in need of bail.

Whoopsie.

Enter August, our knight, who's a bail bondsman and bounty hunter and manages to get Artie out of jail on bond, at the cost of basically every single penny Artie's been saving to get out of the shared apartment. As long as Artie doesn't skip town, August is sure that he can get Artie out of trouble with the Po-Po. And the slim, small man, still half-stoned, just tugs on his heartstrings and appeals to his inner hero.

If you love the old Hollywood movies themes in which a damsel in distress (Artie) is rescued by a super smart and super handsome hero (August), with tons of movie references, this is the book for you. Artie is delightfully clueless and helpless, and August dreams of being the man to be Artie's hero.

Written in the author's usual emotionally charged and somewhat breathless style, this is a must read for all fans of BG Thomas. It's of course, as most books in this series, somewhat unrealistic, but I loved the tropes utilized here, and the expected happily ever after was definitely satisfying.

Artie, despite being idealistic and slightly TSTL, does have a good heart, and it is because of his feelings and fear for August that he gets himself into additional trouble from which he then has to be rescued. But fear not, August is the quintessential hero and saves the day.

Due to the limitations put upon authors in this series, there are limited explicitly intimate scenes, but what there was is well done and really brought their connection across. I was rooting for them both to ride off into the sunset together.

A delightful tale that's well worth your time.

Arthur “Artie” Bailey is shy, sweet, caring, fun and a little naive. He has enjoyed himself on an evening out with his friend Ross, but when the evening comes to an end, he has no option but to go home to a not so great environment. And before he knows it, he’s been lured into eating his favorite sweet, a brownie filled with marijuana, by his sleazy roommate, Willie. Now, Artie finds himself being awakened from a sound sleep, and arrested.

August Sterling is manly, patient, and lives the life of a bachelor with his furry companion, Max. He has his own private bail bonds business, and happens to get Artie’s case—luckily for Artie, Ross has co-signed for the bond. So, still having aftereffects from the brownie, August takes Artie to his home. After all, Artie is worth a twenty-five-thousand-dollar bond, and August can’t afford to take a hit like the if anything happens to Artie.

Artie and August eventually form a connection, in family, movies, music and a pink car. Even with August willing to protect Artie, and prove his innocence, Artie has his doubts about trusting anyone. Now Artie is in fear for his life, his family, and August when he’s threatened by Willie, his associate, and even the mob. Artie goes on the run, and even though it disappoints August, he doesn’t give up and tracks Artie down. But August and Artie still have lots of danger to face.

I really have to commend B.G. Thomas for taking a chance and bringing an old classic movie/music feel to this storyline, in a modern day setting. Both Artie and August are sort of old souls, heroes in their own right, who love the old movies with romance, music, and dancing. Artie was especially fun, never knowing what he would say, and trouble just seemed to follow him. The plot moves along at a good pace, and does have its suspenseful moments along with family warmth, humor and a sweet romance. I also grew up watching and listening to the old classics mentioned, much the same way, and it brought back memories which really made this an enjoyable read for me.

Finished "Getting His Man" by B.G. Thomas. It's the story of young naïve Artie who finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time and he is arrested and jailed. August is a bail bondsman who is hired by Artie to bail him out and clear his name, but Artie inadvertently gets into more trouble and it's up to August to protect him.

Artie finds himself in a jam when he eats a brownie he didn't know was filled with marijuana and a drug bust lands him in prison, even though he didn't do anything. He's scared out of his mind, but finds comfort in August who would guard Artie with his life. There's an intense attraction between them, but they try to remain professional as client and bondsman.

This story contains elements of a classic romantic black-and-white film which happens to be Artie's favorite type of film and August's fantasy of being a hero from one of those films. Our tough yet compassionate main man swoops in to save the young innocent in trouble. The desires of both men compliment each other perfectly: Artie longs for that strong, dependable gentleman and August wants someone that he can love and protect.

As the story progresses, our two heroes learn more and more about each other, having shared interests and become more intimate. At the same time, Artie finds himself on the run from criminals and flees to prevent August from getting involved, but August uses his skills as a bounty hunter to track Artie down and keep him safe.

I really liked this story and how the characters' relationship developed in their actions. August becomes more protective as Artie gets deeper into trouble. Their relationship also progresses gradually and doesn't feel rushed, even though both men find each other very attractive and desirable. It's a very sweet romantic story and, as with all of B.G. Thomas's books, very well-written and contains realistic, fleshed-out characters.

Artie is a sweet young man that has never been in trouble in his life. That all changes one night when he comes home to his roommate with a pile of Marijuana on the coffee table. To make things worse he eats a brownie e was offered not knowing it was a magic brownie. He gets arrested and has to get a bail bondsman,

August is taken immediately by the sweet, innocent, boyish-looking man he comes to see about bailing out of jail. The young man ticks so many boxes on his type list. When he leaves he sees the young man sitting outside the jail, still high from the brownie and offers him a ride.
Things escalate and they find themselves not only attracted but tangled in trouble.

I loved this story, but I haven't read a B.G. Thomas book that I haven't. I fell in love with Artie immediately because I have a thing for sweet and innocent and heroes to the rescue.
August is quite the hero. manly, but not too alpha. It is pretty sweet but the Dreamspun desires mostly are. The suspense was good but light as well. There were lots of old movie references troughout the books and I will admit, though I love some classics I didn't know them all and it sort of threw me out of the story at times.
If you like sweet romances, instalove, suspense, bounty hunters, and an allover fun story you will like this one.

A Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Review An Alisa Audiobook Review:

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

I really enjoyed this story. Artie is so adorably sweet and innocent but not at the same time, he just trusts easily and trying to make it on his own. Artie is just what he has always wanted in a man but tries hard to keep some distance between them, at least at first.

These two were perfect for each other, down to the dream of dancing the night away with the right person. I loved how they were both romantics at heart though August doesn’t outwardly show it as much but no matter how different they are in the end they want the same thing. Part of Artie’s innocence is he can’t stand the thought of seeing anyone hurt and I could see how much he hurt himself when trying to keep August and his family safe. August has a very determined personality and he uses it to help protect and guide Artie in just the way he needs.

Kenneth Obi did a great job narrating this story. The voices he used for each character were perfect and helped me to connect with their personalities and emotions. The different voices also helped with keeping track of the story.

Cover art by Bree Archer is perfect and I liked having a visual of August.

This is part of the Dreamspun Desires collection and this does fit the brief very well and I did have to read with this in mind.
Despite Artie showing as very naive and young, despite his protestations, I did enjoy the first part of this.
I was glad
It was after the ranch that I felt he really became too childlike almost for me.
The danger did ramp up again towards the end.

Artie is so sweet and a bit naive, and August is a great hero who is ready to sweep him off his feet. This story had romance, some danger, and two guys learning that love can happen just like it did in their favorite old movies.

I loved seeing characters from some of the author's previous books. It's always special to see those earlier relationships flourishing and giving our current characters hope. The entire book was a lot of fun.

Above average, well written cute read. There was an obvious reference to the black-and-white classic Hollywood movies, not only because they are quoted, also because of how the MCs are. But I'm not fond of insta love, and of August playing the rescuer, even though Artie did want to be rescued.
