This is the 5th book in the Maya & Neel’s India Adventure Series and focuses on a special Hindu festival that happens in autumn time.
Navrati is a special festival which celebrates female goddesses. Depending on which part of India you visit, the festival is celebrated in different ways and the focus will be on a different form of the goddess. It is a 9 day festival (nav means nine and ratri means nights) that reminds most Hindus of a great battle that took place between Durga (the main Hindu goddess of war, strength and protection) and a demon called Mahishasura. The festival celebrates the victory of Good over Evil. The nine days are dedicated to Goddess Durga and her nine Avatars – the Navadurga. In some places, on each day of the festival, a different form of the goddess is worshipped but this can change depending on the area of India. For example, the book tells us that In Gujarat they worship the mother Goddess Amba, or in Tamil Nadu people worship Saraswati (the Goddess of Learning).
Some readers might disagree with the versions of the festival that are described but there is no way that the authors could include every example. Hinduism is a complicated religion involving several different groups who all follow their own version of the faith. There seem to be thousands of gods but Hindus believe there is only one Supreme God called Brahman who is known by many different names and in lots of different forms. The people of India vary by region and each has their own different language and culture so they recognise the one God in a form that is specific to their part of the country. The book uses simple text and nice bright illustrations to explain what seems like a complicated festival but all you need to remember is that the people are thanking the goddess for her protection (whichever form she is in) and that goodness will defeat evil. The info zoom sections and pronunciation guide are a really good learning tool too.
What I liked about the book was the topic. You often see books about the more widely known Hindu festivals such as Diwali (Divali) or Holi but Navratri is not often seen in British books or on TV etc. I also liked the quiz at the back to recap what you have learned. This is a good way to learn some of the basic facts about this important Hindu celebration.
This book is very inviting and the presentation is very global in its approach. The cover is bright and the illustrations are both adorable and offer authentic cultural representation which leads to wanting to open the book to find out more. For the young reader, this book is geared for them to understand the scope of the beautiful cultural diversity of India. Plus, the characters are kind, respectful and eager to learn, so they are very good role models. The book is simple yet full of pertinent information. It shares the stories behind this celebration plus how it is celebrated today through many different parts of India. I loved learning all the names and how to pronounce them, of foods, clothings pieces, family members and sharing this eye-opening piece about another culture and how it draws parallels to other celebrations of light throughout the world. So many different ways to celebrate the dispelling of darkness by light and dance all over this wonderful world. I was impressed by how much information was shared and just loved the endearing illustrations that just brought the celebration to life. It is fun that the book (plus it’s series) has a YouTube channel named Cultural Groove connected to it and I liked hearing this story being read by Miss Ajanta herself! https://youtu.be/nCiwGHWp90k With this story, this book helps to create a connection to and respect for the beauty of the diverse stories that populate our world.
I loved this book. I think it is a good read for all kids to learn about different cultures around the world, in this case it is Indian culture and festivals. Even if you don't have Indian background, it doesn't matter. This book will spark a lot of joy in your kid to travel and meet with people from different cultures. It is teaching the God names, what to eat, what to wear and how the celebrations are done during Navratri festival. I loved the recap part in the end, where there is a short quiz for kids. It is not necessarily for all kids, but it might help to improve your child's memory as well.
This is a wonderful book that teaches readers about the Indian culture and the Navratri festival. I have never heard of this festival and don't know much about the culture and found this book so informative and educational, but it's written in such a way that is also very entertaining and engaging. There is a sweet storyline mixed together with lots of fun and interesting facts. The illustrations are beautiful and unique. It's a great book to teach kids about different cultures and understand and respect other people's traditions. We need more books like this in school libraries across the world to encourage multiculturalism. Recommended!
This book is very thoughtful. I liked the pronunciation guide at the beginning and the insights into how other parts of India celebrate. This was all new information for me and my daughter and it was explained in a way that made it easy to understand from food to clothes and common celebration items. My daughter really enjoyed the colorful illustrations!
We enjoyed reading about the cultural celebration and appreciated the careful effort to show and explain each food, clothing item, and dance used in the story.
This book was so informative! I learnt so much! The story was told in a simple yet engaging way and the illustrations were so full of colour! This would be a great resource for classrooms when teaching students about cultures around the world.
I'm a lover of all things Indian and I was delighted to have found these books that teach, not only the children but also the adults like myself, about the culture of India in a very nice way. Congratulations to the author and I have already bought the other books to carry on my "learning".
This book does such a good job introducing kids to a brand new culture. Not only will they learn about different ways to celebrate, they’ll learn about new foods, clothes, and even vocabulary words. A great introduction to Navratri.
In this book, Maya and Neel travel to India to celebrate Navratri in the state of Gujarat. In the book, we learn about the local culture and traditions of this special festival.
I love this book, the illustration is beautiful and the story is very engaging.
This is a beautiful series about the adventures of Maya and Neel around India's cultures. If you loved this book you probably will love the rest of them.
