The Composer's Legacy

Rate this book
Esteemed California music professor David Whealy is drawn to the other side of the country to investigate the circumstances behind his unexpected inheritance. As David probes deeper into the secrets of his benefactor, James Burton West, he finds more than just a wealth of unpublished music on the order of the great composers.

David's benefactor knew precious little about his own estate that had been in continuous family hands since 1724. He knew nothing about his colonial ancestor, a Thomas of historic import, nor the origins of that ancient iron key which held a secret even West knew nothing about.

A secret which may well have redrawn the map of the United States.

I enjoyed this book and would suggest it to readers that enjoy history & music.

The combination of music, history and a touch of romance was woven together skillfully. My favorite part was the description of the music. No, it's more than the description; it's the way the music brought the book to life. Whether it be the sense of discovery of the works of a heretofore unknown composer, to the personal exploration of that music, DeStefano captures the emotion, intricacy and lyricism of those parts of the story. Especially entrancing were the sections where Carla imagines the music she is reading off a score. The author creates a sense of magic and emotion in those passages that draw the reader in.

I also found the portrayal of the world of academic musical programs intriguing. I have only come to love classical music in the last few decades, so I have zero experience or insight into that setting and really found it mesmerizing.

Discovery is one of the main themes of this book, and the author manages that theme skillfully. The discovery of the music of West, the discovery of the history of Delaware and Pennsylvania and the discovery of the relationships between Carla, David and Beth. It just works.

One challenge of this story is the point of view. It is written in omniscient third person. At first, I thought the author had just lost track of the point of view, but within a few pages I realized he'd made a conscious decision to pursue this approach. Now, some readers may find this off-putting. In modern writing the predominant point of views are third person and first person. For many years second person and this omniscient third person have been unpopular. I would put forth that readers today are mostly out of practice in reading this style of storytelling. While I was able to become more comfortable with this, it did jar me out of immersion a few times.

Another issue was related to this. I've always felt that the omniscient narrator is hard to manage because it really leaves open a path to 'telling, not showing." The temptation to fall into a more folktale style of writing is difficult to resist. The author struggles with this in a few places understandably, but nowhere near as often as one might expect.

The book was technically rather clean--the typos were few and far between. Clearly the author paid great attention to detail.

Overall, this book proved to be an interesting read. I will definitely check out this author's next work.

THE COMPOSER'S LEGACY is a winding tale that walks the line between mystery and historical fiction. The story follows David Whealy, a music professor on the west coast, as he searches for the history behind an unexpected inheritance on the east coast. Professor Whealy discovers that he has inherited more than a home, he's discovered a full body of music that turns out to be quite important. THE COMPOSER'S LEGACY follows the main character's search through history, slowly unveiling more and more of the story while incorporating a detailed amount of historically accurate facts to tie everything together. The pace is not fast, but is consistent, and does not take away from the read. The most compelling element of the story is the author's inclusion of musical elements and his ability to include it within the written word without it feeling out of place. A feat I would have not thought possible before reading this book. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed THE COMPOSER'S LEGACY and will check out more from author Michael DeStefano. If you like highly detailed and involved mysteries with historical overtones or are a music buff, you'll love this book. (I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review)

A novel approach
A dead man can be as powerful as any alive. Michael DeStefano proves this in his debut novel, The Composer’s Legacy. His novel approach to the central characters captured my interest from the start and hooked me until the end.

James Burton West is the dead composer. He is not the key character and yet he dominates this novel from his grave, completely subduing our hero, the celebrated music professor Dr. David Whealy, who is set on a mission of discovery – the legacy left by his unknown benefactor.

Music is the central theme of the story and DeStefano, who is himself a composer, skillfully weaves his knowledge in every aspect. Be it storyline, characterisation, or the intriguing mystery that gradually unfolds, music is such an intrinsic part of the ambience, a reader can almost hear the classical melodies playing softly in her head.
The reader discovers West’s mysterious legacy alongside his beneficiary in an intricate weave between past and present and two continents, with intrigues extending as far back as the reigns of English monarchs Charles II and James II. From England to the American colonies, clues litter every page until the mystery is resolved in a big denouement Hercule Poirot style. Here, the parties involved assemble in one room and the key components of the “whodunit” are methodically arranged to give an account of the bigger picture.

If there was one minor aspect that left me wanting in this well-written debut, it was the unknown fate of Beth Grey. And it bears a mention only because I preferred her character to Dr. Carla Macklin’s, David’s colleague. Beth plays a key role throughout most of the story. As a former admirer of West and the only character acquainted with the dead man, she is also the only link between recent past and present. Moreover, she is David’s new Delaware neighbour and a potential love interest to boot. Through a good part of the novel, the triangle between Beth, David, and Carla seems a certainty. In fact, I found myself rooting for Beth to win David’s affection. Since it wasn’t to be, I would have loved to find out whether a happy ending was in the offing for her too. I hope the author will bear this in mind when he comes up with a sequel.

Interesting to note that DeStefano has also composed a classical piece to go with this novel; a lovely composition that greatly adds to the musical flavour of the story. All told, I was pleasantly surprised by this novel and will definitely look forward to more of this author’s work in the future.

The Composer’s Legacy by Michael DeStefano was a very intriguing book. The author did a great job of telling the story through the use of well- formed characters, major and minor conflicts, historical references, and interesting storylines.

Dr. David Whealy’s character was intriguing because of his commitment to excellence as a professor, colleague, and conductor. Dr. Whealy also displayed tenacity and drive to share Jim West’s musical scores with the world and to solve the mysteries behind Jim’s past. The conflict he faced with the dean of music at UC-Davis provided more insight into Whealy’s character, as he battled it out with Dr. Cobbett regarding the difference in how one approaches their responsibilities to their students, their department, their college and the community.

Another interesting storyline with Dr. Whealy, was the friendship and work relationship with colleague Dr. Carla Macklin. The author provided comic relief and romance to the story, with Carla and David at the center. At first, I found Carla’s character a bit pushy and patronizing, but her personality and tactfulness were instrumental in pushing characters to face challenges and make smart and brave decisions in uncomfortable, tough situations.

Besides appreciating the use of many other different characters to the story and enjoying having the main character Dr. David Whealy spend time between California and Delaware ( due to work and his inheritance from Jim West), I also give much praise to this book for how well the author described musical performances, scores and different composers. I also felt that the author did a convincing job of what it could be like to be a composer, professor and colleague in a prestigious music department of a university. I have no experience or knowledge of instruments, symphonies and orchestras but Mr. DeStefano, in his very first paragraph of the story, introduced us to this musical world with open arms. The Composer’s Legacy was a delightful and well written book.

As a composer, his songs were breathtakingly delicious. Even if some parts leaned toward the dissonant, I felt that it didn’t really matter. Why so? Well, that was because I found the whole thing exceptional and I believe that the things that I didn’t enjoy so much as part of the package.

I believe that there has to be high and low parts of each composition to absorb the mind and the senses of the listener. Just like this book, he saw fit to create a novel that would be as mysterious and engaging as his soundtrack.

The life of the deceased was as elusive as the enigmatic sounds of the music he had written. The story of love, jealousy, and a little bit of discomfort from being attracted to two beautiful women added a spicy element to this enchanting and interesting to read. All of this made the book a charming and fantastic read until the very end.

Read it and fall in love with the story!

Thanks for the wonderful work you’ve put into this book. I would say, this is a creative and enjoyable to read. You are a very talented man and it's time you get recognized for your writing abilities and musical compositions. I was surprised to know that you are also a composer, and I was astounded by the songs you had written for this book. You are indeed a wonderful man and I have genuine respect for all that you do. Great work!

Moreover, I also loved the way you wrote this book. Why so? Because you put heart and soul into the story and the characters. The storyline, the script, and how the characters all come as one to create a story that is emotionally connective, mysterious, and realistic even if it is clearly fictional, is what made you stand out. That is why I recommend this book as one of the most wonderfully entertaining books I’ve read in a long time.

Cheers to you and the work that you do! I highly recommend this!

I was smitten by the musical works he had composed. He is such a talent! Loved all of them.

He is such a wonderful composer and I think this is his chance to show the music industry and the readers that his talents can move emotions and bring our spirit into new dimensions.

His work is exceptional and he sure has serious skills. His songs are a must to listen to. More so his books. Loved this book and I look forward to the other one he had written. It was a delightful read as it talked about a composer’s life who never had the chance to share his songs with people; even more so to share his family history to the world.

His story is remarkable and the readers taken along for the ride as the progagonist, Davd Whealy delves into a mystery that is fascinating and delightful to read.

This is a wonderful book and has some brilliant songs to enjoy when reading.

Such a smart way of promoting himself as an artist, and mind you, he's really great at it too! How amazing!

Loved the songs he had written. They sounded distinctive, cool, and breathtaking. I loved all of them. I also look forward to hearing him play professionally. He should be recognized as a composer by putting his work on YouTube or create a recording that should be recognized by the music industry.

He is very smart to start this way, and I just know that he will soon make it big as an artist. His writing abilities are of the same caliber and I enjoyed reading this book.

I cannot wait for more wonderful stories and to hear more songs from Mr. DeStefano. He’s a thrilling writer and composer that anyone who listens to or reads his work will become a fan.

A must-read!

The Composer’s Legacy is Mr. DeStefano’s debut novel. I enjoyed it from the beginning because of the author’s writing style and its creative storyline. The plot is well-thought out and original; the characters are intelligently crafted. The story is contemporary, yet it’s involved and intriguing mysteries span centuries and two continents. I admire the author’s devotion to research; the facts intertwine with fiction, which added layers and depth to the story. What made this story superb is that the author not only infused his musical talent into the character to bring him alive, he also composed beautiful pieces to complement the story.

A musical masterpiece from a highly creative and intellectual author.

More than anything, I am into pop and RnB music, but I liked how this novel focused on the inner lives of the musicians and composers. David and Carla are the first ones you will meet in the story.

They are both music professors and musicians. David later discovers that his generous benefactor, James West, was a great composer who never went public. West himself is an interesting character too.

One of the most heart-warming scenes in the book was when David was with Beth and he was showing her West’s high-quality compositions. David played one of the pieces he studied earlier, as the notes and the emotions rushed by. Beth was simply awestruck while looking out the bay window into the moonlight. It was beautiful for me because it was at that moment, I believe that David immortalized West and his music with his playing. Such a great legacy!

This will indeed make for a truly enticing movie!

Be consumed by the goodness and energy that this book holds. I loved the story because it talked about a man’s deep longing to give of himself and to share his work in complete anonymity. This is not typical, but typical. What do I mean?

The story is not typical. You will not hear of anyone leaving his possessions to a complete stranger, let alone make him an heir to a wonderful home and a plot of land that has been with his family for centuries. However, it is typical for an artist not to want to be known when they are still alive. Most artists do art because it is an expression of what they feel and they want it manifested in their art.

This is an example of a typical artist, who doesn’t even know that he had this talent, just pouring out his love and the deep longing in his art. That is why this book is wonderful. Because you will be able to empathize with the emotions of the artist and the deceased benefactor, James West, and the lead character David Whealy, as well as David’s love interest, Carla Macklin and their love triangle with another woman Beth Grey. This book is a dance of so many issues that will make anyone feel so captivated by all of their storylines and their agendas.

A truly interesting book and a great way to engage yourself in something spiritual and enticing. You have to read it, and then feel the joy that comes with it. Check it out!

This was a wonderful read and I was enticed, giddy, and mystified by it. This is because the story was about a remarkable man who left all of his work to a stranger. This stranger, David, will find out a lot of juicy details about his deceased benefactor and some other information that will change the course of history. This deceased benefactor, James West, went through a lot and it was only in his art where he could express how he felt inside. David’s contemporaries were all blown away by the musical legacy West had left behind. Compositions that could stand up along side the greatest composers in history. Similarly, David is in the same phase as James. Notably brilliant as a professor and performer, withdrawn because of fear of loving the wrong person, and yet focused on his craft, he became the best person to receive this gift because James knew that he would appreciate his output. Ultimately, the listening public found enough favor with them to encourage David to have more of West’s work performed!

This was a feel-good read and a wonderful way to share the life of composers and artists. I really enjoyed my time with this. Thanks for writing a quality book!

I loved the story because it is mysterious and thought-provoking.

Imagine a stranger, giving a man whom he didn’t even have the chance to meet his legacy and his treasure. Imagine a man who has a family lineage with a very rich history, and a man whose life was all about being a devoted husband and Air Force veteran and yet lost everything just when he was about to retire from the service. It sure is a compelling read. Sad at times yet rich in spirit.

Anyone will enjoy the book, that is why I recommend it!

I also loved the songs he had inserted onto his website, which were all inspired by this book. I was surprised to know that he doesn’t only write wonderful stories, but he also writes compositions that are as awesome as the book he had written.

Indeed a great author and an excellent composer. You sure can’t miss it!

I enjoy classical music, so I was intrigued by the premise of this story. Having said that, we are not required to have an understanding of the subject as DeStephano expertly guides us through the intricacies of the world. The author has clearly researched the history of Delaware and Pennsylvania, whilst helping us to travel a voyage of discovery, interweaving the well-rounded and believable characters.
The novel is written in the ominiscient third person point of view, which I personally like. I began reading this novel during a busy time, and I feared it would take me a while to read it. However, I was so drawn into the life of the characters, beautifully written by the author, that I finished it within a few sittings.
I look forward to seeing what DeStephano will produce next.

As a reader who enjoys intelligent and engrossing books The Composer's Legacy has to be of my favourite in a long time. The plot is carefully crafted and I suspect a fair amount of research has gone into producing it. I thought the music theme and references were very competently entwined into the story and made it very original.

The Composer’s Legacy by Michael Destefano is a nicely paced and well fleshed out novel that revolves around the mysterious inheritance bequeathed to the story’s protagonist, David Whealy, a gifted musician and assistant dean of music at the University of California. Whealy’s unknown benefactor, one James Burton West, turns out to be something of a melancholic recluse having lost his family in tragic circumstances. But more significantly, he also seems to have been a musical genius, having scored countless astonishingly polished works for both orchestra and chamber ensemble; works that had until now never seen the light of day.
Alongside this compelling storyline, we get a pretty good view of David’s everyday life that focuses on his rapport with and dedication to his music students - as well as his close relationship with his teaching colleague, Carla Macklin, and the confused emotions he has for her. His relationship with conceited College dean, William Tipton Cobbett III is, on the other hand, anything but warm, and the conflict between the two men is deftly drawn through wholly credible, gritted-teeth dialogue.
Whealy inherits West’s home on the Delaware coast, and it is here that he discovers the unknown composer’s body of work and some historical artifacts including a very unusual key. It is also here that he encounters Beth Grey, his neighbour with whom he delves into West’s past. The chemistry between Whealy, Macklin and Grey is well portrayed and helps to keep the reader engaged.
The musical references are also nicely detailed and the life of the music faculty feels convincing, as do the office politics.
If there’s only one minor niggle, it is the way in which the narrative unravels the historical research. While this is undoubtedly accurate, its detail and complexity do tend to slow the pace of the narrative a little. Admittedly, this may be less of a problem if the reader, unlike myself, is well versed in American colonial history.
Overall, this is a well crafted, plotted and compelling tale. There are tinges of Dan Brown in its structure and mystery. Though unlike Brown, the characters that populate these pages do feel real and well-rounded. And Destefano has a good ear for language, as well as music. For anyone with a passion for classical music and American colonial history, this skillfully penned yarn will be a real treat.

The Composer’s Legacy by Michael DeStefano is a captivating exploration of music, creativity, and discovery through the lives of two central characters: Dr. David C. Whealy and James Burton West. David, a musician and assistant to the Dean at a university, appears at first to be the focus of a straightforward tale about a man's immersion in music. However, the plot soon takes an unexpected turn. Early in the story, David learns he has become a beneficiary of the will of James Burton West, a man he has never met.

DeStefano skillfully guides David—and the reader—on a journey to uncover the enigmatic James Burton West's legacy. James was a prolific artist and composer, and as David delves deeper into James's life and work, the reader is invited to join in this exploration. Through David's discoveries, the narrative vividly brings to life James's artistic and musical creations. The author's passion for creativity shines through, offering insights into the minds of musicians like David and his colleague Carla. DeStefano adeptly balances explanations for both musical novices and seasoned musicians, making the book accessible and enriching for a broad audience. In addition to the rich musical and creative themes, the author interweaves historical facts, adding depth and context to the story. This blend of history and creativity makes David's journey all the more engaging and multifaceted.

The Composer’s Legacy is an intriguing and beautifully crafted novel that celebrates creativity and history. It is highly recommended for readers who appreciate stories that delve into the arts and stimulate curiosity.

Great music! Sounded like a genius of the arts. I’m genuinely impressed.

His work as a composer is exceptional and the way he is marketing himself as such books he’s writing is a very clever way of doing so. Not only is he clever, but he is naturally gifted too. His music is engaging, relaxing to the mind, and telling the story of this book. He should be recognized as an artist and as an author because he deserves it and I have no doubt that it wouldn’t be long that his work will be noticed by the music industry and his books will be given credit for their wonderful and touching spirit. Great job!

I believe in his abilities as a composer and as an author. He is exceptional on both counts. The story of this book may be purely fictional, but the way he had written it sounds so appealing and realistic that it will seduce you until the end.

Loved it and I know anyone would too! Read it!

And why is this guy not gracing the Music Industry? He is such a talent! I'm amazed!

I loved most of his songs, my favorite was the Sea Shanties for his new, unpublished novel, The Old Corsair. I loved this in particular because of the melody and pacing. As the title suggests, it does feel like I’m in the sea and listening to the sound of the waves and feeling its majesty. I also liked that he added some fun tones and cool songs in some of his compositions making it a varied mix that the young and the “not so young” will enjoy. Great job!

The Composer’s Legacy is lovely as well! I loved the mystery, the love affair, and the way the characters were all put together to create a wonderful story that tells us of the cool history of a remarkable deceased man that will amaze you.

It sure was a wonderful read. This will surely delight and excite anyone. Feels like watching a movie!

I look forward to seeing this movie on the Big Screen!

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed it even just by reading about it. However, I know that this will become even more successful if actors and actresses are making it more alive and feel sensational. I want to feel the actress and see their beauty. I want to listen to the songs being played together with the movie, especially near its end. The music is special and the pieces are awesome to listen to. It made my mind clear and calm. The eight original works by the author are a perfect accompaniment when reading this book. Aside from that, the story was so intriguing and filled with a lot of mystery that you won’t stop reading it till the end. I also loved that he added some romance to the story. It made for a more exciting to read.

I recommend it for its great story, good music and subtle, yet enthrawling appeal to the readers.

You have to check it out!

Very unique and engaging soundtrack. Loved them!

Michael is a great composer. I listened to all of the tracks for this book and he blew me away! Some of the sounds coming from his compositions were so calming for the mind that I found myself truly connected to the book I was reading. For some tracks, it sounded like he wanted the reader to feel the mystery of the novel and at some points, he wanted us to feel the love that emanated from the lead character and the object of his affection.

This book is truly fascinating! He is very smart to link his creative outlets, first writing his book then scoring the music to compliment it. What a unique way of integrating his talents. A maestro indeed!

Cheers!

He is brilliant, exceptional, and fascinating. Such great effort he had put into this tale.

I’m fascinated by the fact that he can write great stories and music. The first thing I checked was his compositions and you can listen to them on sound cloud. The melody, the tone, and the unique integration of the musical instruments were what I loved the most. He sure is an artist!

Loved his creativity. When it comes to the quality of the book, it is also as good as his compositions. I liked that it talks about his passion too, which is music, then love and romance.

Loved his work and I’m sure that most people will too. I’m inviting you to read it and experience the wonderful feelings and emotions you will feel when reading this book.

Inspiration, Love, and Enchantment! It was a wonderful read for me and it sure will be for those who will read it.

I say it is inspiring because it talked about a man whose life was sorrowful because of the loss of his family. He poured all of his feelings into his compositions and when it was finally discovered by his beneficiary he found masterpiece after masterpiece.

His home and his family history were even more fascinating! The moment David, Carla, and Beth learned that about James Burton West was the moment they understood that he was truly a special person with a rich history that influenced his artistic mind and talent.

Surely a must-read! Fascinating, mysterious, and inspiring.

Loved it! A wonderful story that will surely entertain the readers.

The theme is about creativity, love, inspiration, and friendship. I loved reading it because it relates directly to me, who I am, and what matters to me. Love of family, valuing the friendships that you’ve built and using inspiration to power your creative juices will help you bring about the masterpiece within you. We usually rely on hard work to achieve the things aspire to. However, when we use love and inspiration, it becomes even more powerful and it evokes a sense of joy in the people who receive the outflow of your work.

This was what I realized from this book, the more I sync with the story and the characters, the more I fell in love with it.

Read it and be inspired!

I liked the sound of the title and hoped for an enjoyable novel. It was OK, but, at times, I found the narrative slow going, like trying to wade through quick setting cement.
The characters weren't too bad and there was the inevitable romantic involvement between two of them. However, for me there was a lot of detail about the musical scores that went over my head. I'm a music lover, but I like to listen to it, not dissect the scores. I like to know a bit about the story behind the piece I'm listening to and the narrative of the piece, but the theory behind the notes fails to interest me.
I was disappointed when I got to the end, as I felt there were still a few loose ends that needed to be addressed.

The Composer's Legacy by Michael DeStefano is a beautiful work of fiction, based on a historical personage, that combines the arts with the great skill of storytelling to offer readers an amazing treat. David Whealy is a renowned California music professor who tumbles on an unexpected inheritance. It all starts with a simple, short letter that reads: “You have been named sole beneficiary to the estate of Mr. James Burton West. Further instructions will be forthcoming in accordance with the wishes of the benefactor.”

David’s life changes suddenly as he finds himself catapulted to the other side of the country, digging into the significance of his inheritance from one of the world’s best music composers. He finds more than unpublished music, and it seems to David that his benefactor didn’t even know the extent of his own wealth, guarded in the family from one generation to another since 1724. Now, he’ll find out about his colonial ancestor and an iron key that opens to a secret that could even change the destiny of the entire nation.

The Composer's Legacy is a great work, brilliantly plotted and intelligently written. The reader will enjoy the appreciation of fine music, the excellent writing, and the gripping plot. Michael DeStefano is a great storyteller and his writing features some of the finest literary styles, including a masterful use of the epistolary, great dialogues, and an engaging narrative style that will have the reader gripped from the beginning to the end. The cast of compelling characters, the well-handled themes, and the strong storyline are elements that set this novel apart as a work of great entertainment.

The Composer's Legacy was a refreshing deviation from my normal daily reading and really spoke to my love of history. Music connoisseurs will appreciate the incredibly detailed descriptions of compositions and orchestras, but I was pulled in by the historical mystery. I have a soft spot for digging through old archives for lost gems of information and especially for America's colonial period.

The pacing reminded me of listening to NPR. If you are looking for something with a fast pace and a lot of action this book may not be for you, but if you enjoy rich, quality content and an intellectual reward for sticking around The Composer's Legacy is a great choice for your to-read shelf.
