Deadly glacial caves, murderous speleothems, and blazing flame spirits.
Jubal Van Zandt is running out of time to find a cure for the plague. His only hope is the Garden of Time, where actual, physical time is grown and stored. Anything that can be stored can be stolen. For the greatest thief in the history of the Revived Earth to get his hands on a supply of extra time, he and Carina will have to fight their way across a treacherous ice cap, through an endless blizzard, and into a cave full of homicidal rock formations.
But the biggest threat to their dynamic duo isn’t the immortal guardian waiting to destroy anyone who tries to make off with the Garden’s treasure. This time the greatest danger is a lot closer than Jubal wants to admit.
I am being forced against my will by Goodreads to have a capital E at the beginning of my name, even though the correct spelling is "eden." So there's that.
But also . . .
I am invincible. I am a mutant. I have 3 hearts and was born with no eyes. I had eyes implanted later. I didn't have hands, either, just stumps. When my eyes were implanted they asked if I would like hands as well and I said, "Yes, I'll take those," and pointed with my stump. But sometimes I'm a hellbender peeking out from under a rock. When it rains, I live in a music box.
But I'm also a tattoo addict, coffee junkie, drummer, and aspiring skateboarder. Jesus actually is my homeboy.
Garden of Time by Eden Hudson has Jubal looking for a way to extended time, he has a disease that is killing him. He also is a real creep too and has let Nick go this whole time under the control of an evil witch. He could have been rescuing him...
Yet another superb entry in what has become one of my favorite series of all time. Maybe my favorite. If you're somehow reading this review without having previously dabbled in the world of Jubal Van Zandt, do yourself a favor and go grab the first book in the series. You'll race right through 'em, filling up with feelings, trembling with tension, shaking with laughter, and ultimately you'll be so happy you read these books. They're incredible.
The Revived Earth's greatest thief is back, and he's fixin' to risk everything to save the life of the person he loves most: himself.
Dying of the plague, Jubal needs to haul ass to the time caves AKA the Garden of Time. Based on some murky mythology, he feels his best hope of beating his disease is stealing physical time. He is a thief, after all. This is how he solves problems.
The fountain of youth he seeks is located near the polar ice cap. You know what that means. Winter is coming, perils and all. We're talking snow and ice and blizzards and tundras. Hiking. Climbing. Rappelling. Yet again, we get to experience a whole new atmosphere and location, rendered in a magical level of detail that played in my mind like a movie. I can't think of a story world that has captured my imagination the way this one has.
But the real heart of the story here is Jubal and Carina's relationship. He's hell bent on winning her over, whether she's engaged or not, and he's crossed many an ethical and moral line in his ongoing scheme to do so. They are a fascinating pair, incredibly charming and sort of disturbing at the same time. They spend much time alone together this time out, and it's tense and affecting. There's such a strange tangle of feelings to process here. I think this aspect made this my favorite book in the series so far, and yet I'm not even sure what to think of it.
Jubal is a brilliant main character. He forces the reader to experience empathy for someone even if they think maybe they shouldn't. It's a strange and vulnerable position to find yourself in, and I can imagine some readers will want to reject it, but I think it's mesmerizing and unique and beautifully human.
These books are feats of world building and hilarious dialogue with great action and intrigue, but there's something more going on there. Something hypnotic that grabs hold of the imagination on a deeper level that's hard to describe. I was filled with such mixed feelings as I tore through Garden of Time. I don't know what the heck I want to happen from here, I just know that I want more, and I want it ASAP.

Review: Cover art rocks.
Let’s be clear here….I can’t stand the character Jubal. A manipulative, sociopathic, undermining sneak trying to steal a good mans woman. While you hope he suffers a million deaths by a pack of fanged venomous Girl Scouts, he still manages to slip the Reaper, time and again. In short I just want him to fookin' die…by any means possible. Carina is a fantastic character that was built to balance shjt heads sarcastic, unfunny diatribes. While this un-dynamic duo scrape their way across the pages, you are forced to revel in their interchanges with interesting turns to the story line.
This really only got interesting once the quest to find the the Garden of Time began. The movement increased with Jubal’s sarcastic anecdotes favorably diminished and the world building was allowed to breath deeply, unfettered.
This author has a hidden talent in the form of world building that couples superbly with the character development; once the movement is enjoined. Her expression is bent in the wrong direction, IMO, to sarcastic denigrating witticisms that derail the story line with embarrassing cringe worthy Jubalisms. You can be a misogynistic sociopathic asshole and still be palatable to read. It almost lends itself to that format by mere quality of association. There is no need to go over-the-top in every instance that Jubal opens his mouth. It makes for a character you really despise when I think the intent is to root for his success in all things. But I am not a mind reader so who knows.
Still a very good read by one of my favorite authors.
I LOVED Jubal’s acerbic wit that had me wincing as he bombarded Carina’s hard shell, but man, that woman could take it and dish it back with no words, just pure attitude.
I LOVED Jubal convincing Carina to once again join him on a dangerous trek, a journey to the Garden of Time as he seeks out a way to forstall his demise at the hand of a deadly and incurable orgasmic plague. I mean, if you have to go....what a way to go. But the Revived Earth’s greatest thief is not going down without a fight.
I LOVED their “jaunt” through snow, ice, mud people...wait. What? Yeah that and more.
I LOVED that Nick, Carina’s fiancé, was no where in sight because, well we know where he is...I know, it’s kind of mean of me bit I still love it, Jubal you devil.
And last, I LOVED the cliffhanger. This cliffhanger is one for the ages. Oh Carina! You didn’t! Oh Jubal! Your kigao’s warning was just a tad bit off this time!!
This author just gets better and better which is why my kigao shouted in my ear, 5 STARS!
In this book, Jubal and Carina are on a mission to find the Garden of Time, where Jubal believes he will find the means to delay his death until he can find a cure for his illness. Meanwhile, Nick is now enslaved by the witch Re Suli, who was provided with part of Nick's soul by Jubal in the previous book. Nobody is really having a very good time.
I don't want to go into too much detail and reveal spoilers, but as usual, I was very caught up in the story when I reached the end. I am eagerly anticipating the next book to find out what happens next!
I would definitely recommend reading the previous books in this series before this one.
Just so you all know I received an ARC of this book. Mostly because I want to get the series first, but you know, gotta be transparent. Plus, I bought the book as well, gotta support my authors. Ok, what can I say, the cover is pretty cool , I know it's lame, but yeah, I do judge. The story starts off where the previous book ended, slim on the overview which was nice. JVZ is a prick like always, and the ending was awesome, I was not expecting it at all. Deliciously F'd up is the first thing that popped into my head. I do wish the books were longer, but beggars can't be choosers. An amazing effort.
I laughed, giggled and smiled through the entire book - our lovable lier, cheater and self proclaimed best thief in the world started facing his fears and mental blocks. Almost got to the next level with Karina but didn’t quite get there before his deception with Nick was discovered. He is still dying but has more time now. Karina is off to rescue Nick and hopefully undo the damage his slavery caused. I can’t wait for the next adventure!!!!
I've read 28 books this year and the top spot goes to these 4 (and counting) novels as a unit. It's rewarding as a reader to follow a story that flows as naturally and unpredictably as this one... and it looks like it's setting up something really epic...
I loved the first book. I thought the second was good in a different way, and the third one made me sad. The Garden of Time was better, for me, than all of them, and I really liked that first book, did I ever.
TGoT goes back to the dynamics of the first book, the back and forth between Carina and Jubal, but they’re more developed. It’s like the feel of of an old pair of sneakers that might fall apart at any moment, but they’re still your favorites.
There are spider cyborgs, mud people, chainswords, bacon pepper pizzas, craft beer, snow caves, and pouches full of other fun stuff. And there are secrets, the kinds of things real people are so scared will come out they hide them from themselves.
It’s worth reading the first three books just so you get to read this one.
