But her immortality comes at a high price: she must kill to maintain her sanity, or else risk flying into a bloodthirsty rage.
Establishing herself as an assassin for hire, she only accepts contracts for targets who deserve to die. Her system works to keep the bloodlust at bay. Until she is hired for the grandest job yet.
Easy is a city overrun with violent, powerful gangs in post World War 3 America. Her contract is anything but easy: clean up the city and make it safe for civilians again. To accomplish this goal, she will have to turn the gangs against each other, while struggling to control her bloodlust … and her attraction to the sociopathic second-in-command of the most vicious gang in town.

Wow, how to say how good this book was. It was a superior story, excellent, well written, the characters like Jess, toad and the group are good strong, likeable characters. Even the bad guys are good strong characters. At times things get quite violent and gruesome, with the fighting, however it's necessary to the story. It would be hard to write a book with a beast and mafia groups without it. Jess is hired to help with some major corruption. Is was great watching things unfold, friendships made, enemies fight, finding out about the beast. There was mystery, backstabbing, a joking toad, a beast in need of killing, just to much to relay. A must read for sure.
In the second book in this very exciting series Tonal receives a new name and goes as Jess and she has been hired as an assassin and finds out that she needs to clean out the town called easy. She feels that her primal urges and her blood lust are becoming almost unbearable at times and is afraid that as only human killings control this a bit she has to decide who to kill so by taking on contracts she is a bit on top of her natural demands and she chooses to kill the horrors of the world even though deep down she feels she should be classed as one herself. Jess still does not know what she is and why she was chosen to become immortal. Once she arrives in the town called easy she soon finds out that nothing is easy in this town but its name! The dregs of society have congregated here, drug dealers, whores, thugs all part of the numerous gangs which have turned the ordinary citizen’s lives in this place into a living hell and the roads of easy into rivers of blood and Jess was hired to sort them out and bring back a semblance of normality to life. She sets out to do so in her own very efficient way, with a friend called Toad who she becomes attached to. A very exciting read especially towards the end of the book, where the action picks up and Jess or the Ma Qui does her work. But who is this Ma Qui? Hopefully we find out more about this in the next read but for this I am sure we have to wait unfortunately! This series is definitely one not to be missed, there is still so much we have to learn about this amazing woman/predator
My first book from Monique. A different take on the shifter saga. This book takes us on a journey to take back a town from the gangs that have over ridden it. The main character is a shifter, who has to shift and kill to keep it under control. She tries only to kill "deserving" people, like drug dealers etc. She is recruited by the townspeople to rid it of the gangs. An interesting book and plenty of action from all fronts.
"So what is the difference between a killer and a murderer?" - Jess
Do the means truly justify the end? Immortal, yet vulnerable, Jess is searching for the elusive answer to what and who she is... caught up in a dystopian, post apocalyptic world, she finds herself slowly losing her humanity; subsumed into her beast... Unless...
Dark, graphic and gritty, this story takes no prisoners, only survivors...
Amazing as usual. Tess doesn’t die or age. She only takes assassin contracts of those that deserve to die. Fast paced and impossible to put down until I finished to find out what happens. Love these books by a superb author. Received an ARC.
This powerful second book reminds me of the TV series Dexter, which I love. This is Tonal growing into her destiny, and how she makes it happen. Page turner, and it was hard for me to put it down and do grownup stuff like work while I was reading it. Good job, Ms. Singleton!!
This book was equally compelling as the first one and the prequel. And I equally finished it in one breath. The story continues some decades after the revolution described in the first book, as the main character moves towards North. She comes to aid people in need in the territory of the rebuilt New Orleans, now called Easy, which is now in the ruled by powerful and ruthless gangs in the aftermath of the war. I would suggest reading this book after the prequel Warmonger, as it briefly mentions the male character in charge of creating chaos. Tonal is more mysterious than ever, now going by the name Jess, given to her by her newly acquired friend Jack aka Toad. She has more or less come to terms with her nature, although there is still some inner struggle. She learns more about herself and her origins, while she cleans up the city. This is just one episode in her long term effort to bring peace and justice to the innocent, as it becomes clear from the rumours and snippets of conversations surrounding her legend. What becomes even more clear in this book is that the author tackles some existential questions of human nature, such as lack of value of human life, greed for power, lack of morals and sadism in those with power, fall of societal structures and near complete breakdown of family values. Exploitation of women, and especially girls is an ever present underlying topic. Tonal is a symbol of putting things right. She is not tied to a religion but to a myth of a woman who comes when needed and where needed most. She punishes those who deserve the punishment most and therefore corrects deviant behaviour and intentions. Her thirst for blood is a constant, testifying to the constant fault of human nature. There are three books in the series and the prequel: Warmonger, Primal Nature, Nature of the Beast, and The Beast Inside.
Really good but if you don't like reading about blood and gore then this might not be for you. She has always known that she was different as not only has she lived a long time but she also has a need to kill. Killing humans is the only way to satisfy that need. To stop herself from going down as a merciless killer she takes on contract work. Only those deserving to die will be on her hit list. A job takes her to a city divided by bloodshed and gangs with one Mafia type bosd that the others own their loyalty too. However the citizens have had enough and have tasked her with bringing the city under honest rule. Watch as she manipulates people and events to try to bring that about. A well woven plot that will have you riveted to the story with some really terrific characters. She is tough and gutsy with a desire to find out more about her origins. Her "hero" is a dwarf with an overwhelming desire to right wrongs and a sweet, funny personality. Oh by the way did I mention that she is also a shifter. I received a copy in a giveaway.
This was my first book by this author and while it is second in the series it can be read as a standalone. I enjoyed it enough to seek out the first in the series Primal Nature. The main character Jess is very interesting. She is a shifter (cat) who can't control her need to kill specifically humans so she contracts herself out this time to clean up the gangs in Easy. Let the fun times begin....This is an extremely well written book with a unique plot and a kick a$$ shifter heroine. I really liked Jess and her way of feeding her need to kill by imposing a sort of morality to who she kills. Don't you sorta wish you had that problem at times? Sit down, get comfy, grab a glass of your favorite libation and settle in for a fun ride. Recommended.
I received complimentary copy of this book for voluntary review consideration
Wow! I really enjoyed reading this book. This is actually the first book I've read by this author, and even though it is the second book in the series, I was able to keep up with what was happening rather easily. Full of action and danger...this book is just what I needed to escape my regular reads. A woman shows up in a town packed with evil types...and leaves no name so she can avoid leaving a trail.
With this story you get exposed to the way the darker side maintains an element of control in town, and you get to see just what 'Jess' is ready to do about it. The intimacy is without romance, which was a bit of a welcome change from my usual reads, and Jess is an absolute bad@$$ throughout this book. I would definitely recommend this read to anyone that is looking for a supernatural themed book with an edge.
The second book in this series is nothing like the first and in a way I am relieved because the first was really sad. This story was equally as good but so different. it was about a town overrun by gangs. What I found so good in this story is how the author managed to make the gangs work against each other. Seeing how she juggled each scene was mind boggling. Everything worked like clockwork and was so precise. it was no mean feet. I am really so impressed it was all very exciting and though it should have been shocking and bloodthirsty it did not come across that way. It just all seemed right somehow. I do however have my reservations about some things but because of spoilers I am loath to mention them so am keeping those thoughts to myself till I have read the whole series.
A magnificent story with strong, complex characters that grab you by the throat and don't let go.
Jess is a fabulously written, dark character, with many flaws that make her more relatable. The writer brings the whole cast together to make a flowing storyline that is unique and compelling.
Although this is book 2 in the series, it can still be read as a standalone.
I highly recommend to anyone that loves fantasy/paranormal fiction.
I received an ARC of Nature Of The Beast and this is my honest review.
A strange-ish, narrative writing style really works for this very interesting storyline and main protagonist, with emotionally complex undertones as the author examines the various motivations and personalities of a great cast of characters. Wonderful, layered plot, excellent post-apocalyptic world-building, and plenty of action. Book three will go into my reading list, even though it is priced above my normal ebook average.
When I started typing this review, I was going to say I didn't like it as much as the first book. Then I tried to think of why I felt that way and realised I liked it just a little better. It was full of action and all new characters. Some from the past were alluded to for the upcoming third book.
I read this before I read the first book in the series. It clarified some of the questions from the first book, but introduced a lot more questions. The main character is still mysterious and troubled, but finding the way to some answers to her Immortality. Great futuristic adventure!
The second installment is as god as the first one, probably better. The story is tense. Jess, the main character is hired to free the city “Easy” from violent gangs. A not so easy and bloody task. The same time Jess must fight her personal demons. I’m eager to follow Jess into her next adventure.
Kings of was nice to read a shifter novel without the human of tempting to live within the community as a whole! I feel sorry for her not knowing why she's the way she is, but she does make a fierce character, well done Monique!
I'm amazed that this author can write so many fantastic novels, I hope that she never stops writing. Her books are some of the best Entertainment I have read and worth the time to read them. Thank you for a very fun entertaining read.
Again with all the questions and legends. I just want the story to flow. I want answers. Maybe she'll make it to Asia? Great story. No romance. And waiting on book 3.
Wasn’t sure about this book at first, but it pulled me in securely. Fascinating and at the I find out it’s the second in a series. It stands alone well.
