El Extranjero o la unión en la diferencia

El texto que aquí presentamos se trata de uno de los primeros escritos de su autor, y puede leerse como una introducción a una de las facetas de su obra: la que concierne a la inspiración cristiana y al dinamismo de las trayectorias individuales en la espesura del cuerpo social.
El encuentro con el otro, con los otrosaguijonea el deseo de "lo que nosotros ignoramos", que nos lleva hacia otros encuentros donde podemos buscar al Dios otro. Llevado por el movimiento de la "vida común", el viajero aprende la modestia al experimentar siempre más intensamente los límites de su particularidad.
Aceptando dejarse cambiar por la experiencia de los otros, consintiendo a la apertura del espíritu y del corazón ante la mirada del extranjero, cada uno aprenderá a ser más creativo y más libre, y también más solidariode todos aquellos con los que tendrá que construir "la unión en la diferencia".
La presentación está a cargo de Luce Giard, quien hizo la revisión de la traducción y es en la actualidad, la intérprete más autorizada del corpus certeauriano.

Michel de Certeau, historian, cultural theorist, psychoanalyst, and theologian was one of the most multifaceted French intellectuals and scholars of the late 20th century. His concept of everyday life practices was of signal importance for the development of cultural studies in the Anglo-Saxon world. His use of space as a key category in the history and analysis of cultural practices has also influenced the later “spatial turn” in history and art history. Finally, his works on early modern mysticism constitute ground-breaking research in religious studies and theology. Interestingly enough, these studies on mysticism were less influential in the Anglo-Saxon world than they were in France or Germany, whence the distinction between the “American” (of the cultural studies) and the “European” Certeau (the historian of mysticism). In spite of the diversity of his oeuvre, Certeau saw his scholarly work as one, integrated, intellectual enterprise. Asked about his scholarly profession, this French Jesuit used to answer that he understood himself in the first place as a historian of spirituality. Understanding the meaning of Christian mysticism in an era in which it started to lose its self-evidence required a broader focus, embracing the most divergent and complex cultural developments up to his own time. The gradual broadening of his interest field also required new methodological directions, which he found in Lacanian psychoanalysis and in semiotics, resulting in his own topographical way of thinking. He became a public intellectual in 1968, after the publication of his La prise de la parole, a book in which he applied his insights on the role of the mystics in the 16th and 17th centuries to the protesting students in the streets of Paris. From that moment onward he started to develop his theory of everyday life practices, resulting in a number of different books, of which L’invention du Quotidien 1980 was the most elaborate.

Es una verdadera lástima que la prosa farragosa de Michel de Certeau le haya impedido comunicar sus ideas brillantes y aventureras. Quizás tampoco le ayuda mucho la selección que hizo Luce Giard de los textos. Intentando serle fiel al orden cronológico, Giard no entrega una colección adecuadamente tejida. Yo veo en este volumen de El Extranjero numerosos textos que hubieran cabido bien, por ejemplo, en La debilidad de creer. Otros, como el capítulo pedagógico de “Dar la palabra”, hubieran tenido pertinencia en alguno de los volúmenes de La cultura en plural. Ni la prosa pulida, ni la organización de los textos cooperan para hacerle justicia a las ideas maravillosas de Certeau.

Los creyentes que busquen entender, con honestidad y sin temor, las complejidades de ser cristiano en un mundo moderno necesitan pasar por las ideas de este jesuita. En este libro en especial, encontrarán respuestas audaces para un problema en concreto: ¿cómo creer en Cristo en medio de tantas creencias que incluso rivalizan entre sí? La respuesta de Certeau está dada en el título: reconoce a Cristo como El Extranjero. A leerlo con atención para saber qué significa esto.

Dit is de eerste keer dat een werk van Michel de Certeau in zijn geheel in Nederlandse vertaling verschijnt. Het is interessant dat het om een van Certeau's theologische werken gaat en niet om het in de angelsaksische wereld veel bekendere cultuurtheoretische "L'invention du quotidien." Er bestaat geen volledige Engelse vertaling van "L'étranger ou l'union dans la différence."

Certeau's poëtische en soms bewust dubbelzinnige Frans laat zich maar moeilijk vertalen. Het Nederlands blijkt een bijzonder weerbarstig en lastige taal te zijn om Certeau in te vertalen. Des te meer waardering voor het knappe vertaalwerk van Willy Hemelrijk, die erin geslaagd is om een getrouwe en leesbare vertaling van "L'étranger" te produceren. Het interessante inleidende essay van Inigo Bocken is een zeer welkome aanvulling.

Hopelijk zullen er genoeg lezers zijn die erin slagen om door het weerbarstige taalgebruik en de soms lastige zinsconstructies heen te bijten. De theologische en spirituele reflecties van Certeau hebben veel te bieden en verdienen het om ook in het Nederlands taalgebied gehoord te worden. Deze vertaling biedt een belangrijke handreiking aan lezers die het Frans niet voldoende machtig zijn om Certeau's werk in de oorspronkelijke taal te lezen.
