Hayley Carter is ready, willing and able to make her mark on the world, starting at the non-profit organization she has just been hired at. Like a whirly-gig on steroids she is ready to take Washington D.C. on and come out on top, and trust me, she is ready, armed with a cause near to her heart, a self-help regime that promises to re-create her as a woman in charge of both her personal and professional lives. Look out, world, Hayley is getting better every day!

Too bad her human frailties and Murphy’s Law makes her first-day vault into the “big people’s world” more like a trip and stumble that puts her iced drink squarely into the crotch of a god with a keen sense of humor, intelligence and quick wit and geez, he is oh-so-wrong for her.

Brody has always been the twin with less, bad grades, little promise to become another Brainiac like his brother, but he is a star on the baseball diamond, the maestro that orchestrates the plays, the newest star catcher for the Washington D.C. Soaring Eagles. Too bad, he doesn’t realize all he has to offer the world, but one quirky blonde may be the yin to his yang, the peanut butter to his jelly or the Fruity Pebbles to his cereal milk…yeah, sometimes love is like that.

Get ready to fall into Aven Ellis’ latest romantic ray of sunshine and fun, SQUEEZE PLAY and prepare to laugh out loud, feel your heart beat to a giddy rhythm and discover the fun of falling in love when you really weren’t ready with the guy that really couldn’t be right for you, and yet…
Aven Ellis makes romance sparkle and shine! She creates flawed characters that are perfect to get to know and will steal your heart from page one! Sit back and get ready to let Ms. Ellis make your reading day!

If you can forgive a football phrase when reviewing a book featuring a baseball player, to me this really was a book of two halves. The first half was fine, but I was struggling to connect to the characters a bit, so although I was enjoying what I was reading, I just know the author normally does better.

And then in the second half, well last third (do any sports have thirds?) suddenly everything clicked into place, courtesy of one live sporting fixture where I may have started to understand baseball slightly and from then I was really really interested in Hayley and Brody's story.

The story had me laughing from the first page and Hayley is a great character, she is passionate about things she believes in, must have every single kitchen appliance known to mankind, and sometimes has no filter between her head and her mouth! The initial meeting with Brody was a classic, and will be memorable for a long while.

Amazingly for me with an Aven Ellis book though I did not bring Brody off the bench and promote him to full blown book boyfriend, I'm not sure why exactly and even started searching the net for hot baseball guys to try to get a better feel, and ultimately, I'm sorry to say I was missing the central sport of the book being Ice-Hockey. Baseball just doesn't for me have quite the same feel to it...then again I do prefer my sport fast and furious, as opposed to more sedate.

As I say though my feelings did start to change towards the end of the book, as I got to know not only Brody better but some of his team mates, and I suspect that once I'm more used to Baseball references and players that I will love the next books in the series. Please note although I seem to be fixated on the sport - no knowledge or interest in sport is needed to enjoy this book, its in bite sized amounts and as Hayley knows nothing about Baseball at the start its really beginner level stuff.

The book predominately focuses on their relationship, but also their families, and Hayley's work, where I found I was also laughing a lot at her bosses reactions towards anything social media! I found the work she was doing for the non-profit foundation really interesting.

There are some beautifully romantic moments, I'm just sorry that Brody didn't capture my heart fully.

Thank you to Aven Ellis for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

booktok i have a personal vendetta against you. i wanted simple and easy baseball romance and what i get is an almond mom author writing her fmc as extremely fatphobic and overall just an extremely insecure human being. when are skinny authors gonna stop writing their “curvy” fmc as these shy anxious insecure annoying ass girls? like come on! if youre gonna have curvy rep in your books at least do it right! she doesnt need to lose weight to be hot! like seriously wtaf? this book is seriously so damaging and might as well be considered ed inspo.

New to me author with a light-hearted, sports-related romance (and I can never turn my back on one). This one was a little too sugary for my taste – but cute and not a bad way to pass a rainy afternoon. The characters were likable, but maybe a little childish in their behavior. The angst was practically non-existent. Steamy without the details spelled out.

DNF. Just a bit boring and I didn’t care for the heroine. She came off as pretentious and not relatable. Also the story and writing were excessive. It’s great that she meets someone “quirky” and “unique” like her who also is interested about the things apparently no one else thinks of (I rolled my eyes at these points) like why earl grey is called earl grey. And she was like “this is crazy no guys my age are like this and I’m not attracted to any guys my age either he’s so special”. Blegh I just have a bad taste in my mouth I can’t stand it when the author tries so hard to make the characters their definition of “cool”

The beginning of this book had promise and everything I was looking for an easy read, but after about 20% of the way in it just went downhill. I wanted to DNF so many times but I just got it done. It was the same thing over and over, and I have no interest in even skimming the other stories. I also think this story should come with a trigger warning for body image issues. The MC continues to discuss this issue and it was almost toxic how it was written. The MC was a size 10. A very normal, average size of an American woman. I get insecurities (I am a plus size woman myself) but this was such a focus in a negative way. I wanted to give it one star, but I think the author has promise.

Cute, but lacking something

This book was good in a cute sense. The meet cute was fun, but for most of the book, everything was too easy. It never seemed real. The conflict, when it came, blew up quickly and was quickly resolved. I can’t believe I’m complaining about a fiction book not seeming real enough, but it kept bothering me and pulling me out of the story.

Also, while I can totally relate to feeling like I need to be perfect at everything, the book started to feel “preachy” after a while.

Overall, a nice book, but lacking in reality.

Sweet story that was a little too perfect and cheesy for me. There was a bit of conflict in the last 10% which ended within about 3 pages.
I liked the cherry blossom 🌸 scene. And all the early dating scenes really.

After graduating from college Hayley starts her first job at a non-profit organization. She's very proud and is ready to participate in the professional environment of Washington DC. Her brother needed a lot of extra attention and care when he was growing up and as a result Hayley lived her school years in the shadows, but now it's time for her to shine. That doesn't go completely according to plan though. On her first day at work she stops at a coffee shop and accidentally spills her ice coffee on the most handsome man she has ever seen. She gives him her email address, but will he get in touch with her?

Brody is the new catcher of the Washington Soaring Eagles. His life has always been about baseball and he was lucky being an athletic kid, because he didn't do well in school. He has the feeling his twin brother Brady got all the brain cells of the family and that next to him people only see Brody as a dumb athlete. The moment he overhears Hayley talk to her best friend he's interested in her. The fact that she has no idea who he is makes it a lot easier for Brody to connect with her. Will he be brave enough to show Hayley his true colors?

Hayley is a sweet person. She has the idea people only notice her when she's helpful or does things perfectly and has her own personal workbook to help her achieve her goals. Hayley is quirky, funny and really considerate towards others. Sometimes she's so busy making someone else feel good that she completely forgets about herself. It made me smile that Brody likes her just the way she is. They're both caring and kind and I loved how they complete each other right from the start. They have a connection on many levels and their funny banter made me laugh out loud multiple times. I was hoping for them to find the courage to accept themselves and to feel comfortable in their own skins.

Squeeze Play is a sweet and light love story laced with humor. Aven Ellis's characters all have creative and unusual character traits that make them stand out and this makes them unique. I'm a little weird myself and I really like to read about the little things that make people the way they are. I love Aven Ellis's sense of humor and her stories always make me chuckle. If I'm in need of a relaxing read at the end of a long day I know that I can't go wrong with a book by Aven Ellis. I absolutely love her new Washington DC Soaring Eagels series and I can't wait to read more about the amazing characters she undoubtedly will come up with.

This was a cute little book. I enjoyed how there were meaningful struggles and not just simple love at first sight book. We get a glance at how dyslexia can affect not only the person who has it but those around them. How there are many different learning disorders that go undiagnosed and lots of times those children are just identified as 'dumb' or 'lazy'. Well and we cannot forget about Brody, the pro baseball player that started with an iced coffee thrown at his crotch hahaha And Hayley, the career driven woman who doesn't want to date until her career is blooming, she's financially stable and wants an older man who is ready to settle down. Umm quite unfortunate that Brody is only two years older than she is and will turn her whole life plans in the blender.

THE WORST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ
If I could give it 0 stars I would. DNF but calling it read because I tried so hard and suffered so much.
-
There should be a huge trigger warning, because aside from the book being written like a 5 year old was in charge, the main character has a raging eating disorder and everyone encourages it.
Recovering from an ED myself makes this book so hard to get through, as she brushes all of her thinking off and continues to starve herself.
This book is so wrong and not okay.

This book is another Aven classic. I’m a baseball girl and while I love her hockey books, I’m so glad she decided to write a baseball series. The only thing that bummed me out was thinking that I will never meet my baseball player in a coffee shop! The characters had depth and I loved the relationships portrayed. I also enjoy getting to see a glimpse into the relationship the next book in the series follows! Squeeze Play is a home run!

Way too cutesy for me which was highly disappointing as I love a good baseball romance. I'll finish the series just because I committed to the first one but I have a feeling I will end up Christmas treeing them the way I did this one :(

This was super sweet and cute. I really liked the first half of the book, esp how the MC's first met. I also liked that the MC's had their own insecurities and issues and nothing ever got too angsty. In fact, I could totally relate to Hayley's need to get everything perfect. But man! The cheese-level towards the second half of the book became WAY too corny and sappy for me. So much so, that I was kinda cringing as I was reading the conversations between Hayley and Brody. The super sugariness of these two lovebirds is just not the kind of thing that gives me the feels. Other friends of mine though love that kind of stuff. *shrugs*

Over all, I liked this book and I will continue to buy the series. In fact, I can't wait to read Katie and AJ's story!

The story revolves around two people who meet and it's love at first sight. Their problems arise when each of them feels unworthy of the other. Brody is a professional baseball player which Hayley is a Georgetown graduate and works as a nonprofit organizer. Two different worlds but can love overcome the barriers? Good characters presented with down-to-earth feelings. The theme is "love conquers all".

Recent college graduate Hayley has found her dream job at a Washington, D.C. nonprofit. She has no plans to start dating, until she meets professional baseball player, Brody, who challenges her in the best ways. I didn't love this book, but I did think it was a cute read. Hayley was a bit of a mixed bag for me - I feel like she tried to portray this really mature demeanor, but she still seemed immature in a lot of ways. I appreciated that she wanted to better herself and her career, and she seemed to have a pretty solid plan of doing that. The relationship between Hayley and Brody was sweet with just a little bit of heat. I loved their banter and the way they challenged each other on what they wanted out of life. The support and honesty they showed each other was really inspiring. That said, the writing was a bit simplistic and repetitive. Their conversations often felt a bit unrealistic and too sugary sweet. What little drama there was was solved way too quickly and easily.

I really wanted to like this book but around halfway through, I started skimming the pages to get to the end.

Hayley is a 22-year-old girl living with her best friend in DC when she starts the job of her dreams. She wishes to improve herself via self help books and joining the gym. She does NOT want to date immature men which, to her, means men her age.
Cue meeting a hot man around her age.

Now, the beginning of the book had promise. I quite liked that she went for a man her age and he turned out to be more than she expected etc. I just hated how she seemed to think she was so mature but had that “Oh my gosh, I am just so random!” thing going for her. She was so naïve to the fact that not everyone is the same. Believing every person her age wanted to go to night clubs.
I also found the writing style annoying.

If I drank every time she went “Oooh!” I’d have been drunk by page 30.

I also didn’t like that she had to spell everything out. Things like “I held his hand to show how much I appreciate him” or something along those lines. I also didn’t like the arguments they had to create tension. They seemed very fake and done quickly just to add some heartbreak into it. The dialogue throughout felt unrealistic and I didn’t care for either character.

So yeah, first 20-30 pages were good and it just went downhill from there.

I've absolutely loved reading "Squeeze Play". Brody and Hayley are definitely some of my favourite Aven characters to date. Their witty, flirty dynamic is addictive and I fell in love with them right from the start. Although this book is unmistakably an Aven Ellis novel, something about it made it feel new and '"fresh". Aven Ellis' writing is strong and confident and it translates beautifully into these character's dialogue and personalities.
"Squeeze Play" is Aven Ellis' funniest novel yet, and might just be my favourite too! Fun, flirty, smart and original characters as always - a joy to read. I guarantee you'll fall in love with Brody and Hayley just like I have.

This was a cute story, but it had some flaws.
The rating is low because I really disliked the focus on food and how Hayley had to eat healthy because she was too large. She was a very insecure main character, and although no one is perfect, it was too much. It felt exhausting to read about her being extremely unhappy in her own skin as a size 10.

This was book #44 for Romanceopoly 2020/#7 for the sun challenge pack.

Square: The Bar
Challenge Pack: Sun
Challenge: Read a book set where you live or have lived - it can be city/town/state/country... be as specific as you like!

3.5 stars This challenge was a book set where you live... yeah, you can't get any more where you live than where your city/county was listed on page 1.

Hayley is a 22 year old recent Georgetown grad who is on her way to her first day at her first real, post-college job. While stopping for an iced coffee (which she does not like, but is determined to lose 10 pounds), she meets a handsome man who is totally listening in on her conversation... and she accidentally dumps her iced coffee on his crotch. Mortified, she gives him her email address to send her the dry cleaning receipt, which amuses him to no end. What she doesn't realize is that she just met the newest starting catcher for the Soaring Eagles, Brody Jensen. She doesn't realize that until her roommate forces her to watch a preseason game and realizes who the hot guy was... and soon they're emailing. And texting. And Facetiming. Neither of them was looking for a relationship, but when one literally dumps a coffee in your lap? Game on.

This was a super sweet story - if you're looking for lots of sexy times with heat, this is not the book for you. This would be an ideal story for someone who likes the fade-to-black romances or is new to the genre. I'm not a fan of those, but I don't hate them. That said, this was a story told by someone who knows the DC area - knows it enough to include one of my favorite early-20something dates: monument hopping at night and a nighttime walk amongst the cherry blossoms. One issue I had was that the book felt like it was leading up to some huge conflict - and when it came, it was something that could have been solved quickly by talking to each other... and WAS solved quickly when they actually spoke to each other. *sigh* At one point, I had to put this down and read some smut, which led into accidentally joining in on the Smutathon over the weekend, lol.

SQUEEZE PLAY was the exact book I needed to read at the exact moment. Whenever I read an Aven Ellis book, I feel that way, but then again, she’s one of my go-to happy authors. This is the first book in the WASHINGTON DC SOARING EAGLES series, all about HEAs and a baseball team. So you know what that means? Lots of talk about baseball butts 😍😂

I found such joy in this book because Hayley and Brody had such a fun yet real relationship. Ellis writes insta-love really well - I should know because I’m picky about it as it’s one of my least favorite tropes, yet I come back to her books repeatedly because they are my happy place. Although in this book, it happened slightly slower, and I liked that.

If you need a good chuckle, please read this book! I smile. I might laugh in my head. But when I laugh out loud, an author has written something funny. I lol so much during SQUEEZE PLAY. It was good for my soul. Hayley and Brody’s meet-cute was hilarious, and I loved every second. And Hayley’s next-door neighbors are goals in every way - I want to live next to them and be them when I’m old. Plus, they cracked me up in every scene they were in!

We all know I love an excellent disability rep, and this book has it! Haley works for a Dyslexia Foundation because her brother struggled with it, and she works hard to promote awareness of it. Brody has a particular type of anxiety that gets talked about.

One heads up:
Haley struggles with perfection and body issues. She body shames herself a lot in the book and is something she works on. She talks about clothing size, weight, and what’s she eating. She projects her issues on others while trying to cope. While this is a romance, this is a very real issue and can trigger people if they are working on their own problems.

I read this is a day. It made me happy. It was what I needed. I’ll return to it. If you need a smile, pick up SQUEEZE PLAY.

PS - You unexpectedly get the meet-cute of book two’s characters in this book, which is really fun!

Content Warnings: body shaming, eating disorder, anxiety

Subtly and grace are two things the fem MC lacked in her work life that drove me crazy. She was so ready to improve the company she worked for but when met with resistance, did she back up, re-evaluate her options and make a plan? Noo! She smashed through the resistance like the motherfucking Koolaid man, showing that if you’re right about something, all you have to do is force your ideas on others until they cave under the strain of your righteousness! Ask the “aggressive” feminists about how well this tactic works for them… Sometimes tact and decorum is necessary to initiate change. There are cases where shaking buildings until they fall down and people are forced to listen is necessary, but the fem MC’s situation was relatively low-stakes and she had just started working for the company. If you’re so filled with zeal that you have to fix all the rookie mistakes your dinosaur of a company is making within the first 5 seconds of working there, fine, but there are plenty of ways she could have warmed her boss up. Instead, she word vomited her half cooked ideas all over the woman on several occasions and got offended with the overwhelmed boss snapped at her. Well… The fem MC needed more time to feel her boss out so she could package her ideas in a way that would be more palatable to her. Not everyone enjoys catering to their boss like this and if applied to the fem MC, she could have quit and found another company that better fit her needs/aspirations and left the other company to drown in its mediocrity. The fact that the male MC encouraged her pushy and reckless behavior was insane to me.

I don’t remember many specifics about the romance, but I remember not being impressed.

“Our DC.” *throws up in mouth a little*

Though it’s definitely been a few weeks, and several books since I listened to this, I remember not being particularly impressed with it but not hating it, so we’ll roll with a “meh” 3 stars.

As an Avid fan of Aven’s writing and a lover of all things romance and sports I was so excited when she decided to move into the world of baseball and if there could be a triple homerun, she hit it with this one. It is by far my favorite baseball romance book ever.
This book was like my dream story from when I was growing up. Being from Michigan I am and will always be a Detroit Tigers fan. I grew up sharing a room with my sister, dreams of meeting that swoon worthy player (In my world it was Lance Parrish) who would sweep me off my feet and we’d live happily ever after. She more than fulfilled that dream for me.
From the moment they meet, Haley dumping coffee on Brody you can feel the attraction. Hayley has no clue who he is nor is she the least interested in sports but there is something about him that makes her take that chance with him. Brody, for me, just took one look at her and even though it seemed as if they were different on so many levels he pursues her and the rest…well the rest you will have to pick up a copy and read.
This book has humor, it is full of passion, there are obstacles that stand in their way. What I love is those obstacles are not insurmountable and suddenly solved in a page…they are dealt with in a real world way that leaves you with a story that could have happened to any one of us.

Aven does an awesome job of researching her characters as well as the location the story is set in. It makes you want to go there and visit all the places that Hayley and Brody went. And it makes you want to go to a baseball game, buy a hotdog and a coke and cheer on your favorite team .
This is an AWESOME start to this series. I have butterflies just thinking about their story and as I finish this, I am going to go and read it all over again. My only regret is that there are only five stars to give, because this book deserves so many many more.

*Book provided by the author in exchange for an honest review*

Ave Ellis is back with a new book! This one is rather special, because (for once) she stepped away from hockey and created a story around baseball.

This is obviously very exciting and I have to say I see baseball differently now, in a positive way.

The story follows Hayley Carter, who wants to start a career and finally found a great job. She is from DC and lives with her friend Katie.
Brody Jensen is a professional baseball player and new to his team. He is their catcher. Because of his job and full schedule, he has no time for a relationship.

The two of them meet at a coffee shop and the start of their relationship couldn’t be more embarrassing for Hayley. For us readers it’s funny and a great start. I loved who their relationship developed after that, maybe a bit fast, but still in a very beautiful way and Aven Ellis captured it beautifully.

Both of them are very passionate and I really enjoyed their journey, helping each other to change things and fight for what they want. Their chemistry is so sweet and full of sparks.

Like Hayley I didn’t know anything about baseball, but this book helped me understand it a lot more.

Hayley and Brody’s relationship is the centre of this story, but job, friends and family play an important role too. Katie is a fabulous character too and I think her and AJ (Brody’s teammate) would make a great couple.
For me the excitement, conflict and drama had little space in this book, which is a bit of a shame. I think a book needs these and they put the story on another level. The storyline has a wonderful flow and is full of romantic moments.

The characters are very well lined out and have a great depth. We get to know them properly and get really close to them.
There is also a new location in this story: Washington DC. The setting is beautiful and Aven Ellis really knows who to create a unique setting and atmosphere in a story.

This story makes me have butterflies and full all fuzzy inside. A perfect romance!!!

I'm a huge fan of Aven Ellis and every single book of hers and have read them all multiple times, but I have to say this is my all time favorite. I couldn't stop laughing out loud with the scenes she set up and the witty remarks. We all have those friends in our lives that make us say the most inappropriate comments at the wrong times well welcome to Hayley and of course the hot guy she had just seen heard the entire conversation. So of course she was embarrassed who wouldn't be ?! But what happens when that hot guy turns into so much more was it completely worth it? Hayley is starting a new chapter in her life and of course we all know how scary and overwhelming that can be so of course she's a little scared about starting something new right now. Here walks in the sexy and tough Brody (who I might add is the man every girls dreams of !) he knows what he wants and he won't stop showering romance all over Hayley and letting her know her weird love of cereal, oreos, and small appliances is just fine with him. In fact he will embrace it and make sure all dates surround exactly those. Yes you may swoon now!
