Alternate cover edition of ASIN B07PDKQ9JJ

It’s said no man is an island. But writer Parish Adams is out to prove them wrong. Broken and unable to bear the violent death of his child, he’s isolated himself on a private beach in Maine. He finds no comfort in the warmth of relationships. For Parish, the cold Atlantic Ocean is company enough.

Scarlett Lyon’s life has taken a dramatic turn. Single and independent, living in Montana, nothing was tying her down. Then her sister’s fatal accident changes everything. She finds herself guardian for her nephew Sam. Now she must relocate to Martin’s Beach. And more jarring than that, become a mother figure.

I could not get enough of this story and found that I would read it whenever I had the chance. Even if it was eating dinner or jogging on the treadmill, I did not put my kindle down because I needed to know what was going to happen in the story. This was an incredible beautiful and heartbreaking story that really explored the grief that individuals experience while finding comfort with each other. The writer did an incredible job with this story as it really resonated with me. The emotions really flowed through the words throughout the story creating an emotional read.

Scarlett was an incredible strong character that experienced a great lost but it showed how strong she was when she took on the responsibility of her nephew. I really loved the way that she was there for Parish and didn't push Parish when things got too hard for him. I found that was incredible caring and patient in regards to her nephew despite being thrown into uncharted territory.

Parish my heart complete broke throughout the story over the lost that he experience and the pain he constantly carries around with him each day. I found that despite the pain he carries around with him, he is still there for Scarlett and her nephew during their grief and help them through some vital times in their life. I really loved Parish and found he was perfect for this story,

Leslie Pike has written this tory beautifully and really ribbons the feelings with this story. I loved the characters and the way that they interact with each other. I honestly could not get enough of this story and found myself thinking about these characters well after i finished reading the story. I definitely recommend this story.

5* Grieving Stars

I was lucky enough to win a copy of The Beach in Winter and I am so happy that I did because I have been introduced to a new Author and I really enjoyed her writing style and story telling.

This book was full of feels. It is a story of deep loss, heartbreak and finding love when you least expect it.

From the moment you start reading you are submerged into the tragic circumstances and grief that surround Parish, Scarlett and Sam. All the characters in the book are so likeable and realistic and you will fall in love with them quickly. I enjoyed reading how together they learn to heal each other and how love blossoms.

I highly recommend this emotionally charged story. The cover of the book is also beautiful.

The Beach in Winter by Leslie Pike brought out emotions that were within me, lost through time, yet brought to the surface as I turned the pages. I was reminded of the deep, black, darkness before dawn. As daylight appears, light begins to filter through and life begins again.
Reading of three people with different tragedies in life lost in their own darkness, I was drawn to the characters and the understanding how each one handled their loss so differently, finding the ability to love again, reminding me once again it is always darkest before dawn.

I feel like this review should be alternately titled: True Confessions - don't judge a book by the first 2 chapters.
Those who love to talk books and follow me here, know one thing: Karen doesn't do angst.
Unless you are Claudia Burgoa and I allow her to get away with that nonsense.

The next part of 'forgive me book world for I have sinned' is that I picked up and started this book over not once, not twice but too many to remember. I mean this book - is sad. Not a little sad. I mean full on, this is so sad, oh my god this is so so sad.

Then something happens.

A spark.

A glimmer that yes, this will be a book I will long remember after I am done reading. And yes reader friends, like me you need to be in the right frame of mind for this beautifully told 'friends-to-lovers' tale. Although it starts out with pulverizing the organ in your chest, it has wonderful moments of laughter and banter, sexy smoldering times that make up for the loss you endure watching these characters adapt to. No one ever recovers from grief < that is one of the takeaways from the story. It's how you let grief move you onto the next chapter in the lives of those left behind.

Parish was an amazing hero. Ms. Pike really gave a multifaceted look at his story arc. At times you wanted to smack him and at others protect his heart. Scarlett was 'every woman'. She's the one trying to keep everything and everyone together. And who is looking after her? My heart equally hurt for Sam. He approaches wanting to be independent but held back by his grief. I am still not sure who needed the other more: Parish or Sam. Having to the privilege to read their story add so much to 'just a romance.'

This is a standalone you want to read when you are ready. And trust me. You want to take the time to read their story.

My heart needed this book right now.
Parish has been dealing with the worst grief imaginable for 5 years and is spiraling. Sam and Scarlet are a aunt/nephew pair living next door and dealing with their own heartache.
It was a joy to watch Parish, Scarlet, and Sam interact with each other. The gradual formation of friendships then more showed how giving someone purpose can help beat back demons.
Well written and compelling, Ms Pike did a wonderful job of capturing an array of complex emotions. She takes the characters on a journey that the three of them are uniquely qualified to help each other with.
All of the primary characters are likable and relatable. I found myself rooting for them while also understanding their ups and downs. The small secondary cast is centered on Scarlet’s family - her brothers are definitely people I’d like to know better.

This is a story about loss, about friendship, and about the kind of love that takes time to cultivate and grow from companionship.
Parish has been suffering the loss of his child for too long, wanting nothing more than to go himself, in come Sam and Scarlett into his life to turn it upside down…or is it right side up? Sam has lost his parents, Scarlett lost her sister and brother-in-law and is now the guardian of her nephew Sam.

These three souls are suffering yet find the way to connect and bring out the best in each other. I loved seeing the friendship that formed between Sam and Parish. He became somewhat of a friend/father figure for Sam and that helped both come out of their solitude. Scarlett and Parish’s relationship started off slowly but then quickly turned into something more.

I loved the secondary characters as well. Scarlett’s brothers and parents were hilarious and the scenes with them were always a nice reprieve from the sadness enveloping Sam, Scarlett, and Parish.

Leslie did a fantastic job with this story. Bringing the reader into the lives of these characters and sharing their grief and their happy moments. The story was well written and the characters were developed nicely.

This book is a bit of a tear jerker! But a must read! Parish and Scarlett meet under tough circumstances. Scarlett has just lost her sister and brother in law, and has custody of her nephew Sam. Moving to Maine to keep him in the family’s home is where she meets Parish, who is hiding from the world after his own devastating loss. Scarlet being her usual self tries to forge a friendship since they are neighbors. That friendship begins to bring healing to one another as well as Sam as they spend time together. A beautiful relationship forms between them and an amazing bond between Sam and Parish. Their relationship is tested many times, but each time they work through it, until one suspenseful afternoon on the beach. Love ultimately wins for these two. Great characters and a very captivating story!

….. Audiobook Review…….. ❤️ Oh my heart! It has been a very long time that a book has effected me like this emotionally. This is a story of three deeply wounded hearts, and how they all help each other cope with unbelievable loss. The anguish, the utter despair, debilitating pain of the loss of a loved one. Also, a wonderful and believable story of two passionate souls (Kindred Spirits) destined to be together, healing each other. This delivers all the feels!
Parish Adams, a writer, who lost his young son tragically years ago is a damaged and broken soul who’s become a recluse on a private beach in Maine. He does not engage in conversations with locals, and he drinks himself into a stupor every night on the sandy, cold beach outside his home trying to forget and numb the all consuming pain he feels every second of every day of loosing his child. This all changes when he notices his neighbors. He recognizes the teen boy, but not the beautiful young woman. Turns out, it is the Sister of his neighbor who recently died along with her husband. Leaving their 13 year old son, Sam, in her charge. Scarlett Lyon never thought she would be a mother, has no idea on where to start with it. She’s trying to heal with the loss of her sister. Her family, her parents and her siblings are all very close.
The first few chapters where we get to know our characters, how they meet, interact with each other really broke my heart! Leslie is such a wonderfully detailed writer! I could feel all the grief, pain, conflict, desperation deep in my heart. She’s just magnificent in all the small details that create an amazing story I can visualize…
I loved the instant connection, the immediate sexual chemistry between Parish and Scarlett. She brought him out of his shell, a playful side to him. I also enjoyed laughs throughout this book too, which was much needed. It was so endearing to see the development of Parish’s and Sam’s friendship and ultimately bonding over each having such deep losses. It’s a bond they both need to help each other heal. Parish helps Scarlett navigate parenthood, and starts really falling for her. The love that they start feeling for each other is slow, organic. And WOW…. the sexy times were so steamy and deliciously intense! It was just so heartwarming to see how all 3 of them were there for each other and started to heal together and find love.
Narration duo, Maxine Mitchell and Joe Arden do what they do best to me…. Rip my damn heart out, stomp on it, then put it back again whole and full. They were both absolute PERFECTION in their performances! 💋 Maxine blew me away with her phenomenal performance of Scarlett. I could feel the deep, deep pain of her loosing her sister, having to deal with a teen boy (I can personally relate to that one), her conflicting emotions in her inner dialogue was so believable! She also brought great sass, stubborn, sarcastic to this well rounded character. Wow… the emotional rollercoaster of her relationship with Parish, I’m just so impressed! Gahhhh…. Joe really made my heart hurt with all his emotions he put into Parish’s character. With all the unbelievable grief and loss, had me reeling with heartache. As the story progressed, he really impressed me how he was always able to “bring me along” on Parish’s emotional journey. Arden…. this was next level! Fantastic.
What a phenomenal story of grief, mourning, and ultimately healing of 3 lost souls. They all found strength and love together, but it was quite a long journey for them to get there.

This story had some heart breaking moments in it but I absolutely loved this book. Leslie always writes the perfect stories. Parish rubbed me the wrong way in the beginning but after hearing why he was the way he was I totally understood him and by the end of the book I really liked his character. He overcame a lot. I loved Sam's character, he had some funny and heart breaking moments too. And poor Scarlett and her cooking and her just trying to figure out her new life. Overall I great read!

DNF. I had a few problems here. First how on earth would Parish still be hot and in shape after 5 years of heavy drinking, smoking and general neglect to himself! I would think he would lose his muscle tone. And Scarlett kept giggling. That annoyed me. It felt juvenile for a 35 year old woman. Just not enough to keep my attention.

When the opportunity presented itself to sign up for a Leslie Pike arc I just clicked without knowing anything about the upcoming book. I didn't need a blurb to know that whatever story Leslie decided to tell it's going to be well written with well crafted believable characters. And she did just that. Delivered a great story.

The Beach in Winter was a bittersweet story.
Bitter because it was about great losses, deep pain, some guilt and a lot of loneliness. About feeling weak and lost and angry.
But it was also sweet because it was about finding meaningful friendships, to find the courage to face your own demons and cope anyway, to find your strenght amidst great challenges.
Sweet because it says love makes everything possible. It heals you whatever great your loss is. All you have to do is let love in and it will do its magic. Of course it's easier said than done.

What I liked most about this book was it showed all the steps and trips, the ups and downs three different people took to find the courage to let love in and heal their souls.

I loved the writing and all the characters. There was this unique understanding between them derived from the losses they suffered. I liked this kind of slow burn passion between Scarlett and Parish - Great name by the way!
All in all it was a very good read.

This book will bring on the tears. 😭
Parish is a writer who has experienced loss like most people can not comprehend. After Parish’s tragedy he moves to the opposite side of the country and hides from everyone he knows and loves.
After 5 years he meets Scarlett. Who becomes “Sam Boy’s” guardian after their own families loss.
Scarlett has no clue how to raise a child, much less a angry, emotional teenage boy. Some how Parish, Scarlett and Sam form a bond and learn to heal each other.
I was so shocked by the emotional roller coaster this book took me on. This is unlike anything Leslie has ever written. The Beach in Winter is a tragically beautifully love story. It has all the feels. Must read!!!

The Beach in Winter by Leslie Pike is the story of Parish Adams and Scarlett Lyon.
Parish lost his son and with it his heart. Now choosing to pretty much leave a isolated life to deal with his pain. Scarlett has just lost her sister and brother in law but gain their child. With this new step into motherhood to raise her nephew has taken her to leave in their town to keep him close to what he knows. There she meets Parish a neighbor and they slowly form a friendship which of course leads to more. This was a heartstrings tugging story but I really enjoyed it.

I read this book without ever reading a synopsis, so I had no idea what I was getting into when I started it. I'm a big fan of Leslie Pike, and when there was an opportunity to get an ARC for her new book, I signed up, no questions asked.

This book is about three people with broken hearts that are trying to find a way through their grief. Scarlett and her nephew are recovering from the sudden loss of her sister and brother-in-law, her nephew's parents. Parish is years into the tragic loss of his son, and he's having a hard time functioning on any level. They find themselves neighbors on a Maine beach, and slowly they start to heal, find love, and move forward with their lives.

I won't say any more about the plot than that. It's a story that starts off sad, so be prepared for the first two chapters to be a little weepy, but you have to understand what kind of mental state Parish is in going into the book. It's such a good read; fans of Leslie will not be disappointed.

Fantastic story! An inspirational blend of loss and love - brilliantly woven together in one remarkable read!

Leslie Pike has a gift for evoking ALL THE FEELS with her beautifully articulated words and perfectly detailed stories. Her talent is endless. Creativity and attention to specifics are EVERYTHING and this magnificent story will leave you wrung out and in absolute awe.

Parish & Sam strike up a friendship. Parish able to offer Sam a man's perspective and advice. Sam able to offer Parish a teenager's point of view. They develop a bond that is just what the other needs. There for each other in a way no one else is. It's so relatable and genuine - love this aspect of their story.

Scarlett & Parish have this fantastically simmering chemistry (whistles) that is so unexpected. Absolutely BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN and gives this otherwise sad time in both of their lives a real heart warming, hopeful VIBE. A much needed reprieve from the tragedies they've navigated. Giving them both the will to move on and find more than what life has dealt them so far.

These characters are unique and expertly written. Parish, Scarlett and Sam have all suffered soul crushing loss. They've all found themselves holed up on the same beach nursing their broken hearts. The bond and friendship they find is filled with wit, compassion and the strength they can lend to one another. Despite their feelings of uncertainty or sheer inexperience - they each have something to offer. The journey all three embark on is one of healing and charting a new path in life. Letting go of what was and embracing what is. Finding love and a new sense of family when hope had been lost. Through the inevitable ups and downs of the story, I found myself rooting for these three! You will too!

Parish Adams is a man living a sad and lonely existence. He’s just drifting and letting pain take a prominent place in his every day way of life. Scarlett Lyon is like a fish out of water. She’s never been in that type of situation before and doesn’t know what to do. We have a third main character and his name is Sam. He had me rubbing my heart – it hurt for him. As the story goes on you’ll come to realize how important he is.

What seems like a heavy subject, our author has the time to sneak in some chuckle moments. It was a great way to lighten the mood. At one time Scarlett had me wondering if I should keep a cold bottle of water handy. The tide turns and things change but it all feels so natural. The author eased into it, which makes this story seem so realistic.

I loved what was going on and then she stops me in my tracks. Our reality sneaks in and will have you think about how quickly things in our lives can change. Sometimes we may go back a step or two – sometimes it’s easier to fall back than to soldier on. So if you’re dealing with some recent agony, this may be a tough read.

It was interesting to watch how the author created her story. It’s a great vehicle for her creativity and we get the rewards. She also knew exactly what was needed in order to get our own emotions involved – never mind her characters. This includes the ending because you may have a smile on your face but there may be a couple of tears close at hand as well. My dilemma will be in seeing how Ms. Pike is going to top this one when the next book comes out.

I was not compensated nor was I required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

The Beach In Winter is a phenomenal story of grief, mourning and healing. Neighbors Parrish, Scarlett and her teenage nephew Sam are all grieving incredible losses when their paths cross in a small Maine beach town one fall. Over the course of that winter, all of their lives are forever changed as they strike up tentative friendships that become everlasting bonds.

Parrish is drowning in his grief five years after his son’s brutal death. A total recluse, he spends his days drinking and smoking when he’s not writing his detective series. He doesn’t even know that his next-door neighbors have died until a forced interaction with their son’s aunt, who is now Sam’s guardian. Little by little, Scarlett and Sam being Parrish out of the black hole he’s been existing in. And along they way, he helps her navigate parenthood and helps Sam grieve his parents.

There are so many sweet moments between Sam and Parrish. He expertly walks the fine line of being a friend and mentor with the young boy. And Sam brings out the paternal feelings in Parrish that he long ago buried. The romance between Parrish and Scarlett is equally sweet. It develops organically from a mutual attraction to something so much deeper.

On that beach one winter, three lost souls come together, healing one another, showing one another a way out of the darkened, and letting each other know that it’s okay to sometimes just talk to the waves when you don’t want to talk to people. The waves always listen.

Wow this was such a wonderful story of the power of love, the depths of loss, and the strength of friendship. This story follows three characters that have experienced unthinkable losses and are all coping and trying to navigate through their new normal in their own way. Ultimately they find strength and comfort in each other through love and friendship.

Parish our hero is such a broken soul when we meet him but quickly becomes a mentor and friend to Sam (the heroines nephew) and their bond is absolutely amazing to watch develop, and extremely important for each of them to climb out of their shells. He's also got that broody swoony thing happening and his relationship with Scarlett is so dang sweet. I really loved Parish.

Scarlett our heroine was such a great and fun character, she was uprooted and given this huge responsibility all while also mourning her loss. Seeing her push through, sacrifice, and then find her happiness was so wonderful and I really enjoyed her development.

Sam is the nephew of Scarlett but plays a key role in the story- I really enjoyed his teenage attitude and snarky remarks. It was good to see him open up and come out of his shell with both Parish and Scarlett

I honestly also loved the scenes with Scarletts whole family as well, they were so fun and brought good humor to the story.

Absolutely loved this book! It definitely hit me in the feels hard in the beginning breaking my heart but then it was ultimately put back together much like these characters.

Beach In Winter sucked us in from the start. Leslie Pike made us care about the characters right away. It didn't take much time to get invested in their stories, and wow, they've all had a rough road. Parish is consumed by grief, barely existing, when Scarlett and Sam enter his life. They've been through their own tragedy too, and the story takes us on all three of their journeys as the stumble their way to a place of healing.
The connection between Parish and Scarlett is immediate and intense. Parish is sensitive, yet strong and sexy. He's got that bit of alpha that we like without being afraid of his feelings. And Scarlett is no wilting flower. She has to change her way of thinking as she adapts to the new role life has thrown at her. Neither of them are perfect, but they are so real, it's easy to connect with them.
Emotional, raw, and heartwarming. These three will capture you and you'll be thinking about them long after you've finished their story.

Another Excellently executed book by Leslie Pike, just make sure you have your tissues ready.
I was so moved by this emotional compelling story of Heartbreak, grief, loss, friendship and Love. Three people engulfed in their grief, a beach bringing them together, finding a way to help each other heal from the emptiness that loss has left them with.
A beautifully crafted piece of writing, with realistic and relatable character's that will have you feeling so deeply for them. Like the waves on the ocean you will become swept away by Parish, Scarlett and Sam's journey though the tragedy of loss, the darkness of grief and the hope that even after heartbreak so painful, you can learn to Love Again.
A brilliant book.
Loved it and highly recommend it.

Soul touching

The Beach in Winter will have you going through so many Kleenex.

Scarlett never seen the drastic change of her life coming. She’s lost her sister and brother in law, and now has to take care of her nephew.

Parish has never gotten over the lose of his son. And for him cutting out the world is what he does to just get through life.

Leslie Pike touches your heart and soul with this amazing book. You’ll cry, laugh, and find hope with this book. I fell in love how they were friends first just trying to help each other, but as time goes on feelings develop into way more.

Disclaimer please make sure you have Kleenex for this book.

The Beach in Winter is a tragic and beautiful love story. It is a story that explores the grief that individuals experience whilst finding comfort with each other. Leslie Pike has done an incredible job with this story. The emotions poured through the pages throughout the story creating an touching and poignant read.

This book was very well written and compelling. How Leslie captured the vast array of complex emotions was fantastic. She takes each of the characters on an emotional journey and there was this unique bond and understanding between them that centred from the losses they had suffered. Great characters and a story that grabs you from the start.

An emotional roller-coaster that cannot be put down. This book steamrolled my emotions and brought on all of the tears.

Parish, Scarlett and Sam have all experienced great loss and are trying to figure out how to navigate their changed lives. They are able to help each other through these obstacles and form bonds that are everlasting. The character development is beautifully written and entwined with an eloquent story-line.

The Beach in Winter is a heartbreaking yet beautiful story of loss and healing. The main characters were all going through some really devastating stuff. I loved how they all evolved and bloomed throughout the story, healing each other together before they even realised it was happening. I couldn't help but love all 3 of them right from the start. I couldn't put this book down, reading it in basically 1 sitting. I didn't want to put it down.
This was my first book by Leslie Pike, and it was a fabulous introduction to her work. I look forward to more!

This is the second book in the Lyon Family series. Book 1, A Love for All Seasons is a prequel short story about how the Lyon parents met. You could easily enjoy this without it, but that’s a fun listen if you have a chance.

Pike put me through the wringer with all the feelings in this book. And I loved every minute of it. Grab the tissues fellow listeners, you’re going to need them.

Parish is grieving the loss of his son and Scarlett is new guardian to her 13yo nephew after the loss of his parents. Pike weaves a budding romance through the healing process that all three of these precious souls are going through. The poignant mix of grief, anger, happiness, love, and finding a “new normal” is wonderfully crafted here.

I like that they each have individual relationships - Scarlett & Parish, Scarlett & Sam, and Sam & Parish. Pike gives them all experiences so that they all get to know each other and I adored getting to know them too. I was thrilled with the way she wrapped things up and gave them the perfect epilogue.

I’m looking forward to Nobel’s book, A River in Spring.

Narration:
Maxine Mitchell and Joe Arden are an absolute dream team and they elevated an already fantastic book to another level. It’s an art to bring all the emotions of this writing to life without overdoing it and they were perfection here.

While I already owned the ebook, I did receive a copy of the audio from Home Cooked Books and am leaving an honest review.

After Scarlett Lyon’s life is turned upside down by the sudden accident of her sister, she now must take on a life she wasn’t prepared for. She finds herself relocating to Martin’s Beach and becoming the legal guardian for her nephew. There she meets writer Parish Adams, who is grieving his son and fighting his own inner demons, whilst hiding from the world.

Let me start by saying, I did not read the synopsis for this book. And so, I did not know what the book was going to be about going in. I was pleasantly surprised though. This book was so heart-breaking, yet beautiful.

I just loved the friendship between Parish and Scarlett’s nephew Sam. I was great to see all the characters interact with each other and slowly get closer to becoming a new-found family.

I did roll my eyes a little bit at how hot Parish is still supposed to be. I mean after 5 years of heavy drinking and smoking, and just generally not taking care of himself, it is not believable that he would still be in shape and still have muscles. I mean we didn’t even see him exercise until way after they met. A bit of a nit-picky thing, but it did throw me off a little bit. Also, I know therapy is not accessible to everyone. But there were times in the story where I kept thinking, why are these characters not even considering getting a little therapy. I think it would have greatly helped the story feel a bit more well-rounded. That also took me out of the story a little bit.

Regardless, overall, this book was great. Well written, and I loved reading about the journeys the characters went on. It felt real and believable how the story progressed.

Narrated by Joe Arden and Maxine Mitchell, they were fantastic with the narration. The story and characters feel real and were really brought the characters to life. Thoroughly enjoyed my listening experience!

I was provided a free audio copy of this book. However, all opinions shared are my honest thoughts about this book.

The Beach in Winter really has me torn. The premise held so much potential, but in my opinion, it fell flat.
The story itself was good, but I just wasn't connecting to it. Parrish is a reclusive writer, who was essentially hiding from the tragic memories of the past, self medicating with booze to drown out the pain. While Scarlett is reeling from the untimely death of her sister and brother in law, and adjusting to her new role as guardian of her young nephew.  They help each other heal, by learning to find strength in each other.
I usually live for these highly emotional stories. But this one just didn't do it for me. I found a lot of the dialogue really juvenile, and it brought me out of the story a lot of the time. It seemed like for so much of the book, the only thing Parrish and Scarlett talked about was sex. There wasn't any substance in the relationship. Parrish was like a horny teenager instead of a forty something year old man. I just wasn't buying it.
The bright light in the book was Sam. The kid stole the show. He was trying to come to terms with losing his parents, and his actions and feelings in the book were very real. I loved the way he was written. I remember being a kid that age after losing my dad, and acting and feeling the same way.
Overall, The Beach in Winter falls in the like but not love column for me. I just wanted more from it.
