Then all evul, and all memory of evil acts committed, disappers. Only the children know of the ceremonies that take place on moonlit nights and in the canves that lie undneath th town's foundations.... "Remarkable.... a novel of horror that exceeds the word 'intense.' It's as if the layers of horror are being peeled away as you turn the pages." --J.N. Williamson

Maybe not the worst horror story I’ve read, but it comes pretty close. I really could have done without the explicit torture. He especially seemed to have a thing about torturing animals, though the main character goes through so much I don’t really see how he could have survived. I had to skim a lot of that.

All that is too bad, because the premise showed promise. But much of it went unexplained, so the reader is left with some basic questions unanswered. Plus, the characters, the children especially, were pretty two dimensional.

I’ve read other books by this author and enjoyed them. So maybe this being his first novel has something to do with it not being up to par. Fortunately, it's a fast read.

Not a bad story -- a bit Children of the Corn-y -- except for the too-neat ending, but so very annoying to read. Apparently, this was the author's first novel, so maybe it was inexperience, but I deeply disliked how explicitly he described some of his ideas early on instead of allowing there to be some mystery. Characters also seemed to grasp some very obscure concepts way too easily, especially the young child Jimmy.

Started out well but then it went downhill. Still managed to finish it. Barely. Lots of flashbacks that dragged the plot. It also had a lot of torture. Animal and human. Those were a little tough to get through. On the plus side, it was written well.

I hate giving books that I read as a young teen 3 stars but for the most part I can't remember what they are about. :(
