This book is a nice resource for beginning free-motion quilters. I have been watching Angela Walters's videos on YouTube for a while now, and this book is a solid companion to that. I think that the book will be most effective with the videos attached--I think some of the meanders make more sense with actually watching the quilting happen. On the other hand, I did like that this was more detailed than some of the videos and Walters takes the time to show variations/spell everything out. While it was nice to have an entire book focused on meandering, I have enjoyed her other resources that discuss several different free-motion techniques including meandering. I would still recommend this title, but it isn't my favorite.
For: beginner free-motion machine quilters; quilters wanting a companion guide.
Red flags: some readers may find this repetitive to other like works.
Step by step directions are clearly described and illustrated. Each organic pattern described includes tips for how to make the overall pattern appear perfect even if it isn't. I especially appreciated those! Her moments to congratulate yourself on progress also kept me encouraged. I've never quilted mostly because I've never been attracted to repetitive geometrics, but now I think even I can make a gorgeous quilt that I'll have fun making and looking at. I'd recommend this book to anyone that is even slightly interested in quilting, it's fun to read and quite inspiring!
I have been enjoying Angela Walters clear, short instructional videos on free-motion quilting. In this book she does the impossible: improve on her videos by providing extremely detailed instructions and diagrams, as well as q and a sections which anticipate some of the challenges that free-motioners may encounter and heads them off at the pass. Destined to be a classic as it adds important details to Christina Cameli’s books.
I love watch Angela Walters videos so when I saw this book on Kindle Unlimited I checked it out. I am trying to be more relaxed when I quilt. Her step by step installments on building on the simple meander gave me confidence and I've implemented some steps in my quilting. I think I will be conquering the simple feather stitch soon and maybe from there I can move on to a real feather stitch, which has been my goal since I started quilting on my domestic machine.
I have watched many of Angela's YouTube videos. This book is just like the videos, easy to understand with attractive results. I will definitely use her methods. I also intend to read more of her writing and see where it can take my machine quilting! Highly recommended!
Very nice, easy read. I read it in one day, I wish I had read a chapter, then practiced, then read another chapter. I enjoyed her sense of humor and hopefully I can be as nice to myself as she is! I had a kindle version. I wish I had a hard copy to copy the quilt examples to put on the wall as examples.
Borrowed on Amazon Prime, and liked it enough that I'll buy it. Walters has a clear, step-by-step instructional writing style, and takes the reader from the most basic meandering style through increasingly more detailed patterns. Practical tips accompany each lesson, along with repeated assurances that some imperfection will never be noticed on a finished piece. Excellent advice throughout.
This is a great reference and the step by step made it easy for me to try drawing for designs myself as I read. Angela doesn't overly complicate it either. Highly recommend it for those needed some inspiration and direction when beginning free motion quilting.
A very good reference for a person wanting to learn free motion quilting. She writes like she speaks on her videos. She breaks down the process so clearly. Thank you Angela!!
I like how this book teaches a new skill one step at a time. I felt encouraged to master a skill before adding the next element and the results were worth the practice and effort!
I love Angela Walters quilting and use many of her ideas. She explains and Illustrates them very well. I often look to her for ideas on how to finish my quilts.
All of Angela Walters books are wonderful and this one is no exception. She breaks down the steps to make it so much easier to understand. Highly recommend.
The descriptions are clear and concise. The designs are simple but striking. Each is drawn out clearly. I can't wait to get to my machine and try them out.
