I'm between 3.5 and 4 stars, closer to 4, so I'll round up.

It's hard to live in the Washington, DC area for as long as I have without becoming at least a little bit of a political junkie. And while our current political climate has me interchangeably ranting, raving, and lamenting, I'm still fascinated by (most) political figures, how parties pick their candidates, and the march toward the election. (Especially the good old days, when we didn't have to think about Russian collusion, cough, cough.)

That's why I jumped at the chance to read Wayne Avrashow's first novel, Roll the Dice . Avrashow, an attorney, is a former campaign manager in Los Angeles politics and was a government commissioner, so he knows of what he speaks. (Although I don't really want to know how much of the inspiration for this book came from real-life events, lol!)

Tyler Sloan is one of the country's biggest rock stars. He's won Grammys, filled stadiums, even been nominated for an Oscar. He has fans all over the world, and he's had more than his share of beautiful women over the years. Politics is in his blood—his father, a former governor, narrowly lost the Democratic nomination for president. But it's still a surprise to nearly everyone when he decides to run as an independent candidate for an open U.S. Senate seat in his home state of Nevada.

Can a celebrity with no political experience be taken seriously as a political candidate? Should they? (No comment.) Sloan's Democratic and Republican challengers quickly dismiss him as a neophyte, a lightweight. They hint about scandals in Sloan's past—sex, drugs, even blasphemy—each of which calls his character into question. But Sloan didn't just wake up suddenly and decide to get into politics. He's given a great deal of thought to his positions (and in fact wants to share his views on every issue far more than his campaign staff wants him to), and he has answers to every accusation that his opponents can throw at him.

Sloan quickly realizes, however, that his celebrity has its limits. Every single event from his past, everything he said and did, even the lyrics of his songs are analyzed ad infinitum by political commentators, reporters looking for a fresh story, and his opponents. He wants to campaign on the issues, but he quickly learns the way the political system works. He doesn't want to stoop to pettiness, but it seems as if every time he turns around he has to justify something from his past, or try to prove to a skeptic that he's more than just a celebrity seeking an ego boost.

His campaign is an uphill battle, and he doesn't have much time. He'll need to deal with scandals among his staff and questions about difficult times in his past, and he'll need to weather his often-strained relationship with his father, whose support he'll need. Will he be able to prove his worth as a potential senator, or will he become a gimmick, a cocktail party trick? Will he be able to handle what comes his way, or will he ultimately fold under the pressure? And is there a secret in his past that will keep him from a possible victory?

Although it may be a little predictable at times, Roll the Dice is a tremendously compelling read. While its examination of the politics of celebrity may perhaps hit a little too close to home given our current environment, Sloan definitely seems to be a candidate who has more to offer than charm, fame, and sex appeal. I definitely couldn't stop reading this, because I wanted to see what obstacles Avrashow would throw in Sloan's way, and just how he would tie everything up.

I feel like this book would make an interesting movie or television mini-series—it just has the right amount of intrigue and drama, as well as emotion and personal interaction, plus the fascinating madness of politics. Avrashow definitely knows his way around a campaign and it shows, and truth be told, this would have been a pretty intriguing election to watch!!

I give this book 5 out of 5 Political Thriller Stars! I really enjoyed this book and with it being told from an author with experience in politics mad it that much better! I usually don’t read political thrillers but love all fiction and was definitely intrigued by the thought of a rock star going into politics and I wasn’t let down. The characters were enjoyable and well written. The plot was also solid and 5 star worthy! This book had me flipping pages through the night and was full of scandals and corruption.

I will definitely be checking out the author’s future works and more of this genre! Dani-approved and highly recommended!

ROLL THE DICE by Wayne Avrashow is a political novel that is entertaining and intriguing. A fictional story of an aging rock star who throws himself into the knockdown, drag-out political race for a U.S. Senate seat from Nevada.

Tyler Sloan is a rock and roll celebrity who has decided to run for office. He has led a rock and roll life full of sex, drugs, rehab and privilege, but he has also matured and runs a multi-million dollar fund. He is no stranger to politics. His father was the governor of California and just barely lost in his bid for President of the United States.

Tyler funds his campaign himself and will only accept the help of small, personal contributions. He refuses the campaign contributions of special interest groups and lobbyists. He runs as an independent and campaigns outside of the two major political machines. As past indiscretions come back to haunt him and his campaign, new intrigues can also threaten his run for office.

This was a great look behind the scenes of a major political campaign. Even written as a fictional account of a campaign, you get the feeling that all of these situations could happen today in real life. Tyler was a believable main character, strengths and flaws included, with secondary characters that were perfectly placed. This is a great fictional read for a political junkie like me, but it is advertised as a thriller. Not so much. A fast paced read, campaign and some political intrigue behind the scenes, but not what I would personally call a thriller.

Thanks very much to Fiery Seas and Net Galley for allowing me to read this eARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book marries politics and celebrity stardom in an interesting story that shows the background of our political leaders, using every bit of sex, coarse words or humiliation they can find to pull themselves to the top of the polls! What happens when a beloved singer from our much younger years, decides to finally follow his father into the political picture? Do we just want to touch him and hear him sing, with phone photos for that 'girl' from the past, or do we have the ability to join his campaign while realizing he does want what is best for Nevada, for our families and future?
The author introduces us to some great characters, with lots of background and a few people new to the scene. Sometimes this book read a little slow, I wasn't compelled to stay awake at night to read it,but parts were very good, of which I was intrigued and kept reading!
A moderately enjoyable story, with characters I did like. I would like to read a follow-up story continuing this story-line but flowing more smoothly together.
I thank the author, Wayne Avrashow, Netgalley and the publisher Fiery
Seas for the ARC of this story from which I give my review.

This book was definitely a bit out of my comfort zone. I’m not really a huge reader of political thrillers, but after being sent information on it, I was intrigued. I thought it sounded unique and interesting. After reading it, I could tell that it was very well researched and written. I liked the fact that I don’t know much about politics, but never felt lost or confused. It was like everything was explained very easily to understand. I also enjoyed how each chapter was dated. It gave me a clear time line to when all of the major events of the election were taking place. It was great that I was able to learn a lot of what goes on behind the scenes of an election.

I enjoyed the fact that the book had in depth character descriptions. I liked that Tyler knew exactly what he wanted and wouldn’t back down no matter the obstacle. I felt that he was a very strong main character.

Overall I really enjoyed this book and learned a lot more about politics than I originally knew. I thought the storyline was unique to me, considering I don’t read many political thrillers, and that I didn’t feel lost. I would highly recommend this book If you are a big fan of political thrillers or even if you are just looking for a place to begin.

When rock and roll mega-star Tyler Sloan throws his hat in the political arena, he learns just how cut throat politics can really be. No stranger to the political world, Tyler grew up the son of respected governor Mike Sloan, who lost the presidential race by a hair's breadth. Years later, both professionally bored and thoroughly disenchanted with the current contenders, Tyler decides to cash in on his celebrity fame to run for Nevada's open senate seat. With a bi-partisan front and strong ideals, he's hopeful of victory, but it doesn't take long to learn that past misdeeds have a way to haunt you; especially when you're in the limelight. A slow start sets the scene for this modern day political drama, and sadly that sluggishness carries throughout the majority of the story. Marketed as a thriller, those promised qualities failed to show, resulting in a less-than-exciting storyline. Not all negative, the author does provide an intriguing glimpse into the knock-down, drag-out fight that happens in a political campaign; both on the front lines and behind the scenes. Overall, to me, that was by far, the most interesting aspect of the story. If looking for a political drama with strong hints of romance, then ROLL THE DICE is a decent read. Although, if like myself, you are looking for a thriller as marketed, you may find this one a bit dissatisfying.

Tyler Sloan is the real deal. Without giving away the twists and turns of rock star - and governor's son - Tyler Sloan's maverick, independent off year campaign for the US Senate - it's enough to say, that Wayne Avrashow's book, Roll the Dice is a thrill ride from start to finish. In this day and age where politics is no longer under the purview of moribund political parties, and change is in everything, Roll the Dice is a refreshing and exhilarating ride through a political landscape fraught with the usual dangers in the pursuit of the ultimate triumph - power in the nation's capital, and the chance to make a difference.

Sloan's quixotic journey from world famous rocker to senate candidate from Nevada is filled with all the usual baggage - sexual scandals, deep family secrets, estrangement from his towering politician - and former California governor - father as well as a cast of characters that create political turbulence wherever they appear.

Avrashow's writing is tight, fast paced and has a delicious turn of phrase. It's often wildly funny, as well as exciting and thought provoking. I highly recommend this, and can't wait until we have a full blown discussion in the Original Voices book club.

Rock star and celebrity mogul Tyler Sloan decides to leave the entertainment world and run for one of Nevada’s senate seat in the US Congress. Sloan is no stranger to politics; his father, Mike, former governor, is vice president, but as he enters the fray, he learns that success in politics and success in entertainment are measured by different standards. Running as an independent, he finds himself pitted against two opponents who will do anything to defeat him, his own checkered past coming back to haunt him, and unresolved family issues plaguing him. Undaunted, though, he decides to ‘roll the dice,’ and stick it out.
Roll the Dice by Wayne Avrashow is a compelling political satire that lays bare the seamy underbelly of American politics in a series of intriguing scenarios, following Sloan’s up-and-down ride during a hard-fought campaign. Though fiction, this story could very well have been ripped from the headlines of recent actual political campaigns. After reading this book, you’ll never view politics the same again.
I received a free copy of this book. I give it four stars.

I loved this political thriller! Even with all his faults, Tyler Sloan is such a likeable character, and I was rooting for him from the very beginning of the book. There are a lot of slimy things about politics that go on behind the scenes, and Wayne Avrashow shines a light on a lot of these. This is the perfect time to read this book.

“Roll The Dice” by Wayne Avrashow begins with Tyler Sloan, a celebrated Rock Star in his 50s announcing that he is running for the United States Senate. The son of an accomplished and well-known politician had always competed with his brother for his father’s attention and favor. Although his brother died, the competition continued in Tyler’s heart and mind. After reaching stardom status, he decides to retire from the rocker lifestyle and enters the race for the US Senate as an Independent candidate, running against Rogers (Republican) and Collins (Democrat).

The main story breaks down the campaigning process, ethics and methods. I immediately thought of a bunch of celebrities who followed the same path and wondered how they managed the campaigning maze of fundraising, possible supporters interests, and less than perfect past; but what called my attention was the underlying story of Tyler’s awkward relationship with his father, his reconciliation with his Dad’s favoritism to his dead brother, and the animosity of his ex-wife. As a Political Science BA who worked in the field for a couple of years in Venezuela back in the 80s, I was very interested in the political process as it enlightened me in many aspects of the US political processes. However, I was personally captivated by the contrast of the vulnerability shown within Tyler’s personal life compared to his public persona.

In “Roll of Dice” it is obvious that Wayne Avrashow has mastered his writing and storytelling skills. I love how the characters and dialogue move the story forward. I felt he showed the story to me like a movie instead of telling it. His descriptions painted the picture, and the dialogue and genuine characters brought life to the story. It felt like I was reading a true story, even though I knew it to be a work of fiction.

“Roll The Dice” by Wayne Avrashow is an awesome, well-written story developed from current topics that will interest and captivate all readers. Whether they love political topics or general drama, readers will be captivated, entertained and educated about political campaigns in this five-star piece of fiction. Wayne Avrashow is an author to follow, and I look forward to seeing more from him.

“Roll the Dice” is a “fictitious” and timely look inside the American political process at a time when the traditional rules of the game no longer apply. Author Wayne Avrashow has created an intriguing and entertaining read that delves deeply into American politics and takes a look at the dark side of how campaigns are won. The book is clearly fictitious, but Avrashow's experience as a campaign manager inside the political process clearly shines through the story.

“Roll the Dice” tells the story of Tyler Sloan, a celebrated candidate who decides to run for office. Of course his campaign is plagued with all the stuff we have come to expect like backstabbing, sex scandals, and funding issues. What makes all of this special though is Avrashow's attention to detail. You truly feel like you are following a real campaign and that this book could have been a "behind the scenes” look at any of the recent presidential candidates' runs.

Avrashow also creates a well-based read that is hard to put down and while there are plenty of nuances, the book rarely feels stiff or dry. One real issue I have is that Avrashow's characters feel a bit cookie-cutter. Take Sloan, for instance. He is exactly what you would expect from a celebrated candidate and exactly what you need to move the story forward, but Avrashow never really flushes him or any of the other characters out completely. Most of them feel like they are strategically placed to move the story. This isn't a huge issue since the real focus here is the campaign and political process itself, and that is easily enough to make this a good read. The only other issue I have with “Roll the Dice” is that stakes never seem high enough. I know this may sound silly but literally, the only thing at stake here is who wins the election…so you know, just the White House. This in some ways goes back to the characters issue because we never really feel like the world will end for any of them no matter how the votes come out. Even if it would have ended, I never felt like I would have cared.

To conclude, “Roll the Dice” is a good read and even better if you're into politics which it seems like currently, everyone is. Wayne Avrashow brings a lot of realism and detail to the campaign process and it is a great commentary on the current political process in the United States. It is a smooth read that is highly enjoyable and timely.

Tyler Sloan is a star and a very well known one. His whole life Tyler lived in the political world as his father had been a California Governor who also participated in the Presidential Campaign but lost. However, it is a surprise for everyone, when Sloan suddenly announced that he would stop his rock star career to become Senator. Even though Tyler has all the necessary resources as his father had been himself in politics, Tyler does not want to have help from the outside. Not even from his father. He runs as an independent. Soon he gets caught in a political fraud with some other scandals as extras. Will everything turn right or will Tyler Sloan lose everything?

The synopsis of this book intrigued me, this is one of the reasons why I accepted to read it in exchange for an honest review and of course to feature the book on my blog during the blog tour. I’m not reading political thrillers that often as I don’t really understand much in foreign political affairs especially the American politics are very complicated to understand for somebody with a whole other political system like I’m used to. I apprehended the political part a little bit as I feared that I wouldn’t understand a single thing. Nevertheless, the author gave a lot of details and the whole story was easy to understand. There may have been some things that I didn’t really understand but in the end, it’s not stopping me from enjoying the story. I have to confess that I stressed a lot about Tyler winning or not. (I won’t tell you of course how the race ended. You have to read the book yourself in order to find out what’s going on.! ) I found myself smiling a lot and I honestly liked reading this book a lot. Unfortunately, I had to end the book sometime and I found myself to feel sadness when the book ended as I hoped to get more of the Sloan family.

It’s definitely a plus point that the author knew perfectly well what he was writing about due to his political background. The suspense lasted until the very last chapter and I honestly can’t complain. I only gave it 4 stars because I still missed the “OH MY GOD” moment but I still liked it a lot.

This is an informative read about the political world in the US and I recommend it to every single one of you that love to read a suspenseful thriller in the political field.

This political page turner is a great reflection of what goes on in the political arena every election. Is it possible to elect a man to high office who has zero political experience or knowledge? You can look at the people we have in office today and answer that question with a resounding YES and this book will give you a behind the scenes look at how the political machinery works to make it happen.

Tyler Sloane is one of the biggest names in music. He has won countless awards and despite the fact that he is getting older, he still sells out his Vegas shows. In his younger days, he was a definite bad boy with dirt ranging from drugs to multiple sex escapades. His father an esteemed senator has just barely lost the nomination for President of the US when Tyler decides to run for the Senate as an independent from the state of Nevada. Though people are unsure of his political stance, he has name recognition and makes the race more exciting just by entering. He know how to hire all the right managers and consultants and begins to make his way up in the polls. Even though he wants to campaign on the issues, he soon finds out that the press is more interested in his past life in rock and roll. Will he be successful in his run for Senate or will he be de-railed by his past? Read this page turning book to find out the answers and to see how political campaigns really work.

Thanks to the publisher for a copy of this book to read and review. All opinions are my own.

Roll the Dice immediately drops you into Tyler Sloan’s life as he completes his last ever stage appearance as a rock star and controversially announces his bid to run for senator of the independent party. While this book was political fiction, it easily could have been non-fiction given the current state of politics and our Commander in Chief’s own celebrity background.

Throughout the book, characters were constantly being inserted, including Tyler’s campaign staff, the other candidates and their staff, reporters, law enforcement, etc. You name it, the ensemble of characters was ever growing. However, the exposure author Wayne Avrashow gives the reader, into the science of politics, is unrivaled. Candidates, as portrayed in this book, had to be as skilled in wooing a crowd and engaging attention, as they were smart and knowledgeable. It would seem politics is a game of cat and mouse, between the candidates and the voters.

Ultimately, Roll the Dice was a more jumbled, less dramatic Scandal, except instead of Kerry Washington we had Tyler Sloan, the man with a more interesting rock star lifestyle. This book is full of several engaging plot lines and chalked full of drama and fun.

A big thank you to Wayne Avrashow for sending me a copy of his novel Roll the Dice. I won this off a YA Books Central Giveaway. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Very well-written, funny, and has just the right amount of suspense, it was interesting getting an insider's perspective on how to manage/run for a political campaign. Although the story was, yes, about a man running for the Senate, we see bits and parts of his life come out in ways you wouldn't suspect. Sloan was a very cool character to follow, and I really enjoyed seeing his characterization build upon itself as we traverse through the multitude of problems that Sloan is slogging through. He has his bad moments, the good moments, the awkward moments(I'm looking at you, Cindy), and family moments, the worst kind of dilemma to experience.

The only few rebukes I have to negatively state that this novel possesses are problems that deal with the story directly. We don't see enough of Riley, Martino, Cindy, Bree, etc. After their characters have been established, we see them once or twice throughout the rest of the book (except for Riley, and we barely see Martino after his ordeal), and I really didn't like the explanation of, "My ex-wife sabotaged me!!" There needed to be more to the story in all counts. Each character deserved their own wrap-up as Sloan had with his father.

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas...unless you're running for office and then nothing stays a secret.Tyler Sloan, rock star, decides to leave his music career behind and run for senator in the state of Nevada. A celebrity running for office...where have I heard that before?! Honestly this book couldn't have come out a more perfect time and having Las Vegas as the backdrop was the ideal setting.
Tyler's campaign is fraught with scandals (yes more than one) and the author definitely shines a light on the corruption and what really goes on in politics.
I found the book slow to start off with but then it really picked up and I found myself rooting for Tyler and hoping he would win the race and wondering what new hurdle he would have to jump. He is a likeable character who definitely has his flaws but I think that's what made him easy to like. He was relatable. I hope the author writes a second instalment as I would really like to see where Tyler's story goes as I found myself wondering 'what now?' when I finished the book.

A fine read about a retired rocker who decides to run for a US Senate seat. With party control of the government up for grabs, he finds himself enmeshed in a no-holds-barred contest and one of the questions he has to resolve is what he is willing to do (or condone) to win ... and if he does go along, does that invalidate his protest-candidate ideology? The key role seems to be channeling Steven Tyler, a popular but aging rocker making a name with the younger generation as a judge on American Idol (until it too folded). The book is pretty well written and edited, with only a few errors. It did take a few chapters to grow on me because the story-line is almost too simple, but the more I read the more compelling I found it, and that's the ultimate test in this genre. It's also not hyper-partisan, taking light shots at both sides, but I will say this: understand Tyler's fans and you'll understand the Trump electorate: they're not racists, they're not religious nuts, they're just fed up with the status quo.

A well done political thriller that follows a rock star Tyler Sloan as he makes a run for the U. S. Senate from his home state Nevada. Tyler's political experience consists of being the son of a former California Governor who also made a failed run for the White House.

So, Tyler is used to being a celebrity on two fronts: one as songwriting singer of incredibly popular music but also as the son of an extremely popular political figure.
The author creates an engaging story as we follow Tyler on his journey from celebrity to politician.

Roll the Dice is an enjoyable read. The political intrigue and tension are well developed. The novel's pace is steady. Characters and relationships are realistic. The issues that create the novel's necessary tension and their respective resolutions are plausible. And the author skillfully wraps it up by the last page.

Tyler Sloan was at the top of his game as a Rocker but wanted to give back in the political field. His dad had been the governor of California so he knew about the political arena. He is running for senator from Nevada as an independent. He has two people to beat. Tyler has a well known name and he is very popular but he knows it takes more. He is not taking contributions but using his own money. Are there glitches along the way, you bet but he has hired the best political help he knows to help him over the line. There are problems from his past which are out there for him to wonder if they will surface but he just keeps pressing forward. An interesting take on the run for office and what can make or break the candidate.

Roll the Dice is- not surprisingly- a Las Vegas based story involving a pop star running for the U.S. Senate. [Think of Sonny Bono, or Ronald Reagan or Al Franken - the comedian] Not much gambling talk, or gambling action in the book, but a lot about how a campaign is run [mostly badly] and how important money and key supporters are to win.

On top of that, of course, are all of the things in a candidate's background that the campaign wants to bury or keep silent or pretend did not happen. Great story and not unlike probably many that are true around our country. This one is fiction.

Amazingly, the author has been a campaign manager for two successful campaigns, is a practicing attorney, and managed as well to write this book!

I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway.

This is more than just a normal political thriller.
It had many details about Nevada and specifically Las Vegas so I wonder if the author spent some time there or simply did great research.
It was an interesting political drama with traditional Republican and Democratic values and a potentially “flawed” candidate as an independent. He was flawed only because he had no political experience. Does this sound somewhat familiar? If so, this candidate is not what you think. He was a rock star with benefits. It was a very thoughtful presentation of what it would be like to run in this era of politics. It seemed quite realistic.

I won this book from Goodreads, and must admit I learned a lot about how political campaigns are run...and won. I now know a lot that I wish I didn't know! This is a novel about a Las Vegas Rock Star who decides to follow in his father's political footsteps, but do it differently. Tyler Sloan had lots of popularity, due to his song writing and singing...but the political arena is a total different story! He runs for the senate, but as an Independent. The Republican and the Democrat who are his opponents will risk anything to stop him. We don't know until the end of the book if he wins or not...but I won't spoil it for you!

Tyler Sloan is a former rock star who is running for the U.S. Senate. His father was a former governor so Sloan has politics in his blood. While trying to defend himself from sex scandal, corruption he is in for an uphill battle for his campaign. I really enjoyed reading this intriguing political thriller fiction.

This is a political novel. Rock star seeking Senate seat. Couldn't connect with any of the characters in this book. If I can't connect to someone, I lose interest. Thanks to Goodreads.

Enjoyed the book. I'm a political junkie, elected twice to local office so I could relate somewhat.

Goodreads win

Not my typical read. I usually stay away from political things whether fake or real. This took me for a ride. I had my ups and downs. A good read filled with excitement.

"Lobbyists and special interests say voting for me is a roll of the dice, but I’m not the gamble. The real gamble is continuing on the same path with the same people and same stale ideas."

I'm not usually a big fan of political thrillers or any offshoots of the political spectrum. But the blurb on this book caught my eye and I'm glad I read it. It's very different from most political books and that's a huge plus in my eyes.

Tyler Sloan has been a mega rock star for years and he also heads up a financial dynasty making him a rich, rich man. But he grew up around politics - his father was once Governor of California and made an unsuccessful run to be President.

There's suddenly an opening for U.S. Senator of Nevada and Tyler Sloan decides to run on the Independent ticket.

This story is a behind-the-scenes look at a major campaign that Tyler runs fairly cleanly. It was interesting and scary too because the storyline is all too plausible.

I read and enjoyed the story but I do have to say that my favorite parts of it were about Tyler's rocker past, not the politics.

I received this book from Fiery Seas Publishing through Net Galley in the hopes that I would read the book and leave an unbiased review for it.
