Doomstar by Richard S. Meyers sounded like a good read from the blurb on the back. I was wary however because it was described as humorous science fiction. With very few exceptions I do not care for humorous science fiction/fantasy novels. I am afraid that this is one of the novels I did not really care for. The attempts at humor were shallow and the author tried too hard to make the characters seem exotic. This book has received many positive reviews, however, so it may be just my dislike for humorous science fiction.

I first read this book when I was about 12. I enjoyed. Throughout the years I re-read it maybe twice - and although it now seems simplistic and basic, I STILL love the humor! Easy to follow, good vs bad (not evil) sci-fi that you will have no problem with your kids reading. However!... The sequel is a big disappointment.
I wanted so bad for this to be made into a movie, as sci fi movies in the 70s (except Star wars) had poor special effects. I contacted Richard Meyers for his thoughts and he said he sold the rights to Disney (?). Don't quote me on that. Disney used elements of Doom Star for their other productions.

This is one of the books that I read in high school that for some reason has always stuck with me. So much so that years later I spent hours and hours tracking it down based on dimly remembered plot points since I forgot the author and book title.

I can't say that this is a really good book, or even a truly enjoyable one. I has a dark and nihilistic future, none of the characters are really good, or even truly evil as much as petty and self serving and kind of small, even the heroes, but some of the individual scenes and ideas have just always stayed with me and though it didn't strike me as much reading it as an adult, I'm still glad I tracked it down.

This is an easy to read, very fun book. If you're looking for hard core scifi, this isn't for you. If you want an entertaining book to read on a lazy summer day, look no farther.
