Most people think the Cold War ended when the Soviet Union collapsed. Though the USSR may have been beaten, their war infrastructure and resentment didn’t simply go away. What if there were still secret weapons systems in place and angry old men eager to set them off?
In From within the Firebird’s Nest, former KGB official Sergei Kirill Mikhailov revives a secret biological weapon: the Crimson Firebird. His aim is to strike a devastating blow to the United States while pinning the blame on an impressionable young Arab man, thus initiating a global crisis.
Meanwhile, one of Sergei’s former colleagues is scrambling to stop the weapon from being deployed and recruits an unlikely team that includes his son (now a banker in Oklahoma), a former Stasi agent, and an American writer named Evan. Together they must shed light on foes hiding in the dark and save the world from unthinkable destruction.
Crypto codes, numbers stations, and sleeper agents all factor into this ultra-high-stakes story of international intrigue. The Cold War gets a little warmer with each page, and all the animosity from the past builds and finally bursts in a shocking conclusion.

The title comes from a KGB program, code-named "Crimson Firebird" to provide a doomsday scenario to the US should it launch a preemptive nuclear attack on the USSR and wipe out its ability to retaliate. In it, deep sleeper agents were embedded in the US, and on receiving certain code words through radio signals that were to be transmitted on certain times of the week, the agents would launch a biological attack on the US with a deadly virus that would wipe out most of the US population. The Soviet Union fell, but in such a chaotic way the KGB did not have the time to cancel the program and withdraw the agents. Accordingly, by about now, the only aged senior KGB officer left for some reason decide=s to initiate the program anyway. An ex-Stasi agent finds out about it from an old friend who was the other one who designed the program, and sets out to cancel it. He finds most of the dumps, but not all, and to save his friend's son, he gets Evan to help. The plot is quite convoluted and detailed, and while it has some rather loopy characteristics (surely the KGB would require the agents to check whether there was a nuclear war going on – it is not something that could be kept secret – and surely they would have a way to stop some lunatic from activating it) it reads very well if you accept the premises. The characters are drawn sympathetically and are believable and the writing is fluent. Most of the threads resolve themselves quite well with believable and not overdrawn climax scenes. There are some negatives. Abi's thread had a climax that I shook my head over. (If your mother thought your father had been murdered for carrying out some noble deed, would not she tell you?) Secret squirrel to get more climax doesn't work for me. But overall, a good piece of entertainment.
“From Within the Firebird's Nest” was a fabulous read, Sheldon Charles definitely doesn’t let his readers down in this third installment in the series. As always Charles includes interesting twists all bound into an intriguing plot. “From Within the Firebird's Nest” is a fast-paced thriller that takes you back and forth between the past during the cold war to present day. The book is creatively written and pulls the reader into the story. It was one of the harder books to put down; it is an absolute edge of your seat suspenseful thriller that will hold your attention to the last page. Though the book has a political base, it is still more of a suspense thriller and shouldn’t be overlooked for as it doesn’t bog the reader down in useless details of the political world. Of the three books in the Evan Davis Tale series, I think that this one is my favorite. Not all books in a series can match the first book in the series, but this book knocks the first book out of the park. I think my biggest complaint is that he only has the three books out on the market. Side note I love the book’s cover!
“From Within the Firebird’s Nest” is an intriguing good book that will take you on quite the intellectual adventure and will keep you guessing and breathless up until the very last page. And this one is most certainly a thrilling page-turner. Whether you are into military history, spy novels, tales of action or are simply looking for a book that is new and unlike the rest, “From Within the Firebird’s Nest” is going to be a very, very good one that you should consider picking up! You will most definitely not be let down if you give this exceptional book a shot.
A compelling and gripping thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat!
Whatever flaws we might identify or frustrations we might feel are trivial in comparison to a reader's pure joy in losing himself/herself in a narrative. When all the elements come together: an intriguing plot, thoughtful, profound themes, complex, troubling, characters, and language that will amaze for its clarity, directness and confidence; we gratefully set all analysis aside and give ourselves up to the sheer magic of a great book. And for me, From Within the Firebird's Nest, is such a book.
Author Sheldon Charles weaves an intense tale of mystery and suspense, with intriguing twists and turns that will easily captivate the reader's attention from the beginning. The author paints an 'ultra-high-stakes story of international intrigue' in a very vivid and convincing way.
The book description says it all; 'Most people think the Cold War ended when the Soviet Union collapsed. Though the USSR may have been beaten, their war infrastructure and resentment didn’t simply go away. What if there were still secret weapons systems in place and angry old men eager to set them off?

Now, if that’s not enough to whet your appetite, I don’t know what will. But if you want to find out what happens you’ll just have to turn the pages for yourself to find out! But I will say it's well worth the read. It's my first time reading this author and I must say I was very impressed.
This captivating and commendable work had me immersed from the beginning. The story flowed from scene to scene with ease, and the author shows exceptional ability when it comes to storytelling. There are plenty of attention-grabbing moments in this page turner that will take the reader on a compelling and gripping journey.
It’s one of those books that come along once in a while that makes you want to read it non-stop until you get to the end. I’m giving nothing further away here. And this, I hope, will only add to the mystery and enjoyment for the reader. I will say, however, that fans of the mystery, thriller and suspense genre will love having a nibble on this one!
If this book is anything to go by, I’ll certainly be looking forward to reading more from Sheldon Charles in the future. I would definitely recommend this book and would love to see it adapted for the Silver Screen. Five stars from me.
From Within the Firebirds Nest is a riveting tale that catapults readers into a world filled with mystery, conspiracy, and unimaginable dangers. The narrative introduces a realm that is laced with tension, uncertainty, and impending doom over the possible detonation of deadly bioweapons. Espionage, crypto-codes, and number stations are all key components in this captivating account — where any wrong or uncalculated move could spell total annihilation!
I rarely use the word ‘wow’ but that is exactly the impression this book left me — Wow! From the very first page up to the last, there wasn’t a single dull moment. I would be up at odd hours completely engrossed in the narrative in anticipation of what would happen next. I must say, this is the best book I’ve read all year in its genre. It had the perfect blend of mystery and suspense; there were also a number of plot twists that I totally did not see coming, which sure kept me on the edge of my seat. The pace had a nice steady incline with every passing chapter building up the level of intensity. I could tell there was a lot of research that went into writing the book: the setting created, locations mentioned, organizations and weapons all fit into the narrative that not only created a tale that was enjoyable to read but one that was very convincing as well.
Additionally, the three points I usually look for in a novel were all there. The characters were well fleshed out and believable; most characters introduced were central to the plot. The events that occurred were compelling to read. And finally, the author’s storytelling ability was great. I was amazed by how the story wrapped in the end. This was my first Sheldon Charles novel and it certainly won’t be my last. This is a book I’d definitely recommend to anyone who appreciates a high-quality thriller and mystery novel laced with just the right dose of suspense.
Even if at the first impression the war/espionage topics approached in Sheldon Charles novel seemed to be primarily written for the male audience, I was pleased surprised by the set of well-developed language, characters (here I would especially mention the protagonist – the formed KGB official Sergei Kirill Mikhailov) and twisted plot. It got me into the story right from the first pages, even if in general I’m not a big fan of this genre.
From the professional manner in which the author wrote “From within the Firebird’s Nest,” by mixing an impressing dose of conspiracy, suspense and intrigue, I suppose that there is a lot of facts quality research behind it. Due to this, the story resulted into a different and, at the same time captivating, perspective over what the history could have been.
I would warmly recommend Sheldon Charles book to the Mystery, Thriller & Suspense fans and, simultaneously, to the readers who are craving for a page-turner!
Exceptionally well written story of international espionage.
This is the third book in the Evan Davis Tale series. While it is part of a series you do not need to read the first two books to understand what is going on and fully enjoy this book. Though I personally will be checking out the rest of this series, because if this book is any indication of how the others are I’m sure I have plenty of sleepless nights staying up to read “just one more page”! Sheldon Charles does an amazing job creating his characters and introduces the main players complete with their backstory/motivation within the first 70-80 pages. After that you’re plunged into the depths of a story full of international espionage, secret lives, spies, and adventure. Charles really does a beautiful job of keeping the reader guessing about what will happen next. I highly recommend this book and can’t wait to check out his other works.
“From Within the Firebird’s Nest” by Sheldon Charles is a gripping thriller for those who enjoy action, adventure, and conspiracy. Julian, our hero, is an average, everyday banker who lives in a non-descript town in Oklahoma, but he carries a secret that could change the world. The Cold War has ended, but Julian’s dad knows too much to have forgotten it. He knows about a plan that a former KGB officer, his old colleague, has to destroy the US by using a biological weapon called the Crimson Firebird. Using Julian and a writer named Evan, they work together to expose the officer’s plan to the country, but who would believe another conspiracy theory in a world teeming with conspiracy theories already. Will it be too late when they are finally taken seriously? The characters and plot are realistic and believable and you won’t be able to stop turning the pages.
This book by Sheldon Charles is the third in his An Evan Davis Tale series. It will take readers into the hostile Cold War era and explore how while the USSR might have lost it, they have not forgotten, and are still resentful. Protagonist Evan Davis learns that KGB agent Sergei Kirill Mikhailov is trying to restore a deadly biological weapon known as the Crimson Firebird. Mikhailov plans to use this weapon to destroy the United States while placing blame for it on another. It’s up to Davis to help stop Mikhailov from restoring the weapon to prevent unspeakable damage from being done. If you like history and politics, you’ll definitely enjoy this novel. While fictional, it’s filled with interesting historical information which will let you learn more about the Cold War. In addition to this, Charles adds plenty of suspense and plot twists to his story making it a thrilling read.
This book is an interesting spy thriller. The author clearly knows the subject matter very well and has descriptive writing that paints a wonderful picture. You can tell a lot of time and research has been put into this book. There are a lot of different characters, but they’re all distinct and easy to read. The plots all make sense and tie together. My only complaint is that the book needs some more editing – there are a lot of formatting issues and typos that can be distracting. If you can ignore those, which I unfortunately have a hard time doing, you’ll enjoy this thrilling novel about Russian sleeper agents.
This book probes at the question, “What happens to a defeated war effort?” Not only does Mr. Charles takes on the view that infrastructure within the former Societ Union continued to grow after the war efforts died. It has everything from coverups to relationship issue.
Unfortunately, I realized how sparse my knowledge on the cold war was during this reading and was very thankful for Google to help me fill in some holes. While it makes sense that the characters know everything that was going on, I felt lost a few times. The politics lost me a few times as well, but towards the end, everything wrapped up very neatly.
Overall, this is a great read that really could stand on its own as there are no significant cliff-hangers. I’ll be on the looking for the next book in the series and am excited to see how this author continues to grow. His ability to weave multiple stories together is lovely to read!
This is a great thriller and one that will definitely keep you on your toes while reading. Evan Davis, a news writer (and author Sheldon Charles' perennial hero), gets an anonymous letter suggesting "the loser can still strike back....." he finds himself irresistibly immersed in a struggle to save Earth from Armageddon. The characters in this story are developed greatly. The combination of spy-craft and street smarts will be needed down to the last few seconds of this fast-moving, scene-changing, time-bending thriller.
From Within The Firebird’s Nest by Sheldon Charles was book I read out of sheer curiosity and partly because I wanted to read something new and out of my ordinary genre. I was not disappointed. In fact I’m very glad I read it. The book surprised me in many ways.
The author sets up a story, which is a web of a few stories, that eventually get woven together. I was waiting for a good chunk of the book for it all to come together and sometimes I found myself doubting whether it could all sync up, since the characters derived from vastly different circumstances and regions of the world, but Sheldon Charles pulled it off perfectly. The end result was a story that was both intriguing and suspenseful. This is a thriller for sure.
This is an action suspense spy book. A lot of these kind of books have sort of an old timey feel to me. Like a wartime nostalgia. Which isn’t really my thing. So I was partially skeptical going into it. But the author did a good job making this book more modern. I felt like I was reading something written for anybody who just wanted a fun cool story.
The book is gritty and has some political undertones. I am a young adult and I found it to be totally fine. I don’t know that much about the USSR or the Cold War personally, but it didn’t matter that much. I was able to follow and catch on just fine.
I happened upon this book while searching for something to read. I was drawn to it by the enticing title and the beautiful cover (yes, I have to admit these two features are my first filter). Upon reading the description I understood it was an espionage story, not a genre I am particularly accustomed to. I chose to give it a try and haven’t regretted it for a second! The fil rouge for the story is Julian, an accomplished bank manager in Oklahoma, who hides a rather different origin than the one everyone around him has been lead to think as belonging to him. Through Julian’s story we are introduced into the mechanisms of the Soviet’s Espionage Services during and after the cold war. We follow the paths of life of two high bureaucrats of the KGB, both loyal to their motherland, but with very different human principles. Fyodor, Julian’s father, was a field agent before his cover was blown; being forced back to his country, he became one of the chiefs in the most secret project of the services. Nonetheless, he was always capable of seeing the big picture, thus understanding well in advance how the Soviet Union was heading towards failure, endangering people in his position and their families with them. With this in mind, he used the only path he saw possible to insure his son a safe and solid future, without betraying his motherland. His partner in the secret defense project, Sergei, does not share Fyodor’s vision and scruples. He loves power and does not understand how times are changing and old enemies can start sharing little apertures. Sergei falls in disgrace with the new government in Russia and is compelled to fly. Still he does not surrender to the idea of being cast out, and plans on setting his old project into motion, in order to cause havoc in the western world, giving his motherland the leadership over the world and regaining his place of honour within the State. In order to set off the mechanism he starts manipulating a young and naïve Palestinian guy. An important place in the novel is also reserved to two female figures, or, thinking about it, I would say three. Ashley and Camille, two very different women, - intriguing and mysterious the first, tender and caring the latter - but both strongly determined to preserve what is important for them. A special mention also for Nastia, for allowing herself to doubt the orders she received.
I enjoyed many aspects of this book. First the insight into the work of espionage services, and their many degenerations. I have greatly appreciated the sober style of the author, skillfully measuring himself with scenes of violence and sex, without ever falling into excesses; moreover, the book moves around a setting of relations between the two world superpowers, also touching the topic of terrorism, but never gives in to propaganda or cheap judgment. Another thing I enjoyed is the capability of the narrator to explore the feelings of these men trained to be as cold as stones. This is particularly the case of Fyodor and his devotion toward his son, and Dieter and his friendship with Fyodor. In addition to all of this there is the action, the fast pacing and suspense. And that bit of romance that always adds that little spicy taste to the story. Finally, this book is so much filled with stories that intertwine perfectly, action to keep you gripped and food for thought, that I cannot but recommend it to anyone who is looking for a very rich and fulfilling read.
FWFN was a thrilling book. Character development was great. It all comes together in a perfect recipe for turning the pages faster and faster. Spies, lies, and a honeypot. This book has it.
From Within the Firebird’s Nest by Sheldon Charles is a captivating read about the realities of revenge, the thirst for power, and the dedication of those trained in the art of spying. Julian is a banker in the town of Alva, OK. He has a good life with his wife and kids, but what no one knows is that Julian is a spy trained by the Russian KGB. At the age of six his father, Fyodor, dropped him off at a training academy and he never saw him again, even though his father secretly kept tabs on him. Fyodor knew that the Russian government was on the path to destruction so he sacrificed Julian to the academy to be sent to the United States as a sleeper agent when he reached adulthood. This selfless act ensured safety and a good life for Julian, who knew that he may someday be required to perform a mission in the United States that would benefit Russia, but had no idea what devastation it would cause. After decades of dormancy, two individuals sought to use the network set in place for this one time mission to achieve their own goals: one because of hate for the United States and the other for advancement in the name of Allah. Fyodor had the forethought prior to his demise to put plans in motion to stop the death of millions, including his own son, and this story chronicles the actions taken by his good friend Dieter to stop the destruction. Dieter enlists the aid of Evan, a writer, to help in finding one of the last devices to be used in the diabolical plot. Join them and a host of other characters as the race is on to deactivate this device before those who intended evil succeeded. There is adventure; murder; greed; and budding romance mixed all together to produce a gripping page turner. I read this book in a day and a half because I could not wait to see how Mossad, a former Russian agent, a writer, and an ex stripper would work together to prevent the destruction of the United States. Even though it is fictional, I was amazed at the amount of time that surely must go into the training of spies and I was intrigued by the dedication that they all possessed regardless of the country they served. This is definitely a story that readers who love adventure will love. I hope there is a sequel!
Firebird – not Stravinsky’s – signals a new look at Russian intrigue
Michigan author Sheldon Charles, a decorated Air Force veteran, has experienced life in many places around the world, and from such exposure and life events he sculpts novels that transport the reader realistically and emotionally in a manner few writers can duplicate. His honors include favored status in the fields of Russian historical fiction and War fiction. "From Within the firebird’s Nest" is Book 3 of his Evan David tales.
Sheldon Charles develops the scenario for his books in the opening chapter, allowing the mystery of what is to follow by sharing the personalities and histories of the ancillary characters – in this case the key person is one Julian, whom we learn is a Russian who was transported out of Russia by is father when the collapse of the Soviet Union was foreseen necessitated Julian/Dmitry learn English and American culture to be established in the USA in Oklahoma, in tune with the KGB ‘back home.’ After setting the tone with this mystery our titular hero, writer Evan Davis, enters, back from Kuwait and Afghanistan, suffering from PTSD, and settled in Michigan where his new adventure begins – on its way to Russia. Sheldon’s very brief synopsis offers the bait to seduce us into this terrific novel: ‘Most people think the Cold War ended when the Soviet Union collapsed. Though the USSR may have been beaten, their war infrastructure and resentment didn’t simply go away. What if there were still secret weapons systems in place and angry old men eager to set them off?’
Though the outline of the plot is well presented, it is the caliber of Charles’ writing that makes this espionage thriller so involving. The book’s length is substantial, but once opened, the action and events and premises are so compelling that pausing the experience is not likely. Highly Recommended – Sheldon Charles is a superb weaver of stories!
I went into Within the Firebird's Nest with a metaphorical eyeroll; spy novels are not my thing. More not my thing? Russian spy novels. Yeah, about that... turns out I have no idea what my 'thing' is because Sheldon Charles wrote a Russian spy novel that I couldn't tear my eyes from. When life demanded that I do so, I was thinking about the characters and what was happening, rushing through chores to get back to the book.
I haven't done any research into the authors expertise when it comes to this subject matter but he wove an intricate tale around everything from the plethora of local and international settings to the numerous creatively complex characters. I wouldn't find myself too surprised to find out his knowledge was far more professional than that of a simple writer. Okay, there's the book getting to me again! I find myself creating diabolical narratives around very benign people and events around me now. Thanks a lot, Charles!
Within the Firebird's Nest by Sheldon Charles is a spy and espionage thriller that includes past and former Russian operatives, sleeper cells and below the radar operations that are sure to engage and entertain the reader
Evan Davis is the hero and he has been called upon to disrupt and foil the plan that threatens the very existence of the United States and by extension causing chaos around the globe.
From the beginning the narrative is very intriguing and builds to a point where you know something foreboding is going to happen but you just don't know when.
One of the casts of characters is a bank's regional manager that lives in northern Oklahoma. His name is Julian and he works for the Ranchers and Farmers Bank. Life is good. He has met and married an exceptional lady and has settled nicely into life and has been blessed with three children.
Not much is known about his background only that he emigrated from Russia. When the topic of conversation comes around about his parents the answer is vague due to the death of his parents in a car crash when he was young. This story is not entirely true.
Julian is a busy man and being the regional manager for the bank, often his calendar is full of meetings and events that occupy his time. However, not on his calendar of appointments are two important events during the course of the week that he never misses. One is on Tuesday and one is on Thursday.
During the week at precisely the same times week after week, Julian sits with a notepad and paper and...listens.
And so the questions abound. Who is Julian? What is he listening for twice a week in front of his radio? Who is transmitting? What may be the possible message? Why all the secrecy? And how will it affect the world?
Within the Firebird's Nest by Sheldon Charles is a stunning, engaging, compelling and intriguing Cold War drama that is bound to send chilling possibilities up and down the spine of the reader and sets the hero, Evan Davis, into action.
Sheldon Charles has done a wonderful job in writing this compelling narrative that is sure to keep the reader spellbound page after page as the melodrama unfolds that may have truthful implications for today and the world in which we live.
If so, then read the book entitled, “From Within the Firebird’s Nest (An Evan Davis Tale Book 3)” by Sheldon Charles Czecho.
Fyodor Ilyich Maldroski is a Soviet Union KGB operative. In 1972, Fyodor joined his colleague Sergei Kirill Mikhailov in a new project called the “Crimson Firebird Initiative (CFI)”. This program was formed to “provide the Soviet Union with a way to retaliate against the United States should they ever initiate a nuclear first strike.”
Fyodor decides to place his son, Dmitry in the program to ensure he has a promising future before the foreseen collapse of the Soviet Union and KGB in 1991.
When Dmitry Fyodorevich Maldroski arrived at the Academy, he became Julian Shepherd and was given a new birthday which would be used as an “entry code” for the L-PAK, a launch system for the bioweapon.
Evan Davis, a writer, receives an anonymous envelope on his front porch which leads him to meet Julian Shepherd. He eventually becomes involved with Dieter Sieg who gives Evan a letter written by Fyodor to his son, Dmitry.
Come into the communication room to create the secret “Validation Codes”, “Routine Messages”, “Warning Messages”, “Preparation Messages”, “Execution Messages” or join in listening to the shortwave radio for the over-the-air radio transmission to gain the “access code” to defuse a biological weapon or warfare device before it detonates.
Evan Davis asks Julian Shepherd to help him disarm the weapons to prevent any accidents.
Things become intense when “a weapon was set off which caused a massive fire, and the nature of the weapon appeared to be biological”. The United States prepares for a military retaliation because of “rocket parts being found” as well as “traces of an unknown pathogen.”
Accordingly, “there was no reason for the Russian government to launch a bioweapons attack against the United States.”
Eventually, it is concluded that the Russian government was not to blame for the launch of the weapons.
When I heard that Sheldon Charles was coming back with another thrilling adventure in the Evan Davis Tale series, I was absolutely thrilled! Evan Davis, the protagonist of the series, is an American writer who has a talent for taking apart challenging and dangerous political situations. Therefore, he is chosen to save the American people when a heinous plan by an ex-KGB agent threatens their lives. From Within the Firebird's Nest is a well-paced espionage novel that will take you into the era of the Cold War and how cold-blooded the weaponry and agents of the time used to be. Although written as fiction, this story shows a world that could unnervingly be not that far from reality. I enjoyed the thrilling suspense that Sheldon Charles built with such detail and ease. The characters of this book are well-written, with backstories that make them more realistic and exciting. The best part about this book was that it doesn't give away the plot at any time but maintains suspense with a complex yet filler-free story. If you are a historical fiction enthusiast like me, you would absolutely love From Within the Firebird's Nest, an unforgettable page-turner that will make you eager for Evan's next adventure!
Having read the first two novels in the series, I was immensely excited for the third installation and was not disappointed! From Within the Firebird's Nest is another thrilling adventure of American freelance writer Evan Davis who is drawn to a strange message from a possible former KGB spy. Although the Cold War was over years ago, the infrastructure and the retaliation weaponry against the US still exists. When a resentful old KGB agent decides to activate the dangerous program consisting of sleeper agents who are set to launch a dangerous biological attack, it is up to Evan Davis to form an unlikely alliance to save the US population and the future of the country.
The plot and the novel's pace are exhilarating and don't allow a moment for your eyes to stray from the page. I loved how Charles built complex characters to be so realistic and believable. I am a fan of historical fiction, especially Cold War espionage, which is why I appreciated the vivid details about the sleeper operatives, secret operations, and terrorism placed so brilliantly in a modern setting. I would recommend this highly to someone looking for an unconventional spy thriller.
Drawing inspiration from the dangerous era of the Cold War, From Within the Firebird’s Nest is a fast-paced novel about Evan Davis. He is an American writer who learns about an old but indignant KGB officer, Sergei Kirill Mikhailov’s plan that threatens the lives of modern-day Americans. Mikhailov is in the process of restoring a dangerous program that will launch a biological weapon in the USA–the Crimson Firebird. It is up to Evan and Julian, the son of Mikhailov’s close friend, to expose his plan to stop him but would anyone believe them? Will their pleas be considered another conspiracy theory among hundreds?
This book by Sheldon Charles was not easy to put down! The realistic characters and intriguing action-packed plot will keep historical fiction fans hooked throughout. The world of espionage built by Charles is replete with codebooks, spies, sleeper operations, ciphers, and conspiratorial agents; sure to draw you in and take you to a world rife with political tension and adventure. I found From Within the Firebird’s Nest by Sheldon Charles highly entertaining and worth rereading whenever you need a dose of action in your life.
A thrilling novel that brings back the tensions of the Cold War into the modern world, From Within the Firebird's Nest is a thrilling novel that will keep fans of the series, like me, hooked to the plot. Evan Davis, the American writer famous for navigating tough political dilemmas, finds himself saving the US population against an ex-KGB agent gone rogue. Crimson Firebird, a program to launch a deadly biological weapon in the US, is being restored by a resentful former officer Mikhailov. Evan must navigate the conspiracies that surround the USSR and the Cold War to expose the truth to the country and save its future. I found myself engrossed as I followed the protagonist along his journey as he receives a strange and cryptic message from the ex-KGB agent and battles for truth to overcome evil. The plot is realistically built and has vivid imagery that will draw you into a world of espionage, secret weaponry, complex characters, multicultural settings, and thrilling adventure, making this book worthy of a high rating! I loved the richness of the book's plot and found the characters' backstories to be the most interesting part.
From Within the Firebird's Nest might just be the best book in the Evan Davis Tales series! The exciting elements of Cold War espionage: spies, ciphers, codebooks, sleeper operatives, terrorists, and vengeance threaten the people and the future of the United States. This book kept me entertained until the last page with a realistic plotline, vivid characters, and nail-biting tension.
Evan Davis, an American writer, receives a cryptic message from a former KGB agent that makes him go on a dangerous adventure that he might not return from. An operation with sleeper operatives to unleash a mass-level biological weapon in the United States must be exposed to the country before it’s too late. Will Evan Davis be successful or fail in the face of complex secrets, conspiracies and terrorist movements?
The book's story is well-researched and allowed me to learn a lot about the Cold War and how agents and terrorist groups used to act. The realistic backdrop of the tension between modern Russia and the United States also created a brand new and intriguing premise that kept me intrigued about the ending. Highly recommended.
I was really surprised how easily I got sucked into this book. Once it started I couldn't put it down and it makes you wonder if something like this could really happen in the United States. I'm a little disappointed with the ending because I felt it could be a little more detailed and thorough, but all in all, I would highly recommend this to anyone that has curiosity. The subject matter definitely wasn't something I was expecting to enjoy, but this book took me by surprise with every turn of the page. I would definitely say that I wasn't expecting as much action as there is in this. It's a roller coaster, but one well worth the ride if you ask me. I liked how the characters were developed and how they all intertwined with each other, not many stories will do that anymore. It's very hard to find a story that will keep my attention as long as this one did. I'm very pleased and hoping for a sequel.
