Portrait of an Icon contains 58 of the greatest names within football’s recent history, every one profiled in their own short chapter. There are eight book-only Portraits (including Pelé, Arrigo Sacchi, Diego Maradona, and Pep Guardiola), a foreword by Jamie Carragher, and illustrations from the likes of Dan Leydon, Steve Welsh, Stan Chow and more.
While it's nice getting a little snapshot of 58 variously brilliant footballers from the game's history, for me it left me just wanting more about each one. I know that's not the point of a book like this, but that was my impression. Still enjoyed it.
A book that really highlights the artistry of the game. How so much more than just sheer ability encapsulates what makes a footballer special to so many.
