The Defenders face threats Satanic, Seussian and everything in between! Marvel's greatest non-team will take you on adventures made with their own special brand of action and interpersonal drama, topped by a heaping helping of the absurd! In this Epic Collection, the Defenders battle the cosmic Over-Mind, the alternate-Earth Squadron Supreme, the fan-favorite Elf with a Gun, the Avengers and even themselves! Patsy Walker's relationship with Daimon Hellstrom - the Son of Satan - will flower, while classic Defenders - Hulk, Namor, and the Silver Surfer - will return! Out of it all, the New Defenders -featuring Iceman, Angel, Beast, and Moondragon - will rise, and nothing will be the same. Same as it ever was!
A blend of the weird and the wonderful, this Epic Collection has it all. Personal stories of Defenders: Devil Slayer, Hellcat, Damian Hellstrom, Gargoyle. The return of Nighthawk, The Squadron Supreme and more.
The weird stories were tough to get through, but they all lead somewhere (even that damned Elf created by Steve Gerber finally got a full story).
Again, Love the Defenders and their Non-group, but that changes with The New Defenders staring: Beast, Angel, Iceman, Valkirie, and Gargoyle.
So sad about Doctor Strange, Namor, Silver Surfer, and the Hulk--but that is another tale for another time.
I'm torn. 3,5 stars? The issues focusing on individual characters are some of the best I've read from Marvel in the '80s — easily as good, if not better as Claremont's X-Men. I also enjoyed the tonal variety from whacky-esoteric to religious-philosophical. Unfortunately there are a lot of filler issues in the beginning and towards the end and the artwork's also bit formulaic and too uneven throughout the volume to earn a full four stars. Still a very nice discovery of an offbeat book from my favorite Marvel era.
DeMatteis really does it for me. There is a plesant leval of devil worchip and mystical nonsense in every issue and while I could live without "Elf with a gun" on the whole I was happy to be along for the ride.
