My Mum is Fantastic, is one of a collection of books about wonderful family members, by renown author Nick Butterworth.

The book is a celebration of one young boy’s mum, and what he finds fantastic about her. He loves that his mum can make the best parties in the world, can mend anything, and that she can swim like a fish, amongst many other fantastic things that she can accomplish.

I like that there are unusual things that his mum can do too, such as walk on a tightrope, or do amazing stunts on a bike. I can see children asking their mums if they can do these things, and if not, why not.

The illustrations fit the book perfectly, and represent every aspect of what the boys mum can do, so the book doesn’t just tell you what his mum is good at, but shows you too.

Being a board book, this would be perfect for little children, especially with the rounded edges so that they can’t hurt themselves on the corners.

A lovely book for a younger child that they will enjoy reading, or just looking at the pictures. It would also make a wonderful present for mums to receive on their birthday or Mother’s Day from their son or daughter children.

This book is a story about a FANTASTIC MUM! It portrays that mums know and can do everything. It is at an appropriate level for Early Years children. They will not be able to fluently read it in Reception however they will be able to recognise some of the phonemes and graphemes in the words. I used this book with my Reception children to fit in with the theme of the term, Family. Everything I did with the children in maths, creative curriculum and especially english was around this book.

I carried out writing activities with the children where they had to write about their mum being fantastic; what their mum does for them which is fantastic. For the lower ability, it was enough for them to show that they recognised the initial sounds in words such as mum and is. For the higher ability, it was expected they be able to write a sentence about their mum hearing most of the sounds in the words.

It is a really enjoyable world and sparks discussion into the development area of understanding the world as the children are able to discuss who is important to them at home and why. All in all, this is a fun, positive and easy book to read with the Reception year group and can also be related to the different curriculum subject areas easily.

I was sent a free copy of this book by the publisher.

Mums are fantastic! And in this book we'll see just how fantastic Mum can be.

This board book is a small book with rounded edges and fun glossy images inside. Inside the story is a simple one, a child tells us how fantastic his/her mum is by telling us about all the things she can do, from painting (a picture of the pet cat) to mending anything (the vacuum cleaner) and even more amazing things like tightrope walking (on the washing line). Every page features another amazing thing that Mum can do.

The illustrations are fun and well drawn although there is a dated feel to them. This book is actually a re-print from 1989 so it makes sense that the images feel dated although they are lovely and I recognise Nick Butterworth's style.

I'm not sure if children will enjoy this book or not, it's a great message about how fantastic Mums are and maybe some kids will appreciate their Mum more and think about how fantastic she is, however the book has a general dated feel to it and it just didn't feel like a book I'd have enjoyed much as a child, especially as there isn't really much of a story. Overall a nice book and perhaps those who have had this book when they were younger will enjoy it reprinted as a board book but not a book, or indeed mums might enjoy it, but I personally connected with (even though I too think my Mum is fantastic!)

I really didn’t understand this book at all. What’s the story? What’s the message? My mum can’t do any of this stuff but she’s still fantastic. Two stars because it’s nice to know everyone loves their mum, but walking a tightrope and sewing seem like very shallow reasons.

Regardless of age – this is the perfect Mother’s Day Gift!!!
A picture book that is suitable to toddlers reading their first books, it’s a beautiful way that explores all the wonderful things our mothers do for us and we take for granted. My mum is fantastic is that one book that captures how great our mothers are and giving this to your mother will tell her how much you love her!!
Wonderfully illustrated and large print – very suitable for the little tikes.

A book about a boy who says his Mom is excellent because she is an artist, she can swim, etc... but most of all she is excellent because she is his Mom.

A child raves about how awesome their mom is and all the amazing things she can do – although, it would seem, slightly exaggerated. Fun illustrations.
