At least they're primates. That was Commander Riniana Tiana's first thought when she saw the primitive--but sentient--humans of Earth.
She should be able to fit in. After all, her own species is primatal too. And she'd only come here to save them from invasion ...
But humans don't have tails. And most of them seem extremely jealous of hers!
Using the curious custom of clothing, Tiana hides her tail, passes for human and pursues the alien invaders in a desperate struggle to save an ungrateful planet.
1799 Gregorian Calendar ... None of Earth's sentient species know the seeds of their destruction just fell from space. Tiana knows what duty means.... That's why all her friends are dead. Alone on a primitive, alien world... With all her advanced technology at the bottom of an ocean... Outnumbered by deadly enemies only she can bring to justice... If she fails her mission now, another world will fall... And the Tyrant Empire will rise again. Because Earth has just been infected with parasitic monsters. They are called the niiaH ... by those not yet too frightened to speak of them. Their empire has terrorized the galaxy for more than 2,000 years. Chogan Swan is a subversive, wild-eyed, non-violent neoRevolutionary who lives in the country of the mind in the world of thoughts in the universe of ideas.
In this tiny corner of the space-time continuum, Chogan studied Philosophy and later collected graduate degrees in Business and Systems Engineering from a major US university renowned for its abundant alcohol consumption and passion for a particularly barbaric blood-sport. Go Hokies! :)
These studies, however, led to an interest in Systems Thinking and how to work together to save the world for everyone.
It won't be easy. (But then what is that's worth having?)
Philosopher, poet, prophet, revolutionary--sentients in various realities have used these words to describe Chogan. Of course, the truth is in the interstices.
The motivating force for Chogan's ... 'messages in bottles' to the multiverse ... has been succinctly captured by the words of Harlan Ellison:
"Writing is a holy chore. ... the only organism of quiet communication left to us. In the soft moments when we huddle alone with our thoughts, we turn to words ... And there--in the moment when (sentient beings) choose to reason--we can reach them.
Planetfall 1799: Parasite Dawn: Alien Invasion (book one in the Symbiont Wars series) introduces Tiana the female ship captain pursuing a vicious foe and trying to prevent the alien conquest of Earth.
The writing style makes me feel as if I am right there with her as she makes her way in an alien world.
Her Interactions with the creatures of Earth, wildlife and humans show the heart and soul of what it means to live in harmony with the universe. I love how the author writes her character. She’s strong, smart, resourceful and courageous and makes you want to be like her. Oh, and she is sexy and a real bad ass too!
The occasional humorous touches and action throughout the story balance the lush natural and historical setting. It’s not all about science and history, but the author really did some research for the details and accuracy of the world at the turn of the 19th century. I learned some things about symbiosis, and what a symbiont is. They aren’t all parasites.
I’m looking forward to the further adventures of Tiana and what is in store for the Earth.
I enjoyed the story, which mixes SF space travel with an adventure in the past of Spain's maritime history. I also like that we see a symbiont, an unusual form of life for SF heroes. This traveller is trying to kill off a species which ravages planets and life-forms; her innate behaviour is to act to benefit both herself and other species, although she protects herself pretty well. The location, off Antarctica / South America, is also a nice change.
Just a warning that some adult scenes occur and this is not suitable for children. I would read more in this series. This is an unbiased review.
This short story was sufficiently intriguing and captivating for me to read in just two days. (I just forgot to update goodreads status - sorry folks!)
The protagonist, Tiana, is a female humanoid of the species Nii, and we, the readers, are invited to witness her arrival on Earth as the pursuer of a predatory race, her transformation to a more human-like appearance and her integration with the indigenous population.
I am not a prolific reader, though should I find something I like I am someone who would follow a series. This is one tale that I will be following.
Tiana is a symbiont species, capable of mutualism with any number of compatible species, including, she discovers, humans. Her spaceship and symbiont crew crash on earth, but fail to exterminate the enemies they are perusing. Tiana ends up as the only surviving crew, and is without access to her ship, which sinks in the sea. She starts her mission to eradicate the enemy crew by making contact with a Spanish sailing ship from from about 1799.
Alien is well drawn with many abilities and lives many years. Close to immortal inhuman terms. It is trying to save Earth from a demonic alien race. Some humor, lots of action, and the different point of view from the alien keeps things very interesting.
I could not believe how great this book is! I picked it because of the tail but it turned out that that wasn't the best part of the story. Tiana's personality takes center stage in every chapter and the way the author writes about emotions and motivation and the chemical reactions involved is just wonderful.
Very interesting ideas & situations. The main character, Tiana, is surprisingly likeable with many interesting attributes. I enjoyed the story & look forward to more from this author.
Very quick read. I found it entertaining but weak. Could use a lot more character development. Part of a series. Wasn't interesting enough to want to read the other books.
