The Bombshells are back! It's now 1943, and because of Executive Order 9066, Wonder Woman is called to Arizona to help two young girls named Cassie Sandsmark and Donna Troy!
This was the first edition of the Bombshells comics from DC, that I have read. I have to admit that I picked it up because my husband bought the Black Canary Bombshell cosplay pattern for me and I wanted to know more about her in this universe. I loved how they wrote the female heroes in this series and will definitely be picking up more of these comics from Hoopla.
Granted I haven't read the original Bombshells series so this review might all be for none, but story seemed a mess with characters spilling through all over the place. It does seem to be like a spinoff or continuation series of the original but I feel like you need more than a few sentences of text to bring your audience up to speed... not a fan. And it's also making me reconsider my purchase of bombshells volume 1... if it's similar then I'm thinking I may not like it very much. Shame coz the bombshells designs are amazing.
This was my first dip into the world of the Bombshells and I was very underwhelmed. The art is vibrant enough, I guess. But the story didn't at all hook me. I'm not sure what I read and I'm not sure that I care to find out. It's okay to have a little mystery in the beginning of a series, but there has to be a hook.
"A fresh start" they said, but you always wish you started with the previous series. Oh well.
At the point the Commander accuses Wonder Woman of turning her back on America is when you know this is going to be good. I love the art and I love fierce women. Marguerite Bennett does both well and I'm excited about getting on at this jumping point. I read the first issue of the first run, loved it, and just never got the chance to jump back in.
Female DC Superheroes set in the 1940s. Sounds like a PERFECT comic book novel to me. I was instantly hooked from the first page with the gorgeous illustrations and the story. The Japanese American internment camps and dislocating Native Americans from their land was a beautiful core to tie the whole story together, and it easily fits into our contemporary time today as we question our privilege as inheritors of places that were taken with ignorance and violence. Using Wonder Woman and her allies as a conduit for this type of message was beautiful and fitting, but over the course of the first issue, my enthusiasm gradually declined. As much as I loved the diverse group of heroes, I didn't grasp a sense of who the girls were in this alternative timeline, how they work together, etc. except in their idolatry towards Wonder Woman. It started to come across as a group of DC heroes in groups collecting on the page blurring together with a lot of repetitive exposition. Every few pages or so, the illustrations morphed into a modern "cartoon" style, which became very distracting. Though its cliffhanger is typical of comic books, the story ultimately felt like it unraveled and left me questioning to check out the next issue.
I really wanted to like this. So much. I mean, it's right up my alley. Women saving the day, saving people. Woman writer that I'd read and liked before. But, it was SO confusing. I had no idea what was going on or who anybody was throughout the entire thing. It's a first issue, so I had the impression I didn't need to read the previous Bombshells. There was no set up telling me what was going on. It seemed to go back and forth in time, but I'm not even sure of that. The are was good, I definitely liked the look of it and the style that was chosen. I may look to see if the TPB comes to the library, but I won't be purchasing more.
This got really good at the end, but I will admit I like the original Bombshells series better. I liked how pertinent the storyline was to today (Bombshells always manages to do that, it’s oddly wonderful that way), but I didn’t quite connect with the characters like I did in Bombshells. I also preferred the art in the original Bombshells better.
i LOVE this new series - and i very much appreciate the steps bennett has taken to ensure she doesn't erase history. :) sauvage's art is gorgeous, as well - it's the marguerite dream team!
The Bombshells are probably my favorite next to Harley Quinn. I like the storyline and all the characters. Also refreshes me on some of my history class lessons. lol
