After the massive battle on the 59th floor, Loki Famila makes their return. However, along the way their progress is halted by the appearance of an Irregular and they make camp on the 18th floor. There, Aiz faces an unexpected and sudden reunion with a certain white-haired boy that a certain young elf couldn't be less excited to see. The other adventurers are all curious, hoping to find out more about the fastest growing adventurer in history but Lefiya has other ideas...
Ah, yes, I remember why I fell behind in this series - Lefiya. It's a shame, because she could be a good character, but Omori has gone all-in on her (ludicrous) jealousy of Bell when what really needs to happen is that she realizes that she's in love with her idea of Aiz, not who Aiz actually is.
I've got two primary complaints about this book. The first is one for the series, that Lefiya is far too much a rehash of Bell, except as a lesbian elf mage. Omori really should have tried to be more original when making her, go a different direction than another insecure up and coming adventurer with a massive crush on Aiz (which Aiz is completely oblivious to).
The second complaint is that this really felt quite poorly written. I've read to book 16 of the main series so I know he gets better, but this almost reads like an amateur fan fiction, not a professionally published book. I don't think it was a result of the translation either as the English itself never feels awkward or stilted.
Story wise it is in many ways just a rehash of a part of the main story but with some stuff retconned in to work Lefiya in. Although it does explain where an item comes from several books on in the main story.
Overall not a strong entry, but readable enough, and the situation with Lefiya and Bell near the end is an exciting scene.
This book follows the Loki familia on their return from the 59th floor and due to an unfortunate circumstance, they decided to take rest on the 18th floor in which they meet Bell Cranel. We see some form of relationship develop between Bell and Lefiya and also uncover the mysterious happenings on the 18th floor. While this book doesn't cover the fight with Irregular Monster Rex Goliath on the 18th floor, more interesting stuff happens. And an indication we will be seeing more of Lyu Leon in this series.
What a nice surprise. Really enjoyed this volume. It felt like a companion book for volumes 4 and 5 of the main series! And there was also a nod to volume 10 explaining how certain items came to be in possession of certain characters (no, I won't spoil). Like the main series, as the volume number increases, so does the number of characters. And the author doesn't shy away from changing the point of view of the story to several of them along the book.
very solid like a lot of the "Danmachi" series. I've been increasingly liking this side series more than the main series which is kinda strange considering how much i liked the first 3 books of the main series. It is just awesome to seem Aiz's growth and change through Bells influence, it would be nice to see some of that in the main series. Can't wait for the next one
This volume disappointed me in how much it just retold events we already saw in the main series but then went on to just insert a major event that we should have known about and seen in main series. I feel the author is almost making the two incompatible.
A very interesting volume. A really fast and interesting read but surprisingly little dungeon crawling. Mostly recuperating on Level 18 and yet it brings things together nicely. I have not yet read the LN for the main series, just seen the anime and read the manga up to Vol. 10 but it certainly overlaps and does it well. I really like how I get more detail in these LN and feel like I know the character's better than from the other forms. I've read dozens of LN this year and the Sword Oratoria are easily in the best and my favorite of them. So why 4-stars? Well, just a little TOO much bathtime in this volume.
Verdict: If you know Is it Wrong this side story is great. If you don't it will still be good but you'll be missing out on some background. If you're reading Sword Oratoria and wonder if it is worth it... then YES this one is well worth the time.
