Selected Sinners MC #2

Taking the Heat

Rate this book
After serving half a dozen tours in Afghanistan and Iraq as a US Marine, Cambio Todelli - known as Toad to his MC brothers - is left with a penchant for violence and no emotional attachment between his heart and his groin. As the Sergeant at Arms for the Selected Sinners MC, Toad has one assignment and he takes it very seriously. Keeping his Brothers safe from harm at any cost. Although he stands for what is moral and justified, he admits sometimes the lines simply become blurred. In short, Toad is a walking contradiction. The descendant of a long line of prideful Italian American US Marines, he is now living a far cry from his upbringing in the Catholic church. Sydney Shephard is an orphan, and has recently lost her only sibling, an older brother, to a lifelong prison sentence. After losing her job, she is now homeless, penniless, and without any form of family or friend. As easy as it may be to do so, she refuses to lose her spirit, her spunk, or her sense of humor. After having been in multiple abusive relationships in her past, Sydney has vowed to either live a life of solitude, or find a man who will treat her as an equal. When a bank robbery goes awry, leaving Toad on one side of the bank, and Sydney on the other, Toad must make a decision and make it quick. And when Toad decides to do something, heaven help anyone who tries to stop him. AUTHOR'S Taking The Heat is a stand-alone love story. No other book is required to tell THIS tale. It does contain explicit language, sexual situations, and the intricacies of being in an Outlaw Motorcycle Club. All sexual partners in this MC Erotic Romance are over the age of 18. Standalone love story. HEA. No cliff hanger. Taking The Heat is Book II in a series of stand-alone MC Erotic Romance novels.

I'm just going to be blunt:

I didn't like this book as much as I liked the first book in the series.

description

Yes, yes, I'm awful.

I know.

But that's just how I feel.

description

In my review for the first book, I stated that I loved the author's straightforward writing style.

Well, I still do.

However, in this book, it didn't feel so much "straightforward" as it felt...somewhat preachy, if I'm honest.

description

Many of the chapters start with different character POVs, expounding the virtues, beliefs, and existential thought processes of the corresponding character.

This created an issue for me twice over.

1) Opening each chapter with this sort of constant moral rhetoric made me feel like I was being lectured about life on a larger scale...that it was not merely the character telling me the character's beliefs, but rather, a third person narrator telling me their beliefs.

That's great and all. But I have a very strong sense of myself and my own beliefs.

And I'm not reading MC biker smut to change my outlook on life or to have any moral/emotional epiphanies.

description

2) I don't mind being told who my character is...so long as I am also shown who my character is - through continuity in action, words, what have you.

But wait, you might say, there were tons of actions wherein which the characters displayed themselves.

Yes, yes.

There were.

But they were all so disjointed.

In order for me to witness and understand a character's growth and change, I have to witness and understand who that character is to being with.

And Toad and Sydney's characterizations just didn't come together for me.

And, I'm sorry, but I have to address an elephant in the room here:

The character Junior...

description

This character was a sweet black kid who couldn't stop eating Toad's BBQ and was apparently the size of a mack truck.

Oh, and he talked like this:

"You ain't much bigger'n a minute, Miss Sydney. But most white folk don't be quite as big as us black folks...I'll invite you over for some of my momma's cookin.' You'd eat like a little pig if you got a taste of some food southern food...If you're lucky enough to get a corner piece; you can get some of that baked hard cheese; and whoooeeeee, that baked hard cheese is some good eatin'."

Ummmmmm, yeah...Gone with the Wind called.

And they want Mammy back.

And don't even get me started on Junior's mother...

"This is one of my apple pies. I won the spring contest down at the river with that exact pie...And this here's a jar of my pickled eggs. They're good for a snack or to eat with a sandwich, but you need to be mighty careful, Sydney. They'll make you pass gas."

I don't need to say the Klumps called, do I?

Now, I'm NOT trying to get into a discussion on anything race related here - that's not why I am mentioning this and, in my opinion, that was a nonissue for the author - my point is merely that it was hard to read both Junior as his mother as characters and not caricatures, due to their over the top..."linguistic style."

Other than that, I did enjoy this book.

I just didn't love it like I love book one.

And it's not because I didn't get it, because I did.

I just thought it could have come together a little more fluidly.

I'm looking forward to Otis' book next.

I struggle with writing this review, not because the book is bad, because it is so good. It touched so deep. So, here I go trying to write a review to do this book justice and not let this book down.

Toad, is a complex character. To say he is complicated would be putting it mildly. He is hard or soft and not much in-between, he is either one or the other. He is misunderstood by those that don't know him, but those that do, see both sides and understand him, love and care for him, and don't want to see him fall into the hard side of despair from his military past, of which some feel he could.

Sydney, puppy and a shooting. Those are turning points in his life. With him fighting PTSD, going to counseling and still having a hard time dealing, when Sydney walks into his life, he is beginning to realize he wants more, then a tragedy happens and it was like something finally, FINALLY CLICKED!

Normally, I would go on and say a lot about Sydney. What I will say here is with her background, she fit Toad. It worked. They are two broken people coming together to make a whole.

A story, teaching us something about never judging what we don't know. About compassion, about love, on more than one level. Friendship, family, blood or not, and how knowing when someone has your back and you have their's can make so much difference whether they are living or passed...

The Hildreth writing style was there to always give us a chuckle along the way as well as a tear at the end. Yeah, I cried...5 teary stars on this one! :)

5 UNBROKEN stars

This is the second book in the Selected sinners MC series featuring two remarkable characters: Cambio Todelli aka Toad and Sydney Shephard.
Two „broken“ people on so many levels and shades that we see through their interwoven lives while we reveal their story and hope for them to become UNbroken.

Cambio Todelli is an ex marine who served several tours in Afganistan and Iraq and was honorably discharged with commendments and medals BUT that left him in his own private hell of survivor’s guilt and being hard on himself sinking slowly into the emotionless vaccum and demonstrating it through the sexually detached intercourse. He’s extremely loyal and his position in the MC Selected sinners places him as the Sergeant at Arms in the role of his brothers’ protector , keeping them safe from harm at any cost. Their bond is strong. Even as Toad takes upon himself alone to play out somewhat as a God’s executioner which he justifies with a clear sense of right and wrong in his eyes.

Sydney Shephard is a heroine I was looking forward to meeting. She was bold, spirited with spunk and sassy witt never faltering from her own path of self-preservence. Being an orphan , having her brother taken away in prison for a lifelong sentence, she had no one on her side. Having lived through few abusive relationships made her resilient in stating her attitude and never backing down again. It’s either the equal way or no way. She has a difficult life and “downs” are just pouring in on her - losing her job, she’s homeless, penniless, and without any form of family or friend.

The unconventional meet between Toad and Sydney plays a turnaround in both of their lives.

Again the story and the characters are perfectly combined and interlined through stages of gradation.
It’s hard to keep them apart without breaking the magic line that binds them, so I will follow them both as they are connected and combined…

Cambio Todelli/Toad was a complexed hero, a man with layers and yet a man who shadowed himself as an aftermath of self guilt. We are following his re-building and self-redemption through his actions of loyalty and sacrifice as it is his job and duty to protect and keep safe. BUT his emptiness effective after the war turmoils and awaking his own demons keeps him at bay and detached from people even his brothers. In this stage his mind works on a sub-level of awareness of his own immortality and emptiness which evoked these feelings in me…
that I was able to express through these lyrics:

 photo e7ac781a-4520-46cb-962d-96e5fafe27c9_zpspxj5vl1x.png

"Dust in the wind" by Kansas

The moment when Sydney enters Cambio’s life sets a slow change of events between them, from acquaintance towards friendship and finally to lovers, he breaks the pattern of self-preservation on shallow existence and he begins to LIVE; another life altering moment of self sacrifice with a sense of paying his dues, wakes Cambio "the fuck" up and:
“It made me want to live life instead of just existing…
“I’ve decided I want more out of life…starting now. I want to kiss you.”

At this point Cambio and Sydney feel this:
”I just really like you” – Toad
“I passed that stage a long fucking time ago.”- Sydney

The next stage peels off one more layer of his protective distinct shell making him want to see beyond the shell. Tear the walls down.

and he deepens the notion of awakening feelings towards Sydney. He’s straight forward and he doesn’t leave anything unspoken or unresolved. Sydney is the one that feels all of it in more overwhelmed mode since she was deprived of it from a very early age. She is keen and eager to take it all at once but is holding it back and letting Cambio set the pace.
”I think I’m falling in love with you, Sydney.”
“I passed that stage a long fucking time ago.”

Another layer in changing is peeled off, and it is combined with the dealing of each other’s broken pasts…
They are united in its existence as a mere presence at this point and the act of closeness puts these two into the healing whelm of co-living and acceptance.
”As individuals, we’re both broken. I think together, maybe we’ll make a complete, unbroken us.”

 photo b06c664e-ea08-422e-a4a9-76ac0b3f87c9_zpsamiayw63.jpg

The passion between them is undeniable and Toad has re-opened himself letting Sydney in to capture his tormented, half-broken soul, tearing down the walls of detachment he’s replaced it with the fulfillment of belonging and patched up emptiness.
”I love you”, I groaned. She opened her eyes as she fought to catch her breath, “I passed…” “That stage…” “A long fucking…” “Time ago, “ she gasped.

Impressive characterization of both H and h and I couldn’t help myself entering their world without placing me right in the center of their growing healing love through passionate, candid and straight forward notion of belonging.

Just simple wow.

For me this is definitely the best book in the Selected sinners series , so far.

The copy of this book was generously given to me by the author himself in exchange for an honest review.

Cambio Salvadore Todelli aka Toad is a former Marine raised as a good Catholic boy with morals and three generations (father, grandfather, great grandfather) of role models to emulate. He sees things as black and white, good vs. evil but he has his own standards for what meets those requirements. He feels things deeply and wants to save the innocents in the world. He has no compunction about hurting or killing if the person has done something really unforgiveable like a child molester. But then he sheds tears over an innocent puppy abused and killed by a degenerate animal abuser. He suffers survivor’s guilt as the only survivor of a fight that took out all of his unit.

Sydney is homeless. A victim of the foster system and her only brother imprisoned for a crime he did not commit, she has hit rock bottom. In a twist of fate, Toad saves Sydney from a bad situation and offers her a job and a house to rent. Sydney doesn’t focus on all of the bad things she has faced in her life, she kind of like the girl that takes lemons and makes lemonade. She’s a strong heroine who feels comfortable in her own skin. There is an attraction between the two from the beginning but the author takes time to develop the relationship and doesn’t slam us with insta-love or insta-lust.

The opening scene is kind of shocking but once you get past that, the characters and the story line is great. The prose is something you don't usually find in most biker/MC books. It’s very different, unique and it left me still feeling and thinking about the book even after I finished it. The author includes so much about life choices and how our path is fixed by God. Really surprised me how the author effectively included so many deep philosophical spiritual issues while writing about
a bad ass, alpha MC member who wants to hurt the evil but save the innocent. The story is more about falling in love, human weaknesses than about a lawless MC. No cheating and a HEA.

Another thing I loved about this book is the humor and the laugh out loud conversations between these guys. Biscuit is the ultimate practical joker and wrung many laughs out of me. I think I fell in love with Otis and can’t wait to get a story about him. Axel continued to crack me up with his funny, sarcastic admonitions to his crew.

You don't have to read book 1 in the series to read this one, but I recommend that you do because it is also an excellent book. Both of the books in this series are on my re-read shelf. Some very interesting characters in this book A-Train, Ripp and Shane are from the Boxer series and are now on my TBR list.

This book, in some respects, takes off where Book I left off. Book I was told as seen through the eyes of Axton, the VP of Selected Sinners MC.

This book is Book II, a stand alone, and reading Book I is not necessary (although it is an entertaining read).

Cambio Todelli, aka Toad, is an American Italian coming from a long lineage of US Marines. After serving many tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, he returns from the war and ends up Sergeant at Arms for the Selected Sinners Motorcycle Club.

Suffering from PTSD, Toad realizes he is a walking time bomb. Although early on we can see his humility and humanity, it takes some time to see there is actually a very respectable man within the limit of his war-torn mind.

He's kind, considerate, loving, and caring.

Unless you're a woman, or you cross him.

He really has one major concern with women, he can't 'perform' unless the sex includes violence, or BDSM elements.

But he knows this.

At the beginning of the book, we are introduced to a full-fledged BDSM scene where he struts his stuff. During this scene, he admits without the aggression, sex would be impossible.

Nothing scares him, which makes sense based on what he's seen and done, but his problem is that it scares away every woman he meets.

A strange series of circumstances bring him next to an adult orphan who is homeless and jobless, Sydney.

The softer side of him emerges, and he begins to wonder what a life may be like with her. He realizes it can only be a pipe dream, because she shares with him how she will not be with anyone who doesn't respect her and/or treat her like an equal.

Toad begins to daydream with the 'what if's' and 'why not's' about Sydney, the homeless orphan.

I will say although Sydney has less than nothing, she's as strong of a female lead is I've seen in a LONG time. There are a multitude of women (and men) who can learn a lot from her sniplets of wisdom and her view on life.

The book progresses at a fast pace, and tells one hell of a tale of a US Marine who yearns to be 'normal' again, but realizes it will take something close to a miracle to allow him to once again live life within what most people perceive as acceptable limits.

An eye opening tale of War, hell, heaven, and love. Although there was no ugly crying, there are several places that will make you choke down your next breath and have your eyes fill with a gallon of happy tears.

And the ending is sooo worth the wait of the 90k words which precede it.

A true must read for the Erotic Romance, MC Romance, or Military Romance lover...

This book made me THINK

This is review #2, because review #1 disappeared. GRRRRR.

Cambio Todelli, "Toad" is a former US Marine who now rides with the Selected Sinners, 1%er MC. We caught a glimpse of Toad in Book I. Book II doesn't necessarily take off where Book I left off, but for the most part, it does.

Upon returning from the war, Toad realizes he's different than before he left. He suffers from PTSD and "Survivors Guilt". In an effort to keep himself convinced everything he did in the war wasn't "evil" he maintains a rather evil posture back in the USA. This convinces him what he did 'over there' wasn't necessarily bad.

Additionally, he attempts to convince himself that generally speaking, he's an all around good guy, so he's constantly trying to help people who he sees as less fortunate or down on their luck.

His deceased Grandfather, who he was extremely close to, advised him to help those who aren't able to help themselves.

Toad, in short, is a walking contradiction.

Not necessarily a Jekyll and Hyde personality, but he'll be as sweet as the most romantic man on earth one minute, and (for instance) go perform the club's evil the next. In his mind, as long as he can justify both actions, he's overall doing God's will.

I must say at first, I enjoyed seeing Toad's "bad" side, and learning his inner thoughts. I had my reservations as to who he "really was", but when the "real" Toad emerged, I was shocked and absolutely pleased.

I held my breath, so to speak, waiting for the axe to fall.

The ancillary characters in this book, as always with Hildreth, are absolutely second-to-none. Biscuit is a freaking Riot. Axton and Otis are back in full form, and Axton is, as he was in Book I, the take no shit from anyone President. Otis is the most soft hearted member of the bunch, or so it appears. Otis and Toad are best friends, so there's some time with them attempting to figure out women, foes, life, and so on.

The female lead in the book is introduced early on, and she's probably one of the best I've read in ages. An orphan, homeless, penniless, and without any form of family, Sydney still keeps her chin up, and her attitude in the right place.

She never faltered or wavered from who she was. Unlike Avery (In Book I) who adjusted her personality to please Axton, Sydney is a take me or leave me type who maintains that posture. This was nice. She said, "here's who I am, and I'll accept this and not that...", and there she stood.

I loved this about her.

An odd event brought these two together, and they became friends. A much more odd event brought them even closer.

I must say, for me, this book exceeded my expectations for what I believed was "next". Toad proved to be an extremely complex character who was a pleasure to try and figure out. In the end, there wasn't much left to the imagination as far as who each of the characters were, and where they will remain.

The best of HEA's as far as I'm concerned.

A must read for the Military Romance or MC Romance lover.

Okay, I really don't normally take a lot of time anymore to write a long review. Busy, busy but this author sure as hell warrants my waxing poetic's on this one.

I had the pleasure of reading book 1 a few weeks ago and as my review stated was "pleasantly surprised". Thankfully the author was kind enough to advise me that book 2 was available......so off I popped on Amazon and clicked happily.

Here's where I begin my accolade.....

Dear God, what an AMAZING author !! He in my opinion writes one of the BEST MC series ever. The stories are so bloody funny, gripping dialogue, wrote from both the male and female POV (which is one of my personal favorite ways of reading a story. I get to see progression of the story and the viewpoints from his and her mindsets).

However, I digress, what makes these books so thoroughly gripping is the amazing insight the author gives each character. I really do not want to spoil these books for you. What I will say is that I would just URGE you to trust me and give them a go.

Not blowing my own trumpet but to say I have read thousands of books probably is not an exaggeration. Unfortunately, as much as I ADORE MC books they can get so predictable. All the guy's are hard asses, man-whores, 1%, with attitudes that scream "I'll f**k you up for crossing me".And the women....sheesh don't get me going on some of those chicks. They either start off hard cases with a "I ain't taking your crap" attitude, which quickly wilts like a dead flower when their libido kicks in. They spend countless portions of the book pining for the guy and eventually become friggin' door mats waiting for their tatted up guy's to make up their minds and decide if they want them or the other p**sy. Christ, not withstanding the fear they should be having about contracting STD's, have some pride and stop settling for scraps....pathetic. While I am on a role, the other 50% of the MC books I have read have a guy "hooking up" with a girl that could be they daughter or are their own daughter/niece's BF or their fellow MC brother's VERY YOUNG relative....nasty.

Can you see how I have become really disheartened by MC books. Moving on from my trip down memory lane. Thank the lord Scott's books don't touch that crap....love ya Scott for that !!

Yes,the MC guys in these books are hard assess, however they are also man enough to show their emotions when it is warranted. Amen brother !!, that's the real world, guy's can have a soft side its not a sin *snickers to self here as the MC group is called the Sinners*.
Continuing.....the leading ladies are wonderful yes they are vulnerable women in one respect or another, but they are their own women and don't allow their hoo-ha's to rule them......Right on sisters !!!.

I found myself yet again laughing my head off, smiling like a complete weirdo to my kindle and *swallow* choking up at tender moments. The supporting characters are fabulous, Junior and Bee....perfect !!. God I desperately hope Scott writes a book for Otis, Biscuit, Corn dog (NOT WITH SLOAN or ANY OF THEM FOR THAT MATTER - PLEASE SCOTT !!!!!!)

PLEASE FELLOW GR BUDDIES IF YOU LOVE MC BOOKS AND HAVE NOT READ THIS SERIES TRY IT. I CERTAINLY HOPE I GET TO READ MORE !!!

5 Absolutely in AWE Stars from me.

Well done Scott !!! Keep these babies coming x

I'm sorry to say that this book just didn't work for me for multiple reasons.

First, the BLATANT RACISM. The writer wrote a supporting character like he must think a character straight off the plantation in the 1800's would speak and act. The dialect used was so offensive, as was the "simple" level of intelligence he christened the main African American character with, that I almost DNF'd the book.

“Just cleaned the kitchen and I’s going to eat me some lunch, Mr. Toad. Worked me up a powerful hunger, we was busier’n a bunch of bees at lunchtime,” he grinned.

“That’s zactly what I’m sayin’ Mr Toad. A three footer’d fall over fo sho. So I’s using the brain God gave me to lay it down flat so we don’t have us a meat wreck.”

“So, I pulls me a rack, fills the order, and sends ‘em out of here right fast. But when I looks down at the prep table after Miss Sarah was gone, ole Mr. rib was gone too. I remember thinkin’ at the time I musta ate him and clean forgot. But seein’ him layin’ there now, I know I done made me a mistake, Mr. Toad. I sure nuff did, didn’t I?”

I lived in the Deep South for 7 years until last summer, and I have NEVER heard anyone speak in that manner. The dialect and the implications that the character was mentally challenged.... I'm not sure offensive is a strong enough word. As if this character didn't have enough issues, the author spent a significant time fat shaming him as well, writing multiple scenes where the character couldn't control himself around the food he was in charge of serving in the BBQ restaurant he worked, to the point he was eating through the profits. Even though this character needed the job help support his mother and siblings, the poor, fat simpleton just couldn't help himself.

The second biggest issue I had after the racism, was the writing overall. This writer doesn't give the reader a chance to uncover nuances in his characters or story... he beats his points home with a sledgehammer. Instead of developing his characters through actions and dialogue, the characters constantly tell the reader how they are supposed to think/feel about them. So much Tell, not enough Show.

I’d classify this book as Romance-Light. The H & h don't even kiss until 72%. Which is fine if the author spends the time developing relationship tension and UST, but that was not the case. The couple went from barely knowing each other to "in love". Yeah. The sex scenes were, well…. weak. I would recommend the author spend some time reading different books in the genre to enrich his "naked time" writing because hot, they were not. They weren't even dirty. Mechanical is a good word to describe them.

I do applaud the author for tackling a story about a veteran and portraying some aspects of life after war. The time the H spent grappling with the definition of evil and meandering down an existential road musing about life after war and the effects of PTSD on his life felt true to point, if not a bit heavy handed.

Merged review:

Damn, with the way this book started out - I was wondering where
the heck it was going to go.  That was
one sex scene I had never read before!
You may start off the book not really caring for Toad, actually I'm
pretty sure of it - but that will be short lived.  You will grow to love the man that he truly
is, deep down - the true giver and compassionate man that he is.

Then you will meet Sidney and totally admire her ability to
persevere through what she's been dealt with in life.  She doesn't pity herself, and circumstances or expect
handouts.  Nope, she works for what she
has, makes the best of all of it - and in the process makes others around her
be better.

Toad and Sidney, both broken people, are beautiful together -
perfectly matched, and watching their relationship grow, felt believable and
not rushed.

I'm so in love with this series.
I just enjoy all the main and secondary characters in the story - they
have so much personality and even if they have small roles, they have a great
impact.  But, I think the main reason for
my enjoyment of this series is mostly due to Scott's ability to make you feel
and think with his writing.  The words of
inspiration he writes and weaves into the story - that will somehow pertain and
reflect in your own life and circumstances, always leave me thinking and
feeling.  I'm totally hooked.

audio reread 12/5 -12/7 2016

I originally read this over a year ago. I don't know how I could have forgotten that sex scene with the other woman. She was never seen or heard from after (in fact she moved on to another biker the same day ). The change in Cambio (Toad) in this story was remarkable. When I thought back to the story, I knew I had liked it, but I hate detailed sex scenes with other women. When that slapped me in the face right out of the gate, I was like "WTF".....but Cambio was great with Sydney and turned out to be a good hero. I will say that once he met Sydney, he was not with anyone else, even when they hadn't become a couple yet.

Each chapter opened with deep philosophical banter that led back to the story - wasn't my favorite. I know it was to get a deeper look into Toad and Sydney's thoughts but that was just OK for me.

I loved that this story mixed with the characters from the Undefeated Series (Shane Decker and Tripp....love them)

No epilogue at all which is a bummer for me. Having read the entire series, I know they will pop up in future books, but I'm disappointed in the lack of epilogue. As I've said before, epilogue are a must for me. I need to know about marriage and babies...

Based on the OW sex scene and lack of epilogue, this probably wouldn't have been a 5 star for me if this was my first time reading it. However, as I said before I don't change my ratings after the fact. I do love the Selected Sinners and plan to listen to every one of them. (if memory serves me correct, the stories get better and better with each book.....I guess I will see...or should I say, hear)

From the first page, this book grabbed me by the feels. By 2% I was grabbing the tissues, at 4% I was fanning myself. Whoa!

Emotional rollercoaster photo emor_zpskl9qinx7.gif

“I have since left the war, but the war has never left me. I doubt it ever will.”

Toad is a man surviving in spite of his past. As a six tour combat veteran of the US Marine Corps, he suffers from a severe case of PTSD; the symptoms of which affect every facet of his life. Cutting himself off from family and his life before the war, he lives for protecting his brothers as the Sergeant at Arms of the Selected Sinners MC.

“I was a true take me or leave me type of woman, and there was no place in my life or my routine to try and be someone or something I wasn't.”

Life hasn't been kind to Sydney. After her parent’s murder/suicide, she became a victim of the foster care system. Then her only family, her brother, is sent to prison. She would give anything for the normalcy most people take for granted. To Sydney -- a woman who is jobless and living out of her car -- paradise is a steady job, a roof over her head, and food in the fridge.

How can two people so utterly broken by their pasts find a way to make a future?

I've said it already, but I'm saying it again. The beginning of this book is A-MAZ-ING!

Toad’s back story at the beginning of the book completely wrecked me. Admittedly, it’s an emotional subject for me, as my husband is a Marine Gulf War Veteran. Even so, it’s hard not to swim in that emotional sea right along with Toad. The author does a great job of getting you into Toad’s head-space by showing you his history, rather than telling you. It makes what comes next even more powerful.

What comes next? I've got two words for you.

Saran Wrap.

Yes, Saran Wrap. Let’s just say there’s a scene in this book involving Saran Wrap that will have you looking at that kitchen staple in a whole new light. Holy Hell was that HOT! Don’t judge me, people!

 photo fanning_zpswpt6y8zx.gif

The rest of the book follows the slow, natural progression of Sydney and Toad’s relationship, while introducing us to some hilariously lovable secondary characters along the way. Junior and his momma, Shirley -- and, of course, Otis -- are my favorites. They injected bits of lightness into the serious tone of the story.

For me, the beginning and end are where this story truly shined. There did seemed to be an imbalance between the amount of introspection and dialog, which at times slowed the pace, particularly in the middle. However, Sydney and Toad’s journey held me riveted.

Where other MC series seem to demonize bikers, Scott Hildreth has created an MC series that humanizes them. It’s so refreshing, and the reason I like this series. On top of that, the characters in this book are so well-rounded and three dimensional it’s impossible not to root for them to find a happy future.

I can’t wait to see what the next book brings. Otis, maybe? Hey, a girl can hope, right? Otis is the MAN!

Taking the Heat (Selected Sinners MC Romance Book 2)

I like the simplicity of the story, nothing much is going on but its still interesting enough to keep me going. The story centers more with Toad and his joiurney in overcoming his PTSD. Though I felt that the story was unfinished.. Toad made a great deal about his performance in bed but he never opened it up to Sydney, what if Sloan just came to visit then 💥.. Another thing I felt unresolved was Sydney’s brother, what happened to the case? 🤔 I hope that on the next book we will be able to get some answers 😊

Overall, this is an okay book. Oh, there were also the secondary characters that will entertain you and then we have Ripp, A-Train & Shane. 🤤🤤🤤

Next is Otis 😏

I was a ball of mixed emotions about this story, I finished last night and feel asleep thinking about what I would rate it, last night I felt that it would have to be a 3.5 maybe a 4 star rating. There were things in this story I did not agree with and actions by the characters that did not sit well with me. As you can see I changed my mind. This change came early this morning when I woke up, thinking about my dad. My dad was one of the BEST men I have ever had the privilege to know and he had a standing rule in his house no discussions at his table about politics or religion. He felt very strongly that something’s were no one else’s business and that no one needed to defend his or her beliefs to anyone. The thoughts of my dad this morning storta right sized me to the emotions I was feeling from this book. And reminded me that most of the problems that come in front of me are of my own making.

Mr. Hildreth did an amazing job in portraying a VERY thought provoking story revolving around extremely complicated and intense characters. Right from the beginning there were clues to the depth of the characters and at the same time he challenged you to grow as a reader in stepping out of your comfort zone and not judge. Judgment was one of the things I had a hard time with in this story, for I have a different understanding of the concept of judgment. In my opinion we all judge, it is a FACT!! We judge people on whether or not they will be someone we can trust, enjoy time with, or simply stating if they are happy or bitchy. I do not see judgment as a necessarily a bad thing, it only becomes harmful when you put judgment into action and condemn someone or something. I know I make judgments daily. What I try very strongly to not do is condemn, even characters in a novel. Thanks Pop, for the reminder that everyone has shit they have been through and they do not answer to me….
This brings me to Toad, Cambio Todelli, ummm, yeah, he and I had quite a few one sided debates, while I read this story. He challenged me as a reader; at the same time he was the character that reminded me that I have no right to push my beliefs or opinions on anyone. I cannot possible understand Toad’s journey, what he has experienced and I must remember that he is not mine to fix!
Mr. Hildreth did brilliant job in combining growth in his characters at the same time letting them stay true to themselves as individuals. One of the first growth moments in Toad that truly touched me was when Sydney read the below note…

And find her he did…. Sydney is my new favorite female lead character that Mr. Hildreth has created; I can truthfully say I would like to be Sydney when I grow up…

The above quote is one of the many things I admired about this character. She was a beautiful person inside and out. I loved how open-minded and compassionate she was and how even though she had opinions on Toad she did not let those thoughts rule how she treated him or anyone that she came in contact with.

As with any Hildreth novel I love the outstanding auxiliary characters and two of my favorite where Junior and his mother Shirley… They reminded me of the caring and welcoming people that came before me when I first moved to TN almost 16 years ago… Below is something that Junior’s mother taught him and he shares with Sydney. This quote was profound for me; it reminded me that my back is covered at all times, even if I can’t feel it.

I cannot forget to mention my favorite faceless character, the Selective Sinners MC. The author did magnificently at informing us of new intricacies in the life of a 1%er. Mr. Hildreth did it in such a way that we are seeing them as more then just outlaws but humans. Humans that live by their own code, who trust few but when that trust is given there is nothing they won’t do for each other. At this time I need to mention the wonderful humor that was added to the story… read the book you will understand. A side note---Biscuit LMAO – I shouted to him as I read “NOOOOOO, do not get sucked in!!!!”

Whenever I write a review I end up revisiting the notes and highlighting that I did while I read. This book had so much that got me to take note of and highlight that I could not possible mention everything in this already long winded review, please take my word for it, you will not only enjoy another Hildreth novel, you will be thinking about for days afterwards, at least I will be. Excellent job, Mr. Hildreth!! This one reminded me that everyone you meet is fighting a battle you nothing about. Be kind. Always. That’s it, that’s all I got….

I was given and ARC of this title for an honest review.

For the first time in my life, I scrolled through Goodreads prior to writing, it was difficult for me to do, and I seriously thought twice about it. I had heard about the controversy from some readers surrounding one of the characters in this book, and as I didn't experience that same upheaval when I read it, curiosity honestly killed this cat.

First, I want to go on record, saying that I as a blogger, appreciate anyone who is willing to give their honest opinion. That says a lot about you the reviewer if done so in an objective manner to assist other like-minded people in choosing a new read. I also want to go on record stating that I respect each and every opinion when given constructively, and I commend those that do so.

This book, the second in The Selected Sinners MC Series from Author Scott Hildreth was for me, about second chances, and how one chooses to act on the unfeigned miracle they've been given. Plain and simple. The chance to make the decision to give it up to happenstance or the powers that be, and decide what path you will take from this day forward. Will you be a reflection or a shadow of your past, or will you simply let go, and let be? Life is hard. Sometimes we make the right choice, but more often, we just mess up. No matter if the outcome is based on the best intentions, inevitably that is where we find ourselves. We spend so much time looking backwards and second guessing albeit deliberately, or just our own inner demons seeping into self doubt. We are our own worst enemy.

Personally, I think Taking the Heat showcased some amazing characteristics of the human mindset as a whole. Not only our perceptions of ourselves, but just how those notions affect each of us in a truly base way and seep unknowingly into the fibers of all interactions in our lives. The scenes in this book may be uncomfortable for some. The characters in this book and this series are not in any way easy to swallow. Yet, that's kind of the point. That's what this author does, he makes you a little unsettled, because whether you know the intended character or not, he just writes it that way. This is a story that has uncensored representations of people and their uncomfortable circumstances in life. Sometimes people make us uneasy, life makes us insecure, it happens. If we are truly honest with our selves, we know this to be an undeniable truth.

To address the character of Junior, I understand that this depiction made some readers apprehensive, and again I want to applaud you for voicing that. I for one, didn't see it that way. I saw an amazingly lovable boy, in a man's body. A true kindred spirit with a genuine heart. His dialect and prose is in no way the majority, but it was far from the minority in my experiences of life. He wan't offensive and not at all far-fetched, he was written as the author intended him to be. He was a integral voice in this narrative. He had a specialness about him that made him pure and wise beyond his years and cognizance . His love and acceptance helped not only the characters in the book deal with things they had no inkling they needed to deal with, but… he helped me to actually get me. Junior made me tear down my walls of misconceptions and preconceived notions. He caused me silence the voices of society and provided me a "Winnie the Pooh" like quality to life. Things are only as hard as you make them. Don't sweat the small stuff, because in the end, it's all just small stuff. Each of us needs a screaming tree, maybe then, we'll accept each other for the sake of acceptance and human kindness. He was the glue and moral fiber in a story where normal just wasn't normal.

To me, Junior was the shining star in a tapestry of darkness and pain.

I loved this book, for reasons I've gathered that most will not get. Look beyond the words, peel back the layers and let the characters resonate with you. Only then, will you begin to understand.

I whole-heartedly recommend not only this book, but this series. I can't wait for all that is Otis to unfold.

As with most things in life, reading is subjective.

I see many rereads in my future.

I liked this story much more than Book 1. I also enjoyed the ex-Marine and boxer MC buddies from Austin, so I have purchased Book 1 of that series.

That being said, not a 5 star book for me. There are a fair amount of typos. The cover looks like this guy is a total wimp despite the planked musculature. Straighten up the bent head, and I would have a totally different reaction... yes, covers matter to me, and a biker on the cover would be better.

I was engaged through the action parts. The author needs to read some *really good* smex scene writers to make those parts better in his writing. Lots of names escape me right off the bat, but Madelaine Montague/Kaitlyn O'Connor books mostly do very well at capturing pull-out-your-vibrator love scenes.

The beginning scene in the book grossed me WayTF out! I just can't equate someone being so cold and violent with a woman, become the Toad at the end of this book, even if the abusee was Sloan, a total whore.

I will still read a book 3 in this series... hopefully about Otis.

I read the first in the Selected Sinners and liked it so I immediately one clicked Taking the Heat. I liked the first book, and this one, in some ways, was even better. It’s funny and heart-breaking plus it’s so full of sayings and pearls of wisdom that I think SD was channelling his inner Yoda when he wrote it (minus the backward speak of course, although for geeks like me fun that would’ve been). The main reason I really like this book – I loved the thought of two broken people “unbreaking” each other.

Taking the Heat brings my two favorite kinds of alpha hero together by giving me Toad, a biker who suffers from PTSD after serving umpteen deployments overseas, oh and he’s a hot Italian guy who loves his Mama. Heck yes! He’s the Sergeant of Arms for the Selected Sinners, and takes his job of keeping the club members safe seriously. He struggles with his war demons, but he is determined to win that battle.
Impossible for me to totally understand, my PTSD caused me to lack compassion in some areas, and be far more understanding and sympathetic in others. I realized I couldn’t save the world, nor did I wish to. For some reason I had attached myself to certain people and their needs, feeling tremendous guilt if I didn’t step forth and extend my hand to pull them from whatever it was they were drowning in. Sydney, for some reason, was one of those people.

Sydney Shephard finds herself alone after her only relative, her brother, finds himself locked up with a life sentence. She’s also homeless and penniless. I really liked Sydney once I got over my initial reaction to the way they met (no way it would ever happen like that in the real world). She had everything go wrong that could go wrong but kept her chin up, didn’t panic, and was funny through the whole thing. Some of the stuff that came out of her mouth cracked me up.
“You know, I’ve always said people who run are running from something. What are you running from?”

“Cellulite, high gas prices, the cops, outlaw bikers and…” I looked down at the ground and paused. “And the reality that after each day passes I don’t get a chance to redo it, live it over, or make any changes,” I said as I looked up.

Another aspect of this book that I loved was the sex scenes didn’t take themselves too seriously. I’m all for an intense smexy scene, but there’s nothing wrong with a little laughter in the bedroom too (as long as it’s not insulting anyones equipment- that would be bad and probably a deal breaker).
“Your…cock’s…huge,” I said between choppy breaths. “It feels like…I’m being fist-fucked by a midget,” I groaned.

Taking the heat also had rich side characters like the other brothers in the Selected Sinners that I hope to see more of in the future. My only issue was I could see where some could think it got too philosophical at times. The cover of this book was better than the last. Maybe for the next one, I’ll get a super sexy bike – there will be a next one, right? While I wait, I think I’ll check out SH’s fighter series.

Cambio "Toad" Todelli is a Marine who fought hard for his country and lost many brothers while serving. Being a member of the Selected Sinners MC has helped Toad find a purpose in his life again. Now that he has been voted as Sergeant at Arms, Toad will stop at nothing to protect his brothers and keep them safe.

Sydney's parents were murdered when she was a small child and she and her brother were placed in foster care. Her years growing up there were not pleasant, however they made Sydney into the woman she is today. Unfortunately, she's fallen on hard times. Her brother was set up by the ATF and sentenced to life in prison; and to make matters worse, she lost her job and has no money. Unable to pay her rent, Sydney has been living out of her car. She's alone and has no one.

The afternoon that Toad meets Sydney changes both of their lives forever. Toad is immediately overcome with the urge to protect her. He offers Sydney a job and a place to stay. Gradually, they become close friends and you can tell they have stronger feelings for each other. When Toad is involved in a serious event with the club, Sydney goes to him.

Wow. I seriously loved Toad. He's a broken man, but he has a heart of gold and has lived with some unnecessary guilt for years. Sydney is a strong woman who has suffered terribly but has never given up. Together Toad and Sydney were absolutely perfect for each other. They both needed to heal and it took them coming together to realize it was each other who could do just that. Theirs is not an instant love, but a mutual attraction that grows and becomes stronger. It’s really wonderful to watch. We get more Otis, Biscuit and Axton from the first book, plus we get a special surprise....guest appearances from A-Train, Ripp and Shane. I loved their series and enjoyed seeing them in a different setting.

This was another successful story from Scott Hildreth. It’s told from dual POVs and has a great ending. I’m looking forward to reading more about these characters and I hope to see Otis’ book next. On a final note, I’ll never look at a piece of saran wrap the same again.

I want a Toad!

I liked the first book and this book was even better. Reading about Toad was like watching him morph into the man he becomes at the end of the story. He always believed in fighting against evil and felt in taking care of justice himself if needed. He didn't just go killing people or beating them up just because. If he did anything it was justified because of their actions. Which we learned in book one with how he felt towards child molesters. Sydney enters his life at just the right moment. He gives her a choice to make and she has literally just seconds to decide which path to take. Everything happens for a reason and Toad may not look like the typical Prince rescuing the princess but he is definitely a person that can take care of business. The relationship these two form was didn't happen overnight. No insta love matches. For that I am grateful because I don't think Toad was the type to be head over heels instantly. He needed a little more convincing from beyond the grave and his brothers.

Definitely worth the time to read. You don't need to read book one to understand what is happening in this story. My only gripe is with Sydney's brother. I wanted to know more of what happened with him. Is there another story that tells us what happened with him. Did he get a new trial? Will he be released? Questions???

on Audible (free via KU)

Opening of the book did NOT work for me. Disturbed me and set a steep obstacle for me climb to like him.

Beyond that, I really disliked the male narrators voice - so this is an instance where the audio version may have also affected my enjoyment of the book.

Cambio (aka Toad) is one fucked up in the head guy - but has a huge heart of gold. So it was inevitable that he would overcome the horrid opening.

I really liked Sydney. There was little to complain about. She held it together for me until Cambio got his shit together.

Another slow burn, with him in denial. But huge circumstances bring them together. And I really loved them together. Cambrio (I just cannot use the name Toad) really was a different man with Sydney. And I loved them together. Once they got together all was great. The ending was all sugary sweetness!

☆ I received an ARC via the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you! ☆

This book definitely pushed limits and boundaries. But then again, that is the nature of author Scott Hildreth.

From the very first read I've encountered by this author, I've always felt that by going into his books, that I was going to definitely be in for something. And boy, was it.

Taking the Heat may not be everyone's cup of tea, but, it did have some essential elements and themes that everyone has or will encounter in his or her life.

From basic morals, beliefs, and the raw conundrum of the human spirit, this book has it all.

I was a bit on the fence about how things were going to be executed throughout this and the fleshing out of each character, but TTH managed to pull it off effortlessly and wonderfully.

Curious to see what's to come next in the series!!

Toad is the perfect guy for me. He's a military veteran, a sinner, a saint, a hard a$$ when he has to be, he's compassionate, loves animals, loves is brothers, but loves Sydney more. Toad is misunderstood by people in the community because of his outward appearance. But what some don't realize is that he struggles with survivors syndrome from the war. He tries his best to right all the wrongs for people. That's where the other characters come in to place.

Sydney, has been down on Her luck for a while. She accepts no hand outs though. She is a true believer in working for what she gets. She finds herself in a shady situation at a bank, when Toad walks in. Toad takes it upon himself to help Sydney out by covering for her. He hooks her up with a job and a place to stay until she can figure out her plans.

Otis, is a good friend of Toads. He is a stand up guy who Toad confides in. He's also a Sinner. Otis is the friend that everyone should have. You can be straight with him, and you can tell him things in confidence with no judgment. He's a huge teddy bear, really.

Biscuit, where do I even start? Biscuit is a joker and crap talker. He finds humor in all things. He's also a Sinner. He likes to
ruffle Toads feathers for sure.

Junior, oh my! This guy is off the charts. He works at Toads restaurant. He's another person that Toad took under his wings.
Junior quit school to help his mom take care of him and his siblings. He's a big boy. When Toad notices his food prices are going up he soon finds out why, but Toad gets creative on how he rectified that issue.

Sloan, she's a HOT MESS!

I loved how previous characters from Scott's other books came into this one. A-Train plays a big part in Toads life. So does Dekk and Ripp, along with Vee and Avery.

Needless to say, Scott Hildreth outdone himself again on writing a spectacular book!

**** ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ****

Holy crap, you can seriously get sucked into this story from the get go. The one thing that I love about Scott's writing is his characters. The depth of his characters are out standing, and his stories seem to have a mind of their own. I have read a few biker series, but this series makes me appreciate bikers more!

Ladies, you are going to love Toad. He's a former marine that has done tours in war. Let's face it, we all know that a piece of you gets left on the battlefield when you come home, if you even make it home. With that said, Toad is broken, and just trying to live day to day with what hand he got dealt. He fights with his demons everyday, and the club is his family.

Now meet Sydney, the beautiful bombshell that is down on her luck. She's had a rough past and has only one person in the world that loves her. Only thing is, they can't be around. So, she ends up broken and lost. So, when she meet Toad, and he offers to help her she turns him down. She doesn't do handouts. But these two broken souls, seem to gravitate towards each other.

One of my favorite characters in this book is Junior, omg you are going to love him! I just want to hug him and call him my squishy! He's this kid that is straight up, and tells you like it is. But he has the heart of gold! I can't wait for you to meet him.

Oh, and ladies we have some guest stars popping in that I think you will love! Ok, that's enough from me. I swear I could probably give you the story but my lips are sealed!

Scott- Bring on Otis! I'm ready!

I'm sure it is hard to accept a review from an admitted SD Hildreth junkie but here it comes. Taking the Heat is the second book in a series that just gets better and better. Not only is there an amazing love story with hot scenes full of off the chart chemistry there is a story full of character depth. Like most of his stories this one is full of reflection and revelations about life and all its twists and turns that bring you to the place you are suppose to be in life with the people who are suppose to be there sharing it with you. Scott makes you think, contemplate life, the kinds of people you want to surround yourself with and what you hope you can say about your own life when it is all said in done. I always walk away loving the characters and feeling like there is so much more life to be lived. Besides who doesn't love a hero with PTSD finding a woman who has suffered just as much in life as he has come together, fall in love in spite of everything and fix each other in an attempt at a HEA. Once again I am in awe of his genius and can't wait for the next installment, the next book, the next adventure that comes out of his mind.

Compared to the first book, I would say that this book was really tamed. The story was definitely not as excited as the first. The first few part of the book was much more boring and rush. The chemistry between Sydney and Toad were lightning fast and they got together even faster. It was unreal. However, later on, the story unveiled and the plot and relationship became much more believable.

I also started to see the different in the heroes's different and unique sexual preferences. Compared to Axton who used to hate women, Toad was a really kinky bastard... and He loved dangerous play. a real dangerous life and death play. While Axton could not get IT up unless he was absolute in control and DID not trust the woman, Toad needed his woman begged and scared. It was hard to imagine any women who could live up to Toad's sexual ways like he did with Sloan... In the end, he was the same with Axton. He realized that it was trust he needed to be with a woman so Sydney didn't have to get saran wrapped like Sloan to satisfy his need. although I don't judge anyone's sexual preferences, it was admittedly weird play for me.

Cambio "Toad" Todelli is still dealing with the aftermath of his time as a Marine. It effects him in all ways, but mostly sexually, making his tastes fall to the dark side of sex. When he happens upon a bank being robbed, he meets Sydney Shephard who is homeless and trying to find somewhere to call home. Toad gets Sydney a job and a place to stay. He knows his taste in women would corrupt Sydney but he also cant seem to stay away. The more Toad gets to know Sydney, the more he begins to see himself as the man who can protect her and that Sydney could give him something he has long wanted, peace.

In the beginning of this story, I did not know if I would be able to finish it. It was a bit too taboo for me, however it is short lived, once Sydney is introduced you are hooked. I iked this couple together, both have pasts they struggle with and I thought Sydney was sassy in her own way but had a knowledge of MC's that fit with who Toad is. Great read.

Just wow!

This book just blew me away!! Absolutely blew me away!!

I just finished reading not even a full minute ago. I think I will have a book hangover for days after this one. I need to take a deep breath before I start to write my review because I truly want to do this book justice.

I have over 3000 books and MC books are my guilty pleasure. This one however, is now on my top five list of all time favorite reads for me. Just a beautifully brilliant story.

I'll add more to this review later, but wanted anyone who reads reviews to help themselves decide if they want to read a book to know that they will not be disappointed. You really need to grab this book. I would give it 100 stars if the option was available.

Scott, you are an amazing writer with a tremendous talent. I am completely in awe.

Very entertaining MC Romance

4-41/2 stars. Another very good book from this author. I absolutely loved the H--Toad. He was just such an amazing character--perfect mixture of bad boy-good guy. The h, Sydney, is sweet, but not your totally innocent heroine. She lead a tough life, is homeless, but still grounded. Secondary characters are entertaining too, and add the right amount of interest without taking over the story. Probably my only complaint about this one, is I wish there was more interaction between The H and h. It is a romance, and you do get a nice love story. The plot line really kept me engrossed, and to be honest, I didn't realized I even felt I missed having more of the H and h until it was over. Just thinking back, I really liked the couple, and wanted to see more of the .

This was a 5 star plus many more stars! I've said it before and I will say it again I love Avery and Axton but my favorite is Toad and Sydney! this couple, this book, The author they made you feel something deep inside. As individuals, Sydney came from a rough background which made her strong plus she bring some sas! Toad he's a former Marine and he has seen war and he's dealing with PTSD and conflicts with good and evil. Together these broke people might just become fixed!

Love that this can be read as a standalone but it's a MC SERIES...you can't just read one. Scott you did great on this, another satisfied reader!

Cambio 'Toad' Todelli is an exercise in contradictions. A former Marine, he truly believes the dark actions he takes in the name of his motorcycle gang are righteous and justified. There's something so compelling about a guy that saran wraps a girl's head while doing the nasty, calmly and methodically executes a child molester, and cries when a puppy is shot to death. I think he's a swell guy.
