Nanny Connie has been taking care of children for over 30 years. Her upbringing and education gave her the tools needed to help families of all backgrounds. Now she is on a mission to share her knowledge through various projects including a nanny and parenting resource website, a product line, and a book.
Being a caregiver is in her DNA. Connie grew up surrounded by a loving extended family in Mobile, Alabama. They instilled in her a strong work ethic and a love for nurturing. Her great-grandmother, Hannah, was a well-known midwife in the area and passed her wisdom down through the generations.
Connie began working as a baby nurse for two professional parents who desperately needed help with their newborn. Through word-of-mouth, she was soon a sought-after nanny and was hired by powerhouses in the business world. From there, she became one of the most in-demand baby nurses to many different celebrities including Justin Timberlake & Jessica Biel, Emily Blunt & John Krasinski, Jessica Alba & Cash Warren, Brooke Shields & Chris Henchy and Lucy and Matt Damon.
Sorry to give this an average rating. There's some good info here, like on sleep, that I might try the next time around. I just could not get past all the celebrity name-dropping and guest quotes (from the moms, and even one celebrity chef), that reading this felt like a commercial, and now and then the choice of phrasing feels a little too heavy on the self-promotion.
To be fair, lots of sensible advice from her three decades of experience. Just that it's surrounded by fluff (maybe the editor wasn't as stringent with paring down the chatter, or organizing the ideas), and the Southern church lady tone ("Bless your heart") does nothing for me, personally. If you want emotional hand-holding and repetitive reassurance to build up your confidence as a new parent, then this has that in spades. I wanted a concise guidebook, a manual, and in here I had to skim through the anecdotes to get to just the facts ma'am.
I think first-time parents would be able to learn a thing or two from this book, but consider supplementing with other references. I highly recommend "What To Expect the First Year" by Heidi Murkoff.
This book left me really conflicted. If this book had been written 10 plus years ago I would be advocating it for all parents. My problem is that there is advice in this book that goes against current AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) guidelines. Just one example is pulling back the foreskin to clean an uncircumcised infant. This was best practice in the past, but we’ve now learned that it isn’t best and it’s recommended you NEVER pull pack the foreskin. There were multiple instances where her information was right at one point, but doesn’t meet current guidelines. On the other hand there is AMAZING advice on dealing with the emotions a new baby brings.
My advice is too go ahead and read the book, but to double check anything related to the health and safety of your infant before proceeding. Take her own advice from her section “Dealing with Advice” and comb through this book taking the good parts(because there are some great ones) and just forget the rest (because there also parts that need to be).
This book is endorsed by the likes of Justin Timberlake, Matt Damon, Jessica Biel, etc, etc etc. So you’d think it’d be amazing, right?? Well maybe if you have enough money to afford a nanny like Nanny Connie. Her tips for getting a good sleep is to have a nanny, partner, or friend take the night sleep so that you can sleep from 9pm to 5am. Or, if you can’t have that, then at least during the day so you can take a nap. Um, because everyone has that sort of support in their life, right? And if they don’t, well they can just pay for it by hiring help! Head in the sand about the problems that real people deal with, OR things that you could probably find out by taking a prenatal class or talking to a nurse.
Also, the book itself spends the entire first half talking about what to do BEFORE the baby arrives, so the title is a bit of a misnomer.
2.5 if I could. I found a few useful nuggets in there as I prepare for another baby, but I don't know if it was worth reading the whole book to find them.
This is a great book to read before you have Baby! Like other reviewers have said, it's not meant to be a reference guide, more to be read straight through like a conversation. It's like listening to a very nice older woman tell you that you are capable, you can do it, and when you have some issues, here are some easy fixes. I didn't feel talked-down-to at all, and it's just like a nice conversation. I suppose there are a lot of celebrity name-drops, but I mostly ignored them. They all read along the same lines, young couple is overwhelmed at first with Baby, and then learns some simple tricks and gains confidence. This is a great and stress-relieving book to read. I much prefer it over indexed guides about all the things that can go wrong- I have received some of those as gifts and I will save them for a guide after baby is born, but this book is just a cheerful conversation with a very experienced baby nurse, and a quick read!
Of all the parenting books I’ve read thus far, this one offered the most helpful advice; HOWEVER, the name dropping (“anecdotes”) had me rolling my eyes more than a teenager. I began skipping over them after the first one as I found them both unnecessary and unhelpful. Though, I suppose if you like the “celebrities, they’re just like us!” section of gossip mags, you’ll likely enjoy them and find support in them.
My recommendation: Buy used or borrow from a friend and skim to all the important parts.
I liked the simplicity of this book and ended up dog-earing (gasp!) a whole bunch of pages and sections to go back and refer to.
The celebrity name dropping and anecdotes did get a little old though. I think it tried to give off the impression of, "Look, celebrities! They're just like us!", but it ended up feeling more like, "Look! If you have celebrity money, you can hire someone to help navigate your first 4 months of parenthood!"
I get the feeling that Connie is a really nice lady who has taken care of lots of babies, but doesn’t have formal education on how to care for them. So much of her advice conflicts with the current standards on breastfeeding, sleep, etc. It’s an entertaining book, but shouldn’t be the sole source of info for a new parent!
Very quick read with a lot of great tips and advice! I read it as my baby turned 3 months and I wish I had read it earlier. Hopefully, when I have my baby number 2 in the future, I will definitely refer to this book to refresh my memory and practice some of the tips mentioned in the book.
I loved this book. I didn’t feel like I was being lectured by some high and mighty author but I gained so much information from it. It is a quick read and I highly recommend!
This is cute and has a lot of anecdotes about celebrities, but the information isn’t the best or the most practical. Connie herself does seem to be a really precious lady though.
Picked this on a whim, was amazed to discover how helpful and comprehensive this book is. Nanny Connie covers so many topics with no nonsense and her natural warmth.
I really feel like this book gave me a good idea of what to expect in the upcoming months. Nanny Connie’s personality shone through and made some dull topics presented elsewhere, come to life for me.
