I read this while in college a long time ago when studying to be an aircraft engineer. A very helpful book indeed for an industry plagued with mathematical formulae, this book offers a wonderful understanding of the principles of flight. Now, after over 35 years in the industry I am still recommending it to young engineers and pilots.

The author talks to you in first person using lucid language and builds up your knowledge as you go through it. It does not assume that you possess knowledge on the subject already.
It has been written (and edited by Bill Gunston)in such a manner that the reader will not only find it enlightening but entertaining as well.
I'd recommend the book to whosoever is having a hard time trying to understand or is simply interested in aerodynamics.

To write a mathematical based theory book is much easier than writing a book without formulae.
It is always better to understand the Physics of problem first and then the complicated mathematical treatment/equation becomes much more comprehensible.

Most of the Professors and students of Aeronautical Engineering lack the knowledge of Aeronautics which may be explained to a layman in simple words. They are unable to explain the thrilling and exciting field of Aeronautics without using the complicated mathematics. This dampens the interest of the student.

Kermode was a distinguished pilot and educator of Aeronautics who served the Royal Air Force.

I consider this book as the best book on aviation. Every time I read a page or paragraph of this book, the mind feels fresh and stimulated.

Flight Without Formulae offers a unique exploration of the complex principles behind how airplanes fly—yet it does so without diving into any mathematical equations. Instead, the author focuses on straightforward language and intuitive explanations, guiding readers toward a deeper understanding of flight mechanics. Typically, an understanding of aviation physics depends on advanced equations, but here, the author skillfully bypasses them altogether, making the topic accessible even to those who might otherwise feel overwhelmed by heavy calculations.

Through clear illustrations and relatable examples, the book explains why airplanes stay airborne, how control surfaces like ailerons, flaps, and slats operate, and what it all means to the curious passenger peering out the window during takeoff and landing. Despite tackling notoriously challenging subject matter, Flight Without Formulae remains both engaging and easy to follow—an impressive achievement that comes from the author’s well-structured approach and strong command of the topic.

For anyone fascinated by the science of flight, this book provides fresh perspectives without ever resorting to formulaic complexity. Every page brings to life the magic of aeronautics, connecting the dots between what we see on an airplane’s wing and the underlying principles that keep it aloft. If you’ve ever watched an aircraft ascend or descend and wished you truly understood what was happening, Flight Without Formulae will arm you with the insights to appreciate every thrilling moment—no math required.

A great book for basics in flight. But I could not gain much because I was looking for more control aspects of flight. Still the basic terms are explained in such a simple manner as if reader is a kid. Its a great book for people interested in aerospace domain.

the fact that it does not contain any formulas makes t really simple to read and understand.
