A ScatteredThoughtsandRogueWords Review. This review can also be found here.

Changing on the Fly features four M/M stories about hockey players falling in love on – and off – the ice. It includes the following stories:

1. Head in the Game by Jeff Adams - 2.5 Stars out of 5

Roger Jacobson is having a hard time getting his head in the game following his disastrous breakup, when things start looking really bad he turns to his roots for help in the form of Coach Barker. What Roger wasn’t expecting was the distraction in the form of Dylan Barker. Can Roger fix his game and his heart?

This story didn’t have any impact on me. It is a nice little unassuming tale but it lacked the depth that makes a story memorable. It’s hard to pin-point what exactly didn’t work in this story because on the surface everything works. The story has a nice premise and the writing is good but nothing about this story left an impression.

In fact on second thought, I felt like things just weren’t hard enough, I don’t know, this story needs a little bit more fight in it. Personally, I was just never that invested in these characters for their story to mean something to me. Otherwise, it is a good read but extremely forgettable.

2. Second Chance at Love by Heather Lire - 3 Stars out of 5

Zach needs a break after the crazy couple of months that see his hockey career end and see him elected as Mayor of Holiday, Vermont. He ends up in Costa Rica ready for a relaxing vacation only to find out that he is sharing his beach house with Tony, his best friend from High School. Will this surprise reunion ignite something new between these two friends?

The one thing I have to mention in regards to this story is that it features no hockey in it, like at all, which was kind of weird and technically doesn’t even feature a hockey player. It features an ex-hockey player. I kind of picked up this anthology for the hockey so that was a bit of a disappointment but then I kind of reset my expectations because even the following story didn’t have much hockey in it.

This story does have my favourite troop friends-to-lovers but it really fails to develop on it. This story is very hot and heavy and I feel like the sexual development kind of occurs at the altar of everything else (like character and story development). So when things do happen they feel a little rushed, especially in regards to that Epilogue. I personally didn’t get to know the characters enough to know for sure that they would end up like they did in the epilogue.

Overall, this is a hot and heavy quickie but not much in the way of story development.

3. Rookie Moves by V L Locey - 4 Stars out of 5

Riley and Keiffer have made it despite all odds, but now Keiffer finds himself under the spotlight. Will Keiffer be able to get a hold of his life and be able to figure out what he wants to do with his life, or will he crumble under the media blizzard?

I liked this story quite a lot. In fact, I liked it so much that I read the prequel to this one as well after finishing this one.

Riley and Keiffer make an incredible couple. At times it is hard to imagine that such a couple could actually work but then you see them interact and they click so well together that you can’t figure out the doubts you had. Of course, at the core of their relationship is balance Riley has an insurmountable amount of power over Keiffer given that Keiffer is completely dependent on Riley for everything and as of yet can’t support himself and at times that power dynamic does err on the wrong side. If things unbalance even a bit this story could be a mess but for the most part, the author has the balance between these two figured out because these two need solid boundaries between pushing and demanding.

But on the whole, I loved this story as it follows Keiffer. We see him grow into himself and finally figure out what he wants to do with his life which coupled with the amazingness of Riley and Keiffer makes for one hell of a story.

4. Secrets by RJ Scott - 5 Stars out of 5

Benji is a skater on the Colchester Colts and he is used to being chirped on for his short height, especially from Avery Lester, the defenseman for the Carlisle Rush. When Benji makes a single inappropriate comment about Avery’s ass, it has an unexpected outcome.

Avery comes to Benji for guidance, to figure out how to be a gay man in a hockey league, while Benji wants to help he also needs to guard his heart. Will Benji succeed or fail, miserably?

This story was my most favourite of the lot. I loved it, like so, so, so much.

God, it was amazing! I loved Benji and Avery so much, they like completely made my day. God these two were so adorable together and it was just so heartrending to have Benji trying to protect his heart but failing, so spectacularly. Like there was just something about Benji falling in love that had me so emotional.

Avery and Benji were amazing characters and I think the thing that really worked for their story was all that focus on hockey. Their story really tied in with Hockey as a concept and as a game and was used amazingly to further the plot.

God! This one was amazing, and I am not very good at expressing just how good it was but it was amazing. It is not only one of my most favourite stories from this anthology but this is like one of my most favourite stories ever.

Cover Art for the anthology by Jen Needles which I really liked.

4 out of 5 stars overall

Head in the Game by Jeff Adams

3 1/2 out of 5 stars

Roger & Dylan share a winter summer romance on the ice. Roger comes back to his hometown after being unable to get his game on with the NHL. He’s coaching as part of his old team’s summer hockey camp under the direction of his high school coach. Then he meets Dylan -- the same coach’s son!

Their attraction is instant, but their story takes a little more time. I enjoyed the characters and story, but felt like it was almost not enough information and too many details all at once. The story flowed well enough, but it bounced back and forth between the 3rd person POVs a little too much for me. It seemed like we would just get started with Roger’s perspective and be thrust right into Dylan’s.

Overall the story was done well and I enjoyed the novella.

Second Chance at Love by Heather Lire

4 out of 5 stars

Tony and Zach were best friend their entire lives until Zach joined the NHL and left Tony behind without so much as a goodbye. Tony became a successful lawyer and Zach was forced to retire early from the NHL. They both need a vacation and “accidentally” end up at the same vacation home.

I enjoyed this story because it had just enough angst to keep me reading, but the relationship was fairly easy and the guys were very likable. It flowed well and I was sad when it was over because I wanted more of their story. I liked that Tony was completely comfortable and didn’t really force much on Zach, but was still determined to bring him out.

Rookie Moves by V.L. Locey

4 out of 5 stars

Of the 3 stories so far, I would say this was my favorite. It had a lot more “meat” to it than the others do. I think the characters feel real and the story tests your heart. Riley is a hockey superstar who rescued Kieffer off the streets and from a life of prostitution. Their relationship is pretty good from the inside, but those on the outside have harsh things to say about them.

I loved that the couple wasn’t worried about outside appearances. I loved the ending and how some of the “extras” came around to a better way of thinking. Riley’s family (though brief in their appearance in the book) were great people. I just really liked this story and feel like it is a must read.

Secrets by RJ Scott

4 1/2 out of 5 stars

The stories just got better as the anthology continued. This story about Avery and Benji was full of everything a good romance is full of.

I liked that the time jumps weren't over exaggerated and yet we injure time had elapsed. I liked that Benji didn't think he knew what he wanted but he realized he did all along. I liked that Avery was brave. The story just made the anthology that much more complete.

Yes, I'm one of the authors. However, I'm also a lover of hockey romance so there were three other stories I had to read.
- Heather's made me happy to see a hockey player get his second chance.
- V.L.'s made me cry because Kieffer's story touched my heart.
- RJ's was a delight as two players newer to the sport found their chance at love.

I'm honored to have a story alongside these three wonderful ones.

All four of the stories in this anthology were so well written!
Head in the Game by Jeff Adams
Second Chance at Love by Heather lire
Rookie Moves by VL Locey
Secrets by Rj Scott
They all have hockey in common obviously but they also start you off with one of the main characters needing something in his life. Some kind of connection, understanding, love and acceptance. They all get what they need with the one who is truly meant for them. In return they give what the other needs as well. Another huge plus is, that all of the couples in this anthology, all have a support system that they thought they might never have. People who had their back, stood up for their love. Whether it be a team mate, team, coach or parent. In the end they all found what they needed, whether they knew they needed it to begin with or not. Let's not forget the amazing sex these main characters in these stories had but it all stemmed from a growing love, whether it was obvious at the beginning or not.
Please buy this anthology. The money goes to a great cause and you will thoroughly enjoy each and every story.

I love hockey romances of all kinds so was really looking forward to reading this anthology. The stories each seemed to cover a different aspect of hockey. The young guys still playing AHL all the way to the retired player still figuring out if he would ever come out. These characters clearly show the worry and angst many bi or gay players go through. The four stories are all well written and give the reader something to think about.
My rating is more a 4.5. Each author has their own style and take on how they handle their story. The big thing is that all of them are hopeful and accepting by the end. I was really excited to see that this particular anthology is four complete novellas. Sure, I would love to read more about these men but, they are each a complete story.
I would recommend this anthology to anyone who loves hockey and all the men who play it. The stories are a bit too graphic at times for the under 18 reader but NA and older will surely enjoy them. This is a charitable anthology donating to aking sports inclusive.

Every novella is this collection is very good. It is rare to find so many good novellas all together and for a good cause. All of the romance center around hockey are quick and fun reads.

Head in the Game by Jeff Adams gives us a lovely age difference romance.

Second Chance at Love by Heather Lire is a romance between two former best friends. This is the one I liked least because too much happen off page.

Rookie Moves by V.L. Locey lets us spend time with Riley and Kieffer and is a really pleasurable romance about an established couple.

Secrets by Rj Scott tells the tale of Avery and Benji which is my favorite of the collection because of the emotionial connection.

Good stuff!

What can I say? Read it! the long and short of it is this collection of novellas is a great read for a great cause. I discovered ice hockey due to Sabrina Bowen's books centered on college, hockey, I was hooked. After that I looked for for m/m erotica with ice hockey themes. these stories rank right near the top in this genre. never having been a sports fan I was shocked to find myself a puck granny and watching games but more often reading the stories I found. Each of these stories shines for their own reason. The second chance story the friends to lovers the rookie versus the seasoned player. Something for everyone. especially if you like hot and steamy hockey players ir lawyers in the rain forest.

Men, love, hockey and You Can Play all winners

Four stories about men, love and hockey it doesn't get much better. All the authors Jeff Adams, Heather Lire, V.L. Lovey and R.J. Scott wrote inspiring stories about
the world I wished we lived in where all gay athletes are out and proud. The authors are making a donation to You Can Play a great organization that teaches tolerance and acceptance to kids with the message that LGBTQ+ or not, if you have the skills you should be able to play the sport you love.

I enjoyed all the stories in this collection, all were well paced and engaging.
probably averaged out about 3.8*
In Jeff Adams' story, Roger is dealing with a crisis in form and heads back to his roots to help with summer hockey camp and reconnect with his old coach - finding his mojo is aided by Dylan a fellow camp coach.
Heather Lire deals with after the playing has finished in her story - and goes the reunited friends to lovers route in Costa Rica. Zach has to step out of the closet to get his HEA.
VL Locey takes us onto the ice with a follow up to a free story but I didn't really feel I'd missed out by not reading that one. Keiffer has a grim past and is working to better himself but still feels drawn to his street friends. Luckily hockey player Riley has the funds and all round niceness to help out.
RJ Scott's story has more hockey in it, but her main guy Benji is hard to like at first as he guards his heart and his secret very well. Avery is a bit deer in headlights but ultimately is the strong one

this was ok, plus 1 extra star for the cause.

I enjoyed the first of these anthologies mainly because of the stories by Avon Gale and Samantha Wayland; those two authors didn't have stories in this one. the first three stories (Head in the Game by Jeff Adams, Second Chance at Love by Heather Lire, and Rookie Moves by V L Locey) were ok, not super memorable. I did like the last story (Secrets by RJ Scott) more.

RJ Scott’s story Secrets was excellent in this anthology! And Jeff Adams’ Head in the Game a good runner up. These two stories had the true essence and flavor of hockey woven into their stories. I love a good hockey romance.

I was looking for some short M/M hockey stories and this fit the bill. I really enjoyed them all. Each was different in how the HEA evolved and it kept me turning the pages happily.
