My First Book of Lacrosse, the fifth book in the best-selling Rookie Book series from Sports Illustrated Kids, explains this fast-growing sport to young readers.
A fun guide for beginning readers, My First Book of Lacrosse introduces kids to the plays, positions, and basics of lacrosse through a visual retelling of a professional game. From the face-off to the game-winning goal, checking, scooping, passing, and more are all explained using simple text, cool graphics, and real Major League Lacrosse and college level photography to help young kids feel like they are on the field experiencing the game. Illustrated “rookie” characters—a girl and a boy—appear on every page to guide kids through the book as they read alone or along with their lacrosse loving (or bewildered) parent.
Yes, this is a children’s book. But, I like how simple this book was and how colorful it is!! The pictures were nice too, and there were a lot of humorous comments. It was hilarious. And the rules and vocabulary were explained really well!! I learned a lot! Lacrosse is a lot like soccer!! I wanted to read this because Peter K from “To All the Boys”’plays it! Plus, it’s good to learn.
@kidlitexchange #partner I should probably state right off the bat that before reading this book with my kids, none of us knew the least bit about lacrosse. We just don’t have a lot of lacrosse teams in our neck of the woods. But now, after reading this book, you might call us experts on the subject. 😉 Or, just people who know a lot more about lacrosse.
“My First Book of Lacrosse,” a Rookie Book from Sports Illustrated Kids, was a big hit at my house. This is the latest in a series that already includes soccer, baseball, hockey and football. ⚽️⚾️🏒🏈
That bright red cover and the super fun fonts drew us in right from the get-go, but it was the appealing formatting inside, with all of the big, colorful pictures and interesting info that had us hooked. The whole premise of the book is to learn the basics of the sport, but you get to see a game played step by step, complete with a timer on the corner of each page like it’s in real time. It’s about the closest you can get to lacrosse without watching actually watching a real, live game of lacrosse. Seriously, it’s so unique.
This is a bigger sized book and yet, the pictures still fill most of the page. This really adds to the feeling of being right there, smack dab in the middle of the game. There’s so much to look at and read all over the pages, including lacrosse facts, lingo, trivia and funny dialogue from the players. We especially liked the two little cartoon characters who are learning about lacrosse right along with the reader. They add the goofiest, punniest jokes to each page.
This book is written by Beth Bugler and Sam Page, with illustrations by Bill Hinds. Thanks to the #kidlitexchange network for the review copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
#partner #kidlitexchange Thank you @kidlitexchange for a review copy of this book. All opinions are my own. The first thing I noticed about this book was how well it represented WOMEN’S lacrosse. Many times in sports books, women’s sports get a page or a paragraph, but this was pretty evenly split! Women are severely underrepresented in sports kidlit, so this was so refreshing! I know nothing about lacrosse, and this book explained it clearly with a neat mixture of cartoon and real photos. The way the real photos were positioned, it almost seemed like I could see the movement. I also liked the funny cartoon captions! Overall highly recommend.
Thanks to #kidlitexchange for sharing a review copy of this book! My First Book of Lacrosse is a GREAT gift idea for anyone starting the game! A lacrosse stick, a mouth guard, and this book would be a fun gift! My son started lacrosse last year, so he really enjoyed reading this intro to the sport. I like the drawings with real life photographs on each page. The language used is easy to read and understand. This is a series. We will definitely check out the other sport books too! .
3 1/2. I'm not sure it explains the (sometimes convoluted) rules of lacrosse (especially the difference between boys and girls), but great photographs, visuals, and a sport that a lot of kids play but hard to find current books on. LOVED the inclusion of girls and boys playing. Younger fans or newbies to the sport will appreciate this. Must add to elementary library sports nonfiction.
