• There are half a million machine guns in Swiss homes
• Turkey has 30,000 troops deployed for use against an EU country
• David Hasselhoff had a role in ending the Cold War
• Snails are a type of fish under EU law From the railway in Hungary run entirely by children to the British comedy sketch, unknown in the UK, but watched by millions across Europe every New Year’s Eve, Emma Hartley reveals the inequalities and absurdities of Europe today. Covering everything from poverty to pop music via politics and pirates, 50 Facts You Need to Europe paints a picture of an astonishingly varied continent. Find out where the worst place in Europe is, why Germans are required to pay a tax direct to the church – unless they declare themselves unbelievers – and what the twelve stars on the EU flag actually represent. Most of the "stories" are tabloid style, under-researched/oversimplified and shallow (with a few exceptions). If you are after some cheap tabloid style entertainment - this book will do.

A witty book about modern Europe, dealing mainly with EU topics. A look into some of the reasons why the EU is seen by some as either strange, boring or a threat to national sovereignty.. or all of them together.
There are some funny chapters which considering that they are based on true facts are actually quite sad.
Its a short book (only 204 pages with 50 chapters, each chapter being a fact, no chapter is longer then 5 pages).
3 Chapter I most enjoyed:
"There are half a million semi-automatic machine guns in Swiss homes"
"Germans pay tax to the church unless they declare themselves atheists"
"Next to the former Berlin wall, two neighbours resolved their argument about a garden... by dividing it with a wall"
