In Holy in the Moment, Ginger Harrington sets out to lift from our shoulders the perceived-heavy burden of holiness and instead replaces it with a definition more closely aligned with God’s intent. At the same time, she doesn’t diminish the importance of holiness in the life of a believer. Rather, she teaches us the simplicity of holiness lived out in every moment – a way to truly enjoy our lives as we walk out our love for God.

I particularly enjoyed her discussions on surrender and abiding in Jesus – what that means and what it looks like in practical ways – and on a ‘continual conversation’ of prayer. She reminds us that Jesus has made it so attainable for each of us, FREEING us from the burdens of impossible perfectionism and frantic busyness. I also really liked her personal stories, the thoughtful questions she asks periodically throughout each chapter, and her ‘simple lists’.

The lists that really spoke to me were:

3 simple ways to abide in Christ on a busy day
5 simple ways to find rest for your BODY
10 simple ways to find rest for your SOUL

My kindle version of the book is highlighted on nearly every page… sometimes the whole page. Here are just a few of the quotes I want to remember:

“Holiness comes when we make room for God in our busy lives, offering our hearts just as they are, not as we wish they were.”
“Abiding trains us to trust God’s heart in hard times.”
“Abiding is the only way to live holy in the moment.”
“Prayer transforms any moment from mundane to significant, from temporal to eternal.”
“Aim for consistency but walk in grace.” (this one is my fave!)
“Far more than a doctrine to follow, holiness is a life to enjoy.“

Bottom Line: With warmth, grace and camaraderie, Ginger Harrington shares the sacred simplicity of holiness as a means to fully enjoy the life God has given us. She uses her own personal story, as well as others, but is quick to apply the Scriptural truths to a wide variety of personalities and struggles. The wisdom here is simple but profound, and her practical tips encourage the weary soul. This would be a great choice for personal growth, devotional reading, and/or small group discussion. Highly recommended!

Love God. Embrace Truth. Enjoy Life.

When Ginger Harrington and her family moved from North Carolina to California, she wasn’t worried about packing or adjusting to a new home base. Rather, she was worried about surviving! Medical testing had revealed that she had Graves’ disease, a hyperthyroid autoimmune disease and suddenly, all the roller coaster symptoms of anxiety and a body stuck in high gear began to make sense. Packing a supply of her new little pills along with her three young children and all their belongings into a moving van, she and her husband did what military families always do–except that this time, Ginger’s moving mojo was drowned in a flood of adrenaline. Sleepless by night and depleted by day, she was forced to reach deeply into the truth she knew but could not feel:

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you.
When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned,
Nor shall the flame scorch you.
For I am the Lord your God. . .” Isaiah 43:2, 3

Ginger’s journal became a spiritual climbing wall, a record of hand holds by which she pulled forward into the next grueling day:

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)
“Don’t fret or worry.” (Philippians 4:6)

Holy in the Moment: Simple Ways to Love God and Enjoy Your Life, part memoir and part manifesto, is Ginger’s record of God’s faithfulness and a gift to readers in search of homely wisdom for living in sync with the promises of God. Fear and weakness forced Ginger to open her heart to the strength that comes only through prayer and to make one holy choice:

“Not every moment is good, but [she would] believe God is good in every moment.”

Truth that Transforms the Hard Moments
Far from stale “religion,” holiness is both practical and relevant to the life of a believer, for it is rooted in relationship with a holy God and grows in direct proportion to our willingness to be transformed in mind, will, and emotion. God’s invitation into holiness is a path away from a “disorderly and unkempt life” and toward a “life that is as beautiful on the inside as the outside.” For Ginger (and for all of us whose feet are walking broken paths), these are life-saving words, and anchor our hearts in the truth that God loves us as we are–not as we wish we were.

A Habit of Prayer in the Moment
Whether dealing with anxiety over major life adjustments or simply bad habits that have produced a hurried soul, redirection begins with the good choice to rest in God and to adopt a moment-by-moment trust. Prayer becomes the affirmation of total dependence upon God, especially as it becomes instinctive to “pray now rather than later.” (Loc 928)

Praying in the moment looks like grace flowing into everyday life:

Write a prayer directly into a social media thread;
Record your prayer in an email or text message and then hit “send”;
Send private, emergency messages to the God who is always listening;
View the fleeting thought about a person or a situation as a call to prayer.
In his classic work Practicing the Presence of God, Brother Lawrence refers to this mindfulness and ongoing dialogue as “continual conversation” with God.

Trust, Lean, Acknowledge
Holy living in the moment translates the familiar wisdom of Proverbs 3:5,6 from theoretical to the intensely practical in three action-oriented steps:

Trust God with all your heart: Trust and love live in direct proportion to one another.
Lean not on your own understanding: “Our own understanding steers crooked with the bias of self.” (Loc 1020) Resigning from our position as adviser to God and depending on His leading is a huge sign that we are depending on Him and not ourselves.
In all your ways acknowledge Him: “To acknowledge God is a form of prayer,” and all our ways would include thoughts, feelings, responses, and decisions. As we embrace God’s way of doing and being, we discover that His promise of straight paths stands in direct contrast to our own broken and bent way of living.
Shimmering Glimpses of Wisdom
Oswald Chambers was known for teaching that prayer is all about relationship rather than answers:

“The purpose of prayer is to get a hold of God.”

As I progressed through Holy in the Moment, I found myself pausing and pondering over shimmering glimpses of wisdom that stand alone in their gracious beckoning toward truth:

“Aim for consistency but walk in grace.”

“You can choose the thoughts you will receive and the ones you will reject.”

“The faith way is to think,”I know my work is taxing, but Christ is my strength.”

“Far more than a doctrine to follow, holiness is a life to enjoy.”

“It’s important to understand that joy is not the absence of pain in circumstances, but rather the presence of God in the midst of them.”

Everyday choices build a life. Mundane moments of loving our kids, cherishing our husbands, and supporting our friends in ten thousand different ways over the course of a lifetime well-lived change us from the inside out. “Loving God whole-heartedly is choosing the life we were made for,” and one day, we discover that God is doing His work through us, and we shine with a glory that is not our own.

Refreshing. Holy in the Moment is such a book that I didn't know I needed. It has refreshed my soul and nourished me in a way I didn't know was needed. Ginger is so encouraging and tender in her writing. She gives practical application in the way that we can draw close to God in the big and the small. What I found to be compelling is how transparent Ginger is in sharing her struggle with anxiety. This book is great because it addresses problem emotions, living a life of prayer and discovering the importance of rest, which I struggle with.
I love that this book is about perfectionism, but rather freedom and holiness that Christ offers to those who are in Him. This book helps take the reader on a journey through a different and more whole view of holiness, which I love. This book will help you with practical tips, truths and with a life that isn't overwhelmed. Renew your life moment by moment through God.

Holy in the Moment is like a holy pause in time where we can learn to reevaluate the simplest things in life. Harrington simplifies loving God into attainable, yet powerful nuggets the reader can use to transform their thoughts and life. I would highly recommend this book to anyone seeking to know God in a deeper level. I felt like I knew this author as a friend by the end of the book. It’s a book a will go back to again and again. I received this book as a gift.

This book is about the power of sacred choices and good decisions, decisions we make every moment. I am impressed with this book. Harrington has spiritual insights I've not seen before. She has filled this book with great teaching and practical ideas for godly living.

I like her clarification of holiness. We might think holiness is a certain behavior. But holiness is a reflection of who we are in Christ. Righteousness is thinking, feeling and acting as the person God created us to be. We begin with God's holiness and exercise our faith by putting God's will before our own.

My favorite chapter was the one on the sacred gift of concentration, important to those of us with SDD, spiritual deficit disorder. The teaching that impressed me the most by far was that on surrender and suffering. “Surrender is our hardest, most sacred prayer as, like Jesus, we submit our desires to God. … When we trust God in our suffering, choosing to pray and accept His will, we release our deepest worship.” (Loc 1058/2560) That really spoke to me.

While there are no questions for reflection as such, there would be much to discuss if this book was used in a trusted group setting. Harrington has included many practical suggestions that are perfect for an accountability group.

Food for thought: “Making intentional choices to trust God is where holiness happens right in the middle of an ordinary day.” (Loc 240/2560)

I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

When I started reading, I instantly had to slow down to absorb what Ginger was trying to say. I thought, "My goodness. She's not pulling her punches at all." Seriously, I read a lot of books every year, and a sizeable portion of those are nonfiction books that belong in the Christian Living category. In this book, Ginger Harrington does not mince words. From the first page, she lovingly yet bluntly lays it all on the line. Her passion wraps itself around me as she pleads for me to understand truth with a sincerity that cannot be manufactured.

She transparently shares different struggles from her life, and she possesses a wonderful ability to combine words in simple yet profound sentences. I could easily fill several notebook pages with wonderful quotes from the book. Questions that made me stop to consider, like:
"To tell you the truth, too much of my mental and physical time is spent trying to get it all together in some perfectly performing package of worthiness. What's possible when we stop trying to make ourselves better and simply trust God to guide, help, and provide in each moment as it comes?"

Encouragement for my weary heart, like:
"Our efforts to live a Spirit-filled life are vitally important, but we have to understand we aren't working to be holy and pleasing to God—we already are."

Truthfully, what I really want to do is buy each one of you a copy of this book. To sit down with you and soak in what God is trying to say to each of us. To refresh ourselves with the reality that God wants to bless us with Himself in this moment. Right now. No matter what is going on in you or around you. This is not a feel-good book. It is a pour-calming-waters-into-an-overbusy-life book. If you want to better understand the gift of holiness that God wants to impart to you, this is a great place to start.

Holiness is an underrepresented topic in contemporary Christian writing, and I enjoyed Ginger Harrington‘s coverage of this important subject.

Ginger’s story involves cross-country moves, debilitating anxiety, and tests of faith. She describes how the pursuit of holiness can provide stability and peace in our challenges.

This verse sums up Ginger’s approach to holy living:

“God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life–your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life–and place it before God as an offering.” Romans 12:1 MSG

I appreciated the stories Ginger shared from her own life about pursuing holiness in all kinds of moments. Enjoy this sampling of quotes from Holy in the Moment:

Just as umbrellas shield us from rain, faith protects us from questions and doubts that flood our souls.

Faith is a gift from God, not some secret power we must manufacture on our own. Faith is inseparably tied to the power and holiness of God.

Holy in the moment, I want love for my God to motivate all I do–work, serve, rest, and play.

Prayer transforms any moment from mundane to significant, from temporal to eternal.

Ginger wrote an interesting chapter on how to meditate on God’s word to take control of your thought life. Since I’m working on a project with that theme, I enjoyed her approach to the subject. She offers plenty of practical applications for finding and seeking holiness in everyday living throughout this book.

I don't normally give 5-star reviews to first-time authors, but my goodness, this was a well-written book! I was completely hooked when the author said, "branches don't need a three-step formula or a five-step plan to abide in the vine." What a simple, yet profound statement.

If I had to sum up the message of this book in one word, it would be "surrender." When we choose holiness in the moment, we discover a better way of living. A more restful, peaceful, purposeful way of living. Reading this book was akin to taking a "Holiness 101" course in college. The author inspired me to choose holy over busy, stressed, and empty.

There was a wealth of biblical wisdom packed into a practical manual for holy living - penetrating spiritual truths followed by helpful practical advice.

I would definitely recommend this book to my friends! Looking forward to reading more books from this author in the future.

Packed with truth and peppered with bullet points, Holy in the Moment is a winning blend of Scripture, practical guidance, and examples of personal life application. This is not a book to tuck away on a shelf, but one to keep at your fingertips for quick reference and reminders. Harrington shows us how to not only find the holy in our everyday lives, but how to be holy. It’s a quest too rarely taken in our culture, but one that, as believers, we can’t afford to miss.

I've read several nonfiction books billed as "for the reader" but they were actually thinly veiled memoirs with too many personal stories and little practical value for the reader. I'm delighted to say Holy in the Moment does not fall into that category. This book has a lot of substance to it. The personal examples are always relevant and supportive to the main points, but they do not hog the spotlight. This is really a worthwhile read.

Holy in the Moment is one of the most encouraging books I've read in a long time. Ginger shows us that we can make practical choices to draw near to God in the everyday moments of life.

Ginger's transparent sharing about her battle with anxiety pulled me in to the book from chapter 1, but no matter what your personal struggle is, this book will encourage you to Believe, Choose, Love, Abide, Surrender, and Rest in God moment by moment.

This book helped me see holiness in a brand new, fresh way. Part 1 encourages us to Love God in Every Moment, Part 2 is about Embracing Truth in Every Moment, and Part 3 helps us to Enjoy Life for Our Best Moments. Each chapter ends with practical how-to's and tips for our spiritual lives.

If you feel overwhelmed by life, burned out, tired, anxious, or stressed, this book can help you find refreshment and renewal in God. Moment by Moment.

What I love about this book is Ginger's honesty. She speaks openly about her struggles in motherhood, her difficulties with anxiety, and the fears she encountered with cross-country moves while her husband was in the military. But she also writes about the joy she has experienced each time she allowed the Lord to lead and guide her through wearisome circumstances.

Ginger provides practical guidance and suggestions for living a holy life in the middle of mundane circumstances. And because she is a few steps ahead of me on this journey, I've gleaned lots of wisdom her. I know her book will be an encouragement to those who read it.

Holiness. It sounds like a pretty lofty ideal.

But maybe it's not as complicated as we make it.

Ginger Harrington breaks down the concept in a way that reminds us that living a holy life starts with making simple decisions each day to spend our moments resting in God, abiding in His love, and hearing what He has to say to us.

This is a wonderful resource with great, practical reminders to live each day as a holy day, rather than getting caught up in the pressure of trying to live a perfect day.

"Our core beliefs are tucked away in the secrecy of our souls."

In our lives of faith, we just need to practice the presence of God in everyday choices, one moment at a time. But we need to be reminded. This book delightfully reminds us to love God, embrace truth, enjoy life every moment. A very rich book that I'll be returning to time and time again for encouragement.

DNF @ 51%

Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with and e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I requested this one because I wanted to read some up and coming Christian nonfiction because I do read a lot of that genre. Unfortunately, that may have been the reason I ending up not enjoying this book itself because I do read a ton in the christian nonfiction genre and this didn’t feel like it brought any sort of new insights; I just felt like I had read too many books like it. The kindle ebook format I had of the copy also tended to split up random sentences with spaces which made it a little more frustrating to read on occasion so that may contributed to my DNFing it.

Nothing against the author or the subject itself, this one just wasn’t my favorite. I do think this might be a debut novel though so I do wish the author all the best luck and if I ever come across this book in physical format I may reconsider picking it back up!

Dwelling in God's presence. Giving God our anxiety. A beautifully orchestrated composition of a holy relationship with a Holy God. As a perfectionist and one who struggles with control and belonging, I found the compass to the Scriptures for our understanding of God, refreshing and comforting. What better way to dwell in His presence? Thanks for a lovely walk into the realm of Christ’s holiness and purpose for our lives. I am trying to use a bullet journal to mark a few key goals for each day, but I find I am less stressed and bound by the “things” of the world, when I rest in His presence. I will be reminded of the author’s authentic living, and sharing her struggles, as I, too, struggle with some of the effects of personal anxiety which creeps into my days and my nights unless I can give Him my worries and struggles, no matter how hopeless life seems. It’s nice to know someone else has walked with God in His holiness. Well done.

MWSA Review

Let’s face it—holiness is no easy topic to write about! The whole concept of holy can feel esoteric, unwieldy and largely irrelevant to our daily lives. We tend to think of holiness as something that resides in the realm of the divine rather than the rough and tumble of daily life, right?

Well, not exactly. After all, the Word is clear, “Be holy, as I am holy.” But how?

Perhaps this is what makes Holy in the Moment work. Ginger Harrington is no advocate for pious perfectionism or holier than thou religious endeavor. Holy in the Moment aspires to practical life strategies and meaningful moments that create patterns of holy living and right alignment with God. Harrington’s approach to holiness is less about religion than real life choices and meaningful relationship.

Holy in the Moment is a reminder of Richard Foster’s powerful insight into what he calls the principle of indirection—We do not become holy by trying to be holy; we only become holy by growing into right relationship with God (Celebration of Discipline). God takes our small daily offerings of ourselves and makes something that far exceeds our wildest expectations.

Harrington translates the spiritual disciplines into something less about regimen than real life choices and faith in action. Through her own journey of discovery, Harrington offers simple reminders and holy habits to enable us to live less self-centered and more God-centered lives.

Get real with God about your true feelings. Set the atmosphere in your home. Choose holiness over legalism. Count the cost of perfectionism. Make the sacred choice to forgive. Call someone else's unrecognized gift to the surface. Extend the gift of invitation. Get rid of toxic attitudes.

This pragmatic approach to holiness lays out a road map of intentional moments, daily behaviors, and practical decisions that reorient our lives and put us on the path to deeper relationship with God. Holiness is fruit--the supernatural byproduct of incremental change, daily surrender, and simple obedience. Only God can make us holy.

“Sacred simplicity is a secret to a life well lived,” the author writes, “when we make the most of all our moments for God to change our lives one spiritual choice at a time.”
