I requested this from Netgalley literally because I’ve been trying to get some ideas for remodeling my bathroom. I can’t stand the colors and design of our bathroom (it was that way when we moved in), but I haven’t been able to change it because I just didn’t know what to do with it! This book has every possible idea you could think of including textiles, tubs vs. showers (and what kinds of each), lighting, flooring, appliances, storage, and accents. There’s also a section that talks about how to clean different kinds of fixtures, and what cleaners are best and safest to use in your bathroom. I definitely came out of reading this with some great ideas for my own remodel, so this book did exactly what I was hoping for!
Highly recommended if you’re looking for remodeling ideas for your bathroom, in any price range or style.
Received from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was a stunning collection of beautifully artistic approaches to renovating and decorating your bathroom. From tiles, to wallpaper, to taps, and mirrors.... this book has a wide variety of ideas and inspiration for you. I am certainly not in the market for redoing my bathroom, but it was still such a wonderful book to look through, and the cleaning tips and tricks were certainly a well appreciated bonus. This could almost double as a coffee table book as well, because the photos are honestly so aesthetically pleasing that it's almost soothing. LOVED IT!!
I have received a much appreciated digital copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
This book lives up to its name as being full of bathroom ideas that someone can use, especially someone who is looking to freshen up or remodel their bathroom. If someone like me, no particular expert when it comes to the sort of work that is involved in home construction or remodeling can find a great deal of use and design inspiration in a book like this, then certainly others who are more competent in such areas will find much to appreciate here. The author has apparently written a whole suite of books that relates to DIY and home contracting and even building one's own homestead with a high degree of self-reliance and independence, and based on the quality of this book there are likely more of his books in my reading future if I can find them. At any rate, this book did a great job at showing some of the sort of design and design principles can elevate a restroom from plain and drab to something very remarkable that one would enjoy showing off and spending a great deal of time in, something I am no stranger as the statue of the reader on the toilet will attest to.
This book is as little less than 200 pages long and it is divided into several sections. The author begins by discussing bathrooms by sizes, looking at powder rooms and half baths, detatched and guest bathrooms, and large and master baths respectively. After this there is a discussion of various scintillating surfaces, walls, tiles, floors, and vanity counters. The author spends some time looking at vanities and cabinets and shelves as ways of increasing storage before including a variety of beautiful and stylish standing, alcove, corner, drop-in, and walk-in bathtubs as well as luxury shower enclosures. There is a chapter on fashionable toilets and bidets, sink colors, drop-in sinks, undermount sinks, wall-mount sinks, and pedestal and vessel sinks. A short chapter discusses faucets, showerheads, and tub faucets with high design values. There are some ideas to keep a bathroom well-lit through vanity lights and general fixtures and then the author closes the book with a lengthy set of bathroom extras, including universal design, makeup areas, saunas, shower accessories, skylights & windows, towel warmers, mirror style, and accents, after which the book closes with resources and photo credits.
Having read a variety of books about bathroom remodeling and construction, what makes this book a joy to read in that crowded field is the way that this book shows such gorgeous things that one can put in a bathroom. In reading this book, I was struck by just how much I care about good design principles in a bathroom, in the enjoyment of a skylight that allows a room to be filled with natural light (as much natural light as one can get in Oregon at any rate), in the way that it feels good to have good equipment that is environmentally sound as well as attractive, like the square rain shower heads that are simply amazing to use. This is an author that has clearly done a lot of work in bathrooms and believes not only that it is worthwhile to do such work of remodeling restrooms for the personal enjoyment of homeowners and family and guests, but also that it is worth doing so with a sense of style and flair, with an attention to materials and colors and fixture and plumbing design. And looking at this book, I have to say that I agree with the author that bathrooms ought to be viewed with a sense of design, even if that means having an odd but delightful waterfall faucet for one's bathroom sink.
See my full review at https://mmbookshelf.wordpress.com/201... This update from the first edition (2013) is photo-packed, offering suggestions of what to consider in your bathroom design, whether it’s a new-build or a renovation. It’s not a do-it-yourself guide in the least, but rather it provides inspiration for designing your bathroom, giving information on the latest styles, surfaces and fixtures, and drawing your attention to matters of comfort, beauty, luxury and accessibility as you design the space. The book is just under 200 pages, and most facing page spreads feature four to six photos along with helpful explanations and tips to guide you in making the best choice for your family life, style preference, and budget. The book opens with a general review of three kinds of bathrooms, organized by size: powder rooms and half baths; detached and guest bathrooms; large and master baths - I would have preferred one organized by style. Following this section, there are seven chapters that each address different aspects of bathroom planning: surfaces, storage, tubs and shower stalls, fixtures (toilets, bidets, and sinks), hardware, lighting and then a final chapter of extras such as mirrors, windows, accessories, etc. The photos offer the reader a lot to consider in terms of style – tile, stone, vinyl and even wood floors, modern glass suites, detailed tilework that brings to mind an Italian villa, plumbing in gold, chrome and nickel, and of course, a wide variety of fixtures and vanities. This makes it a true browsing experience, in which the reader explores the images to find the elements that appeal. This edition includes a full dozen pages on designing for accessibility, which was great to see. While budget designs get a bit of facetime here, most of the focus is on designing a luxurious bath space. Peterson points out that much of this new luxury is growing more affordable for regular homeowners, but I am astonished by the idea that people seem to expect to spend so much time in what has traditionally been the smallest room in the house! My thanks to publisher Cool Springs Press for the digital reading copy provided in exchange for my honest review.
Great book with lots of useful ideas for bathroom remodels. I only wish I had a bathroom big enough for some of the ones in here! I have gotten lots of helpful hints from this book. I hope the publisher issues a kitchen one next!
I was delighted to receive this book from Goodreads Giveaways!
This book has such diversity and different types of examples of bathroom areas. The pictures are on every page and are fanastic to view. There is a style that fits anyone or everyone in this book.
I would highly recommend this book to those that are in the beginning stages of building a house or implementing a remodeling of the bathroom area.
This is a beautifully photograghed book. It gave my husband and I some new ideas of what to do with our small bathroom remodel. It explained in detail how to make your bathroom larger than it is. It featured the latest items out on the market. There is a lot of ideas for larger bathrooms and if we had the room we would definitely do. If you are doing a bathroom remodel, you should get this book!!!
I was glad to see 2 pages devoted to universal design. When I was only to page 19, and already found a photo that didn't match with it's caption, I knew the makers were not careful people who want to produce a quality product. Of all bathroom idea books, I like Sarah Susanka's suggestions and photos the very best. I did like the description of grab bars that are useful to help a person get on and off the toilet.
There are some very fabulous ideas in this book about bathroom designs, the photo are clear and the tips and reasoning behind each techniques used in each photo are interesting. If you are thinking of designing a bathroom this book will be helpful, as there are lots of photos.
