Do you have a friend, co-worker, or family member who is trans? Are you trans yourself and looking for a book to help friends and loved ones better understand? Are you seeking understanding on your own behalf? This is the book for you! Transition and Beyond will help anyone seeking information of what it means (and doesn't mean) to be trans. This book addresses issues that arise when considering transition, such as:
- Partner/spouse issues - Coming out to family - Religious considerations - Addiction and transition - Workplace disclosure - Children transitioning - What does 'support' look like? - What does 'post-transition' mean? - Trans in the new millenium
As a therapist and a transgendered person, Reid brings tremendous insight and empathy into the problems and rewards for transgendered people and for significant others. He is thoughtful, careful and eloquent.
I'm going to admit first that I haven't read this cover to cover (yet). I borrowed a copy from my voice coach so I could evaluate it as something to send to my dad, and I will be buying my own copy.
That said, a great book and while every chapter might not be relevant to everyone, it's a broad overview of a lot of trans issues. Even though Reed himself is a trans man, it's not really focused in that direction either, as he pulls from a multitude of trans women clients of all sorts for his observations.
Likely required reading for anyone going through this process, I know I will be looking at it more in depth as soon as I can.
This is another one of those that I REALLY want to read but haven't been able to afford yet...so if you have an extra copy lying around, i'm your man! :)
