The Flight of Betsey Lane is a short story by Sarah Orne Jewett, first published in 1886. It is included in her collection A Country Doctor and Selected Stories and Sketches .
Sarah Orne Jewett was an American novelist and short story writer, best known for her local color works set in or near South Berwick, Maine, on the border of New Hampshire, which in her day was a declining New England seaport.
Enjoyed this 1886 short story. Betsey is elderly and in the workhouse, but someone from her former employer's family comes to see her and gives her two hundred dollars. She uses it to visit the Centennial celebrations in Philadelphia. Nice details, warm, some good characterisation.
