“Happy Birthday, Maisy!” is a simple picture book for Pre-K students learning to read. We follow Maisy as she prepares for her birthday party and awaits the arrival of her friends. The book is interactive, allowing children to open flaps and move around the objects in the book’s nooks and crannies. The world of Maisy celebrates the simplicity of life and teaches children to value the things they have and the people who love them. This picture book is colorful and fun. The images convey what the text shows, not leaving much to interpret or deeply analyze. An essay by Perry Nodelman explains how books like these are not as simple as they seem. “The ‘simple delight’ sophisticated adults like Brian Alderson and me take in this picture is not likely to be shared by children unaware of the ethical value of an ‘innocent eye,’ untutored in the ‘artworld.’”(Nodelman 2005). Children do not see it as a simple image but something magical, especially if they are learning to read. Children’s books like those in The Maisy Universe teach children how to understand the images they are being shown to identify them in their minds when they become more advanced readers.

Maisy is just right for toddlers—her bold world, full of familiar touchstones, is as comforting and colorful as birthday cake!

Both new fans and devoted friends will love to attend Maisy's birthday party! There's so much to do! There are tabs to pull and flaps to lift, and children can join in the party games, help blow out the candles, see Maisy's cards and presents, and sing "Happy Birthday, Maisy!" As always, the amazing Maisy means crayon-bright fun for the very young.

Growing up I remember reading and watching Spot. Maisy is just as delightful and brings me back to my childhood now that I have littles who are interested in all the picture books!

Happy Birthday Maisy, is an engaging book for students. I would have this book as an independent reading book, students will have fun pulling the different tabs to view presents and make the animals move. Students can make text-to-self connections about their own birthdays and how it relates to Maisy's birthday.

It's Maisy's birthday and her friends are coming over for her party. Little ones will enjoy pulling a tab to let the mail into the door's mail slot, take a card out of the envelope, blow out candles and more. The tabs to pull and the flaps to lift make this a fun book to share, especially before a birthday party.

Fairly entertaining story from the "Maisy" series. I find these books to be mildly irritating, but our girls seem to really enjoy them.
