The Spell of the Horse
The ability of the horse to sense emotion, energy and spirit is way beyond what most of the human world realises. A must-read for those wishing to understand the spiritual connection between horses and humans.
When Pam’s mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer, she began to notice the way her horse responded to her emotional turmoil. Thus began an exploration into the spiritual relationship between horses and humans and their infinite capacity to help us heal. Building on her remarkable discoveries, Pam began her pioneering work as a horse-led coach and therapist. By sharing her own path to redemption through personal tragedy, and other stories of healing inspired by the incredible interactions she has observed between horse and human, Pam puts forward her uplifting insights about the true nature of the horse, setting out some simple principles to help the reader transcend life's challenges.
Discover the lessons which horse behaviour have taught the author about
* managing anxiety
* surviving bereavement
* letting go of fear and finding courage to live with joy and purpose
* listening to inner wisdom without overthinking dilemmas, allowing the right things to happen in life without force
This memoir will appeal to fans of The Outrun by Amy Liptrot, The Wild Other by Clover Stroud and H is For Hawk by Helen Macdonald. Pam Billinge is a body psychotherapy professional and leadership coach at the top of her game in the UK field of horse-led therapy.

About the author
Pam Billinge
5 books4 followersThe first horses which Pam became fascinated by were ridden by the mounted policemen she would see passing her childhood home in Liverpool on the way to supervise football matches. Little did she know, then, how these magnificent creatures would influence her adult life, not only supporting her through a number of personal tragedies, but also leading to her pioneering work in horse-led psychotherapy and coaching.
In her first book, The Spell of the Horse, Pam shares her memoir and other stories inspired by the incredible interactions she has observed between horse and human. Thus she reveals the true nature of the horse whilst delivering some simple principles to help the reader transcend life’s challenges to live with purpose, self-belief and joy.

I’ve been a horse owner for part of my life and have always found the relationship between horse and human to be something very special. After reading this book, I understand even more how horses can sense our emotions because we are transparent and they react to them in many different ways. I’ve suffered from anxiety and depression in the past and I’ve discovered first hand how animals, including horses, can assist us in many ways. They are there for us in our time of need and can help us discover our true self. They have the power to help us heal.
“My body and soul were moving to a different rhythm. The self-pity had gone. My vitality was back. I was thankful for every breath I took in this incredible world. I was under the spell, the spell of the Horse. Healing had commenced.”
Pam Billinge has written a book about her own journey to heal and achieve happiness. She writes about her experiences with horses and horse therapy. While struggling herself, she works with people who are having problems in their lives and the horse, in turn, helps them discover what’s wrong. Horses respond to their emotions and after working with them, they begin to ask themselves what they need to change in their own life trajectories and why things are the way they are with their family, relationships, career, or life in general.
I found The Spell of the Horse emotional at times, especially when it seemed that the author’s life was in a downward spiral. The book contains some of the author’s experience with challenging relationships, tragedy, love, death, and mourning. Some of my favorite parts in the book involved the discovery.
“Our spirit, our essence, is about being. It is the life that pulses and ripples within us. It is what is left when the heart beats no more. It is something that is sensed, and something of the senses. It is something which resonates, which vibrates. It is a silent music, and the emotions and feelings that animate us during life are the notes, the chords, and the crescendos of that symphony.”
The Spell of the Horse can be cherished by those who work with horses or enjoy horses in general, but it can also help anyone discover that healing is real. Readers will discover how others have changed their direction in life and have become happier people because of it. They’ve taken control, and all because of the spell of the horse.

The Spell of the Horse is a wonderfully emotional read. It is a combination of a memoir covering the ups and downs of the author’s personal life as well as her career in horse-led therapy, so can be read as a self-help book too.
Reading about some parts of the author’s past were very emotional, and at times I felt tearful, probably not helped by my grandad dying while I was in the middle of reading this book. This memoir covers the author’s experiences of love, loss, grief, anxiety, stress and heartache. It was fascinating reading about how her changing emotions had an impact on the behaviour of her horses, as well as how her horses helped her get through the hard times.
Seeing how people reacted to the therapy with horses was wonderful to witness. It was so heart-warming seeing them improve and how much of an impact a horse can have on a human. This book describes the most powerful sense of a horse being spirit and energy, rather than sight or sound, and I truly believe that based on how I feel around horses. There is something overwhelmingly therapeutic about horses.
I could relate to the author’s descriptions of anxiety. I too am a coper, so struggle to admit any of my weaknesses, and generally try to push through it. I’ve had anxiety most of my life, but as I’ve got older, I’ve got better at hiding it from the outside world. One thing I really took from this book was the reminder that life is about ‘being’ rather than just ‘doing’. Sometimes we’re too busy doing things that we forget to stop long enough to enjoy being in that moment, appreciate what is around us and love life.
Whether you know a lot or very little about horses, I think this is a book that can be enjoyed by anyone who at least has an appreciation of how special horses are. I don’t claim to know much about horses at all. My knowledge goes about as far as describing their size and colour. I’ve only ever ridden a horse twice in my life. Once when I was nine years old and again when I was fourteen. Despite my lack of knowledge, my fascination goes back to my childhood, starting with my obsession with My Little Ponies. I was still playing with them when I was twelve years old, and would always choose them over dolls.
As an adult I have to go over to horses in a field when I’m on country walks. It’s hard to describe, but I feel a very strong pull towards them, and if they are in the mood to interact with me, I’m left with this happy floating sensation inside me, as if in that moment I’m truly at peace with the world. There is something magical about horses, and I’m sure I’m not the only person who falls in love with a horse in the countryside and imagines them with a magical invisible unicorn horn. On that note, I should probably end here before I get accused on living in a world of my own again.
The Spell of the Horse is definitely a book I highly recommend if you have an appreciation of horses and enjoy memoirs and self-help books.

Horses have the ability to understand out emotions and help us in ways we can’t possibly imagine.
I confess, I thought The Spell of the Horse would be a twee book of sickly entries from a horse fanatic. My abject apologies Pam. There is nothing twee or sickly about the depth of emotion portrayed in this wonderful book. in fact, I found much of The Spell of the Horse so powerful I had to read it in chunks as I couldn’t deal with the emotions portrayed in big sessions.
I think The Spell of the Horse is actually a very brave book. Pam Billinge lays herself bare for all to see. She shares her hopes and fears, her happiness and sadness, joy and grief, so that it is impossible not to be moved by several of the entries. Pam knows when she has made mistakes and is not afraid to share those times so that others may benefit. The events in Pam’s life are those where all readers can find something to relate to. I loved, for example, Pam’s description of herself as three different women who could hold hands and support one another as I know I’ve used different personas in different situations in my own life. I think the concept of ‘integrating the splinters of yourself’ will stay with me for the rest of my life.
Pam also writes beautifully. There’s a poetic quality to her descriptions and she has a real eye for detail, especially colour, so that her words really come alive on the page. Pam is a true storyteller as well as someone writing self help style material.
The Spell of the Horse is a very special book. In the same way many of those in its pages needed to learn to approach the horses appropriately in order to appreciate them and their power fully, I think some readers will need to approach this book with an open mind if they are to benefit from it fully. I shall be revisiting the pages of The Spell of the Horse many times and if you’re feeling lost in your life I urge you to read it too.

There's something very special about our relationship with horses. For so long we relied on them, they helped to manage our daily lives in such a way that the symbiosis between us runs deep and is forever. In The Spell of the Horse the author reiterates this message time after time and shows just how the perfect cooperation between horse and human can be used to therapeutic effect.
Anyone who has ever had contact with horses will find an immediate connection, and will completely understand the unique spell of the horses in this book. The author writes about this association with fine attention to detail, her special affinity and deep respect for horses shines through with every well written word and every emotional connection.
I think what this book also shows is that it’s not just about galloping horses across feathery fields, or kicking up surf along the water’s edge, as sometimes the most valuable healing comes from just being in close proximity to one of these magnificent creatures. Anyone who has ever stroked the soft face of a horse and looked into the quiet wisdom of its eyes will know exactly what I mean. There’s comfort to be had in standing quietly in a horse’s stall, just listening to the quiet munch of hay, or hearing the stamp of restless feet and the judder of breath.
I can easily understand how the author wanted to share her work and the value of what she does is boundless. The Spell of the Horse is not just about the value of horse led therapy, it’s also a fitting tribute by someone whose love and respect for horses shines through this book from start to finish.

I really enjoyed this book. I've been involved with horses briefly throughout different times in my life, so I found this book quite enlightening. I got an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Finding life’s answers through horses.
Pam Billinge started out in the corporate world but a holiday in Spain, horse riding through the beautiful countryside, made her re-evaluate her life’s path. The first thing that she did on her return to the UK was to study for and obtain her degree in psychotherapy. In 2008 Pam spent six intensive weeks in America with one of the world’s best known, natural horsemanship teachers.
With these tools she felt she could start her practice, working with chief executives of global organisations, corporate teams, and young people who struggle to learn to fit in with society. She so perfectly describes, through her writing, that her work is really “horse-led”. The interaction between her horses and clients is what makes her work so fulfilling, not just for her, but for the people who experience this unique therapy.
This book arrived at a critical time in my life as my eldest four-legged grandson, Boo, a Dutch Warmblood stallion, who my daughter had discovered as a foal, had contracted a deadly virus and had lost his battle trying to fight it. He was a gentle giant who could read my daughter’s feelings and moods. He shared her deepest secrets. He was an extension of her which was obvious when they were either doing dressage or show-jumping. Boo also had a special ability to “appear” to me, if he felt that he alone could not help her through a problem.
I’m sharing this story because by reading this book, I am finally able to understand and fully appreciate my own daughter’s extraordinary talent with horses. Her work in equitation is the rehabilitation of both horse and rider. Thanks to Pam, I can look at her work with my eyes wide open. I truly wish that more people in the world could experience the work that Pam Billinge offers because connecting to an animal – especially a horse - is one of the life’s most precious experiences. Learning how to cope with being a team leader in a corporate world, well, that’s just the icing on the top.
Pam, there are not enough words to express my gratitude to you for writing and sharing your work. It has brought about a healing in my own life, by making me realise exactly how gifted my own daughter is. (I told her some twenty odd years to “get a proper job” when she told me she was going to “work with horses”). I just wish that I could sit in the field with Winston, Ruby and the Shetlands, passing the time of day. Just imagining it, is enough to bring happy thoughts for me.

Not my normal read. I felt like I was with the protagonist, bonding with each horse and watching patients heal. Makes me want to go find a horse of my own.

This is an amazing book which I think everyone should read. I have never really been interested in horses, maybe feeling more than a little afraid of them but reading this has given me an whole new insight into conquering this fear. Equally interesting is where the journey started and finished in the Alpujarras as I only live an hour away and have spent some time up there and hope to visit the ruined mosque in the near future. A very uplifting and moving story.

A big fat five stars! This is a fascinating and extremely well written book. Although it’s particularly for anyone who is interested in horses, you definitely don't need to be an expert in horses. Some of the case studies and personal experiences actually made me cry.

A story of a corporate therapist using horses as a way to awaken peoples emotions and learn how to acknowledge and change their behavior.
This is the first book from Blackbird Digital I did not enjoy. Probably because it's a self-help book and there are very few books of this genre I can stomach. Especially when the author had a strenuous relationship with her mother and father, was not close or connected to her two siblings and constantly ran from every relationship she ever formed. Is this person really qualified to give advise on how others should be behaving?
Nothing wrong with the writing, I did actually enjoy the stories of the authors life, but I did not enjoy the stories of the therapy sessions with the horses. Basically, someone experiencing trouble connecting at the workplace would met Pam, Pam would introduce them to a hose, the horse would reject them, then they would realize it was their tense body language and bad behavior. They left with a whole new "outlook" on life simply because they got rejected by a horse...

What an amazing book. It's more than a memoir. More than an accounting of what happened. It's more than a reference or self-help book. Pam shares the story of her own personal journey to find a deeper relationship with her horses and an understanding of how they truly interact with people.
What started on holiday in Andalusia ended up changing her life. After a week spent riding the hill country, her head and her heart were focused on one thing. Maintaining her connection that she had made that week with horses.
Through trial and error, talking with vets and other horse people, and listening to and watching her own horses, Ms. Billinge came to an understanding of how horses perceive people and how the two species interact.
The pace is easy going. Situations are explained and people are introduced in such a way that you have no problem understanding who they are. Her personal story is used appropriately. It makes you want to spend time with horses and it makes you want to be able to slow down, meditate. The text carries you through as she worked through her personal losses and the advances of her understanding of horses, their perceptions, and the best ways for people and horses to try to work together. Her story. Her clients' stories. Bringing it all full circle.
If you like horses. If you've ever wondered how they do therapy with horses. If you've ever wondered if there might be another way to get therapy other than what you've already tried. If you're just looking for a touching story to read. Pick this up today as it is released at your local bookstore. September 18, 2017 paperback & ebook

This is such a lovely book and very thought provoking as many readers will resonate, like I did, with stories that are told within about Pam's clients. There are many wonderful quotes and I will be sure to refer to this book again and again. It has also inspired me to spend more time around horses, not to ride but to connect with them and learn more about myself.
The writing is beautiful throughout - all of my senses took me to Spain and Colorado with her - as she described her own experiences and that of others with such emotion, passion and clarity.
What Pam has discovered and achieved with her horses is amazing and to use it in such a way to help others is incredible. To write about it now will hopefully open up this unique learning experience to many others. I welled up a couple of times and had goosebumps even more as Pam shared her own story in such a candid yet sensitive way.
"While you put energy into who you are not, you can't put it into who you are. You can't ever explore your true potential while under-investing in your real, essential self"

After ordering this book as a Christmas gift, I have had to wait in anticipation to read it. I was not disappointed and I will be reading it again several times over.
Pam has detailed her own personal sadness and joy to help others. Highlighting the spiritual nature of horses, that so many over look. Although huge in comparison to us, Pam gives an insight into how delicate and sensitive horses are.
I can't say enough good about it, I cried within the first few pages and felt emotional in one way or another whilst reading the whole book. After losing my Dad several years ago, it was my own horse who kept me sane enough to support those who needed me at the time and years after. Therefore I felt I could relate to some of the writing Pam has shared. This is a book horse lovers and non horse lovers should read, I loved it (if you haven't gathered that already!) my copy will be dog eared and grubby in no time. Cracking work Pam

Very touching and inspiring! Thank you so much Pam Billinge for sharing your personal experiences, education, training and keen natural skill in observation that bring you to such profound perceptions! You clearly use all of your skills and talents in a true partnership with your equine partners and companions to bring insight to people when they seek it. Your suggested activities to your clients of meditation, breathing, and tuning in to natural surroundings surpass the standard practices in Equine-Assisted practices. Since reading your book, I’ve changed some of my own techniques in working with my equine friends and saw immediate results. Thank you!!!!

This is a wonderful book. Part memoir, part study of the relationship between humans and horses and how they can help us to heal, learn and grow. I galloped (pun intended) through this book, because I wanted to know more about Pam's incredible story and also loved reading about the many people she has helped over the years through her therapy. A truly inspiring book.

A fascinating read!
I don't really have much contact with horses, but was interested to read this, as horseriding is a hobby of my granddaughter's, which she has just decided to make her career.
After reading this book, I can understand her love of horses and all (well, some) that this involves.
Pam Billinge gives an insight to the intelligence and understanding of these wonderful animals, their healing powers to the human race.
The sign of a really good book for me is that I am unable to begin another book for a few days - I have not read a book now in the last week (unheard of for me) - I just wanted to continue savouring the flavour!
Absolutely loved it and would recommend to anyone.
