...two words that tell Frederick Starks his fate is sealed in this godforsaken prison. His estranged wife, whom he loves and hates, depending on the day, is dying. His family is in trouble. They need him—NOW—and he’s all but useless to them. His attorney isn’t giving up, but Starks is.
Despite his despair, he has two scores to settle, with the inmate who killed his son and the one who killed his friend. Starks soon realizes his situation is worse than he imagined. Betrayals are rampant and gut-wrenching. But it gets worse. A war is brewing among inmates, and a deadly conspiracy is revealed. Starks acts based on the belief that he knows who’s behind it. He’s wrong. He believes he knows who to trust. He’s wrong about that, as well—mistakes he pays for in ways that are unfathomable.
As threats against him escalate, his attorney announces the judge who denied his appeal is dead. Is there a chance he’ll get out, or is he destined to spend the rest of his life in misery? Regardless of the outcome, Starks is determined to avenge friends and loved ones. Yet, he wonders if exacting revenge will cost him more than he can afford, and if it will mean the end of any hope of redemption?

When The Phoenix Rises (The Starks Trilogy #3)
the final installment of the Starks trilogy COMING SOON! NOVEMBER 10, 2017
The book opens with Frederick Starks, finding out his appeal is denied! His wife, Kaylan is dying, his three kids need him and his family is in trouble. He has to get out of prison!
Starks’ lawyer, Michael Parker has given up. The judge is firm on not overturning his original verdict, even based on new evidence. He was in for fifteen years.
“Don’t lose hope, Starks.”
Stark’s son Kane Sandler had been beaten and killed with a steel pipe. His son had committed a crime to be near his father. Kane was killed to get back at Starks.
Starks comment: “One of the lessons I’ve learned in here-is that prison is a petri dish of pain.”
Starks had his own “crew” (members of the gang) with Starks as their captain. Now he has to deal with dangerous cons and guards that have to be paid in order to provide him with protection, and friends that can never be trusted.
Even with all his anguish, Starks' sole focus was on retribution. He must deal with the inmate who killed his son and the one who killed his friend. But not everything is as it seems! A war is building up among the inmates. Everyone must choose sides. Betrayals and lies run widespread and a deadly conspiracy is revealed. But who can Starks trust…and what if he is wrong? And for that he must pay the price!
But in the middle of all this turmoil, his attorney announces the judge who denied his appeal is dead. So now is this his chance for redemption…or is he destined to spend the rest of his life in prison?
Is he a survivor? Would the phoenix rise again?
Highly recommend this trilogy for fans of psychological thrillers.
Many thanks to the author for the advance digital copy of this crime thriller.
The almost eighteen months Frederick Starks had spent in Sands, the prison which was leeching him of life, would be over if the phone call he was waiting on was positive. But when it came, the words he hadn’t wanted to hear were right there – his appeal was denied. His destiny – to live out the full term of his sentence in Sands; that’s if he lasted that long…
As Starks built his crew – the men who would always have his back – his sole focus was on retribution. Deaths weren’t uncommon in Sands, but when people he cared about were taken out, he took it personally. And so, he focused on finding the culprit, and eliminating that person or persons. But it wouldn’t be easy. Betrayal in prison was as common as day turned to night – to save one’s family, a person would do just about anything. So, trust was something that was earned – something Starks was careful about. What would happen if he trusted the wrong person? And how would he know if he called it incorrectly?
With Starks’ estranged wife dying and his children going off the rails, Starks had to rely on his wits, and the only friends he had left on the outside. What would happen to the man who had let his temper get the best of common sense, with the worst of outcomes? Was it destiny or would the phoenix rise again?
When the Phoenix Rises is the third and final in the Starks Trilogy by Nesly Clerge, and another brilliant, twisted and brutal rendition of the worst man can do to his fellow man; and how sometimes good and evil become a messed-up mixture of emotions, hate and love. For fans of the psychological thriller, this trilogy is one of the best! Highly recommended.
With thanks to the author for my digital ARC to read and review.
They say prison changes a man, and for Frederick Starks, nothing could be truer. Starks has learned to use his success in the outside world to survive within the prison walls, but the price has been heartbreakingly high. Now his appeal has been denied and his last hope for freedom has faded. The man who thought only of himself first has changed, but not all of it has been for the better. People he left behind need him and he is realizing just how much he needs them. Even as his powerbase is becoming unstable and the target on his back is growing with every hour, he still has some scores to settle and it will require distasteful, but necessary alliances because war is coming within the prison walls and he has no choice but to win. His gut tells him he knows how to stop it, but betrayals and a bad call on his part could prove him wrong.
When it is revealed that his denial could be overturned, Starks knows it is now or never to settle all scores then hope he lives long enough to touch the faces of those he loves. Yes, he is a changed man, but has he lost his soul in the transformation? Who will he be WHEN THE PHOENIX RISES?
What a ride this trilogy has been! Nesly Clerge has grit in his writing. Frederick Starks is one of the most compelling characters I have ever met. He is no saint, never claims to be but he definitely blurs the line between good and evil with his raw and flawed humanity. His metamorphosis from a hard-hearted and pampered mogul to a convicted prisoner who learned the true meaning of loyalty, strength and real fear is riveting. From the ashes that were his life to his rise to power in a dog-eat-dog world proves the strength of Nesly Clerge’s writing ability! You will believe you are there, you will feel what these characters feel. If you are looking for a story that may not be pretty, but is filled with non-stop, razor-taut tension, this is the trilogy to sink your teeth into! As it tests the limits of one man’s ability to change, it will test our limits to understand the sense of justice behind bars. Powerful and magnetic reading created in bold and dramatic strokes.

This is the third and final instalment I am so sad. Upon reading book one in 2015 I was hesitant as this was a new author to me and always worry in case the book isn't to my taste, but it was, more than to my taste.
Book two which I read in 2016, was another 5 * for me.
Book three made its way to me, I was so anticipating this final instalment but knowing its the final part was also saddening. And when I got to the last page, this was it.
Frederick's story was no more.
Read the book in sequence its a MUST to do it that way to follow through in the right order.
International book award winner -Gold medal. What can I say!
Readers favourite 2017 best general fiction.
Frederick wants out of prison. Who wouldn't. Prison changed people. They also come into contact with other criminals harder than themselves. How to survive?
APPEAL DENIED.
Frederick not only want to get out of prison, he NEEDS to get out. He has serious reasons and concerns. His wife is dying, he has three children that need him home.
Even though new evidence was presented at the appeal the judge said 'no'. Frederick's lawyer gives up.
Frederick Stark [known as STARK] made a crew up in prison, hes lived hard in there and had to take some control and now has a kind of 'respect' that is only granted in prison from others in there, but, who is trustworthy? Hes the captain of his crew, but are they true.
But Stark has to be careful he uses bribes on guards to protect him and on inmate, but can any of them be trusted, would you trust them?
Stark is wary, he is oh so careful.
It was tragic for me to read that his son Kane committed a crime only for him to be sent to prison to be near his Father, but someone beat Kane to death with a metal pipe to get back at Stark, who was it.
Stark is out for revenge.
The trouble is, who did it, who knows who did it, whose brave enough to leak it out.
Who does Stark trust, and can he trust even if someone tells him things, could it be lies.
What conspiracy is going on? What is the new war that is breaking out?
Just when this is all going on, it comes to his attention that the judge who denied his release is now dead, will Stark ever get out of prison. Could he re-appeal?
There is violence, there is anarchy and brutality. Where will your compassion lie, if any. Who is worthy of your time and emotion, hate, love, twisted and the best trilogy I have read.
This is the 3rd in a trilogy and I highly recommend starting at the very beginning. Without giving away anything from the first two books, Frederick Starks is in prison. His appeal has been denied and he's looking at spending 15 years behind bars.
To say he is desolate is not even close. His wife is dying from cancer and his 3 children are in dire need of parents. His mother is trying to help as much as possible .. but Starks really wants out ... now. His attorney has not given up, but that doesn't mean much.
The situation behind bars is almost unbearable. All the inmates are choosing sides waiting to go to war. Starks has one side and the man who killed Starks' friend by stabbing him to death has the other.
And every day only get worse. Inmates on both sides are being murdered .. and blaming each other and swearing revenge. Everyone is denying being responsible ...so who is? A psychopathic inmate? Guard?
There is no lack of violence and movement in this book. Most of the characters are brutal, what you would naturally expect behind prison walls. Some you will root for, some you won't, some will be worthy of your compassion, but all will be unforgettable.
Many thanks to the author for the advance digital copy of this crime thriller. Opinions expressed here are unsolicited, unbiased and entirely my own.
Frederick Starks is in prison, serving time for attacking his wife's lover. Starks has not given up hope of getting released from prison, especially since his family needs him. Meanwhile, during his time in prison, Starks has risen to the top of the inmate chain. He has a group of men he helps protect, and they protect him. He has been in prison long enough that others are ready to see him fall. He must protect himself and his place in the hierarchy, before everything he's worked for falls apart.
The 3rd book in The Starks Trilogy. I started to like Starks a little bit in this one. I still don't like the guy, but he finally started to realize not everything was someone else's fault. He made decisions during his life that led to his current situation, and that sunk in a little.
This was an entertaining series. The first book had Stark's trial and introduction to prison, and the following two books were about his prison life. Maximum security is a hard life, with everyone in the prison out for themselves. An intriguing crime mystery trilogy about prison life, told from a tough and controlling business man's point of view.
This is the final book in the Frederick Starks Trilogy. I must admit that I had mixed feelings on receipt of this book. I was desperate to know what happens, but, at the same time, I didn't want his story to end. Selfish, I know.
Starks has problems inside, and outside of, Sands prison. Oh boy, does he have problems... The underlying tension of war in his block which could be started by a look in the wrong direction, the twists and turns, the devastating betrayal of trusts, and the help which comes from a surprising source. All of which his readers know - and welcome - as Nesly Clerge trademark shockers. I physically gasp at these times, apparently...
Starks is a great multifaceted character, and, of course, prison in general contains all shapes, sizes, orientations and motivations. Clerge's written talents lie in all aspects - the descriptions of the violence, the human interest, and the emotive side of the characters. Everything feels honest and truthful.
The challenge in this final book was to ensure that Starks dealt with as much as he could in his own unique way. Has Clerge been successful? I would say a resounding, "Yes", but you should decide for yourself. I desperately want to see Starks' wish come to fruition. I'm not ashamed to say that I cried on many occasions whilst reading this as my heart was in my mouth. I felt as though I had been through everything alongside Starks. Fantastic piece of work. Can't wait to read Clerge's next book.
Don't hesitate, I highly recommend reading the whole series. You won't regret it.
I was given an eARC which I voluntarily read and reviewed. The review is honest and the opinions are all my own.
MA. Sands Correctional Facility (C-Block). Michael “Mike” Parker (attorney) had some bad news for Frederick Starks (inmate). His appeal had been denied again. Later, CO Stone & CO Roberts had to take him down he was out-of-control in his cell. Frederick found out Kane Sandler (19) was his son. While spending time in the same prison he had been beaten to death by a steel pipe.
Inmates: Ronald “The Dragon” Jackson, Pete, Tommy, Stinky, & Tank were discussing Frederick’s role as their prison gang leader. Matthew Demory (counselor) was all ears for Frederick who he hadn’t seen in a long time. CO Simmons & CO Jakes broke up the prison yard scuffle between Seth (A/A, inmate gang leader) & Fredrick. The 2 CO’s were quite sure 1-day one of their lives would end. Fredrick went to see Gabe Bianchi (elderly inmate) for some strong advice. Next stop Red Brunson (prison employee) office. 1-day Jeffrey Davis (mixed race, Frederick’s BMF) came to see him. Frederick got news that Paco (inmate) had been strung up in the gym. CO Roberts took him to see Warden Spencer. Fredrick’s family on the outside consisted of: Kayla Starks (wife, terminal cancer), Blake (14, Kayla’s gay son), Nathan (son) Kaitlin (daughter), Kyle (5, drowned), & Lynn Starks (Kayla’s Mom).
What did CO Roberts tell Fredrick? What happened to Dr. Garrett Hall? There was a huge skirmish in the prison yard. Who would survive?
Warning: This book contains extremely graphic adult content, violence, or expletive language &/or uncensored sexually explicit material which is only suitable for mature readers. It may be offensive or have potential adverse psychological effects on the reader.
I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one. All thoughts & opinions are entirely my own.
A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written prison thriller book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great prison thriller movie, or better yet a mini TV series. To be continued? A very easy rating of 5 stars.

I’ve been lucky enough to have been a reader of this series since the beginning, and for that I’m extremely grateful. Nesly Clerge is an awesome author that combines great story structure and the psychology of his characters into a fantastic overall story.
Throughout his series, we’re taken on the fall and gradual rise of Frederick Starks as he comes to terms with his mistakes that cost him just about everything he holds dear. One of my pet peeves is when characters don’t learn anything and are rewarded with their heart’s desire, and thankfully, these stories do the exact opposite. They make it harder than imaginable for the characters to achieve their goals, and for that I’m eternally grateful to the author.
As mentioned before, Starks had previously refused to learn more than a few snippets of what he needed to learn and he paid the price for it. In this book, we get to see him finally break away from his own shackles and move forward with his life. The biggest obstacle is, of course, others don’t want him to succeed.
Aside from Starks, the rest of the characters are well rounded, fleshed out individuals that make the story believable and pulled me right in. I was sad to see a couple of their stories end, while others added their voices to balance things out and help the story move forward.
The setting is a typical prison type of blandness, but the author tells it in a way that we quickly and feel like we’re eating lunch with Starks or sitting in his cell pondering what to do next. This really drew me in and brought the prison and the inmates and guards to life.
The writing is well balanced between description and action, keeping it fast-paced while slowing down at the right moments. To add to the drama of Starks’ existence is an awesome bit of mystery and intrigue that is a slight change from the previous books. While mystery elements in the previous installments were like a punch to the stomach, this story has a few “How’d I miss that?” or “No way!” moments that really tied things together. Sorry, no spoilers beyond that. 🙂
My only complaint is that I wanted more and to see how things fared in Starks’ future. Despite that, I think the story probably ended how it should have, so take my critism with a large grain of salt.
Overall, this is an amazing read and I highly recommend Nesly Clerge and his books if you’re into intoxicating and fun reads.
Well, that was a fitting finale to the Starks trilogy by Nesly Clerge. Starks has just had an appeal knocked back and depression sets in as he faces the prospect of the next 15 years at Sands Correctional Facility. He figures he now has nothing to lose so he vows revenge on Seth for the death of his son Kane.
But, as always, things are not so simple at Sands. Seth has a large 'crew' and Starks needs to recruit to have any hope, but his lethargy is worrying to his own crew. What is going on? Is the dragon running out of puff? Starks is beset by his internal demons. And everyone else is on tenterhooks as they await the inevitable war. Starks is also re-assessing his feelings about his wife, Kayla, who is dying of cancer. He realises that it is his own actions that have brought him here and are preventing him from supporting his wife and children. So his demons are numerous and tearing him in all directions. What should he do? But is it all too late for Starks as he becomes the victim of a stunning betrayal that threatens his very life? Salvation comes in the form of a man he has vowed to hate, Luke Thompson, who has come to Sands for the murder of Garrett Hall, Starks' friend. Thompson's example seems to help Starks make sense of his own confusion about right and wrong.
As I said, a fitting finale. I like that the author included the Luke Thompson character (from his other book - The Anatomy Of Cheating). And we finally see a bit more of Ethan. Dangerous psychopath that he is, he is nevertheless an interesting guy and I couldn't help liking him regardless. What does that say about me? I'd still like to know what makes him tick. So - great plot, great characters and great consideration of the issues of justice, morality and loyalty. I'll be very interested to see what's next for Nesly Clergy. I received a complimentary copy of this book and agreed to review it.
This final part of the Starks trilogy was the perfect ending to a very good story. Growth was noticed in Starks as his imprisonment taught him valuable lessons. Storyline continued to hold my attention with relative content, interesting situations & characters. This is a well written series I highly recommend
Starks is still in prison, his wife Kayla is dying and his children need him. He has to get out. He is recruiting his crew as his opponents could turn on him at any time and he has to stay alive. This is the third part of a trilogy and the other two books need to be read in order to understand the circumstances. In part one (When the Serpent Bites) Starks in sentenced to 15 years in prison. He is a rich man and soon has some clout amongst the prisoners and finds a few he can trust. In book two (When the Dragon roars) Starks is at an all time low having tried to take his own life a couple of times, until suddenly he finds his long lost son, who is then killed shortly afterwards. In this book three Starks is trying to find justice and to keep his wife alive as much as he can from being incarcerated. A man who has to change within the limits of prison and of his mind behind bars. A well written, descriptive read. I voluntarily chose to read this ARC and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased
Couldn't put the book down. Had read the other two and waited anxious u sly for this final ending. Could not imagine how suspenseful It was going to be. Many surprises
This book is the final book in the Starks trilogy and I for one am sorry its finished.
I loved all the characters in the book even the bad ones. In the last book Starks son is killed to get back at him and starks is devastated his appeal for release is denied and his wife Kaylan is dyeing from cancer his family needs him.... Stark is out for revenge on the death of his son who can stark trust?? Towards the end of the book I was wow didn't see that coming the ppl you think you can trust you cant in fact there was a few moments in the book like that... This Author is brilliant I have read all his books to date so far and need more..... Read this trilogy in order the ending is great I am hoping for a 4th book there must be one.....
When The Phoenix Rises (The Starks Trilogy Book 3)
Well worth the wait because I'm still inhaling, then exhaling for Starks, Blake, Nathan and Kaitlin's futures. Even the crew at Sands, especially my man Ethan, his inmate buddy. I 💘 this series and can't believe this book is ending. I know, I know, this is the end of the trilogy for Starks and his family/friends but...
P.S. When is your next set of 📚 coming out, Nesly Clerge? I can keep a secret, review a draft, proofreading...seriously. When?
Frederick Starks is going to war. After his final appeal is denied he has to plan his future on the inside. Even with all that his money can buy and two savage secret weapons, there are no guarantees that he will come out the other side of this alive, but things have to change. And he has to change. He has begun to realize that there are far too many discrepancies between the man he has been and the man he wants to be.
Full of lies, camaraderie, betrayals, corruption, secrets, and breathtaking revelations, the final book in The Starks Trilogy will keep you enthralled all the way through.
The ending is fantastically satisfying, wholly unexpected, and fitting. It's difficult to write a series conclusion that holds its own against the rest of the story and is pleasing to the reader, but not entirely predictable ... yet Nesly Clerge has done just that.
All of these characters came to life for me throughout the series and I will miss them. I loved seeing Stark's side of the situation with Chelsea and Garrett, whose story you can read in another of Nesly Clerge's fascinating books, The Anatomy Of Cheating.
I'm so thankful that Nesly Clerge decided to become an author, all of his books so far have graced my favorites shelf and I'm sure all of his future books (hopefully there will be many more) will also hold a place there. If there were an option to vote a book series to be turned into big screen movies the Stark trilogy would fully have my vote. If you don't read them you're missing out.
I received a free copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Yes, the story from the 1st 2 books continues into this one. And, definitely believe it is more of the same from the 1st 2 books.
The ending might in some ways be “what’s expected”, in other ways — who knows?
Throughout this 3-book series, The Author has presented a character of apparently unlimited wealth, even and/or especially when he’s not gainfully employed. I don’t know anyone in real life who can spend as much money as the Starks character, but the dollars just roll out of him on one unlimited expense after another — THIS helps make the character, but it’s unbelievability is also what ruins it for The Reader.
In a similar vein, the institutional Commissary that Starks supports, must by the size of a large grocery store, especially since it seems to stock and supply an endless amount of pre-made sandwiches and other food. It’s interesting how the Commissary is so central to this story, and that it’s seen as a wide, open, always available part of the prison — rather than a simple privilege that provides supplies.
Again, the above extremes written throughout The Author’s plots — and others, that are far more violent — are just way, way too much to believe.
This is not normally my kind of book. But I have to say for a new author these were excellent books. I got so absorbed in them that I read all three in three days. I kept needing to know what was happening next. At times I completely was on Starks side and at times I felt myself totally annoyed with him. There were a lot of twists and turns. Unexpected situations kept popping up that left me shocked. Every time I was sure what was about to happen, was not what happened. And I love being surprised by something I didn't see coming.
My only complaint would be that at times it was a little long and drawn out in parts going on and on about his wife saying the same thing over and over. But I do get that it is how he felt and that he needed to come to terms with it. I do get that his feelings were so ingrained in him that it was driving his life and choices. So it definitely wasn't a deal breaker for me.
I liked the way it ended and felt it wrapped things up nicely. There was nothing that left me wondering what the heck happened next.
This author is definitely on my radar now. Awesome job.
Starks is denied parole, and his life on the inside of prison is more dangerous than ever. He struggles with his 'old self', trying to be responsible and take care of his family; but his 'new self' is trying to stay alive. Full of twists and turns, unexpected friends and surprising enemies, the third book of the Starks trilogy is an exciting read. But the ending!! Aaaargh! Now there HAS to be a 4th book!
In his dramatic final installment of the trilogy, Nesly Clerge does not disappoint, creating an exciting whirlwind that held me rapt throughout.
Starks “seeing himself reflected in the mirrors of people he’d always detested and believes he had nothing in common with” gains enough self-awareness and empathy to chart a new direction in his life. With so many moving parts, Starks can hardly catch his breath, and neither can his fans. I’m going to miss that crazy son of a bitch.
I absolutely loved this book series. This is definitely something I would go back and reread. The supporting characters were great, and I loved the development of Starks’ character throughout the three books. It’s not often that I feel conflicted about what should happen to the main character, but Nesly Clerge does a phenomenal job of keeping the reader on the edge of their seat. I could see this being an entertaining TV drama, and I definitely wish that would happen. Highly recommend!
I read the entire series to my wife over a one year period, as time permitted. The story of Starks and this period of his life both in and out of prison left us wondering about what was going to happen next. All three books were great.
Having spent a part of my career in forensic mental health in a county jail,i was chilled by the authenticity of the frightful reality of this brutal novel.
