A ruthless warrior, a curious mage, and an ancient secret that could destroy them both...
When Tamas discovers the long-forgotten ruins of the Nystrean Mor—an ancient and powerful civilization—he's certain the incredible find will lead to fame and respect. Instead it leads to the end of a Boa Visk sword, its poison blade biting his throat. Tamas, a scholar mage without the power to defeat the Boa Visk warriors that surround him, is certain he'll die unnoticed in the haunted Tyrasha Forest, where no one will venture to find him. And the secrets he's spent his life trying to uncover will die with him. Until a mysterious swordsman drops from the trees and saves his life...
Damen has only two things left in his life: his dragon-forged swords and his personal vendetta against the Boa Visk. The monstrous beings who've subjugated humans all across the continent have taken everything from him, leaving him broken and alone, with nothing to sustain him but the death of any Boa Visk who wander into his forest. But when he sees their captive mage, poisoned and weak, he hasn't the heart to let the man die alone. Compassion is his first mistake. The kiss he shares with Tamas is his second. With emotions he believed long dead flaring back to life, and the foolish mage destroying the walls Damen worked so hard to erect, Damen is certain his next mistake will be his last. But the secrets of the ruins that compel Tamas might be more dangerous than they imagined, more dangerous even than the Boa Visk, who have no intention of allowing them to leave the forest alive...
AC Fox writes m/m romance that shows us the beauty of real passion and real men, in all their glory. Alpha or beta, old or young, out or still struggling, AC’s characters prove that love–between long-time lovers or strangers on the train–truly will conquer all.
I loved this! I’ve had several of this authors books on my wish list for some time now but this is the first time I’ve caved and bought one. I will admit I skipped the first few books in this series to avoid some the debut writing issues (the author guarantees these can be read as a standalone), but I definitely think I will go back and read them.
The world building in this book was perfect, it was detailed with lots of depth but I never felt like there were large information dumps slowing down or drowning it out. I mean there was magic, and different cultures and specifies and so many other things tied together in this book that it would have been very easy for author to slip up, or for the story to drag on.
The characters were even better...
He was not handsome, but his face was striking. Unforgettable.
I love imperfect men... and both Damian and Tamas were perfectly imperfect. Damian was battle hardened and scared, I imagine he had some serious crows feet around his eyes from stress and fatigue rather than love and laughter. Tamas was scholar that never really fit in or stood out, he was pretty much described as forgettable. ***swoons*** I seriously love that... I mean perfect looking guys and gals are great and the idea of rock hard abs and a perfect smile will always inspire naughty thoughts and sell romance, but bringing together the “others”, the dad bods, the scared, the challenged and the forgettable’s... that’s when I find romance is always at its best.
After all my swooning over here you would wonder why only 4 stars? Well the answer is while I loved the world building and the characters, I would have preferred a little more depth and development in the romance. The romance was built with a solid foundation but somewhere in between it went and perfect build up to sacrifice and love. Idk... I just wanted a little bit more in the middle.
