Equipping the Equippers: Handbook for Raising Up Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors, & Teachers

Rate this book
The topic of fivefold ministry—the apostle, prophet, teacher, pastor, and evangelist appointed by Christ to equip His church (Eph. 4:11)—was central to two movements in previous the Shepherding Movement in the 1970s, and the New Apostolic Reformation in the 1990s and early 2000s. While both movements saw important elements of this ministry restored to the church, they also saw misunderstandings and abuses that prevented the fivefold from becoming more widely established in doctrine and practice.

Yet a fresh wave of fivefold restoration is coming to the body of Christ—and with it, fresh understanding about why this ministry is so critical to the growth, health, and success of both the local and global church. In Equipping the Equippers, Dr. Jonathan Welton offers a wealth of insight accumulated through his study of and experience with the fivefold ministry, and presents biblical support for the

• Each fivefold leader has a God-given metron to care for
• Each fivefold leader has a unique measure of grace
• Anointing and grace are not the same thing
• Fivefold leaders “adjust the bones” in the body of Christ
• According to Paul’s analogy, the fivefold functions as the waste and reproductive systems in the body of Christ
• How to dismantle 11 common myths of fivefold ministry
• Seven things that spiritual fathers and mothers should and shouldn’t be doing
• All fivefold graces are available to both genders
• How to begin to implement the fivefold in your local church

The fivefold is not meant to come and go with movements, but to be forever established as the equipping ministry in the church. Equipping the Equippers will enable church leaders and believers alike to pursue the fivefold with solid biblical teaching and purpose, and most importantly, begin to receive a fresh flow of the fivefold graces in their lives and churches.

A mistitled book

Dr. Welton clearly views himself as an apostle and clearly writes about it from a charismatic (NAR) perspective. I had many checks in my spirit regarding his view as an apostle.

But he does have a very clear understanding about lines of authority, spheres of influence and women in ministry. But unfortunately Dr. Welton, despite his language, still believes in hierarchy in church life. When Paul says Apostles are first we can read it two ways; first as in the head or first as in order of sequence of function. He also fails to highlight the missional aspect of Apostles being church planters first, then raising up others. He focuses on the latter for this book.

If you want to understand how they 5 fold can work together skip this book, there is minimal information. If you want to understand Apostles as governing authorities this is a good book for that.

Personally to understand Apostles more clearly and a more scholarly approach I would RECCOMEND Don Dents book on Apostles. Much better and clearer.

Some nice points along the way, but this is speaking into a US culture of one-man-pastor shows (not solely a US issue, but...) and where there’s been a lack of New Testament ecclesiology, but spoiled by sweeping statements and assumptions that veer off-road in application, at least without further definitive justification for these points. Practicalities towards the end are very prescriptive, and an appendix on a hot potato issue is full of eisegesis whilst missing vital appropriate texts from the discussion.

Incredible book.

Very Very good. I love the depth of this books. Jonothan truly showed his range! Incredibly liberating for women desiring to be leaders. This book has truly given me a fantastic understanding of my Apostolic gifting. It provides biblical understanding throughout the 5 fold ministries. Even new concepts around Metromes. Providing more understanding around the ideal life giving church structure for the 5-fold ministry to flourish.
