This novel takes place during Kentucky Derby week. It took me a few chapters to get into the story; I was so turned off by the amount of language that Mr. Hayes used. The descriptions of the event itself and all the pageantry that surrounds it are what kept me interested. The plot was also interesting: someone trying to fix the Derby so that their horse would win by a multitude of nefarious deeds. All the characters have their flaws, however. There's no real "hero." Overall, it was okay, but not great. Fair warning: Animals do die in this book.
