I love, love, love this book I found at a garage sale when my children were little. The first-person narrator, whose name we never learn, has a wonderful, loving relationship with his traditional grandmother. He relates many interesting things about her and the things they enjoy doing together. However, he has a friend named Kevin, whose grandmother is the queen of outlandishness--a skydiving, DIY Honda mechanic, judo teacher, former circus-performer grandma, who brings Kevin peanut butter soup when he's sick. In the end, the narrator admits some skepticism about Kevin's grandma. I love the dedication: "To Gil, who never lies--just makes the truth more interesting."

“Albert’s Gift for Grandmother” is a story about a little turtle name Albert who wants to get his grandmother the perfect gift for her birthday. Albert’s family invites their grandmother over to celebrate her birthday. Alert feels left out when his siblings and parents each gives their grandmother wonderful gifts while he can’t come up with a special gift of his own. After much thought, Albert comes up with the perfect gift for his grandmother - his own baby blanket to keep his grandmother nice and warm. This book is about family and caring. It teaches children that gift giving is not all about giving gifts rather it’s about the thought that counts. The illustrations of this book are beautifully done. The use of warm colors invites the readers to be part of the story. The realistic facial expressions of the characters show a wide range of feelings like playfulness, excitement, frustration, and happiness. This is a great book that teaches a valuable lesson to kids and adults. Target audience: ages 4 – 8.

Albert’s grandmother comes and visits him and his family on her birthday. Albert’s siblings all start to give their grandmother presents for her birthday but Albert doesn’t have one so he starts to feel bad. He wishes that he could give his grandmother the gifts that his siblings are giving them but he doesn’t know how to make or do the things they did for grandmother. Albert finally thought of what to get his grandmother. Since his grandmother has been cold he gave her his baby blanket to keep so whenever she gets cold she has something to keep her warm. Grandmother loved the gift and that made Albert even happier. This book shows that even if you don’t have a lot to give to someone it’s the thought that counts.

This story is a cute story because it is about a little turtle who wants to get his grandmother a nice present because the rest of his family has. Albert does nice things for his grandmother trying to show off and be better although a present is a present and should be special no matter what anyone says. It's always the thought that counts!

I loved this book! What attracted me to it first off was the illustrations by Doug Cushman. I LOVE turtles, so that is why I picked it up.

I love the story. It is clear, well-written, and has a charming tale of what Albert finally gave his grandmother for her birthday.

My grandma bought this book for me about 33 years ago...I still own it...I still love it. My son loves it...I hope he might pass it on as well.
Really, whoever heard of peanut-butter soup? :)
