Kind of an opposites attract story. Nerd(and aspiring research doctor) Seth and Doctor Casey "meet" at work and Casey starts pursuing the virgin Seth. After four weeks of working together Casey didn't remember Seth's name or even recognize him? Come on, Casey, you helped interview the guy.
Seth's parents are horribly homophobic and there are a couple of ugly scenes.
It was nice to see Seth come out of his shell a bit but he was very naive, this was just an okay read for me.
Okay so this book was something I was rather excited about. I had expecting something sappy, sweet and that would leave me really happy and glad I read this. Unfortunately I am pissed instead.
Things that bugged me!
*Seth was a virgin in this (not normally a huge issue) but Casey had apparently had a lot of experience, and had been in love. It bothered Seth but I never saw much issue with it from him. *The overly bigoted parents. *The lack of an I love you. *Casey expecting Seth to drop school stuff for him. Yes Casey, the doctor.
I really wanted to like this and maybe the whole virgin at 22 thing won't annoy others (yes it annoyed me because I think he was a virgin in every single way). But it felt unrealistic that there was jealousy from that and it wasn't shown.
I thought/hoped this would be a sweet little romance that would give me some warm feels and a happy feeling as I drifted off to sleep (I do most of my reading at night.). I’m so sad to say I feel let down. It started out ok. The makeover was a fun thing, but I was a little put off when Casey noticed Seth after that. I was getting the whole “you only matter when you’re pretty” vibe, and I don’t care for that. Seth was still Seth, even with new glasses and darker hair. This led me to feel sorry for Seth. It made me sad to think he wasn’t good enough for anyone. From that, I was a little miffed at Casey. He wanted to have lunch with/dance with/go out with the hot Seth, but he couldn’t even remember him from his interview.
I started to come around after a while and began to relax into their relationship. Casey did treat Seth with some reverence, especially when it came to sex. He took it (somewhat) slow and didn’t push. Seth was the one who initiated a lot of their encounters. The scenes were hot, and I enjoyed reading them, but I didn’t connect with the rest of the story.
There was a slight conflict near the middle of the book, but it felt forced, almost as if it was added after the fact. It was resolved quickly and no further mention of it was made. Also, Seth’s father is homophobic. VERY homophobic. He said some terrible things and treated Seth with such contempt. However, once again, it felt like his words, especially the little speech he gives Seth when he brings Casey over for dinner, were written to create more drama than necessary.
Seth is, as his friend Ruby states, nondescript. He has been fairly invisible to date and Ruby wants to change that. So, make over time. After a new haircut, glasses and wardrobe, Seth is all set to go from virgin to not. Casey is a 32-year-old doctor in the practice where Seth works. After the makeover, Casey instantly notices and is interested in him. The story is mostly their trying to find their way together.
Seth is also dealing with extremely bigoted parents and I couldn’t understand why he bothered to go there. His mother is in denial, wanting him to grow out of his and his father is an outright homophobe who spews venom at him. Why is he putting himself (and Casey, eventually) through that?
Seth acts immature sometimes but Casey is overbearing, so that balances in a way. Jealousy and spying when you’ve been going out for a week seemed a bit much. While I was glad that Dad’s issue didn’t magically right things, it didn’t lend anything to the story for me.
This is a very uncomplicated novella that isn’t riveting and for me the ending seemed thrown on.
I forgot, that Seth made a brief appearance in Admiring Jesse, but I liked meeting their little group of friends again.
The story'srather cliched, but still very sweet and enjoyable. It's almost angst-free and I usually like these types of books. Add to that an age difference and I'm hooked ;)
The story is really quite pleasant and flows along nicely. It's not rife with drama and there are no fireworks, yet it is still quite a good read. This simply tells a story of two men who meet, fall in love and everything in between. Shawn Lane's writing style is smooth and clear, which I really quite enjoyed.
A Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Review An Alisa Review:
Rating: 4 stars out of 5
This was an adorable story. Seth has been the awkward geek since he was a teen and finally decides he wants to change his look. The next day Casey notices him and it looks as though his luck could be turning around.
We see everything from Seth’s point of view but we can mostly see Casey’s emotions through him. I felt for Seth that his parents don’t support his choices while even his friends see him as the geek. Casey grabs on to his connection with Seth with both hands but they both have to learn how to be a couple.
The cover art by Written Ink Designs is a great picture of Seth.

I read Shawn Lane before and I really liked what I read. I previously read Admiring Jesse, and the reason why I mention this is because we meet up with characters that we first met in Admiring Jesse. I really like when an author brings back characters from a previous book and lets the audience take a peek at how those characters are doing. For me this is something important as I enjoy discovering how previous characters are faring and is even more delightful to know that they are doing well. Yeha!
Seth is a young man still in college and trying to make ends meet, be successful in school, and deal with his parents who are not very accepting of his lifestyle. “It’s just a phase”. I can’t imagine what that must be like, having to constantly be questioned about what you know is right for you and being told that it’s wrong, that what you’re feeling is wrong and that doing what everyone else is doing is the right thing. Frustrating. His Mom is annoying, but his Dad was really judgmental and down right cruel to Seth. It really broke my heart.
The supporting characters Shawn creates are always a hoot and I was not disappointed in this book. His straight, female best friend gives him some helpful fashion and grooming advice to help him not disappear when he’s in a room. This really needed to happen because seriously, he was a hot mess.
Casey really is the sexier than sin doctor. He’s older then Seth yes, but he knows what Seth is experiencing and has similar feelings and growing pains and they both find out they have a lot more in common than previously believed. Casey is a man comfortable in his own skin and is a successful doctor. He doesn’t need to prove himself to anyone and likes to go after what he wants. He’s not scary or abrupt, or intimidating. He’s gentile, sensitive, smart and ambitious. He’s not fake and he’s not a player. These are all positive attributes.
Seth is young and immature, he’s trying to figure out what works for him and what doesn’t. He knows he’s gay and he knows what he wants to be, career wise, but who Seth “the man”, is he hasn’t quite figured out yet. I think living a little more, will help him settle in to who he wants to be. In the meantime, I think he’s a pretty cool guy, who I would like to get to know better.
Casey is older and more experienced, but they want to make their relationship work and I think that they have what it takes to make a go of it.
What I liked about this book is that even though Seth has insecurities and is inexperienced and young, he still is willing to take a chance with Casey. I think that with Casey Seth will continue to learn and grow and I hope that the two of them will grow together as a couple as well as individually.
Ah, actual cuteness is to be found here! This is really Seth’s story. Casey remains somewhat bland. It works for me, although this certainly is not the most exciting book around.
I enjoyed Seth’s terseness and his lack of external drama. I completely buy his lack of social graces, unlike with some supposedly shy or awkward characters in other books. Of course this makes it difficult to see what Casey sees in him (aside from his new looks). Mind you, I am not all that sure what Seth sees in Casey either, other than the fact that’s hot. (And he just happens to carry his high school picture around in his wallet? Huh. Okay, everyone has their… thing, I guess.) Even so, it’s a nice, slow, predominantly respectful seduction.
Seth is, in fact, surprisingly reasonable, while not diminishing the way he feels. Honest to himself, too. Not stupid. I realize I sound surprised by this but I haven’t always had the best experiences with this author. But Seth? Yeah, I really like him. (Although, to be fair, it’s usually the author’s tops that are jerks; the bottoms can be really engaging as far as I remember.)
Casey, well…
I do appreciate that Seth does not always give in to Casey’s attempts at superimposing his plans on Seth’s.
Something else I appreciate is the lack of sex scenes for the sake of it. Nothing gratuitous here. Everything we get has a point.
In closing I’ll just add that if it hadn’t been for that vague but persisting impression of Casey as supercilious and somewhat dismissive of Seth, my rating here would have gone up a star. If a book title contains the need for someone, I want to see it; and it this case I particularly wanted to see Casey humbled by what he feels for Seth – to provide a better balance for their relationship.
One of those "just okay" reads. Nothing bad but nothing too exciting either. A little more length and Casey's POV would have helped make Casey seem not quite so shaky a bet.
A fine read. It had it's sweet moments but it also had moments where I just didn't like how Casey was acting. It kind of irked my soul that Casey tried to get Seth to ditch class to meet him. Casey is a doctor and should know how important it is to have an education. Seth inner dialogue was amusing sometimes but once or twice felt kind of annoying.I liked how innocent Seth was and it was nice reading/seeing how the two MC's interacted with each other.
The ending felt very rushed and unfinished. Also, it kinda bugged me that Casey kept telling Seth to ditch class to see him, haha you'd think a doctor would understand the importance of attending school! It was a sweet first time type of story, but ultimately fell a bit flat...not my favorite thing from this author.
This started out cute and light but gained more depth later on. I loved Seth's character. Casey needed more character development but considering the book was written in Seth's POV, it was understandable. A nice read about opening up for first love/relationship but it needs a little oomph in the end.
