I just didn't like the hero. She was playing it safe trying to find out if it was him that had her kidnapped, I didn't like that part either, and she was trying to protect her son. And he is betrayed by it. I just was like why? She was using her head you moron but he then plotted to keep his son. And when she said I love you and he looked away, that was my final straw. He is definitely not a great hero. Just not enjoying it at all. I can't believe I have it four stars first time around. Definitely not a great romance. Just an average one with a stupid hero.
Loved it! This book has it all: love, devotion, monogamous couple, redemption, a horrific kidnapping, amnesia, an extremely evil father, a daughter who wants to believe in said evil father but doesn't know who she can trust...a loving husband, a secret baby, half-siblings connecting after not knowing his father had two families and it just goes on and on. It kept me on the edge of my seat.
Caroline Degraff and her husband took separate flights returning from their honeymoon. She arrives home first and was kidnapped and left with amnesia from the drugs that were administered to her. During her captivity, she discovers she's pregnant but has no memory whatsoever about the father of said child is or if she was married or in a relationship. Her father is her rescuer and takes her to a home of his...keeping it a secret that she had been found. He gaslights her to believe she had no boyfriend or husband and conceived from a one-night-stand. When she finally remembers her husband she is once again filled with disgusting lies from her father trying to convince her not to return to him. She is fraught with not knowing hardly anything about her and her life other than her name and who her family is.
Damon, who is a prince of a guy, is Caroline's husband who has been searching for her since the day she disappeared almost a year ago. He has traveled the world wide during this year...but someone was laying a false trail making it appear she had left him on purpose and he has no idea. There was false evidence submitted by someone that made it appear she left on her own accord so the police absolutely refused to file a missing person report or to even have her name placed on a missing persons list.
As a few of her memories start to return, it is unclear who the bad guy is...her father, her husband or someone else entirely who was close to her. Since her memories are so vague she shows up at the home she remembers she was to share with her new husband. He is absolutely shocked to see her.
When he welcomes her lovingly she pretends her amnesia is worse than it is to see if she can discover if her husband had been behind her kidnapping. She feels she must do this before she lets him know he now has a 6-week old son. He is just as suspicious of her as she is him. What a great journey this was.
Okay...I did it. I sat and read this twice in one sitting. It was that good...honest...I promise...don't miss it! Even without reading the others in the series that came before this one, it was easy to understand everything. I didn't feel lost a single time. Obviously I highly recommend this book!!!
Fairly decent. Hey you all know I'm an amnesia junkie. The timeline seemed wonky here. At first you think she's pretty advanced in her pregnancy when she gets off the island but later you think maybe not. The thing that really held this story back though is that the hero get so instantly pissed that the heorine who is recovering from amnesia and is not real certain of him and has legitimate reason to question his commitment to her hides knowledge of their baby from him for 2 days. I mean she thinks he might have had her kidnapped. He was so in love with her and searched for her long and hard but didn't take his phone with him as he searched the world for her. Why wouldn't he keep it with him in case she called? He suspected that she had been kidnapped. That just didn't make any sense. And after a year of her being gone while he searched desparately for her, he decides he doesn't love or trust her anymore because she didn't tell him first thing about the baby. She came to him as soon as she remembered him and held off 2 days while she tried to remember more and decide if she could trust him. I think if she had handed her baby to him first off she would have been an idiot.

I'm surprise this book is in the Desire line and not Intrigue. It had a very good suspense track with the MCs trying to figure out who had kidnapped Caroline and how, though it wasn't hard to figure out the culprit. I was very disturbed by the amount she'd been drugged, that too in her pregnant state.
On the romance front, even though both MCs were very nice, the romance didn't really vow me. For major part of the book there was a big disconnect between them fuelled by their distrust of one another. Nevertheless, I liked the part where Caroline walks into the board meeting and takes control. I also liked the friendly exchange between the brothers and half-brother and their wives. Loved the epilogue too.
Overall, it was a nice read. Am I right in thinking the next book is on Gabe and Victoria?
Caroline McNeill doesn't remember anything of the past year, so showing up at her husband's mansion is a little daunting. Still, if it's the only way she'll be able to discover what happened to her, she's willing to do anything, even if it means deceiving the man she loves. However, when she learns the truth about her kidnapping and the person responsible for it, will she ever be able to trust anyone again or will she walk away from the man that she's falling in love with all over again?
This series encompasses an incredible array of characters, especially the men of the McNeill family, and I've got to say that this story is one of the best of the series. Really, it started off very intriguingly because of what has happened to the heroine and finding her way back to her husband is just what she needs to help her to realize who she can trust and who she can't. Then again, being with Damon again could help her immensely in every way -- to hopefully find her way back to who she was and hopefully help her uncover what happened. Will she ever discover the truth of what happened to her?
As for the dialogue, it was intense due to the main characters back stories, especially that of the heroine, because she's been through so much and is still suffering from what happened to her because she needs to know who was responsible to ever be able to heal from the horrible event that led to her amnesia and her missing the last year of her life. Will the hero be able to help her figure things out? Will anything or anyone she comes in contact with help bring her memories back? Moreover, the heroine is strong and brave in being able to deal with everything she discovers, no matter how harrowing. I also liked how she put her trust in the hero, even though it wasn't easy for her to in the beginning because of what she was thinking or had been led to believe.
While the hero, he's a good guy, smart, loyal and I liked how protective he was of the heroine, because she means everything to him. I also liked that he took her surprise well, despite being blindsided by her news and the lengths he went to in order to help the heroine fight for answers. I also liked that he put his trust in his half-brothers, men he's only recently learnt about and what they do together to help the heroine and right the wrongs of the past.
Overall, Ms. Rock has delivered another fantastic read for this series where the chemistry between this couple was wonderful; and the ending had me liking the lengths the hero goes to in order to protect the heroine and make sure she remains in his life forever. No way will he let their second chance at forever after slip through his fingers. However, it was the epilogue that wrapped this story up nicely, as the McNeill siblings are finally beginning to come together as a family. I would recommend Claiming his Secret Heir by Joanne Rock, if you enjoy second chance romances or books by authors Karen Booth, Andrea Laurence, Barbara Dunlop and Catherine Mann.
A few things before I start. I've been reading Ms. Rock since she started writing for Harlequin. It's been a while. Karen Rock is her sister in law. Yes, that Karen Rock who also writes for Harlequin. And yes, I read her books, too. I love both of their writing styles and they are as different as night and day. While Karen writes the sweeter side, Joanne likes to keep it spicy and I love that. Her Desire books never disappoint. Damon McNeill's book is one of those books that I eagerly waited for and I was sad when it was over.
We are introduced to Damon in the last book and I really felt for him and his quest to find Caroline. We get a sneak peek into that quest but it wasn't until the very end of it do we understand the depth that he will go to, to find her. Man, I don't think I've ever read a book that with just a few paragraphs can set up a book with that much grief, love, and determination to find the heroine. *sigh* With that in mind, the intro to Caroline in this one is kinda funny actually. I know, I shouldn't say that but once you read it, you will understand what I'm saying.
Ms. Joanne has written a true love story that ended so abruptly but quickly picks up with some unanswered questions in regards to Caroline. While reading the story, my heart just broke for Caroline. I've read some stories with some horrible fathers but her's takes the cake. I was surprised at the depths that he went through and the end...oh wait. I almost spoiled it but let's just say that Caroline, not Damon got the final say. Woo Hoo! These two had a long way to go but once they finally figured everything out, in the beginning, their romance and love for each other shined through.
Let's not forget about Lucas, their son. Oh, my. To say Damon was shocked would be the understatement of the year but again, Ms. Rock shows us how its done in the romance world with her writing and ability to not make the child a plot point but a real character in the book. Not to mention, that she brings Caroline's two brothers and sister into the mix and it was perfect. And Cam. Yes, that Cam. I still love him.
Again, I was bereft when this one ended. I know, you shouldn't get too attached to couples and their stories but Caroline and Damon's has stayed with for a while. NOTE: I read this one during the Christmas holiday and I've read it again. Yes, it's that good and again, their love story will forever be in my heart. Bring on the last McNeill. Oh wait, there are now more McNeills that have been discovered in...I'm not telling you THAT. You have to read the book.
Claiming His Secret Heir by Joanne Rock is sexy as hell, emotionally engaging, and fast-paced. Risks, danger, and intrigue...all in one perfect read. Themes such as second chances, new beginnings, love, and family are found.
A woman just married the man she loves. Returning back home, she finds her father in their house and then everything is blank. She wakes up with amnesia. Caroline can't remember her name or anything...until her sister finds her. From there, parts of her life come back to her. Yet, she still has no idea what happened or why. Nor who to trust. Running away from her father, Caroline takes a risk and finds her husband. She needs to find out what happened. Once, she can eliminate her husband from her suspect list, she'll share her story. Plus, there's a secret that Damon will want to know...
Damon never liked his wife's father. That man was manipulating and awful. Always trying to push Damon out of his business. However, Damon is a fighter and won't go down without fighting back. Damon tried looking for his wife, but Caroline's dad reassured the police that she kept in touch with him. Damon wanted to go after her, yet the father said she wanted distance. Damon let it go but he still hoped for Caroline to return.
Ten months later...they reunite but under terrible circumstances. Danger and temptation are surrounding them. Caroline was kidnapped and drugged. Damon blames her father...but Caroline can't believe that her father would be so evil...their passion still sizzles.
I fell in love with the characters instantly. Caroline's torture that she went through had me sympathizing with her. Plus, with the secret she has...and the Heat Damon creates within her...everything was explosive in all the right ways. Hot, heartfelt, and addictive. Overall, I recommend Joanne Rock's Claiming His Heir to all.
I received this copy from the publisher. This, is my voluntary review.
Damon McNeill used all the resources available to him to find his wife who disappeared shortly after their honeymoon. Her father claims Caroline wanted out of the marriage and nothing further to do with Damon. Imagine Damon’s shock when one year later, Caroline appears on his doorstep claiming amnesia.
Caroline McNeill is on the run. Kidnapped and drugged, she eventually escapes her captors and finds refuge with her father. However, Caroline’s memories are slowly returning and her father’s version of events is beginning to sound false. It’s up to Caroline to discover if Damon really did marry her for mercenary reasons or was theirs a love match.
My first introduction to Caroline and Damon was in Book #4 of the McNeill Magnates series when we hear about Damon’s attempts to locate his missing wife. This mystery remains unsolved until this book.
This is a second chance romance for Caroline and Damon following Caroline’s kidnapping. Standing in their way is the distrust each holds for the other given neither knows what specifically occurred, especially given Caroline’s amnesia.
Both Caroline and Damon independently decide to remain together for the sake of their family and until the mystery is solved. Their physical attraction is strong and they soon let passion override their reservations. Frustratingly, Caroline and Damon’s discussions tend to focus on the kidnapping plot and we rarely see them communicate their feelings towards each other until the end.
Concurrently, there is the storyline of who kidnapped Caroline. The culprit is obvious and while the person is ultimately caught, we never really understand the reasons for this person’s actions.
Readers who like Harlequin Desire books will likely enjoy this book and the continuing story of the extended McNeill family.
The moment I read the first page of “Claiming His Secret Heir” by Joanne Rock I knew I was going to love this book. Caroline McNeill returns after disappearing almost a year ago. Her husband, Damon McNeill, had done everything in his power to find her and when he sees her at the gate to the home they designed, he can’t believe it is really her. However, marring their reunion is that Caroline can only remember bits and pieces of her time with him.
Damon is a fierce protector of Caroline and his son. Caroline, while also protective of their son, is protective of her siblings since she fears what happened to her will happen to them. And family is a big part of bringing Damon and Caroline back together again. Damon realizes his family (the New York McNeill’s) is there to help him if he asks, but for Caroline it’s the opposite. She doesn’t want to believe the worst about hers.
While Damon and Caroline’s chemistry sparks and flares as if they’ve never been apart, trust in each other is keeping their hearts from allowing them to be reunited completely. Watching these two want to believe in each other, to have the marriage they hoped to have before Caroline’s disappearance, had this reader pulling for them too.
“Claiming His Secret Heir” is about learning to trust after feeling betrayed by someone you love. It’s also about believing in that love.
Ms. Rock writes another wonderful installment to her McNeill Magnates series. She even gives us a hint for another branch of the McNeill’s that this reader is excited to know more about.
A bittersweet reunion leads to the uncovering of secrets and lies as Joanne Rock brings the next of the McNeill Magnates to life! The plot is exciting as we wait to see who is behind the dastardly deeds and if their love can survive the deception. We didn't see as much of the family in this book as we have been in previous ones in the series, but the legwork was there with occasional mentions of the back story. Quite an enjoyable read!
Unsure who to trust after she suffered an abduction, Caroline Degraff McNeill makes her way home to her husband Damon. She decides to play a ruse and pretend to still be suffering a deeper amnesia than she actually is to see if she can decipher whether he was in on her kidnapping or not. She has to know whether she can trust him with the news she has to share with him ... that she delivered him a son a few weeks ago!
Damon McNeill has been living a nightmare since his wife disappeared just after their honeymoon. He's finally come home to the family after searching the world over, and suddenly there she is ... on the sidewalk in front of their house! Where has she been? Was this all some type of game to her or was she truly taken against her will? He'll stop at nothing to get to the bottom of what happened to his wife!
**3.5 stars** Caroline shows up at her husband’s house after being missing for almost a year with the claim of amnesia. She was kidnapped a month after their honeymoon. Caroline was drugged so much that she has spotty memories of the time of her kidnapping. When she eventually escapes her captors, she and finds refuge with her father. However, Caroline’s memories are slowly returning and her father’s version of events now don’t seem to ring true. It’s up to Caroline tries to discover if Damon really did marry her for mercenary reasons or if their marriage was a love match, but she is keeping a big secret from Damon.
Damon tried to use all the resources available to him to find his wife but her father claims that Caroline wanted out of the marriage, hence the reason she left her wedding rings behind and wants Damon to leave her alone. All of her bills are paid monthly and her credit card is used in a few European countries so the police seem to believe the father.
It was really easy to guess who masterminded the kidnapping. Even though the timeline was fast the story was pretty slow.
I actually think that this is the first book I have read in this series. And even though this is book number five, I didn't feel confused or lost in this book. So I would assume that these books can be read as stand alones. I will say that this is not the first Joanne Rock book that I've read. Though it has been a while since I've read one of her books.
I thought that Caroline and Damon were the perfect characters for this book. Though I will admit that Caroline drove me crazy at times. Though I understood her reasoning for faking her condition.
I honestly found Damon to be all around perfect and swoon worthy in this book.
This was a sweet light hearted second chance story for Caroline and Damon. I thought it was a very sweet and enjoyable read. I found myself wishing that it was longer.
I'm giving this book 4 Stars out of 5 and can't wait for the next book!!!!
***I received an ARC of this book for my honest opinion***
Damon has looked and searched for his wife for several months. Than she just shows up at his gate at their home in Cali..She is faking her amnesia.yes she still has it but she makes it seem worse to see if Damon still loves her..Damon is thrilled but unsure when he sees Caroline..But he takes her in and they talk some..She is asking him things that her father poisoned her with..Her dad wants Damon's company..he hates Damon even more that she married him...Damon is further more shocked to find he has a son that she is hiding from him..can he trust her? Can they build on their love and learn to trust and believe in each other? When the big showdown happens between Damon and Caroline's dad she puts everything on the line to help Damon...When they go to Caroline's office to talk afterwards while looking at a pic things become clear on who kidnapped her...A very wonderfully written story.
This story is part of a series, but if like me , you haven’t read the other books in the series, rest assure you will be fine. The story centers around Caroline and Damon McNeill. She disappeared months ago and when she shows up at his doorstep, he doesn’t know what to believe. Caroline was taken from her home, held in captivity, drugged and made to believe , Damon didn’t love her . She was pregnant and has had a child. A boy she has kept from Damon. But her father told Damon and the police she left on her on volition. What is the truth? Will these two be able to rebuild their lives and their trust? Was the father lying and if so , why? An entertaining fast paced story. I was gifted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
Claiming His Secret Heir is the 5th book in the McNeil family series by Joanne Rock. This series has held my attention from book one. I can not ever wait to get my hands on the next one.
Damon's story is no different. Finding his missing wife at his gate when she mysteriously vanished months before, who can blame him of being weary when her own family says she left him on her own accord.
Caroline must find out why her husband never reported her missing. Did he love her or was it all for financial gain like her father stated.
Damon and Caroline are a formitable team. Trusting each other to help the other one so they can protect one another pushes them forward so they can get to the bottom of her fathers secrets. This book is awesome.
The woman he has been searching for a year suddenly shows up at his mansion gate with no memory, but everything isn't what it seems for Damon and his long lost wife Caroline. Caroline is hiding a huge secret and is scared to share with Damon thinking he may have been involved in her abduction a year ago. Danger and secrets surround them as they try to return to each other and be the family they should have been a year ago. The characters are so compelling that it kept me turning the pages wanting to know what happens next. It was truly a moving story about trust, love and betrayal. This is one series that was a joy to read. I truly hope this isn't the last time we see these characters.
I really enjoyed this book by Joanne Rock! It is another book in The McNeill Magnates series. I'm looking forward to reading more books in this series. When Caroline McNeill disappears the last place Damon expects to find her is at their mansions's front gate not knowing what happened or who was responsible of her disappearance. With so many conflicting stories from her father Caroline and Damon neither one know who to trust, but the one thing they aren't conflicted about is their attraction and love for each other.
I was given an ARC from the author/publisher. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.
Caroline is kidnapped from her home and discovers she is pregnant soon after-- she is held captive for almost a year and then a fisherman finds her and returns her to her wealthy (crazy) Father. Her sister helps her see that the stuff her dad has been telling her about her husband is not true and they run away from his house to find Damon and see if she can figure out the truth.
Damon is suspicious because her dad has convinced him that she left on her own but things start coming out and they discover that her dad was the one that kidnapped her and drugged her.
So glad that they put him away. hope to read Gabe's story soon.
Joanne Rock continues the “other” McNeill’s series with Claiming His Secret Heir. Even though this book is the fifth in the series, it is as fresh and interesting as the others; bonus, it is a secret baby and an amnesia book. Damon and Caroline have a hard road back to each other, but Rock makes their journey believable and heartwarming all at the same time. Rock remains one of my go-to authors and this is no exception. A combination of heart and laughter makes this a perfect winter escape.
Can he win back his wife? Does he want to? When Caroline McNeill shows up outside her husband’s mansion, she claims to have no memory of the past year…or their passion-filled honeymoon. But faking the severity of her amnesia is the only way Caroline can find out if Damon was behind her abduction. She needs to trust him—a man she craves but still barely knows—before she can tell him about their infant son Lucas. Did the Silicon Valley mogul merely marry to claim an inheritance then dispose of her? Or is what they share real and forever?
Claiming His Secret Heir is the fifth book in The McNeill Magnates series by Joanne Rock. The main characters were introduced in the fourth book, so the readers who have read the previous book will be familiar with them and will have a better understanding of their story. I, as a person who read just this book in the series, felt like I was missing something. I never understood why the person who kidnapped Caroline did all these awful things. I got that he didn't want the marriage to happen, but why act like that?
The identity of the kidnapper is pretty obvious from the beginning which was a bad thing. I wanted a little suspense! I know there was a newborn, but I wanted mommy and daddy to bond again over their quest to find out the truth. Not they didn't bond in the book's scenario. I liked Caroline and Damon. They were good as individuals and they were also good as a couple.I liked their story and how they reconnected a year later. I will recommend this book since I plan to read the next one too.
When his wife shows up at his place after disappearing almost a year ago he is leary that she is out to get him. They had met when she worked for her father in investing in new companies. But all is not as it seems. She is there to find answers to her memories that were lost. Was he the one who kidnapped her? If not who did? What about the safety of her new born? Is he in danger from his father?
Thoroughly enjoyed this story! I was in the mood for a romantic suspense and this was spot on. I empathized with the main characters and rooted for them all of the way. Many of us will be sooooooo thankful to NOT have a father like the heroine's.
The opening was attention grabbing, the characters were belivable and the story line was strong.
This story brings intrigue, romance, a secret baby, kidnapping, amnesia and then some. A little bit of everything to keep you on the edge of your seat and wanting to know more about Caroline and Damon McNeill, and their relationship!
I wasn't really feeling the romance in this one. We are told they are into each other and love and such, but I wasn't shown it. I enjoyed the plot points where our heroine was very strong and assertive. But I didn't feel the love.
I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily reviewing.
When I want to relax and read, I always go to one of Joannes' books to read. I am heads over heels over her stories and always have the kleenex box close. Joanne hit the ball to the outfield with this book.
Light reading again. I cannot imagine how cruel Caroline's the man behind that abduction was. Smooth interaction between Damon & Caroline even though some miscommunication still happened in this book.
Maybe I'll search for another book from this series. We'll see.
Interesting read since the heroine had partial amnesia that remained throughout most of the book. It was intriguing trying to guess who was behind the kidnapping as she regained bits and pieces of her memory.
