Reaper #1

The Creeper Dance

Rate this book
My name is something that people do not speak of lightly, afraid that saying it out loud would make them a target. I have seen the way people cringe into their skin in my presence, the way they recoil when I stand too close or how they instantly avert my gaze frightened to look at my eyes. The humans have likened me to something of a legend, simple minds caught up in their fables. But those who have witnessed the reaping are too afraid to speak… because they are petrified of admitting the truth. They call me the Reaper and they say that death and I are lovers – or so I’ve heard.

** This is a 3.5 star read **

I soooo enjoyed this novella, it has everything I love in an Urban Fantasy! I have found it a bit hard to categorise though as it has a little bit of everything in it.
What do you think about a perhaps YA/NA, Apocalyptic, Urban Fantasy with a touch of gruesome horror and what could possibly be a hint at a relationship of some sort? (Well, as much as a Reaper is able to!) All I know is that it has a totally kickarse, slice'n'dice, anti heroine as the main character and a plot that leaves you riveted right from the very first page and wanting to know more.
My only complaint is that it does end abruptly in a cliffhanger and I freaking hate those with a passion. If not for that I would have added another 1/2 - 1 star.
But fear not! The author has released the next two novellas in the series and I have them in my Kindle library. 🙌
Reaper, The Creeper Dance is a stunning debut work from this new author and I look forward to seeing how she develops as a writer.

I received an ebook of this novel from the author via Instafreebie/Bookfunnel. I have voluntarily chosen to review the book, and the gifting in no way determines my review/rating, which reflects my honest opinion.

The Creeper Dance (Reaper #1) - a review by Rosemary Kenny

The (Grim) Reaper is a legend among humankind. They avoid my gaze, my touch or even mentioning my name in case it makes the speaker of it a target for my unwelcome attention...there's even a rumour around town that I'm Death's lover!

As Darcie Lennox's supernatural suspense story soon reveals, Reaper's not male as tradition has it, but a kick-ass, snarky female, who's half vampire and half werewolf!, who inhabits an alternative reality world. Other characters have unpronounceable or weird names that bear no relation to their species or origins, but even so, they all live together in a land where all the houses are, (by law) uniform in size and style - again no giveaway to the residents' identities.

As this novella (only 140 pages long), has a horrendously crucial cliffhanger, it's my advice to buy the three-book box set, rather than have to buy the others separately to discover the story-line's ending. An interesting idea for a plot, though am not quite sure when/how it will end.

Darcy Lennox's Creeper Dance was definitely enjoyable. Initially I would have categorized it in the YA genre, and still might, but now I would caution against early teens reading it due to the graphic nature of some scenes. Over all it provided an interesting main character and an evolving plot with several twists. I like that the Reaper herself continues to “open up” to the reader as more and more is revealed about her. I actually found myself wishing some illustrations were added, as I think the story could easily be done in a graphic novel format.

The aspect that I found the most intriguing was the small bit of background info given about the world and how the different species came to be. I actually wish there was a bit more about this and hopefully in the next book there will be. I am also looking forward to finding out more regarding the intentions behind taking the Reaper's blood to create the hybrids. Next up, The Silent Song

First let me state, I received an Advance Reader Copy, (ARC), but this in no way influences my review. I always leave an honest review. Also, this is my first read with this author & it won't be my last.

Damn, how I hate cliffhangers. Don't get me wrong, with or without cliffhangers this story is phenomenal. I just don't have the patients to wait. I'm greedy I want the whole story now. Excellent story. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs up.

Creeper Dance is an exciting read. There’s lots of action and intrigue.
I love that the protagonist is the ‘bad guy’. It’s an interesting perspective.
Personally, I like definitive endings and this book had more of a break, a pause in the story than a true end... but I know there’s a book 2 and maybe 3. Looks like I need to read on.
3.5 stars.

Goodreads synopsis:
My name is something that people do not speak of lightly, afraid that saying it out loud would make them a target. I have seen the way people cringe into their skin in my presence, the way they recoil when I stand too close or how they instantly avert my gaze frightened to look at my eyes. The humans have likened me to something of a legend, simple minds caught up in their fables. But those who have witnessed the reaping are too afraid to speak… because they are petrified of admitting the truth. They call me the Reaper and they say that death and I are lovers – or so I’ve heard

I don't normally use the goodreads synopsis, or book blurb in my reviews, I prefer to write things in my own words, however, this time, I honestly did not know how to even begin to describe what this book was about. As you can probably see, from the synopsis, it is intriguing as all getout. What I got however, was something a bit more muddled than amazing.

The protagonist doesn't have a name (I don't think....if they do, I honestly can't remember it), this isn't a problem, I've read Jeff VanderMeer's The Southern Reach trilogy. I actually find that stories where the protagonist does not have a name to be incredibly interesting, if done right. This story was incredibly short, so I'm not so mad that I didn't enjoy it as much as I had hoped I would.

Let's start with the editing, I felt that there needed to be another round or two of it to really make this piece shine. Also, the format was a bit screwed up on my kindle which made continuing sentences hard to keep up with at times. I guess you could say, the formatting made the continuity of the piece hard to follow.

I felt that this story was a big muddle of chaos, in my mind anyway. I get the gist of it, it's a dystopian world where the supernatural creatures have stepped out of the shadows and shown themselves as existing. The humans freaked out and then there was an all out war between the two species, World War 3 as it's called in the story. Things are kind of stable, but peace can be broken at any point. Our protagonist is a reaper. She (I think it's a she) goes around killing off the bad vampires who threaten the balance of peace. So the idea is really cool, I just feel that it wasn't executed very well.

The writing is very stilted and didn't have any flow in my eyes. I'm really glad this was a short story otherwise I probably would have DNF'd it, if I'm honest. I didn't connect to the protagonist at all. Zilch, nada, a big fat nothing on the character investment side of things. So there was honestly nothing keeping me invested in the story at all.

The world building seemed to be the main point of this first instalment, which is fine, we need to understand the world that we're reading about. This part was pretty solid, I loved how fleshed out the backstory about the current state of the world was. I did find that the beginning felt like a bit of an info dump at first, it took me a bit to wrap my head around what was happening, or, in this case, had happened.

This seems to be almost a serialised format of release for this series, so the short instalments I think will work well for it. For me though, there was just nothing in this story for me, which makes me sad. I really want to love it. The cover is super interesting and eye catching, and as I said at first, that synopsis was SUPER intriguing. Unfortunately, it's just not for me, so I won't be continuing with it. I would like to thank the author for including this story in a book funnel email, and I'm just sorry that I didn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to.

This supernatural suspense story soon reveals, Reaper's not male as tradition has it, but a bad ass, smart mouthed female, who is half vampire and half werewolf! She inhabits an alternative reality world. This novella (only 140 pages long), has a shockingly crucial cliff-hanger, it's my advice to buy all 3 books to discover the story-line's ending. An interesting idea for a plot, though am not quite sure when/how it will end. If you enjoy the Anita Blake series this is akin to it.

"The Creeper Dance" is almost unreadable - the Prologue, four pages, gallops through what would normally be sufficient material for a couple of books.
It's badly edited (if it was edited at all, I suspect that Microsoft Word Auto-Correct was used). For example, there's a katana 'wealded' - 'weald' means a heavily wooded area.
It's completely over the top: "Within a second, I jumped from the seventeen-storey rooftop and landed just behind the bloodsucker with only the wind that followed me down to make him aware of my presence."
I made it to Chapter 3 before abandoning it.

People looked at him in fear as they dont want to be his next target. They wont ever say his name outline just in case it calls him to them. Who is really underneath it all? Will you find out? See if you will

A near future-alien-vampire creature adventure. Tons of fun, but way to short. Will have to get the rest.
