Not quite five stars because the plot felt a little cramped/rushed a few times. It would have been perfect as a regular length (around 300 pgs) story instead of a 244 pg one! I always enjoy Dana Mentink's writing and this is another solid winner from her own. Ella was easily my favorite character...and I loved her relationship with her sister.

Eeep!! Another Thorn brother romance!!!! Keep a hyperventilating bag handy for this one because Owen is a bit of a brooder, a whole lot of compassionate and definitely a tortured soul. Oh...and a wounded hero...literally...he has the purple heart to prove it.

I love that Ella and Owen have a lifetime of history. She was the tag along kid sister of his best friend so he considers Ella family despite the years of separation due to his deployments. Of course, Ella has been secretly crushing on Owen for years because he's that irresistible...but she's been harboring a bit of resentment at his desertion too. Not that there was anything between them back then...just her girlish heart breaking over unfulfilled dreams plus a whole lot of hurt as life dealt her some pretty heavy blows that she had to weather alone. She got off course for a time, but she's straightened up and life looks good...until someone sets her up for murder.

Owen in full protection mode (my heart palpitations had palpitations) stands by Ella as they work at clearing her name. And Mentink has created one of the truly nastiest villains in this story. And we all know up front just who he is which is an interesting twist. What we all have to figure out is the what, why and where? And that takes characters and readers on a hair-raising, action-packed adventure.

"The magnificent strength of Ella Cahill took his breath away."

Ella Cahill gave up a huge dream to care for her disabled sister. Now someone is framing her for murdering a friend who had send her a warning. She is drugged and arrested. Her brother's best friend and her friend since childhood, Owen Thorn, former Marine, wants to clear her name. But Owen has promised her brother he would stay away from Ella. Owen has problems of his own, too. Can Ella and he work together and stop this killer before she is the next victim?

Dana Mentink is a favorite and this book just proves why. Action from the very first few paragraphs that does not let up throughout the book. Reading is was like running for your very own life, in a way. Writing with super suspense throughout, Mentink once again proves she is a go-to author for a grand, gasp worthy read! Don't miss this one, folks! I can't wait for the rest of the series to unfold. Her spiritual themes are wonderful as well.

Ella Cahill, a childhood friend of the Thorn family is mistakenly suspected of murder. Signs that point to her continue while Owen Thorn does his best to help discover the answers to numerous questions. The entire Thorn family stands behind Ella and her disabled sister, as she follows every clue that may help to clear her name.

Characters are strong and relatable, while a fast paced plot keeps the reader steeped in suspense. This is not a book to slowly absorb! The action continues to the very end of the story, and there are no clues as to which way the plot will lead. Numerous signs lead to dead ends, while the real killer is still at large and posing new threats to Ella and her family.

I was propelled through this book! This author has a habit of building a suspense filled plot, and leading the reader around corners that are not what one would expect. I read this book so fast that I may have to read it again just to enjoy the story at a slower pace! I highly recommend Treacherous Trails, the second in the Gold Country Cowboys series.

Mentink is stellar at grabbing your attention right from the start and keeping the tension high throughout the story. The action doesn’t ebb much once it begins – which in this case is pretty much right away – and one thing I always love about this author’s suspense books is that several of her scenes are truly action-movie-worthy. In Treacherous Trails, it’s not so much about figuring out the culprit but instead staying on the edge of your seat, wondering a) how Ella and Owen will survive this and b) how the bad guy will get a satisfying comeuppance. Mentink’s suspense-timing is fast-paced, spot-on and smartly written.

Also woven throughout the novel are moments of humor (the unicorn shirt!) and romance. Ella has loved Owen since they were kids, and Owen has to hide his own feelings because his best friend is Ella’s brother who has made it clear that Ella is off limits to Owen. This gives Ella and Owen an easy, tender, comfortable camaraderie that is also simmering with both sets of suppressed feelings. Swooniliciousness ahead! (I still have not recovered from the purple heart moment. Ah! The romantical feels!!)

Bottom Line: If you’re looking for a protective former-Marine cowboy hero, a brave strong heroine, and buckle-up-for-a-bumpy-ride suspense novel, look no further. All of Mentink’s suspense stories are top-notch, but I especially love the Thorn family characters in this series! A quick read, packed with action and a tender message of dying to self, this is a great pick for your weekend!

Treacherous Trails is an action packed addition to the Gold Country Cowboys series. This novel stands alone, even though it is the second book in the series, so no worries if you haven’t read the first one.

I really liked the history between these two main characters. Owen was best friends with Ella’s older brother growing up, and all three of them spent plenty of time running around being kids together in the past. However, in this novel, the friendship of old between Ella and Owen began to morph into something decidedly more than simple comraderie!

The danger level was very high in this story and I enjoyed the many twists and turns in the plot. While it was hard to watch as Ella was framed and treated unfairly by law enforcement, the support and connection that Ella had with Owen made it all worth it. I look forward to reading more in this series.

Clear your schedule, take a deep breath, and hold onto your saddles before you return to Dana Mentink’s Gold Country. Just like a wild mustang, Treacherous Trails is one wild ride.
From the first page Mentink yanks readers into Ella and Owen’s story and doesn’t let go. With plenty of close calls and questions to be answered, this story goes by faster than a thoroughbred racehorse.

Oh, and let’s not forget about the unicorn shirt. This little reprieve had me laughing out loud.

With lots of combined memories, the history between Owen and Ella give this story depth and substance. Ella’s been hurt by Owen before (even though it takes him a while to catch on). As both of these characters fight to uncover the truth and save Ella from a murder conviction, they grow close once again.

But Owen knows what he wants, what he is made for, and Ella is not in that picture. Can he give up one dream to discover an even better one?

Don’t miss this action-packed, family-centric, twisty, blood pressure-increasing suspense.

I enjoyed this second book that I've read by Dana.
I just enjoy her writing!!! Such exciting stories and I love how there are so many twists and turns throughout the story.
I also love how God had a plan for each of the characters in Gold Bar just as he does for each of us in real life.
I very strongly admired Ella. She's brave, courageous and the ability to look out for others.
I had a dream myself but it never came to pass bc I believed that God had a different plan for me.
Yes, it hurt very much but now that I'm older I understand.
Ella is a hardheaded just like Owen. Each is out for their own selves and not looking toward the Lord for help
We are all just like Owen and Ella at times!! Too hardheaded for our own good!!
I received this book for free. This is my honest opinion and no compensations were not received

"Someone told me taking up your cross and following Jesus means you sometimes say no to what your heart wants."

Ella Cahill passed up the chance to follow her dreams when she turned down a career opportunity that would have left her disabled sister without a family caregiver. It was the right thing to do. Now, she is facing murder charges and is desperate to find the evidence necessary to clear her name. Appearing by her side is her brother's best friend, Owen Thorn, home from active duty while recovering from a serious leg injury. It seems right having him by her side, but how long will he stay?

Owen Thorn promised his best friend, Ray Cahill, to look after his sisters, but he couldn't prevent Ella from discovering a dead body in the trunk of her van. She insists on her innocence and he believes her, but someone wants her to take the responsibility for a senseless murder. They think they have figured out who, it's just a matter of finding out why. In the mean time, why is Owen finding Ella's gorgeous red hair and sparkling green eyes so attractive, all of a sudden?

This little story has enough high speed chases to fill several books, so be prepared to ride down some "treacherous trails"as Ella and Owen race towards justice!

Action-packed and adrenaline-laced, this starts out with a bang and the pace steadily increases as the story progresses! Having grown up together, there is no way Owen believes Ella capable of murder and he sets out to prove her innocence. Honor bound by Ray—Ella's brother—he will do whatever it takes to keep her out of danger, along with her disabled sister. He's a tough Marine who puts his all in whatever “mission” he's assigned to! However Ella begins to resent being just a “job” to do, especially when her heart becomes tangled with his. Can these two life-long friends survive long enough to become something more?

Then you're surrounded by the Thorn family, big but lovable, and Mama Thorn is the glue that has kept them together. I can't wait to meet the rest of the Thorn brothers, you get a inkling of what they are like in this one & I'm looking forward to their own hard-won happily-ever-afters! Sprinkled in between the tension is the authors own sense of humor. I have to think it's her way of diffusing a ticking bomb if you will! Over all, faith plays a natural role in each of their lives, especially when Owen learns there's more to life & God's plans are always best!

Enjoyed this as much as the first one--maybe slightly more, especially with the history between Owen and Ella that made the romance not seem quite as fast. I really adored Owen--protective, full of grit, and just plain stubborn, the combination of cowboy and Marine was like a double helping of heart-meltingness. And Ella was an unusual combination of softness and independence, largely thanks to her background, who I loved to see working with her sister but especially adored every time she subtly proved to Owen that his injuries didn't make him less of a man in her eyes. <3

As in the last one, the Thorn family was my absolute favorite, and after this, I definitely NEED Jack's story! Having this personal/family history with the officer who seems to be put in charge of all their cases also makes for some interesting tension/additions to the suspense, and I'm definitely eager to see how that will play out in Keegan's story especially... (Although I do admit to being hopelessly lost as far as the timeline of what exactly happened when to the different characters in the backstory.)

Also, does it ratchet the tension up more when you don't know who's behind the crime, or when you know from the beginning? Because both ways have been plenty intense so far! The bad guy in this one sent shivers up my spine--so terrible! And the fact that he always seemed to be one step ahead of them made me wonder how on earth they were ever going to foil his plans. Seriously chilling, and the nonstop action kept me racing along to find out how it was all going to end. But eventually, it ended just like the last one--with me ready to dive into the next installment! :D

And apparently I forgot to mention one of the best parts of the story, the lesson about how it can be incredibly painful and difficult to let go of your own plans for your life, but when you embrace what God is calling you to instead, you end up finding something more beautiful than you ever dreamed. Not that it negates the pain of the loss, but that surrender to God's plan doesn't mean drudgery and dullness but joy and fulfillment. Such a beautiful, beautiful message! <3

Content--murder and attempted murder; mentions of blood, wounds, and dead bodies ; mentions of divorce, unhappy marriages, and a man flirting with a married woman; mentions of drinking and addiction to painkillers; mentions of gambling; violence, including gunplay; some kissing (not descriptive)

Treacherous Trails takes us back to the Thorn family and this time the story focus is on Owen Thorn who is recovering from an injury he received in an attack in the military. At the request of his best friend, Ray, Owen is keeping eyes on Ray’s sisters Ella and Betsy. However, Ella has crossed a really bad man and is now framed for murder. Things are not looking good for her and she really sees no way out as she tries to prove her innocence and protect her disabled sister. Owen is a take charge kind of guy and he is really protective of Ella since their childhood. Both are battling pasts that are less than stellar and both are fighting the love between each other. One because of fear of abandonment, the other because they don’t think they are good enough.

The overall message in this fast-paced novel I found very soul-satisfying. Sometimes we have to let go of the dreams that we thought best for our lives, and embrace the better ones that God has provided. I will say the villain in this novel was quite tenacious and really got under my skin in the way they just assumed they could get away with everything, very easy to dislike and the cold-blooded grip on other lives made me quite angry. Looking forward to the other brothers’ stories and hopefully to Ray’s as well.

I really wanted to read this book in one sitting because I didn't want to put it down, but instead I had to settle for reading it in two days! This book is unique in that you know who the bad guy is pretty much from the beginning but you don't know the "why" until the main characters discover the clues throughout their investigation AND their running for their lives! What struck me the most in the book is how many times bad guys/people with evil intent can get away with things and there's nothing you can do about it! Over and over the villain got away with something and it wasn't fair but Ella and Owen just had to stand there and let him get away with it because of the situation. That happens in real life too! They couldn't prove this person had done anything, even though he did! Ella is framed for murder and Owen is trying to help her clear her name. He's a marine who is home from Afghanistan healing from an injury with issues of his own. Ella's brother is Owen's best friend so he feels it's his duty to help her. Owen is one of the Thorn brothers and I love their family! Ella has a disabled sister, Betsy, and I loved seeing how the Thorns rallied around her and helped out as Owen and Ella were off trying to solve the murder. I would definitely recommend this book. You don't have to read the first book to read this one! It's very fast-paced and the characters are awesome!

Another fantastic, captivating, cowboy novella from the talented hands of the wonderful Dana Mentink. She takes suspense and swoon worthy cowboys, a touch of romance and lots of inspiring messages and wraps them up in an unforgettable plot line.

Ms. Mentink’s Ella and Owen are beautifully chiseled into characters that will steal your heart instantly. I loved their story. Watching Owen and Ella come to terms with not only their feelings for each other, but also with who’s behind framing Ella, was an intense ride! I love when a book will do that to you!

This second installment in the Gold Country Cowboys series is definitely one that I recommend with a high flying 4 star praise. This book will keep you up late, turning page after page, biting nail after nail, as you fly through the book to get to the last page and see how the story ends. You’ll be dying for more from this talented author! I can’t wait for the next one. Well done, Ms. Mentink!

I haven't read a cowboy book in a long time and Mentink is clever in the way she grabs your attention from the first page. Ella is drugged, nearly kidnapped, and barely escapes when Owen finds her. Then she is framed for murder and must do everything possible to prove her innocence as her sister depends on her.

I get that it's nice having an over-protective military brother, but Ray to me was a nuisance in this story and way too demanding when he himself couldn't be there to protect his sisters. He comes through in the end, but didn't care for his arrogance towards Owen even if he meant well.

LOVED the Thorn family and every scene they're in!!

Reed is a worthy villain in this book and even though he's only in a few scenes, he constantly makes himself known through texts and threatening phone calls. Wishing he had been killed due to all the crimes and destruction he brought on, but at least he receives justice.

I was slightly disappointed that the case doesn't get closure at the end. It's implied that Ella is freed at the end because Reed is exposed but I would've liked to have seen her experience the process that there was nothing to worry about and her reaction to that. It was great that Owen changed his decision at the end, but would've liked to have that drawn out a little more also.

I won this book and really enjoyed it, eager to read Book 3!

I planned on reading a few chapters, and soon I was finishing the book, with non-stop action and your heart in your throat constantly, this is one compelling read.
You feel the injustice going on here, and some do no survive, and all the while you want for Good to overcome Evil, and the costs of what happens here, and you ask why? Well greed, of course, the almighty lure into crime, and the casualties that it leaves in its wake.
There is a slight romance story here, and I found myself wishing for it, but is not the main focus of this story, or is it? We do have “love” here, in several different forms, for mankind, animals, family, friends, but will these be enough?
Once you pick this one up you will be page turning right to the end!

Wow. That was my first reaction after finishing this book.I tend to do my reading on my hour lunch and I did not want to go back to work... I wanted to keep reading.I finished this book in about 3 hours total.
This book starts out with a bang - and it DOES NOT STOP. There were NO pauses in the action. It just keeps on rolling.
Ella. The central character - such a lovely woman. Accused of murder she is determined to clear her name. Owen. Ella's brothers best friend. Former Marine. Hardened from war. Determined to protect and clear Ella's name at all costs.
My favorite line of the book: "It's like trying to stop a tank with a squirt gun."

This is book two of the Gold Country Cowboys series. It can be read as a stand alone.
If you like action and adventure with romance and violence downplayed with a Christian theme - this is the book for you

This is the 2nd book of the series and I loved the book. In this book we meet the next brother Owen Thorn who is a twin. We also get to meet Ella and Betty Cahill. Ella is a farrier which starts the story for she is accused of a crime that seems so impossible that Owen and his family sets out to prove it. The first clues begin at beginning but you find yourself turning the pages just to find out what is happening next. Betty is Ella's disabled sister and you can't help but fall in love with her. But its Ella's love for her sister that really shows in this story as well as the love that kinda slips up on Owen and Ella. You will find yourself cheering for these 2 to solve the mystery of who done it. Just like when we played a game of Clue. Its a definite page turner and a awesome read.

The waiting is over! Treacherous Trails, book number two in Dana Mentink’s Gold Country Cowboys series, is ready to hit the bookstores. Ella Cahill, a farrier, and Owen Thorn have known one another forever. When Ella is accused of murder, Owen feels duty bound to help her out of her predicament.

Make sure you start reading Treacherous Trails early in the day or you’ll be awake all night turning pages to find out if Ella and Owen can get themselves out of the mess in which they have become embroiled.

Now to tick off the minutes until book three comes off the press. Which Thorn brother will see action next?

My Perspective

This story was so fun to read. First of all, it had horses, which I love. And while they aren't "characters" in the book, it still made my heart smile when I saw the cover and read about them here and there. Second, there are some great characters. Everyone goes for the main characters, but sometimes it's those bad characters that I like. Don't get me wrong, I love Ella and Owen. Their chemistry is wonderful, Owen is someone I want to be my brother's best friend that I can swoon over, and Ella's compassionate and caring personality is heartwarming. The way Ella looks over her sister is inspiring to me, and I hope to see more of them in the future.

But let's talk about the bad guys. Bruce Reed, Tony, and an unexpected helper. I can get really caught up in what the bad guys are thinking and doing if they are written right. I try to understand where they are coming from, what their next move will be, and how it all works out with the storyline. Dana Mentink has done a fabulous job with these villians. Let's face it - we all love to hate the villain (thank you Disney), and these villians are fun to hate. Bruce Reed is methodical, patient, devious, and full of himself. He struggles with the greenest envy of all and this book shows how that can really harm a person. Then at the end there is a surprise twist and you find out about another individual who is helping him. I can usually see these things coming, but this time I just couldn't, and that was great! I love surprise twists - they add to the story, to the suspense, and sometimes leave your jaw dropping a little bit.

Overall I thought this was a great read. Romance readers and suspense readers alike will enjoy following Ella and Owen on their quest for justice. With tons of action, some swoon worthy moments and surprises, there is a little something for everyone. I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Wow! Have you read any books by Dana Mentink yet? Treacherous Trails was my first and I am hooked. With just the right blend of suspense, action, and romance this story was hard to put down from the start.

Ella was a fantastic, well-developed character. After a period of rebellion and stupidity, she repented and turned her life around, being willing to take up her cross to follow the path the Lord had for her. Her tender heart for her sister who was brain-damaged was admirable and sweet, and yet she had such determination to stand up for herself and not get trampled on.

Owen couldn’t stop himself from acting the hero, despite Ella’s claims to not need his help. I loved his obsession with the weather and the way it kept coming into the story.

I loved Owen’s family as well. The way they stepped in to help Ella with her troubles was heart-warming. Each of the brothers was so protective. But the best one was Owen’s mom. She was so full of love. She also knew how to let her sons do what they felt they needed to without trying to interfere.

Though the story is mostly serious and intense, I laughed out loud at the scene after they got out of the hospital smelling like smoke. The clothes Ella picked out for Owen at the thrift store and the ensuing conversation was great!

I’ve now signed up for this author’s newsletter so I can know when her new books are coming out. You may want to do this as well.

One of the best things about this story is the connection between Owen and Ella. They have known each other since they were kids and their bond has grown over the years. I loved Owen and his strong sense of protection. As a marine he has seen a lot but I'm sure he never expected to have to fight to keep Ella safe once he returned home. I loved how the author goes into detail about the injuries he sustained as a marine and how much he honors his country. I would definitely want him as my bodyguard.

Ella is in a lot of trouble when she is accused of murder. Owen is right there to help her collect evidence to clear her name. There is one small problem though. A certain man wants Ella dead and will stop at nothing to accomplish it. I loved how the author described the different types of horses and what type of job Ella does. Working around horses is hard work but Ella loves it and is quite good at her job. I liked seeing the vulnerable side of Ella. It is hard for her to accept help and her pride gets in the way a bit. I bet we can all relate to that in a way. It's not easy to admit you need help, but the good news is God is always there to lend a hand. The author does an amazing job of keeping the story intense with unsavory characters and close calls that continue to put Ella and Owen in danger. Why does this man want Ella dead? Can Owen keep his promise to keep Ella safe?

The ending is one non stop action packed experience that will have your heart racing. The author delivers a first class story that keeps readers involved with great descriptions of scenes that make you feel like you are right there watching from the sidelines. I am very impressed with how the author delivers a story that reminds us to never give up hope.

Wow! What an incredible and heart racing story from start to finish. The protagonist, Ella Cahill is young farrier caring for her disabled sister, Betsy when she becomes a murder suspect. The hero is none other than one of my favorite cowboys, Owen Thorn.
I fell in love with the Thorn family in the first book in the series and had been eagerly anticipating catching up with them on their ranch. I was so glad to find the matriarch, Evie Thorn is still up to any challenge that comes her way. I'm convinced that every member of the Thorn family have hearts as big as their ranch.

I loved the loyalty and friendship Owen extended to Ella and I've noticed that theme so far in this series with the Thorn family. They are kind, loving and ready to lend a hand to those in need of help. They are a close knit family which reminds me of my own family.

This is one of those books that had me guessing what would happen next and exactly what kind of nefarious scheme was going on ,or if there even was a nefarious scheme. I'll give you fair warning, you won't want to put this book down until you find out!

Overall, this is a fast paced, thrilling story with characters that I loved with one or two that I strongly disliked. Kudos to Ms. Mentink on a wonderful storyline and realistic characters. I'm looking forward to seeing which Thorn brother we'll get to know better in the next book in the series.

Review of
Treacherous Trails
By Dana Mentink

This the 2nd of the cowboy series featuring the Thorn family. The Thorn family is a strong, tightknit family, but some members have battles they are fighting and sometimes loosing at.
As Treacherous Trails begins we meet Ella Cahill, moments later Bruce Reed and then we are given a warning, “He’s dangerous”.
Owen Thorn is Ella’s brother Ray best friend, 3 years older than Ella and a Marine.
With each page we get to know a little more about the dynamics of all the characters. We learn their fears, flaws, dreams or lost dreams and feel the strength within them that the character didn’t know they had.
In Dana’s last book “Cowboy Christmas Guardian”, Dana had several characters to be suspicious of. In Treacherous Trails I feel that the “villain” was introduce to strongly and that I missed the opportunity of trying to figure out who the culprit was.
I feel the number of attempts on Ella’s life and those close to her were excessive. In a small town like Gold Bar, everyone knows everyone’s business. Police officer Larraby has animosity toward the Thorn family which may affect his judgement at first, but with all the attempts I feel officer Larraby would be hard pressed by the town people to do his job.
I loved how Betsy Ella’s sister with severe medical problems was included throughout the story.
Thank you, Dana, for another book where faith, commitment and love work together to show that we all have inner strengths and the ability to overcome roadblocks.

Ms Mentick covered all the bases in this romantic suspense. Cowboys and military wrapped up in the same wounded hero. This romantic suspense is different than most in that we know who the bad guy is, we know why, and we even know there will be a happy ever after since it is of course, romance. What we don't know is how the bad guy will be caught when he has the whole community of small town America wrapped around his little finger. Reed, doing something wrong, nah, you're wrong, you're lying, you did it and are trying to frame him... Even the entire police force are in on the we love Reed song and dance.

Ella and Owen are kind of in-your-face hero and heroine. There was nothing soft about them. I didn't like them and I didn't relate to them. I did like secondary character Betsy, and I hope Owen's brother has his own story coming, but as for Ella and Owen, no. Despite their strong characteristics they were still very easy for Reed to manipulate.

I liked the ending, and I don't want to give away a spoiler, but with everything the way it was I am not convinced it was really a HEA in the truest sense of the word. That's all I'll say about that. It left my mind whirling with what-ifs and that's not a good way for me to close a book.

There is little to no faith message. I didn't notice one at all, but it might've been weak and I missed it.

I was given a copy free. All opinions are my own.

"Treacherous Trails" by Dana Mentink is the second novel in the "Gold Country Cowboys" series and is filled with lots of twists and danger. It could be enjoyed as a stand alone because it is Owen and Ella's story.

I liked this story better than the first one, but they are both wonderful books.

This story really had me surprised at the ending, well both books in the series did but this really did have me surprised and shocked at who the guilty person was.

This is a story of danger and violence but is more a story of loyalty and love between family members and childhood friends. It is also a story of how some vices such as love of money and gambling and fear of others can make you do evil things.

Ok, this part is a little personal to me and my family and might be a little bit of a spoiler alert but there was one scene that really made me want to stop reading this book because of the fire and talk of the characters maybe dying of smoke inhalation. I won't say anymore on this except to say I can't say if these characters died or not and that I'm glad I finished the book.

In this story both Ella and Owen learn that God's plans for their lives were better than their own hopes and plans.

If you like real danger in a clean love story then I recommend "Treacherous Trails" by Dana Mentink.

I was given a complimentary copy by the author and Celebrate Lit. These opinions are my own.

My review today is on the Love Inspired Suspense, Treacherous Trails. This is the second book in the Gold Coast Cowboys Series. I really enjoy Dana's books and this is an excellent example of her work. This book is well written, action packed, and fast paced. Dana has interwoven her faith throughout the story like a tapestry. I always love that.

Farrier Ella Cahill is driving home when she is drugged from her own thermos. She gets out of her van and collapses, someone puts a bag over her head, shoves her back in the van, and pours alcohol all over her. She escapes and hides in the woods. When she awakes she returns home to find a dead body in the back of her van. Ella is accused of killing the man. She must find a way to clear her name. She turns to her brother's best friend, a former Marine.

Former Marine Owen Thorn promised Ella's brother that he would protect Ella and their sister. Now she is accused of murder and someone is out to kill her. Someone kidnaps Ella's sister to stop Ella. Can he find her sister, protect Ella and clear her name? Her brother told him to not get involved with her, how does he keep from loving her?

A great journey with twists and turns. They must learn to trust each other and trust God. God has a plan for these two, a plan for good and not for evil. God has a plan for you too, Make Him your Lord and watch Him turn your life around.

This was a good solid Christian suspense book. Ella is the local farrier and has gotten on someone's bad side in a big way. Owen is Ella's deployed brother's best friend. They have been friends since childhood but he hasn't always been there when she needed him. Accused of murder, Ella is determined to prove her innocence. Owen is determined to protect her.

I was really thrilled to realize I had read the first book about this family and truly hope there is more about these brothers. I do so adore the family here. The mama is the kind of country mama everyone wanted. She loves everyone and her home/kitchen table are always open! Knowing the bad guy throughout the book didn't make it less intense. I had an inkling about other characters and unfortunately was right. There was love in this book and some romance but it wasn't front and center so I would say more suspense than romance. I still have a couple lingering questions, mainly regarding the police but I'm betting those will be answered in future books.

It was a 4/5 for me. I do so enjoy these stories about this family!

Thank you to the author for the review copy of this book (via Celebrate Lit). I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.

Heart- stopping action and suspense. A totally evil villain. Two very broken and real characters trying their best to survive. Heartaches and raw emotions that are sometimes spoken but more often hidden. Dana Mentink sure knows how to produce a page-turner. The plot is fast-paced and gripping, the circumstances Ella and Owen find themselves in almost hopeless. Ella and Owen are such engaging characters - Ella emotionally hurt and struggling to make ends meet while taking care of her handicapped sister, Owen physically hurt and struggling to make sense of his world now turned upside down.
Ella and Owen both learn about sacrificial love - the kind of love that God showed us - and how God can take our sacrifices and turn them into something greater.

Now I need to read the first book in the series and meet Owen’s older brother. Next book in the series is about Jack, Owen’s twin. That should be another great read!

I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher via Celebrate Lit Tours. I was not required to write a favorable review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.
