When I was a kid, I collected and read all twenty-four Tarzan novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950). Since that time, I've enjoyed reading books by other authors writing stories that have expanded on Tarzan and other characters and worlds created by Burroughs. This one is part of a series of books published by ERB, Inc. called "The Wild Adventures of Edgar Rice Burroughs," which are not only about Tarzan.
This story takes us to the 1980s and introduces us to Tarzan's grandson, Jackie, and great-grandson, Jonathan. Tarzan and Jane have been living on their estate in Central Africa and so have their son, Korak, and his wife, Meriem. Jackie has been living in London, where he's running the Greystoke Trust. As the title tells us, Tarzan's family, the Greystokes, come under siege. Tarzan's estate is attacked by marauders while Jackie is accused of crimes against the Crown and jailed. Jonathan's plane is shot down and crashes into the African jungle and the young man has to call upon all his instincts and skills to survive...
I enjoyed the story and liked how the story of Tarzan and his family was continued beyond where ERB left off ( the last of ERB's Tarzan's stories were set in the WWII period).
I give this one 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

A Tarzan novel without Tarzan (or more accurately, appearing in just a handful of chapters) is a complete and utter waste of time as exhibited by this book here.

The Tarzan legacy continues!

First of all, this isn’t your father’s Tarzan. Although based on characters created by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the family continues past the characters in the Tarzan series. Once you understand that, you can fully enjoy this book.

In this book, the fourth generation of the Greystoke family faces the perils of the vast jungle. Tarzan’s great-grandson, Jon Greystoke, is following a different path from that of his forebears.

As a child of seven he had a terrifying experience with a lion. I not for his father, Jackie and his grandfather, Korak, he would have died. And indeed if not for Tarzan himself, they might have all died or at least suffered serious injury.

This prompts Jon’s mother to state that Jon would never come to Africa again. After her death in a car crash, Jon did return a few times, but he never wanted any part of the jungle. He preferred to work with the family business, The Greystoke Trust, with holding worldwide. Jackie had been running the show with frequent trips home to Africa, until the car wreck put him in a wheelchair.

Then everything goes to hell in a hand basket. Jon is returning to Africa on family business, when his plane is shot down. The Greystoke compound is overran and nigh destroyed by mercenaries. Back in England, Jackie Greystoke is drawn into court with alleged business practices that are tantamount to treason against the Crown!

Now, Jon is lost in the Jungle along with his grandmother, Merriam, Tarzan and Jane are missing, and Jackie is in prison. An old enemy has reared his ugly head after all these years, and it will take all of the Greystoke family to put their enemy down for good.

It’s different from most Tarzan stories, but it does grow on you. I give the book four stars…

Tarzan in a modern setting

I’ve been waiting nearly a year (approximately 11 months) to read this book. First heard about it at the Edgar Rice Burroughs panel at Stan Lee’s LA Comic-Con last year. I problem I run into most often when reading new tales of the classic pulp characters is that modern day authors try to emulate the writing style and pattern of the original, this is a mistake. Thankfully that did NOT happen with this story.

Spanning four generations of the Clayton clan, this book is really about the great-grandson of Tarzan & Jane, Jon Clayton, and his efforts to overcome his own fears, step out of the shadows of his forefathers, and find his rightful place in the world. Don’t worry, Tarzan, his son Korak, and Korak’s son Jackie all have plenty to do in the story. The books description doesn’t do it justice as it truly is a grand, sweeping, epic tale that goes from Africa, London, the Himalayas, Paris, Moscow, and Washington DC.

If you’re a fan of good, fast paced adventure stories then you’re in for a thrilling ride. If you’re a fan of the classic tales of the Lord of the Apes, then you’re about to find out what ever became of Tarzan, Jane, as well as the three generations of their progeny. And for people who have a little bit of the “Nitpicker” in them I had one problem with the story which the author cleared up for me in the small appendix at the end of the book. The Legend of Tarzan continues!

Not a reboot, rather a story about the inheritors of the Greystoke legacy set in the 1980s. I enjoyed it, but the storylines incorporating international finance and power politics overwhelm the primal aspects of your traditional Tarzan novel.

Just like a typical ERB novel 95% action and wraps up in the last 5% - good read would like another from this author.

I really enjoyed this book even though Tarzan's role in this one is more of a supporting role as the focus is more on Tarzan's great-grandson Jon. The pacing is perfect and kept me reading until it was done. I loved the fact that the author incorporated the murder of Dian Fossey in the storyline adding some "authenticity" to the story. Highly recommend!
