From the First
Paco Ardit is the author of the Spanish Novels Series. He was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1976. Since the early 1980’s he lives in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Combining his experience in learning, languages and fiction writing he comes up with fun and engaging graded readers in multiple genres: Mystery, Detective Stories, Romance, Comedy, Drama, and more.
This is another great novella from Paco Ardit. It’s at B2 upper-intermediate level so unless you want to be dipping into a dictionary or grammar every two minutes, you will need to have a pretty good understanding of conditionals, gerunds and the various past tenses. Also, be aware that the novel is set in Venezuela and uses Latin American forms. If you’re a bit shaky with the pluperfect or conditional forms, you might be better off reading some of Paco Ardit’s books at A1, A2 or B1 before you tackle this one. I won’t give away the plot of Llamada Perdida, Suffice to say that it is creepy (in a good way) and for your money you not only get a thorough lesson in Spanish, you get an imaginative and entertaining story that reflects a slide of Spanish/Latino life. This is the third B2 book of Paco Ardit’s that I have read in the last few months. I’m going to read the remaining two at this level before going on to read his C1 and C2 books (there are three of each at the moment). By then I think I might be ready to read some “real” (and that’s not casting any aspersions on Paco Ardit) Spanish and Latin American literature.
Llamada perdida is a mysterious story of a girl who is experiencing some serious boyfriend relationship problems. One of them may even be a handsome stalker with some hideous plans for her. The story is slow in the first part of the book but does become more interesting later on. The book is intended for intermediate learners of the Spanish language which seems a very appropriate rating.
Easy read...great for practice. The story line was a bit borring, but got more interesting as the story unfolded. It's a great book for intermediate level.
