With a cast of characters including a zebra, toucan, and a hippo, everyday concepts such as up/down and in/out are hilariously demonstrated by animal friends on a playground. A new board book series by artist Jennifer Sattler.
Jennifer Sattler is the author and illustrator of several picture books including Sylvie, Chick 'n' Pug, Pig Kahuna, Chick 'n' Pug Meet the Dude, Uh-oh, Dodo!, and her latest, Pig Kahuna Pirates. After several years of teaching college students, she realized that her "inner goofball" needed to come out. Once she started making books for children, she was hooked. "I really am a 5-year old at heart," she says. "These are my people!"
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5) Similar to Sandra Boynton's Opposites, Jungle Gym helps teach some opposing adjectives and prepositions using cute animals.
Highlights: Animals are all playing on a jungle gym which kids are familiar with and can correlate the words with activities they do on the playground. I LOVED that the last two pages include a counting activity; it asks the reader to count how many times a certain animal appeared throughout the book.
Lowlights: The story ends with a hippo getting stuck but there's no resolution.
An amusing way to look at concepts, like above and below, or right side up and upside down. Animals on a playground demonstrate each concept. On the last page, young readers are prompted to count how many times they saw each animal in the pages of the book. Learning concepts disguised by fun! For ages 2 – 4.
Using playground equipment, like swings and slides, safari animals demonstrate directional words like above and below. The illustrations and expressions on the faces of the animals are very cute. :)
I really enjoy Jennifer Sattler's illustration style--very whimsical and playful. While my 18-month-old son enjoys the book now, the activities at the end of the book make it so that you could translate this well to the classroom or for older kids.
