What if Darcy resolved to walk after Elizabeth until she could be found? Would he be able to explain himself adequately, despite his lack of conversational skills? This short story begins the morning after the Hunsford proposal. (One Shot)
This is a short P&P what if that joins the story after Mr. Darcy has given Miss Bennet his letter and called at the parsonage. Instead of returning immediately to Rosings he wanders in the woods and again encounters Elizabeth.
Here they speak in a clever way where they each pretend they are relating their feelings to their favorite sister. Allowing their misunderstandings and recriminations to fall away lizzy agrees to allow Darcy to call upon her at Gracechurch street.
“One that would have the fruit must climb the tree.” Thomas Fuller
1st read: 6-28-17: Now this little story was just cute. It can be read in a few minutes and is a window of time in Kent where Darcy interacts with Elizabeth after he had given her his letter. Shortly after taking his leave of the parsonage, he goes looking for her. They have the cutest way of communicating and it is so sweet. I'll never think of role-playing again without thinking of this scene.
2nd read: 1-1-18: Revised: I fell in love all over again with this short and the language between our two main characters. What a delightful way to spend New Year’s reading about our dear couple [ODC] as they worked through the grief over Darcy’s letter and the way that they had treated each other. My choice of the above quote will not make sense until you read the ending. Yeah, that was cute.
3rd read: 3-30-19: Still cute. Sigh! I’m changing it to 4-stars.
Called a one shot...thus very short, lovely variation on the day after the disastrous Hunford proposal. Darcy, instead of taking his leave when Elizabeth is not at the parsonage, goes out looking for her and finds her reading his letter. They walk, both apologize and do a bit of role playing to determine what each might say of their present opinions about past actions. Elizabeth agrees that he might call on her at Gracechurch street and quickly between that week there and then his initial visit at Longbourn we have a HEA.
This may be short, but it's so, so lovely. It's also well written, both in terms of writing style and composition.
The imagination comes into play where Darcy and Elizabeth, speaking together on Rosings grounds after she has read this letter, feel very awkward about how to proceed. She expresses her confusion and her wish that she had Jane to talk things over with. Darcy responds by encouraging Elizabeth to close her eyes and pretend she's speaking to Jane instead of to him. In return, she tells him to pretend he's speaking to his sister Georgiana.
The exchange that results is sweet and tender and leads them to a better understanding of each other. Darcy does not repeat his proposal on this occasion, but the groundwork is clearly laid. And the proposal itself, which occurs in a later scene, is perfectly romantic.
This is a very short but sweet account of what might have happened if Darcy sought out Elizabeth shortly after she read his letter.
Wondering if she now saw him in a new light and hoping for forgiveness for past sins, they speak the truth to each other while pretending to speak to Jane and Georgiana, their closest confidants.
Returning to London, then Longbourn, will they come to a new understanding of each other and leave past grievances to the side?
Recommended to those needing a quick Darcy and Lizzy 'fix'!
This is a wonderful short story variation of Pride and Prejudice where Darcy seeks out Elizabeth in the woods at Rosings instead of just waiting at the parsonage. They talk out their misconceptions by closing their eyes and imagining they are speaking to their favorite loved one. This approach allows them to speak freely and find their hearts open to each other. From there is a quick trip to their happily ever after.
I loved this book it was so much fun to see D&E in a different light. The idea that Darcy tracks Lizzy down on her morning excursion eager to see her take on his famous letter of innocence. The accusations laid at his feet and her acknowledgement of how wrong she truly was. I adored it! I found it endearing and sweet at the two closing their eyes and imagining what they would say to their confidants. Sigh. So captivating watching them open their hearts and holding nothing back. I can't say this enough but I was just so taken in by the way the author wrote this book.
I have to laugh because I just finished a book and I loved that Darcy. I thought," his image will linger in my thoughts for a while," and no sooner I said it I find this in my news feed on Goodreads. I have read fan fiction before but am becoming better acquainted it seems in these last few months. The Darcy here was so swoon worthy in spirit and actions. I love me some playful Darcy and watching the scene play out where he is climbing a tree to get to Lizzy just brought a smile from ear to ear for me. The only thing better than the Derbyshire hunk flirting in a tree was watching him propose under it. Good lord, what possessed the author to stop shortly there after. I had all these silly notions of my own of the two returning to it after a separation. I thought parts of the story would unfold and the Lydia antics would cause doubt about him holding fast to his feelings. Alas, it just ended and left me in want of more. That truly was my only complaint. I wanted more than just a Darcy appetizer. I wanted the full course. I have 4 stars but had she kept going in the direction she was headed she would have got the full monty. Enjoy!
This was a short but cute story that explored the idea that Darcy went looking for Elizabeth after he had given her the letter and he went to take his leave. They are able to have a forthcoming conversation that clears up past quarrels and misunderstandings which opens the door to a fresh start for the couple much faster than originally written.
