A galactic war. Star-crossed lovers. What could possibly go wrong?

Jas Harrington has risen from a lowly ensign to the rank of commander in the Unity Alliance, which has been at war with the Shadows for the last five years.

But her rapid promotion means little to Jas. She hasn’t seen the love of her life for the duration of the war, and she doesn’t know if he’s dead or alive.

As the battle to decide the fate of the galaxy draws near, Jas readies her starship, the Thylacine, to play its part in defeating the enemy.

The fate of humanity and galactic civilization hangs in the balance, and she hopes that if the allies win, the life she’ll lead afterward is worth fighting for.

Shadow War is Book Ten and the final book in the fast-paced, action-packed Shadows of the Void space opera serial.

J.J. Green is a British-Australian science fiction author with a lifelong love of distant landscapes, intriguing cultures and fascinating places. She was born within the sound of the bells of Mary-le-Bow church in Cheapside, London, making her a bona fide Cockney, and she lived in Australia, Laos and Taiwan before returning to the UK to settle down in Cambridge.

Green’s novels weave science-based speculation with richly personal stories. Her works explore themes of environmental degradation, political conflict, mythical resonance, human resilience, and the ethics of technology and expansion. Her characters—often strong women—navigate future worlds grounded in both scientific plausibility and mythic imagination.

‘Shadows of the Void’ ends here! If you’ve already read books 1-9 (and maybe the prequel, too) then you’re in the right place to get hold of the final instalment.
‘Shadow War’ is the novel-length conclusion to this unique space opera and, as such, is a little meatier than previous episodes. There are a lot of ends to tie up as well as the much anticipated final showdown.

That’s right – it’s time for the universe to end the war with the Shadows one way or the other. Inevitably, you’ll find a good deal of military strategy and plenty of action-packed battle scenes to propel you onwards. Be prepared to meet new ships, new weapons, new locations, and new alien species. Unlike most of the earlier books, this one is set across a stage of almost incomprehensible size and promotes a real understanding of the scale of the Shadow invasion.

Of course, ‘Shadow War’ wouldn’t be true to its predecessors without a bit more than just some flashy action scenes. Even at this late stage, there’s still time to discover another, slightly disgusting, group of aliens who are presented with just as much attention to detail as those from Book 1. And you can’t avoid the emotional web that has been spun throughout the series and must now tighten around the characters who have become so familiar. Expect the reappearance of old faces (and not always the ones you might have guessed).

You’ll have to read the book yourself to decide quite how you feel about the ending. What I will say is that the twists continue. I had been anticipating a somewhat predictable conclusion but instead found myself devouring the final pages with as much excitement as the first.

One thing that has been done exceptionally well throughout the series is character development. As the conclusion draws near, there’s still more to be learned about even the most familiar faces. They continue to reveal strengths and weaknesses that pull them out of the 2-dimensional and give them truly realistic personalities. If you’re the type of reader who gets sucked into the emotions of the individual characters, then ‘Shadow War’ will be a real rollercoaster.

I’m sad to say goodbye to this series as it’s certainly been an enjoyable one. However, it’s ended so well (in a literary sense) that I’m satisfied rather than grieving over unanswered questions.

The ‘Shadows of the Void’ series is a great blend of action, technology, aliens, sinister plots, and space travel all woven together with plenty of relatable emotion. You’re unlikely to pick up ‘Shadow War’ without having first enjoyed the earlier books in the series. However, for those who have followed the adventure this far, and revelled in the variety of sub-genres it provides, the ending certainly won’t disappoint.

Author J.J. Green brings us Jas Harrington's last adventure with the Shadow War. As the book opens we find out that it's been five years since Jas was assigned as a security guard aboard a Unity vessel that was taking part in one of the first major engagements of the war. In the five years that she has been with the Unity Command she has been promoted to Commander of her own starship and was the first to fight the Shadows and their new ships. As the war rages on Jas learns that the Unity has plans to deal with the Shadow's flagship but as it turns out the Shadows had set at trap for the Unity fleet. As soon as the tide of battle turns Jas's ship in the one that Unity wants to deliver the final blow to the Shadow fleet. This is a great book and longer than the rest of the series but it is a fitting end too. I highly recommend this book to all science fiction fans.

Finally the last book of the series, and what a fantastic series it has been. From the first realization that aliens were kidnapping and returning clones of the people taken. Then those clones, known as Shadows, would lead unsuspecting people back to the trap and the process would start again.
In this last book we meet again some of the heroes of that first book. Life has moved on five years, years which they have all struggled against the Shadows. Will the combined beings of the intergalactic community be able to finally rid themselves of this scourge? ?
It's a great story, well worth the time to follow through each book, to get the total impact of this futuristic saga.

I received a copy of this book from the author.

Time has moved on five years and Jas Harrington now has command of her own fighter ship.

She has not seen any of her friends since Ganymede and worries that they, especially Carl, might be dead.

In a war that is particularly vicious, the Shadows seem to have the upper hand. They have weapons technology and starships that are far more advanced than any in the Galactic Alliance.

In order to defeat the Shadows chances must be taken but will they succeed?

This book concludes the wonderful series Shadows of the Void, a Space Opera.

If you haven’t read it then do yourself a favour and start at the beginning. It’s well worth a read. I’d give the whole series 6 stars if that were possible.

Hmm ..... a fitting if somewhat telegraphed ending to this series. Five years on and Jas has made Commander, still battling the Shadows of course but with the return and assistance of some old friends - including Carl, however briefly.

Their encounters with the Shadow Mother Ship can go one of two ways and mercifully it is the second that prevails - although without some intervention from the "good guys" I doubt we would have witnessed the ultimate happy reunion. Bottom line? All wrapped up in a neat package.

Moving on.....

Having risen to the rank of Commander in the Unity Alliance, Jas Harrington has reached the pinnacle of her career.
Five long years have passed in which the Shadows have been driven away from worlds previously held in their sway. And the next clash is rightfully expected to be the last fight and the Shadows finally defeated for all time.
Or will it?
The Shadow War is the tenth book in this series and the final conclusion.
Enjoy

It's 5 years later and the final battle against the Shadows has arrived.
As a finale this is fantastic, loose ends are tied up and we find out what happened to many of the original characters, for good or bad. It is emotional, heavy reading at times. A fitting ending for this exhilarating sci-fi series.

A most wonderful series. I would have to say a lot, but others have done it.
So, what i like to say is: I was first sad, very sad, as the story came to an end. But then, oh may, yes, then.
I was so happy for the great and wondrous real ending. I have to confess, since i am a emotional person,
I cried. Yes, really.
I loved the whole story, from the first book to the last.

Yes, it's the end of the series and so the Shadow War reaches a peak.

Jas has basically been on her own - the gang had split to various roles on different ships or Earth. She has been promoted to Commander, in control of a new spaceship.

The Shadows are getting more aggressive but the Alliance has learnt more about their abilities.

The Epilogue was a good way to end.

Great Ending to Series

I'm sad that this series is over, but it's a great series. Jas, Carl, Sayen and even the Shadows made this a wonderful reading experience.
I Highly Recommend the whole Series.

Super not sure why the heck Carl was treated like he was. Why just drop Sayen (sp bc I had audio book)?

I'm just glad it's over. Which is what I get for being a completist.
