Fun, exciting, entertaining, and grabbing. I loved having a family and heroine from the Indian subcontinent, even if all of them are 1st or 2nd generation American. The recipes in the back were nice too. And I loved the cliffhanger -- I'm not gonna be a spoiler, but I will say that it has me definitely wanting more.
A Roller Coaster ride page turner you just can't put down until the end!
This is the second book in this series and is definitely does not disappoint! You are taking on a roller coaster ride and just when you think you know what is going on, you end up in a dead end! Lots of twists and turns and red-herrings to throw you off course. And of course you are treated to some very nice recipes that make you mouth water. Jordan and his fiance, Jessica have a nice dinner in Sylvie's cafe as they had many times in the past. A new cafe seems to be opening across the street which Sylvie is just a little worried about, but like Jordan and Jessica she has her regulars. When Jordan mysteriously dies in the park with a pie wrapper in his pocket from Sylvie's Cafe, it is first determined that it was a natural death. But Meera thinks there may be more to it and then things start on a downward spiral for Sylvie and her husband. Did Sylvie's pie somehow be the cause of Jordan's death. Everyone loved Jordan so who could possibly want him dead. Could it be the new Cafe wanted to get rid of their competition? Could it be his fiance, his brother, his sister. With so many strange secrets, Meera has to find out who killed Jordan before her friends, Sylvie and John go out of business. Throw in the detective on the case who arrests John? Curious, why? Meera, her best friends and her grandma, Motee Ba must find out what really happened to Jordan! And then you have Meera's stalker. Who is following Meera and why? This book is a page turner from the very beginning that you just can't put down. I just had to read it in one sitting! I received and ARC from the author, but the opinions expressed here are definitely my own and I can't wait for the next book in this series!
This is a light, easy, mystery that you can read in an evening. I have lately read several cozy mystery books and some that revolved around a cafe but there is a big difference in this one from the others I read. Those had the amateur sleuth avoiding giving information to the police unless absolutely necessary and making stupid, dangerous choices. In contrast, Meera works together with the police and they help each other with information. In essence, even though they aren't working together, they solve the crime together. I haven't read the first book but it sounds like maybe that didn't happen since Meera was the prime suspect before. But I liked that they worked together in this one. Not only does Meera work with the police, she recruits her best buddies to help giving the book a Nancy Drew feel. She doesn't bumble into the investigation but is purposeful about investigating. And the clues are all laid out for the reader to see as well as Meera. The book has a number of suspects that might well be the culprit so it takes a while to guess correctly who the murderer is. And I actually went for the least obvious character thinking all the rest were just red herrings and I was wrong! The one thing that bored me during the book was all the food. Enough already. These people eat constantly! And they describe every meal and snack. I got to the point that I skimmed the food parts. Be prepared to jump from place to place or time to later time from one paragraph to the next. It seemed to happen a lot. No indicator between paragraphs that things are going to move to the next thing.
No sex, a little language, and no violence outside of a previously murdered man.
Meera's friends, Sylvie and Jon are the prime suspects in this murder mystery because the victim died after he and his fiance had dined at their cafe. But Meera having worked part time at their kitchens to help the couple out, knew that there was no way that the food from their kitchen could have been tainted in any way. But there were not a lot of other suspects in the offing so she was determined to prove their innocence.
I enjoyed this second book in the series a lot better, even though the ending was a little predictable. The story itself was strung together better and it all worked out to be more coherent and therefore more enjoyable. This book made me want to read the next one and to get to know the characters better; the first book did not do this for me. I do enjoy the characters in the book, they are fun and I like the Indian touch. The author includes customs and explains them, which is great, and of course the recipes a bonus. Perhaps less emphasis on the constant focus on the eating - we are aware that food in this culture (like many eastern cultures) is important, but the author has toned down the meals slightly and I think that is an improvement.
I received a free copy of this book but this review is my honest opinion
Meera Patel is back solving another murder mystery. At least this time she is not the prime suspect, but close family friends and local cafe owner's Sylvie and Jon are! Their pie was found in the victim's pocket and now no one wants to eat at the cafe. Instead they are going across to the new cafe run by a new to town mother and daughter duo. To help save her friends' business and lives Meera again puts her life in danger, much to the chagrin of her grandfather and father, to try and solve the mystery. Suspects are a plenty this time around, but will if Meera doesn't help the police to find the right one Jon will soon be behind bars.
Another wonderful cozy mystery from Ms. Clover. Meera is a wonderful character and her family and friends are great supporting characters. I especially enjoy Meera's relationship with her grandmother. The food all sounded delicious between Sylvie's pies, cafe food, and Indian specialities - I don't know if I could pick just one! The intrigue kept me guessing and the food kept me hungry! Rated 4 out of 5 stars!
What a different type of mystery! I really had no clue whodunit or why or how they could ever prove anything. Be forewarned: you’ll stay hungry as you read since EVERYTHING revolves around eating! Very satisfying and worthwhile, especially if you keep snacks nearby.....
I've eaten a few pies in my life that were to die for but never saw one that was a murder weapon. Follow Neera while she tries to discover who killed a patron of her friend's diner. Neera and a few friends work out each detail until they have an idea of the culprit. Read to find out who did the deed.
Swan Creek is a small town where everyone knows everyone else and their business until someone is murdered and no one knows anything. Meera and her friends set out to prove their friends innocent by finding out who really did it. An entertaining read by Leena Clover!
This second in the series finds Meera again solving a murder. At least this time she's not the main suspect, although her close friends are. There are more good plot twists, and more recipes and description of yummy meals. There are still some troubling misuses of words of words though.
I loved this book. It has all the things a good mystery needs to keep your interest. While the ending was a surprise to me, it made the most sense. I can't wait to read the next book.
So who really killed Jordon and how did they do it? As the suspects start to line up, Meera and her friends work on solving the mystery and saving their friend's Sylvie and Jon's diner. Wait for the double whammy and the recipes at the end.
Dude ranch and pecan pie; can’t get much more Southern than that. Meera Patel and friends find themselves defending the innocence of a family friend. The story had many characters and possibly guilty parties but I will say I predicted the guilty party fairly early. The story was fun and tel he banter amongst family and friends is quite enjoyable to read. The foods described in the story all sound fabulous
The pie isn't exactly as they made it, is it??? She waited and watched, didn't she??? I have a legume allergy and have to be extra careful what I eat!!! I enjoyed this story and recommended the book.
I liked it. It's probably not the best mystery I've ever read, but I really enjoyed it and would like to read more in this series. I give the author 5 Stars.
DNF at 34%. I really wanted to like this, but nothing was really happening at 1/3 of the story. Some descriptions didn't make sense. At one point, Meera & her friends decide to call her grandmother & she's handed a phone. The next sentence describes them cleaning up (from what? It's never explained.), & then going to dinner. This would've been around 4 o' clock, when dinner was served at 6. Plus, they never called Motee Ba! Another description has the friends getting into a hot tub. Meera hopes he's not the cranky guy she'd met at reception. Huh? Leena Clover forgot to set it up that a man was already in the hot tub.
It also wasn't clear where Meera works. I thought she worked at Sylvie's Diner, but she describes going to work & then going to Sylvie's. She mentions shelving books, & she meets her friends at what I think is the campus cafe, but it's never clear. So, I think she mainly worked at the local college's campus library. Again, that was never made clear.
Meera is another character who doesn't so much snoop & investigate as accidentally stumble upon the truth, which is what she tells another character. I'd just prefer mysteries that involve some sort of actual investigating, whether official or amateur.
I did like that the lead character had Indian heritage & celebrated her culture. The rest I was just not feeling it.
