The fourth book in the 'Buttons' series, 'Buttons and Shame' takes the series in a new direction. This book is the story of Cane and Adelina. Like earlier books in the series, this one is full of danger and has a dark undertone.

Now that everything between Pearl and Crow has finally settled down, Cane's story begins to unfold. It seems, that like his brother, Cane has a weakness for darker sexual pursuits. His newfound friendship with Pearl has deeply changed him. It has made him a more sympathetic man, causing him a great deal of inner turmoil, as he battles against his darker urges.

Crow stepping down from his position in the family's criminal business has left Cane at the helm. Underworld dealings had never bothered him. He'd never thought twice about taking his pleasure from a sex slave -- until now.

When Cane sets his eyes on Adelina at the airport, he was intrigued. His interest was only piqued more when she brushed off his advances. He wanted the beautiful woman, but had no idea that he would ever see her again.

Then, fate has his path crossing with Adelina's once again. Meeting with one of his clients, he discovers that Adelina is his unwilling captive. His client, Tristan, offers up Adelina for the night and he has reservations, despite the fact that he's never had any qualms about using an unwilling slave before.

There is something about Adelina that calls to him on a deeper level. His budding relationship with Pearl weighs heavily on his mind. He knows what she would say and he can no longer maintain emotional distance from the situation.

When Tristan cannot pay for the shipment in full, as agreed, he offers another kind of deal. Tristan agrees to loan Adelina to Cane until he can pay him. He has no intention of giving her up entirely though -- a point which he makes exceedingly clear to Cane.

Of course, Cane's conflicted feelings continue to plague him. He plans to use Adelina for his sexual gratification. However, guilt eats at him.

The longer the two are together, the more difficulty Cane has remaining emotionally distant from Adelina. No surprise there. This is intensified by Pearl's interference and advocacy for the slave.

All things considered, I thought that this was a good start to Cane's story. However, it just didn't have the same draw for me as Crow and Pearl's story did. Maybe they're just too similar and I needed more time between books. Regardless, the next audiobook hasn't been released yet and I'm glad to take a break from the series. Sometimes, reading a long series back to back starts to feel monotonous. That has been the case for me with this series.

I'm sure that I'll continue the series at a later date, but I'm glad for the reprieve. I only hope that the author doesn't follow the exact same storyline for Cane's story that was used for Crow's story. So far, it feels eerily familiar. I enjoyed it, but I didn't love it.

2.75-3ish stars

Genre: Romance
Setting: Italy
POVs: Multiple, 1st person

This book opened with spoilers from Buttons and Pain so it's best to read this series in order:

Book one: Buttons and Lace
Book two: Buttons & Hate
Book three: Buttons and Pain
Book four: Buttons and Shame

While I really wanted to love this story, it just didn't hit the spot. I didn't connect with Cane Barsetti or his subject of obsession, Adelina. Cane's POV read like a horny teenage boy and the erotic scenes turned me off most of the time and was more hilarious/ ridiculous than romantic. How so?

Issues?
The lack of depth. It's the noticeable element running on low throughout this entire series, but it was most noticeable in this story and made this book feel more like a watered down captive story. I rolled my eyes a lot for first 50% of the story. To me, Cane lacked substance all around and his female lead was two-dimensional at best. That final dispute between Button and Crow firmly held my interest, though.

The upside?
Crow and Button's relationship continued to bloom and they made multiple appearances throughout the text. However, their relationship was not without conflict and it'll be interesting to see how they progress in the upcoming books. This story ended (surprisingly) at the 76% mark and the first eight chapters of The Scotch King made up the rest of this book.

► I've enjoyed this author's other books and this story certainly had nice undertones of dark humor and witty sarcasm running throughout, but this one just wasn't for me. This book would be great for a reader who prefers a douchey male lead character and an antagonistic female lead character.

Cane and Adeline from Cane’s POV!

I am still enjoying this series. This book is the first one that is Cane and Adeline’s story, though Crow and Pearl are still featured. I love that this is from Cane’s POV. I wish more books would be from the Hero’s POV. I just love to know what they are thinking.

In this case, Adeline is a slave belonging to Tristan, one of Cane’s clients and she is lent to Cane by Tristan in lieu of payment. Though she doesn’t belong to him and he is supposed to return her after a certain amount of time. Cane is obligated to return her to Tristan when Tristan pays what he owes.

Adeline’s story is very similar to Pearl’s and so Pearl wants to help, while Cane empathizes with Adeline’s situation, he doesn’t want to get involved and mess with his business deals. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next one.

You will not be disappointed in this series, this story is Cane & Adelina story. Cane is the younger brother of Crow who are both into business as Arms Dealers. Tristian is now one of their biggest clients who have come short on cash for a shipment he needs immediately. The deal he makes with Cane is half now and half in 31 days. When Cane refuses Tristian sweeten the pot by adding a slave as collateral from 31 days while his investments comes in. Cane remember the slave he saw in the airport and the one Tristian let sampled and decided that was the one he wanted. Agreement is made.

Cane tries to avoid Crow because he knows Crow would be pissed for not receiving all their money plus how could Cane face his sister-in-law Pearl cause Cane just agreed to be with a slave for 31 days. But how could Cane turn down a moment he wanted to be with Tristian slave. Cane don't even know her name. His desire for her is that strong. What Canes finds out is with Adelina he is more gentler he is different, he giving her time to adjust to her new situation, however he is not willing to wait forever. Canes gives Adelina an ultimatum obey and be with him or he will give her back to Tristian before the 31 days are up.

What will Cane do when his sister finds out about Adelina? What will Pearl do once she discover the truth? Will Cane sacrifice his and Crow's business dealing and the Barsetti name for a slave?

It was fun reading the story from Canes perspective. Although it was so similar to the story of Pearl and Crow. One thing what annoyed me in this book, was the memory of Cane almost killing Pearl. They talk about it too often, like 20 times, or even more, throughout the whole book. It's just too much. We know what happened right? That's why we read this book, we want to know what happens further.

And who calls their girlfriend / wife Buttons? I would'nt want to be called that hahaha😂

But I did enjoy the story and I'm curious how it will continue.

Buttons and Shame (Buttons #4) by Penelope Sky

The fourth instalment in the Button Series

Buttons and Shame makes a shift from Crow and Pearl to that of Cane and Adeline. Although Pearl and Crow are not the main characters in this book they remain an integral part of the story as we get to see them from Cane’s perspective as well as get their POV.

Cane is Crows younger brother, and yes he’s the one who bashed Pearl half to death. Although he was somewhat given redemption, he will never forgive himself for hurting Pearl especially now that he sees her as a friend and like a sister.

Cane has taken over the Barsetti family arms dealing business. One his clients Tristian (he is a bad guy) has failed to make good on his payment promise. To keep the peace, Tristian offers Cane the loan of his slave for 31 days until he can come up with the remainder of the cash.

Cane is conflicted by the offer because of his friendship with Pearl and knowing what her past was, but when he sees Tristan’s slave Adeline, he can’t help but accept the deal.

Adeline is feisty and hostile but she ignites something inside of Cane that he had long given up on. Will Cane be able to give her back when the 31 days are up?

description

The new direction of the series gives us a front row seat inside Canes mind, we see what motivates him, what demons he battles and most importantly we get to see the softer more redeemable side to him.

Adeline is new in the series, she’s young, innocent and smart. Her captures have used her friend as leverage, threatening to kill her if she does not comply with their demands. Adeline is brave but will she be strong enough to fight the man who now holds her life in his hands?

Cane and Adeline have an electric chemistry between them, share a primal passion that cannot be extinguished and as the day’s grow shorter their feelings grow stronger leaving them with dangerous problem.

MY THOUGHTS:
There is a noticeable similarity between Cane and Adeline’s story to that of Crow and Pearl. I found Cane harder to connect with than Crow. He’s rough and ragged but his immaturity at times was a massive turn off. The sex scenes were a tad juvenile and the darkness level certainly has been turned down more than a few notches.

Adeline was adverse and hard to come on board with easily. I only hope that the next instalment provides more character depth and growth to keep my interest, I loved the Pearl and Crow parts of the story which kept me invested in the story.

BLUSH RATING: 2
ROMANCE RATING: 2
PLOT RATING: 4
DARKNESS RATING: 3
OVERALL: 3 1/2 Stars

GENRE: Dark Romance
NARRATION: Multiple POV
BOOK DETAILS: Book #4 of The Buttons Series.

DO I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK?
If you enjoyed the first three books and your invested, then I would recommend reading on although you must be able to separate the stories to successfully connect with Cane and Adeline characters. This is not as dark and emotional as the first three instalments in the series but there is potential for those to rise in the next bookButtons and Blame

Narrated by: Michael Ferraiuolo, Samantha Cook
Length: 8 hrs and 1 min

Michael Ferraiuolo is one of those narrators that you either love him or hate him. Me, I love him. I love the slow drawn out tone he has. His portrayal of Lars was brilliant. He was able give a slight distinctness between Cane and Crow’s voice and his female narration works well because he doesn’t have a naturally deep base in his pitch.

Samantha Cook is good fit for Pearl but she sounded too old for Adeline. The narration itself was good, clear and expressive just not a good fit for Adeline’s character.
I preferred the written edition of this book rather than the audio.

You have no idea how excited I was when I heard that Cane Barsetti was getting his own story. For those who haven't read the Buttons series ( Buttons & Lace, Buttons & Hate and Buttons & Pain) Cane is Crow's little brother. With this book, we get to see that there is so much more to him than the bastard we saw in the previous books.

"You aren't like them."
She couldn't be more wrong. "You don't know me, sweetheart. And you don't want to get to know me."

Through this captivating story, we get to see Cane's evolution from uncaring and insensitive to protective, caring and a liiiiittle possessive (he's a Barsetti after all). I loved his brotherly relationship with Pearl and how he seems to have learned from his past mistakes.
Adelina is such a brave, strong and loyal character. She was in the wrong place at the wrong time, got captured with her friend, and is now Tristan's (Cane and Crow's biggest client) slave. Tristan (uhhh, just writing his name down makes me want to push that bastard in the throat.) being short on cash, offers Cane to loan him Adelina for a month. Cane, being strongly attracted to her, agrees.

"I'm right here." My hand moved into her hair, and I kissed her temple. "It's alright." My lips moved to her cheek then her neck. "It's just you and me inside these four walls."

The chemistry between Cane and Adelina was insane . I loved how much he cared for her and the attraction they both had for one another. I loved how Cane wanted her to be comfortable, even in those circumstances... My god, there were times where she literally broke my heart.
I also loved, loved, LOVED how much of Crow and Pearl we get to see. I missed them soooo much, and their last scene was so fucking intense! Fuck me, it literally made me want to cry and beg and beg and beg Penelope Sky for MORE.

"You pushed me too far this time. Too fucking far"
I fought the tears that burned in the back of my eyes.

Buttons & Shame was soooo addictive , I couldn't put it down. I actually don't think I've ever read a book that fast. The book (obviously) ends on a cliffhanger and I can already tell you that the wait until Buttons and Blame is going to be fucking t.o.r.t.u.r.e.... But I am so, oh so looking forward to it.
If you like dark reads than this book, AND this series are definitely for you. I highly RECOMMEND.

Cane's story was what I hoped it would be. He's rough around the edges but his personal strengths shine through. Adelina has a quiet strength that makes for a good heroine. Additionally Crow's and Pearl's POV accents the story.

My biggest complaint is cost of the novel. The story is a novella with a full length novel price. Hopefully the author/publisher will take into consideration the length of the novel should reflect in the cost.

I'm very impressed with Cane's story. He's just as stubborn as his bother, Crow.

This story is about Cane and Adeline. Adeline is loaned to Cane from Tristian. He's another arms dealer that bought Adeline. He could not pay Cane and Crow the full price upfront so he had to loan out Adeline for 31 days until he came up with the rest of it.

We also hear from Crow and Button.

I'd have to say that what Button did at the end of the book was pure foolishness. Crow said "you think you're invincible?" and I realized that Button really does think she is because she got out of her situation and killed several people in the process. No, I don't agree with, and never will, physical abuse. Trust me, I understand Crow's anger but I'd never allow anyone to slap me around.

I have to wait until Nov. for the next installment. WHY?! 😩😩😩

Happy reading, friends! ❤️📖

*Audiobook*

I'm a little disappointed in this story. Stop. The narrators are FABULOUS and the sole reason I completed the story. The actual story is a bit lame compared to previous installments.

I will admit the ending is the final 5% is magnificent and Crow's response is EXACTLY what I needed to experience before committing to the next installment. I absolutely LOVE it when his alpha personality is on steroids!!!!

Ben ritrovate amiche, passate buone vacanze?

This is the start of Cane and Adelina's story. Cain sees Adelina in the airport, comes over to talk to her, she won't talk to him, and he gives up. Two days later he is making a deal with Tristan, a "good customer", and recognizes her from the airport. She is now Tristan's slave.

Tristan offers Adelina to Cane as a "kind" gesture while he is there making the deal. At first Cane says no, but then feels obligated to take him up on his offer. After Cane has some fun with Adelina, Tristan tells him he doesn't have the full amount of money to make the deal, so he offers one of his other slaves as payment. Cane says no, but he would be willing to take Adelina as payment. Tristan had to "think" about it for a day because Adelina was his favorite (after 2 days of having her as his slave). The next day a deal was made for half the money now and Adelina being Cane's slave on loan for 31 days. Once the other half of the payment was made Cane was to bring Adelina back.

So this was a good start to their story. It felt a little too familiar to Crow and Button's story, but hey, we are still in this button fantasy world, so I said let's go. And I really liked having Crow and Button still being a pretty major part of the story, moving their relationship forward a bit as well. But then we hit a wall.

Cain takes Adelina but won't force himself on her. Ok, I get that he has changed since becoming friends and a brother to Pearl. He buys her clothes, let's her go out by herself, gives her freedom around the house, let's her work at the vineyard with Pearl, takes her on trips....all good. Except they have 31 days, and where I am finding the biggest issue is that with all that has happened they still have a "few weeks" until he has to take her back by the end of the book. The timeline doesn't work.

I really loved the start of the series with Buttons and Lace, but have found as the books move forward that they have really started to become too predictable and actually a bit boring because of the lack of plot. There is more and more sex, and less and less action, passion and emotion. The hard, kick ass characters are becoming too tame for this type of story. I hope that both the action and the timeline take a better turn in the next book. I do like these characters, but am frustrated with the timeline and copious amounts of sex scenes. I like the "less is more" theory when reading romance books, even the darkest ones. You can actually have as much or more action as sex and it makes the book more interesting. Making the reader wait, want and anticipate those scenes rather than skimming, as I find myself doing now, gives it a depth that keeps me wanting to read more.

So for now I am giving 3 stars. I wish it was worth more.
